Tom Marshall: Five Liga MX players ready to move to Europe

The January transfer window is about to open in Europe and teams in the top leagues will be looking for reinforcements from all corners of the world. That includes Mexico, where there are number of interesting players in different stages of development that could do a job.

Here are five that have a chance of hopping across the pond next month.

Carlos Pena

“Gullit” Pena has the physical attributes to instantly compete at a good-level European club, with his large frame and exceptional stamina over the full 90 minutes.

The Leon midfielder has also become a much more rounded player over the last 12 months, with improvement in his distribution and positioning adding to his ability to get goals from midfield.

The figurehead of Leon’s run to the Apertura 2013 title, the 23-year-old has grown with the club from the second division title and is at the right age to make the move. The possibility of improvement is latent and Pena seems to have the right attitude and maturity to make a European move work.

Pena won’t be cheap and his poor performance at the Gold Cup last summer is a negative, but teams out there may just think he’s worth a punt ahead of next summer’s World Cup, when the midfielder is very likely to be one of Mexico’s mainstays under Miguel Herrera.

His price after Brazil 2014 may just improve significantly.

Oribe Peralta

Put simply, if a club wants a striker that is ready to go, can provide at least a couple of seasons guaranteed service and has some money to spend, it couldn’t really do any better than sign the internationally-proven Oribe Peralta.

Peralta has said he won’t make sacrifices to move to Europe in terms of wages, but the CONCACAF player of the season if a ready-made goal machine for a club out there.

The fact he turns 30 in January may put many clubs off, but 52 goals in his last 78 games in the Liga MX is an astonishing ratio and one that few players have historically done, considering the consistency. Jackson Martinez scored 33 goals in 55 games for Chiapas and took to the Portuguese league with consummate ease. There’s little reason that Peralta couldn’t make a similar impact.

Jefferson Montero

The Ecuadorian international could be part of perhaps the most exciting teams in the Copa Libertadores next season at Morelia, with Aldo Leao, Hector Mancilla and Duvier Riascos providing a mouthwatering offense.

But Montero is already proven in Europe after a spell with Real Betis, is now hitting his prime at 24 and has reportedly garnered interest from the likes of Arsenal. And for those who regularly watch him, that is little surprise. The winger rips defenses apart, makes assists and scores goals.

It seems like only a matter of time before Montero does move and while Morelia has stated he won’t be leaving this transfer window, the club has other attacking talent and European suitors may not want to waste any more time in chasing him.

Raul Jimenez

The Club America striker’s form slipped slightly towards the end of 2013, but that was predominantly down to a busy year, which included reaching two finals with Las Aguilas, the Gold Cup, Confederations Cup and World Cup qualifiers.

Physically and mentality, that is a lot of high-pressure games for the 22-year-old in one season and the striker has responded, most noticeably by saving Mexico’s World Cup qualifying campaign with a spectacular overhead kick against Panama.

Jimenez is one of the few Olympic gold winners to impress since London 2012, has exceptional touch for someone who is 6-foot-3 tall and has a good soccer brain.

Yet there is also room for improvement, most obviously in his decision-making in the final third. But rather than that being simply a negative, it also means Jimenez could be nurtured by a European club to become a top player, possibly to sell on.

In a similar way to Jimenez, Mexican striker Alan Pulido deserves a mention for his impressive performances at Tigres. But the America player is better prepared for a European move simply because he has national team experience and has been a starter at America for the last 18 months.

Miguel Layun

It’s difficult to overstate how impressive the 25-year-old wing back has been in 2013, especially considering how criticized Layun was before Miguel Herrera arrived as coach of the club.

Layun is still the only Mexican to play in Serie A, possesses a level of athleticism that is rare in Mexican football and has been one of the best players in the Liga MX over the last 12 months.

The America player is fast, skillful, can put in good crosses, score goals and can get up and down the wing for the full 90 minutes.

If there is a weakness, it is in the defensive third and there is still a question mark over whether Layun can operate at the top level as a fullback in a back four.

Given the attacking threat Layun provides, it may just be a risk worth taking for a European club

Maxi Núñez se va al Sporting Cristal

LIMA -- El mediocampista argentino Maximiliano Núñez acordó condiciones para sumarse al Sporting Cristal de Perú, entidad con la que jugará la fase preliminar de la edición 2014 de la Copa Libertadores.

El jugador, de 27 años, procede de All Boys, club en el que disputó 9 partidos y marcó un gol en el último torneo Inicial argentino.

Núñez, ex Temperley, Estudiantes de La Plata y San Martín de San Juan, entre otras entidades, se desvinculó de la institución de Floresta, en condición de libre por falta de pago de sus haberes.

