Predicting Chivas´ 2014 Clausura starting XI

The new season is slowly creeping up and Chivas´ preseason warm-up matches are very much in full swing, with the first team drawing 1-1 draw against San Luis last Friday and losing 4-0 against Queretaro on Monday.

Jose Luis Real has already given some strong indications of what his team might look like for the new season and how the incoming recruits will knit together with the existing players.

"El Guero" is likely to play a 4-4-2 formation that at time looks more like a 4-2-4, with both the wide midfielders charged primarily with impacting the attacking third.

In goal, youngster Antonio Rodriguez has the edge at present. The 21-year-old started against San Luis and Queretaro and has been praised by Real, who told this blog earlier this year that Rodriguez has all the facets to succeed Luis Michel when the time is right.

Hugo Hernandez will be disappointed that his experience on loan at Puebla hasn´t helped him nail down the No. 1 shirt, while Michel still hasn´t moved despite being transfer-listed, but Real stated on Monday that the veteran will not feature this season.

Right back has been a real headache for Chivas in recent seasons, but Real´s solution seems to be Nestor Vidrio, who usually features at center back. The former Atlas player should bring more solidity to the position than the club has seen in recent seasons, although he doesn´t add much going forward.

Jesus "Chapo" Sanchez could also do the job, although he´s not a natural in the position and you have to question whether he is up to it considering he isn´t a defender. The club´s other first team right backs, Omar Esparza and Edgar Solis, continue on their comeback trail from injuries and should be available to Real at some point this Clausura.

On the other flank, new signing Gerardo Rodriguez has the spot all to himself now that Miguel Ponce isn´t at the club, with Hedgardo Marin and Juan Pablo Ocegueda behind him in the pecking order.

Center back suddenly seems much stronger for Chivas this season. The heart of the defense was ripped out when Hector Reynoso left for Morelia, but bringing in Jair Pereira to replace him should mean more consistency at the back for Chivas.

Alongside him, there is a battle brewing. Vidrio remains an option, although Real fielded Pato Araujo there against San Luis. Normally a defensive midfielder, Araujo has played center back before with some success and it could be that the coach opts for the 25-year-old alongside Pereira at the start of season and gives him a chance to win the spot. Behind those two are Kristian Alvarez and Victor Perales, both of whom are from the youth system, already having seen first team minutes and can do a job.

In the central midfield positions, Israel Castro will be charged with pinning the side together and shielding the defense, with Jorge Enriquez alongside. It is a combination that should give Olympic-winner Enriquez the freedom to break out of his hugely underwhelming dip in form since London 2012.

Araujo could shift into midfield if there are any injuries, but Chivas look slightly short in the center of the pitch, with only inexperienced youth teamers behind them. Stopping the flow of goals against that came all too regularly in 2013 will be the key to Chivas next season, but there are reasons to be positive about this Guadalajara side in the final third.

Omar Bravo and Carlos Fierro should be a decent combination on the wings, but there is a worry that both are naturally better suited to playing more down the middle. They are certainly not out-an-out winger types.

Upfront, Rafa Marquez Lugo and Aldo de Nigris is one of the most dangerous partnerships in the Liga MX, and if they can show it, Chivas could be one of the more exciting teams this season.

Marquez Lugo can drop off into the space between the opposition defense and midfield to good effect, while De Nigris is a straight number nine, who really should benefit from the crosses Fierro and Bravo can provide.

Giovani Hernandez, Julio Gomez, Angel Zaldivar and Eduardo Lopez offer decent, if not proven, backup in the forward positions, although Real favorite Erick "Cubo" Torres, currently at Chivas USA, would substantially improve the coach´s options off the bench.

On paper, this Chivas side should be able to distance itself from the relegation places in the 2014 Apertura, but there still seems to be a lack of depth in certain positions. Not getting important players injured or suspended will be key.

Predicted Chivas team (4-4-2): A Rodriguez, Vidrio, Araujo, Pereira, G Rodriguez, Enriquez, Castro, Fierro, Bravo, Marquez Lugo, De Nigris.

Sosa busca jugar en España con miras a un lugar en la selección

BUENOS AIRES -- El mediocampista santafesino José Sosa jugaría los próximos seis meses en el fútbol español con la intención de convencer a Alejandro Sabella y ganarse un lugar en el Mundial de Brasil, y los clubes que están interesados en contratarlo son Atlético de Madrid y Málaga.

El ex Estudiantes de La Plata le pidió a la dirigencia del club ucraniano Metalist (donde milita actualmente) que le permita jugar seis meses a préstamo en otro conjunto europeo con la intención de ganar nuevamente terreno en la consideración de Sabella.

