Addio Serie A: Joevin fails to seduce Udinese

DIRECTV W Connection and Trinidad and Tobago starlet Joevin Jones will have to wait a bit longer for the chance to ply his trade abroad; and it will probably not be in the Serie A.

Wired868 understands that Jones failed to impress during a trial with Italy top flight club, Udinese, and was sent home early. The talented 22-year-old utility player is expected to land in Piarco tomorrow night.

Jones’ trial was supposed to run for 12 days. Instead, it was cut short in under a week after the “Soca Warrior” played in a reserve team match for Udinese on Thursday.

A source, who kept in touch with Jones during his stint abroad, told Wired868 that Udinese felt the player did not yet have the dynamism expected for a club of that level.

Trinidad and Tobago players have walked straight out of the Pro League and into top flight teams in Scotland, Kazakhstan, Belgium and Hungary. But the gap between Connection and a respected Serie A club that once had the likes of Brazilian legend Zico and, more recently, Chilean star Alexis Sanchez on its books was apparently too wide to cross in barely a week’s time.

Twelve years ago, another Serie A team, Perugia, signed Connection midfielder Silvio Spann but Spann never played in the top flight and spent much of his time on loan in Serie C.

Jones’ return adds to a miserable spell for Connection in the transfer market as teammates Daneil Cyrus, Jamal Clarence and Jerrel Britto all left Vietnam last week without securing deals after trials with Hanoi T&T and Song Lam Nghe.

It is unlikely any of that quartet will feature in Connection’s upcoming TTFA FA Trophy final from 7.30 pm on Wednesday December 18 against Central FC at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva.

Connection won the FA Trophy three times before but its last success was over a decade ago in 2002 and the “Savonetta Boys” lost in three FA Trophy finals since then against North East Stars (2003), Caledonia AIA (2008) and Joe Public (2009) respectively.

Still, Connection starts as favourites against a Central outfit that is in its second successive FA Trophy final but enduring a modest run of form. Caledonia defeated Central 2-0 in the 2012/13 edition of Trinidad and Tobago’s oldest knock-out tournament.

Connection owner David John Williams could not be reached for comment on Jones’ imminent return and what the club’s recent transfer setbacks might mean for its business in the upcoming transfer window.

Connection is certain to add at least one fresh face to its ranks when the local transfer window swings open on December 23. Twenty-one year old attacker Shahdon Winchester has already returned from a loan stint with Finland Premier League team, FF Jaro, and spent the last month training with the Couva-based outfit.

Connection has already agreed to send Winchester back to Jaro for another loan stint early next season.

Duckie Mulls Missed Chances Against Waterhouse

Montego Bay United´s head coach, Donovan Duckie, was disappointed with the result 0-0 result at home - Wespow Park - against Waterhouse FC, in yesterday´s round of matches in the Red Stripe Premier League.

It was their second successive draw at home, following last week´s 1-1 result against August Town, which only fuelled more frustration for Duckie, although they sit second on 22 points after yesterday´s game.

"We have been creating numerous chances but have not been clinical in the final third, so I guess that is an aspect of our game we need to look at," reasoned Duckie.

"I think this is our bad patch, in terms of not scoring goals, so we need to give thanks we are not conceding also," he added.

Waterhouse, who came into the match a rung below MBU in third, moved up to 18 points and also feel they were unlucky not to have snatched the win from inside the first half, when Jermaine ´Tuffy´ Anderson´s downward header was brilliantly held by MBU goalkeeper Jacomena Barrett.

What the game lacked in front of goal, it certainly made up for in intensity, as both teams had players cautioned, with Anderson lucky to have completed the full 90 minutes, as referee Valdin Legister could have easily cautioned him a second time in the match.

Dino Williams should have done better for MBU in the 12th minute, on the back of some brilliant work on the flank by the pacy Alan Ottey - who served up a wonderful cross. But Williams failed to bring the ball totally under control and sent his shot high over the crossbar.