Núñez ya firmó su contrato y se entrenará desde el lunes 6 de enero con su nuevo equipo, que será dirigido por el también argentino Daniel Ahmed, ex entrenador del Seleccionado Sub 20 peruano.

Sporting Cristal jugará la etapa preliminar de la Libertadores, midiéndose en la primera eliminatoria con Atlético Paranaense, de Brasil, entre el 29 de enero y el 5 de febrero próximo.

Gimnasia: Onofri no descarta la llegada de Mauro Matos

LA PLATA -- El presidente de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, Daniel Onofri, no dio por caída aún la llegada del goleador de All Boys, Mauro Matos, quien podría sumarse a préstamo al equipo que conduce Pedro Troglio.

"No quiero garantizar nada. Estamos haciendo todo lo posible, cuidando los intereses económicos del club", mencionó el directivo, en declaraciones a Radio La Redonda.

A pesar de que el dirigente no lo hizo público, fuentes cercanas a la entidad platense confiaron que All Boys "bajó la tasación" que había impuesto en el comienzo de las charlas.

"De los cinco millones que había pedido por el préstamo en un momento ahora la operación se haría en 2,5 millones", reveló a Télam una fuente de la institución tripera.

En teoría, el presidente albo, Roberto Bugallo, estaría dispuesto a desprenderse del delantero, de 31 años, en un monto menor al solicitado oportunamente, en virtud de que el propio futbolista ya le manifestó su deseo de alejarse.

De esta manera, la operación por Matos podría resolverse en los próximos días, ya que el DT Troglio aguarda su arribo para que comience junto al resto de sus futuros compañeros las labores de pretemporada, en Estancia Chica.

En caso de que se frustre la incorporación del jugador de All Boys, Gimnasia ya centró sus cañones en otro delantero: el chaqueño Antonio Medina, con poco rodaje en Rosario Central.

Edgardo Bauza: "La Copa Libertadores es un objetivo en San Lorenzo"

BUENOS AIRES -- El flamante entrenador de San Lorenzo de Almagro, Edgardo Bauza, dijo que la dirigencia del club de Boedo no le planteó como objetivo esencial ganar la Copa Libertadores de América 2014, aunque pondrán el énfasis en ese certamen porque el "Ciclón" nunca lo logró.

"Los dirigentes no me plantearon ganar la Copa Libertadores, pero ese objetivo está", expresó el director técnico.

Y agregó: "La Libertadores es un objetivo, mucho más en San Lorenzo que nunca la ganó".

En cuanto a la llegada de las incorporaciones, Bauza admitió que están "en conversaciones" con el delantero Nicolás Blandi, jugador que el lunes cerraría su llegada al club, y que también podrían reforzarse en la mitad de la cancha.

"No hemos definido en qué puestos hace falta reforzar. Hablaremos el 3 de enero cuando llegue a Argentina", resaltó el "Patón".

Bauza, quien proviene de La Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito, club con el que ganó la Copa Libertadores 2008, expresó además las ganas que tenía de volver a trabajar en el fútbol argentino. "Hace seis años que no dirijo en Argentina y en los dos últimos años se ha incrementado el vértigo", aseguró el entrenador, que en nuestro país comandó los equipos de Rosario Central, Vélez Sarsfield y Colón de Santa Fe.

Y continuó: "Yo no veo aburrido al fútbol argentino, por ahí no es bien jugado, pero es rápido y dinámico". El fútbol argentino es atípico porque el primero puede perder con el ultimo, eso pasa solo en Argentina".

Claudio Borghi dirigirá a Argentinos

BUENOS AIRES -- Tras analizarlo durante varios días, Claudio Borghi dio su respuesta afirmativa y, de esta manera, regresa a Argentinos Juniors, club donde supo ser campeón como jugador y como entrenador.

El exseleccionador de Chile, que aún se encuentra en Chile, firmará su vínculo hasta junio de 2015.

El "Bichi" tomará al cargo tras la repentina salida de Ricardo Caruso Lombardi, minutos después de la última participación de Argentinos Juniors en el Torneo Inicial y tendrá el claro objetivo de mantener al equipo de La Paternal en la Primera División del fútbol argentino.

Aunque aún resta la confirmación sobre su cuerpo técnico, Borghi llegaría acompañado por Adrian Domenech y Lucas Pusineri como ayudantes de campo. Es un hecho que Hernán Torres será el preparador físico y Carlos San Martín, el entrenador de arqueros.