TREMENDOUS CROSS

Ottey was on song once more, this time from the opposite flank, and whipped in a tremendous cross that found its way through three defenders inside the 18-yard box to forward Leslie St Fleur, whose mistimed shot zipped wide of the target.

Then it was time for Waterhouse to mount one of their attacks, which ended with another blistering attempt from Anderson, which may have gotten a touch from Barrett as it crashed against the upright in the 36th minute.

It was clear that it was going to be just as stirring in the second half, and so it proved, with Anderson becoming combatant, and the MBU players resisting all the visitors managed to throw at them.

But the best chance in the opening stages of the second half fell to Ottey, who raced in for a shot but was immediately closed down by a defender, and his shot sailed wide of the near post. Then Barrett was again called into action and produced three stunning saves at point-blank range to deny first up Anderson, and then the follow-up, which he did well to block, and a third, before the danger was cleared, as his defenders finally booted the ball upfield.

"It´s good to start the round not losing, and a point on the road is always a welcome one," said Junior Francis, Waterhouse´s coach.

"It was a very competitive game, and I thought both clubs played well. And although we got chances and we didn´t put them away, it´s just a part of the game. But I am satisfied, especially travelling so far," added Francis.

Portmore record 2-1 at Sporting Central

TOLL GATE, Clarendon — Portmore United defeated Sporting Central Academy 2-1 yesterday at Juici Patties Park to record only their second victory of the Red Stripe Premier League season.

The St Catherine side were by far the better side on the outset and duly went ahead when Ashton Bennett ghosted in at the back post to tap in Stephen Williams´ shot-comecross on 35 minutes.

But just two minutes later, Sporting were on level terms again, with Francois Swaby beating goalkeeper Kemar Foster to a Cory Hylton cross with a firm header.

The visitors, however, continued to dominate proceedings and were rewarded with the winner 19 minutes from team when defender Rosario Harriott got by a few Sporting Central defenders to blast in a deflected effort.

Despite the win, Portmore remain at the bottom of the 12- team league on 10 points, but coach Calvin Lewis was pleased with the victory. Prior to this game, the former five-time champions had suffered six defeats, while recording four draws in their 11 first-round encounters.

“This will definitely help to boost the players´ confidence,” Lewis said. “I think we really dominated the game today and it was only a slight goalkeeping error that caused us to concede.

We will now try to win our next two games to close out the year with nine points.” Meanwhile, Sporting Central, who were losing for the first time in five games, remain in the lower half of the league table on 14 points — three above the relegation zone.

Their coach, Linval ´Pala´ Wilson says they will “regroup” in an effort to end the calendar year on a high. “It was just an off day for us,” Wilson told the Jamaica Observer in his post-game interview. We just never played to form. That second goal, the deflection, really killed us. We will just have to come again on Thursday against Humble Lion.”

Campbell Breaks Drought In Big Tivoli Win

Tivoli Gardens Football Club, led by a brace from Shavar Campbell, slammed August Town 5-1 in the Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) second-round football game at University of the West Indies (UWI) Bowl, Mona, yesterday.

Campbell, who transferred to Tivoli from Savannah during the summer, scored for the first time this season in the 16th minute and added the second in the 44th. Other scorers for Tivoli were André Morgan (57th), Rohan Reid (71st) and Jamoy Sibblies (86th).

August Town´s substitute Larone Russell scored the consolation for his team in the 90+ minute.

Jeffrey Grant of August Town picked up his second yellow card in the 72nd minute and was sent off the field.

The diminutive Campbell had played in all 11 first-round games for his new club, but finally broke the drought when he received a good pass and beat August Town goalkeeper Kevin Graham with a neat finish. He then doubled his tally with another good finish on the stroke of half-time.

GOOD CHANCES

August Town created some good chances, but were let down by faulty finishing from Richard Orrett and Jerome Wedderburn.

Tivoli scored three more times in the second half and ran out easy winners to move to 18 points and third behind leaders Harbour View and second place Montego Bay United.

"It is a great feeling to finally score for Tivoli Gardens. Although I wasn´t scoring, the coaching staff kept faith in me and my team-mates always encourage me. It was just a matter of time," a delighted Campbell told The Gleaner.

Tivoli´s head coach, Glendon ´Admiral´ Bailey, lauded Campbell for his double strike and performance.

"We always knew that he would get going. We kept on telling him that he will be rewarded for his hard work," Bailey said.

"The team played well today, but lapsed in the final minute and conceded a goal. We wanted a clean sheet. The objective is to win the second round and see where it takes us," he pointed out.

Meanwhile, Bradley Stewart, who took over from Max Straw at August Town earlier this month, was very disappointed with the result.

"This is disgraceful in my second game in charge. In the first one we drew with then leaders Montego Bay United away. Now we lost badly today," Stewart said.

The RSPL continues tonight with Cavalier tackling Humble Lion at Stadium East, starting at 7 p.m.

Newell´s: buscan detectar a agresores

ROSARIO -- La justicia trataba de localizar entre las filmaciones de las cámaras de calle a los responsables de ataque a balazos contra una combi que trasladaba a hinchas de Newell´s Old Boys, en el que fueron asesinados dos hombres, en tanto una mujer y una nena resultaron con heridas, de las que se reponían en dos hospitales de Rosario.

Mientas, los pasajeros de la combi que salieron ilesos daban testimonio en sede judicial, donde la investigación quedó en manos de la fiscal Lucía Aráoz y el juez de instrucción de 15 nominación, Alejandro Negroni.

La Justicia dispuso hacer un rastreo por los videos de las distintas cámaras para determinar el itinerario que hicieron los asesinos, que se trasladaban en una moto y que a eso de las 21 en bulevar Oroño al 5000, casi esquina Lamadrid, en el barrio Las Delicias, cruzaron a la Mercedes Benz Sprinter y abrieron fuego entre 11 y 13 veces, según las fuentes policiales y judiciales consultadas por DyN.

En el ataque murió José Boladian, de 34 años, el chofer de la combi, oriundo de Grand Bourg, y Walter Palacios, de 39, de Ramos Mejía, ambos de la provincia de Buenos Aires.

Solange Palacios, de 29 años, hermana de una de las víctimas mortales, recibió un disparo en el tórax, cerca del hombro, y esta mañana fue intervenida, reponiéndose favorablemente en el Hospital Clemente Alvarez.

Un portavoz de la guardia no descartó que en las próximas horas la mujer podría ser trasladada a un centro asistencial de Buenos Aires. También resultó herida una niña de 9 años, por el roce de una bala en una mano, atendida en el hospital pediátrico Víctor Vilela.

Todos pertenecían a la peña de Newell´s de "Vieja Amelia", del Gran Buenos Aires y dejaban Rosario luego de asistir al partido que empató con Lanús 2-2 en el final del torneo Inicial.

Las autoridades judiciales quieren saber si hubo algún entredicho previo, entre los atacantes y las víctimas, tal cual unas versiones, y si los atacantes evidenciaron algún móvil, como rivalidad futbolística o de interna.

El secretario Coordinación de Seguridad en Competencias Deportivas y Espectáculos Masivos, Pablo Farías, aludió a esa versión sobre un cruce previo.

"Aparentemente hubo algún encuentro previo con esta persona, incluso algunos testimonios daban cuenta de que habrían descendido algunas personas de la trafic, pero obviamente cualquier hecho que hubiera habido no justifica una reacción demencial de este tipo como la balacera", sostuvo el funcionario por Radio La Ocho.

Farías explicó que "El dato indica esta persona estaba ubicada en una esquina, propinó algunos insultos, la gente de la trafic se detuvo, tuvieron alguna discusión, después siguió y ahí es cuando es seguida por esta persona y otra en una moto, y es interceptada, se produce la balacera llegando casi a calle Lamadrid".