Argentinos Juniors ocupa el último lugar en la tabla de los promedios y deberá hacer una campaña con una numerosa cantidad de puntos para poder mantenerse en la máxima categoría. El ciclo tendrá su inicio el próximo 4 de enero cuando el plantel volverá al trabajo de cara a la pretemporada a desarrollarse en Mar del Plata.

Maxi Rodríguez brinda por su gran año con Newell´s y un ojo en la selección

ROSARIO -- Maximiliano Rodríguez, ganador del Olimpia de Plata como mejor futbolista de 2013 en la Argentina, despide el año levantando la copa por la mejor temporada que tuvo con Newell´s, el club de sus amores, y con la expectativa de estar el año próximo en Brasil su tercer mundial de fútbol.

En las últimas horas hubo un anuncio de AFA que le pone sazón a su participación en el seleccionado, y es que el conjunto nacional que irá a Brasil se despediría con un amistoso en el Coloso Marcelo Bielsa de Rosario.

"Sería algo muy lindo poder jugar con la selección acá, en casa. La verdad que sería una despedida muy linda y ojala que se puede llegar a dar, pero te soy sincero, no sé nada", sostuvo Maxi en diálogo con DyN, listo para iniciar sus vacaciones, tras jugar el partido que anualmente organiza la Fundación PUPI, de su amigo Javier Zanetti.

El partido sería entre el 4 y 7 de junio, unos días antes del comienzo del Mundial. Maxi no habla del seleccionado, pero es número puesto entre los 23 y el último partido ante Bosnia-Herzegovina fue fundamental con un formato de 4-4-2 en el que La Fiera formó con Angel Di María una dupla de medios que se acoplaron al ataque, dándole a Alejandro Sabella otro esquema alternativo que eventualmente podría utilizar en Brasil.

Es un secreto a voces que Messi quiere jugar en ese estadio y alguna vez Julio Grondona dio a entender que le gustaría satisfacer el deseo del futbolista en el que se depositan las esperanzas de volver a levantar la Copa del Mundo.

Maxi dijo a esta agencia haber tenido "un año inolvidable".

"Viví los mejores momentos con la camiseta que yo quiero, como salir campeón con Newell´s, llegar a la semifinales de la Libertadores y pelear hasta la última fecha otro torneo", sostuvo.

Aseguró que "así como nosotros nos vamos dando cuenta de lo que conseguimos, la gente también lo irá recordando y sé que está muy agradecida por los que hicimos en Newell´s".

Insistió que al zaguero Gabriel Heinze lo van a "esperar" a que decida si sigue o deja el fútbol, y que respetarán "su decisión personal, que debe analizar con su familia".

No obstante puso su granito de arena para que su compañero siga al hacer ver que "es un jugador muy importante y lo vamos a esperar con los brazos abiertos", el 7 de enero cuando el plantel vuelva de sus vacaciones.

British paper believe Real Madrid interested in Tottenham’s Paulinho

British newspaper the Sunday Telegraph have reported that Real Madrid are interesting in signing Brazil and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Paulinho.

The Spanish giants have raided the English club the previous two summers and could attempt to do the same again with Los Blancos manager Carlo Ancelotti a huge fan of the 25-year-old.

Paulinho is said to be settled in England, and made his return from a three-match ban this afternoon during Tottenham 3-0 win over Stoke.

Although the club has suffering an inconsistent season so far, the Brazilian has largely been praised. He has made 23 appearances for his new team and scored four times.

When he signing for Tottenham, after the Confederations Cup, he rejected the advances of Roma, Inter Milan and CSKA Moscow to join the Premier League club and link up with fellow Brazilians Sandro and Heurelho Gomes.

The former Corinthians midfielder will be a key player for Luiz Felipe Scolari in the 2014 World Cup and if he were to move to Spain it would be after that tournament.

As mentioned, the report insists he is not unhappy at Tottenham and is not looking for a move but may find it hard to reject Real Madrid if they come in for him. The north London side will be bracing themselves for another summer transfer saga with the Spanish club.

Santos wasted no time in their preparations for the 2014 Brazilian season, creating waves in the transfer market with a couple of high profile moves, and links with several more.

They appointed a new manager in the shape of the highly regarded former Botafogo coach Oswaldo de Oliveira. The Rio native took his Botafogo side on an unexpected rollercoaster ride last season, which included a brief title challenge and eventual Libertdores qualification.

Since Oliveria took over, Santos have been heavily linked with promising players such as Botafogo’s wonderkid centre back Dória, and the exciting Chilean winger Eduardo Vargas. They signalled their intent by signing a player once touted as a future Brazil number 9, Leandro Damião.

It wasn’t so long ago that Damião was linked with some of the big teams in Europe, with the usual Italian clubs hovering around the next Brazilian star, as well as ongoing links with English clubs Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

During the 2013 season however, Damião’s star fell somewhat as he only managed 5 goals in 26 appearances for Porto Alegre side Internacional. It was a season in which much was expected from their strike force of Diego Forlán, Ignacio Scocco, and Damião, but the trio failed to live up to expectations. It was left to experienced attacking midfielder Andrés D´Alessandro to score the goals which steered the club known as Colorado clear of the relegation zone.

As a result of this poor form the interest from Europe quietened, but third party investment group Doyen Sports weren’t deterred.

The same third party who took one of the best poachers in world football, Radamel Falcao, to the football tax haven that is Monaco, now owns 70% of Damião whilst Santos pay up for his considerable wage. Even though the third party should decrease the gamble that is paying big money for a player out of form, it could still be very costly for Santos should the player fail to perform.

Returning to the player himself, there are many eyebrows raised when one of the higher profile players in Brazil moves within the Brazilian league, rather than packing his bags for foreign lands. There were similar murmurs when Dedé left Vasco da Gama for Cruzeiro rather than moving to Europe, but the centre back’s move was justified, at least in terms of domestic success, as Cruzeiro ran out winners of the 2013 Brasileirão.

Whether it affected Dedé’s international chances is up for debate, but it proved that a move within the league can be successful, even if Dedé’s transfer occurred under different circumstances, as it was forced through quickly to boost Vasco’s ailing finances.

Regardless of the financial details surrounding his transfer, Damião now finds himself as a marquee signing at a popular club, with a chance to re-make his name as one of the top centre forwards in Brazil. It’s a position in which Brazil is currently lacking depth at national level, and a successful season at the Vila Belmiro could be much more fruitful than warming a bench in Europe.

Lammens: "Sigo dolido con Pizzi"

BUENOS AIRES -- El presidente de San Lorenzo, Matías Lammens, afirmó que continúa "dolido" por la decisión del entrenador Juan Antonio Pizzi, quien luego de la obtención del Torneo Inicial 2013, se alejó del club para continuar su carrera en Valencia de España.

"Todavía sigo dolido con la actitud de Pizzi porque no me gustó su actitud y no la esperaba", señaló Lammens en diálogo con radio La Red.

Y agregó: "me sorprendió su ida porque lo sostuvimos cuando casi todos querían su salida".

De todas maneras, apuntó que la rescisión del contrato de Pizzi resultó "beneficioso" para San Lorenzo porque el resarcimiento económico le deparó cinco millones de pesos.

Por otra parte, Lammens confirmó que San Lorenzo comprará el 50 por ciento del pase del delantero de Boca Juniors Nicolás Blandi, el cual fue tasado en dos millones de dólares: "Mañana (lunes) me junto con su representante y ya tenemos un preacuerdo con Boca".

El titular de San Lorenzo señaló que jugadores como Héctor Villalba y Ángel Correa son "intransferibles" hasta junio: "Son las dos joyas que tenemos y queremos afrontar la Copa Libertadores con ellos, para no desmantelar el plantel con semejante compromiso".

Además, Lammens indicó que el defensor de Newcastle de Inglaterra, Fabricio Coloccini, no retornará a San Lorenzo: "Es imposible por su situación contractual".

Por último, el presidente del club de Boedo señaló que el 3 de enero de 2014, arribará a Argentina el entrenador Edgardo Bauza, para firmar su contrato con San Lorenzo: "A partir de ahí tendremos conversaciones con él en persona, pero estamos muy contentos".

San Lorenzo, flamante campeón del Torneo Inicial 2013, afrontará el primer semestre del año 2014 con nuevo entrenador, Edgardo Bauza en reemplazo de Juan Antonio Pizzi, para competir por el Torneo Final y la Copa Libertadores.

Lucas Ocampos está en la mira de Juventus

El volante de Monaco, que comenzó su carrera en River, es seguido de cerca por la Vecchia Signora. Puede llegar a pasar en enero de Francia a Italia.
No sólo se imaginan en Italia que pueden sumar a otro argentino, sino que algunos medios ya dan como una posibilidad que se juegue un clásico River-Boca en cada entrenamiento de Juventus. Para eso, se debería confirmar el rumor que ubica a Lucas Ocampos, volante argentino de Monaco, en la Vecchia Signora. Y además, debería entrenarse en el equipo contrario de Carlos Tevez.

Por el momento, lo que se sabe es que el diario Tuttosport contó cómo la Juve va detrás de "un talento particular todavía demasiado joven". Sin dar demasiada más información, aseguró que el objetivo del equipo de Antonio Conte y compañía es Ocampos, que alterna en el escolta de la Ligue 1.