Para el funcionario lo ocurrido "es muy difícil de evitar, de prever" porque, dijo, "por los datos que tenemos no se trata de algo premeditado o armado".

Respecto de si pudo ser una emboscada, Farias evaluó que "los datos que se están analizando no dan esa hipótesis de que haya hecho una emboscada preparada, sino un hecho que surgió que fue escalando en la violencia hasta llegar a este punto realmente demencial".

D´Onofrio admitió: "Francescoli va a ser nuestro primer refuerzo"

BUENOS AIRES -- El presidente electo de River Plate, Rodolfo D´Onofrio, adelantó que el primer refuerzo de su nueva gestión será el uruguayo Enzo Francescoli, a quien le ofrecerá la titularidad del proyecto de fútbol.

"Me voy a reunir con él en las próximas horas para empezar a delinear el trabajo que pretendemos. Francescoli va a ser nuestro primer refuerzo. Si pudiera jugar, sería completo", bromeó en diálogo con Télam.

Como anticipo de sus primeras medidas, el sucesor de Daniel Passarella también confirmó que "trabajará en el club (Noberto) ´Beto´ Alonso, otro de los máximos ídolos de River" y que Amadeo Carrizo ostentará el cargo de "presidente honorario".

"Las glorias tienen que estar ligadas a River. Por eso, vamos a sumar a Enzo y Alonso, dos de los máximos ídolos de los últimos tiempos", afirmó D´Onofrio.

Alonso, de 60 años, ganó la Copa Libertadores y la Intercontinental de 1986, además de festejar siete títulos locales; mientras que el uruguayo (52) se consagró campeón de América en 1996 como símbolo del recordado equipo dirigido por Ramón Díaz.

A propósito del riojano, actual entrenador, el presidente electo imaginó un primer diálogo fructífero, al considerarlo "un riverplantense de ley, que quiere al club y a la camiseta. Nosotros queremos que nos de todos los títulos que ya supo conseguir".

En referencia al contrato de Díaz, renovado por Passarella por dos años sobre el final de su mandato, D´Onofrio evitó polémicas luego de anunciar en la campaña su intención de renegociarlo. "Lo dije en su momento porque era un sentir personal, que tenían muchos socios también y Ramón lo entendió por eso puso ese contrato a disposición de quien ganase las elecciones", apuntó.

"Ramón seguramente va a poner por delante el bien de River", especuló el nuevo presidente sobre las charlas que mantengan relacionadas al vínculo con el club.

En otro pasaje de la charla, D´Onofrio se mostró "listo para gobernar" River, a pesar de "los problemas económicos" que enfrentará desde el mismo momento de la asunción. "Tenemos préstamos gestionados a tasas normales para poder pagar las deudas y empezar a gestionar", adelantó.

Ante la consulta de la cantidad de votantes y la diferencia conseguida ante Antonio Caselli, el sucesor de Passarella confió que el socio quiso participar y pedir un verdadero cambio: "Nosotros sabíamos que íbamos a ganar y que a mayor afluencia, mayor sería la diferencia".

"Lo que no esperábamos era que supere la marca de 18 mil socios, eso me sorprendió un poco, pero tiene que ver con que los hinchas querían que la cosa cambie de verdad, que se terminen las bandas que hacen política para servirse de River y no servir al club. Nosotros le dimos esa oportunidad", comentó.

D´Onofrio, que ganó la contienda electoral por 20 puntos de diferencia y obtuvo la mayor cantidad de votos de la historia eleccionaria de River, se propuso: "Ahora sólo hay que trabajar y no creer que al club lo salva una persona, sino que es todo un equipo de trabajo".

"Soy una persona normal, no quiero que me digan que soy un fenómeno, a mí gusta la idea de la meritocracia que significa que los éxitos se logran con trabajo, sacrificio y profesionalidad, y eso lo quiero para la gestión y para el equipo de fútbol".

En cuanto al futuro, D´Onofrio soñó con tiempos de glorias, con tiempos de más copas en las vitrinas y con un equipo que vuelva a ser un orgullo nacional en todo el mundo por los triunfos deportivos a nivel internacional.

"La verdad es que sueño que dentro de cuatro años hayamos ganado de nuevo la Copa Libertadores y que estemos jugando una final de Copa del Mundo. Vamos a trabajar cada día para poder lograrlo y para que cada hincha en cada punto del país los disfrute", concluyó D´Onofrio.

El dirigente, que será el presidente número 22 en la historia del club, obtuvo 10.248 votos, más del 55 por ciento de los sufragios, con lo que superó en poco menos de 4 mil votos a Antonio Caselli, que salió segundo con 6378 votos (34,7 por ciento).

Som stor Boca-fan må jeg dog sige, at jeg er utrolig skuffet over denne sæson, hvor vi havde håbet på, at det hele ville vende. På trods af ankomsten af Cata Diaz og Gago må man bare indse, at holdet slet ikke er godt nok, og at de mangler utrolig meget stabilitet. Riquelme har heller ikke været i stand til at være den magiker, man havde håbet på, særligt på grund af hans dårlige form. En dårlig defensiv og mange svingende resultater har desværre sendt Boca ud i kulden. Det så nu heller ikke lovende ud i de første mange kampe, da holdet kun viste, at de kunne skabe resultater på hjemmebane. Det er simpelthen bare for sløjt. Men jeg glæder mig til næste sæson, hvor der formentlig er en masse forbedringer. Også dejligt at se Paredes tilbage i spil her i slutningen af sæsonen, og så kan man jo også glæde sig over Gigliottis høje og stabile niveau gennem sæsonen, der har betydet, at man ikke har savnet Santiago Silva. Andre offensive spillere har også vist et højt niveau hele vejen igennem, bl.a. Sanchez Mino og Juan Martinez har holdt et fint niveau.
Men defensivt skal der gøres noget, når man har ambitioner om at vinde mesterskabet samt at kvalificere sig til Copa Libertadores.

Tja spørgsmålet er vel om Boca ikke overpræsterede i denne sæson? De stillede så vidt jeg ved aldrig i stærkeste opstilling, grundet det hav af skader de har haft hele året.

Jeg forstod aldrig behovet for Gago - han er kronisk skadet, Riquelme var også meget skadesplaget, Paredes og Sánchez Mino også. Det bliver bedre næste sæson.

Spg´et er hvad der sker her her i transfer vinduet både Paredes og Sanchez Mino rygtes til Europa - det samme gør målmand Orion, PSG skulle have kig på ham, der skal vel sælges spillere hvis nye skal hentes ind - de har brug for som du siger forstørkninger i forsvaret og i angrebet som supplement til Pumaen, All Boys backen Hernán Grana er så godt som sikker af forstærkninger pt.

Lammens apunta a un centrodelantero

BUENOS AIRES -- El presidente de San Lorenzo, Matías Lammens, adelantó que va a contratar "un centrodelantero de nivel" como refuerzo para el próximo torneo local y la Copa Libertadores.

"Vamos a contratar un centrodelantero de nivel porque Martín Cauteruccio recién va a poder volver en mayo", sostuvo Lammens, previo al viaje a Roma, donde se encontrará en una audiencia con el Papa Francisco, al que le entregarán una réplica de la Copa ganada por el torneo Inicial y una camiseta azulgrana.

El uruguayo Cauteruccio era el goleador de San Lorenzo cuando en setiembre sufrió rotura de ligamentos de rodilla derecha y dejó sin centrodelantero al equipo, y encima luego se lesionó el juvenil Gonzalo Verón.

Bernardo Romeo admitió sentir una nueva sensación al celebrar como manager un título con San Lorenzo, se mostró emocionado por ver al Papa Francisco, y auguró que al equipo se le "vienen cosas importantes a futuro".

"Es algo nuevo para mí. Venia de pelear el descenso y dejé el fútbol. Fue un golpe, y ahora el título como manager, por el que tengo que agradecerle a los jugadores que dejaron la vida", sostuvo Romeo en el aeroparque, previo al viaje a Roma.

Romeo calificó de "impresionante" la concentración de hinchas e San Juan y Boedo.

"Nos preparamos para jugar tres campeonatos. En uno nos fuimos jugando bien con River, después llegó el golpe de la Copa Argentina en Catamarca y ahora estábamos todos eseranzados en dar la vuelta y se dio", contó.

Pero, además auguró un futuro atractivo para el equipo: "Se vienen cosas importantes", sostuvo en clara referencia a la Copa Libertadoes de Amperica, el titulo que los hinchas y dirigentes de San Lorenzo tienene ntre ceja y ceja ya que nuna lo pudieron ganar.

Sobre el encuentro con el Papa, dijo que van a "ofrecerle el campeonato al hincha número uno".

Tinelli: "Fue la mano de Torrico, la mano de Dios, la mano del Papa"

BUENOS AIRES -- El vicepresidente y hombre fuerte de San Lorenzo, Marcelo Tinelli, destacó que solo irá a "agradecer" y no a pedirle al Papa Francisco, al que le ofrendarán el título del club del que ambos son hinchas.

"Recuerdo cuando el Papa dijo que rezaba tres veces por día por San Lorenzo, cuando pidió que gane San Lorenzo. Salimos campeones, mañana es el cumpleaños de Francisco...este encuentro parece hecho por Dios", sostuvo Tinelli antes de empezar el viaje a Roma.

Tinelli confió que vio el partido en su casa con su familia y que sufrió cuando Agustín Allione metió ese remate en el palo y el que sacó milagrosamente Sebastián Torrico.

"Fue la mano de Torrico, la mano de Dios, la mano del Papa", dijo Tinelli en el Aeroparque, feliz como hincha y directivo del ´Ciclón´.

El empresario dijo que le leva una camiseta, la réplica de la Copa y "algunos productos argentinos que a Francisco le gustan".

Tinelli confió que en el viaje hablará con el presidente Matías Lammens y con el manager Bernardo Romeo sobre los posibles refuerzos, que serían tres, debido a la baja de Gonzalo Verón, que no podrá jugar en casi todo el próximo semestre.

El empresario resaltó el trabajo del entrenador Juan Antonio Pizzi y el comportamiento tanto de la dirigencia e hinchas de Vélez durante el partido que ungió a San Lorenzo campeón en Liniers, y el de los simpatizantes azulgrana durante la caravana festiva en San Juan y Boedo.

Sebastián Torrico, que se transformó en el héroe de la tarde del título con una espectacular atajada a Agustín Allione, admitió que vive una secuencia de momentos, inesperados un año atrás.

"De estar hace un año en Godoy Cruz, al pasar a un equipo grande, salir campeón y mañana ver al Papa es algo increíble", sostuvo Torrico, al que le preguntaron una y otra vez por la atajada monumental a Allione, que aseguró el título.

"Por cómo me abrazaban mis compañeros parecía que había atajado un penal", sostuvo Torrico con cierta timidez en el aeroparque metropolitano, a la espera de abordar el avión que lo llevo a Roma para encontrarse por primera vez con el Papa.

Torrico, quien llegó a San Lorenzo para ocupar la plaza que dejó Pablo Migliore cuando fue encarcelado por una causa de encubrimiento, contó que fue a la madrugada, durante la cena de celebración, cuando los dirigentes le ofrecieron integrar la comitiva rumbo al Vaticano.

"No lo dudé un momento por más que empezaba la vacaciones", sostuvo sobre el ofrecimiento de conocer a Francisco.

Torrico mostró claramente su humildad pese a ser el héroe de momento en San Lorenzo y no solo es un título lo que brilla. "Un tiene que agradecer la salud, la familia", resaltó, mientras abrazaba una réplica de la Copa que le entregarán al Papa.