"Hemos escuchado la petición de José Sosa que quería un lugar en el equipo nacional de Argentina para participar en el Mundial 2014, que se realizará en Brasil", dijo el presidente del Metalist, Sergei Kurchenko, en el comunicado que publicó el club.

Y agregó: "Teniendo en cuenta las contribuciones de José al desarrollo del club y el hecho de que los campeonatos en los países europeos pasan en invierno, a diferencia de Ucrania, hemos decidido permitirle a Sosa irse de alquiler a uno de los clubes europeos por un periodo de seis meses".

Sosa fue campeón en Estudiantes con Diego Simeone como entrenador, en 2006, y el actual técnico "colchonero" estaría interesado en contar con él, aunque el Málaga que dirige el alemán Bernd Schuster también quiere sumarlo a sus filas.

Acevedo ya está recuperado y con ganas de volver a jugar

ZARAGOZA -- El centrocampista Walter Acevedo ha asegurado que se encuentra ya recuperado y en condiciones de volver a ayudar al equipo tras la lesión muscular que se produjo a comienzos del mes de diciembre.

"Estoy listo para volver a ayudar al equipo, y ojalá pueda aportar cosas para que mejore y podamos mirar hacia arriba", ha manifestado tras el entrenamiento matinal en la Ciudad Deportiva.

Al argentino se le diagnosticó una rotura miofascial en el músculo semitendinoso del muslo derecho tras someterse a una resonancia nuclear magnética, tras sufrir una recaída en la fase final de su recuperación.

Acevedo ha renunciado a viajar en las fiestas navideñas a su país para ultimar su recuperación y así poder estar a disposición del entrenador Paco Herrera para el primer partido del 2014 ante el Sporting de Gijón.

Las lesiones le han mantenido alejado una larga temporada de los terrenos de juego, por eso ha afirmado que "hace mucho tiempo que esperaba este partido" para ayudar al equipo a situarse en la parte alta de la clasificación de la que ha insistido "no estamos tan lejos".

Clemente Rodríguez no seguirá en San Pablo

RÍO DE JANEIRO -- El lateral izquierdo argentino Clemente Rodríguez, de 32 años, no seguirá en el equipo brasileño de San Pablo, entidad que ya comunicó que será vendido o cedido a préstamo.

La Comisión Directiva del San Pablo le comunicó a Clemente Rodríguez, ex jugador de Boca y Estudiantes de la Plata, que no seguirá en el club `tricolor´ y que se buscarán interesados en su contratación.

El diario deportivo ´Lance!´ señaló hoy que "el gerente Gustavo Vieira (del San Pablo), se comunicó ya con los agentes del jugador argentino para que busquen interesados en sus servicios" e indicó que "es poco probable su retorno a Boca Juniors".

Cabe recordar que Boca ya completó los dos cupos disponibles para el torneo Final 2014 con la contratación de los defensores Hernán Grana y Juan Forlín.

Clemente Rodríguez, quien llegó a Brasil en junio pasado, disputó apenas tres partidos con el San Pablo, sumando dos derrotas (Bahía, 2-1; y Cruzeiro, 3-0) y un empate (Atlético Paranaense, 1-1), además de sumar una expulsión contra el equipo bahiano.

El lateral, surgido del fútbol juvenil de Los Andes, jugó también en Spartak de Moscú; y Espanyol de Barcelona.


São Paulo tell Clemente Rodríguez to find a new club

Clemente Rodríguez has been told that he can leave São Paulo and find a new team after failing to become a first team regular at Tricolor according to Lancenet.

The Argentine defender joined the club in June and was expected to solve their problems on the left side of defence but his time got off to a disastrous start.

The left-back was sent off against Bahia in his Brasileirão debut for the club and only went on to feature two more times.

He suffered from injuries during his spell with Tricolor and fatefully before São Paulo’s overseas trip to the Audi Cup become injured again. The left-back problem was solved on that trip and Rodríguez couldn’t force his way back in again.

The 32-year-old has played for a number of clubs during his 13-year career but has spent the majority of his time at Boca Juniors.

However, there is a vast difference in money between the Brazilian and Argentinian game and although in a recent interview Rodríguez said he would like a return to Argentina it seems unlikely.

Rodríguez will hope to find a new club in the off season and try to force his way back into the national team as he appeared twice for La Albiceleste in 2013.

Report: Botafogo readying January bid for Internacional forward Diego Forlán

Botafogo are interested in signing Internacional forward Diego Forlán, according to local reports.

Uol suggests the Rio de Janeiro-based club are hoping that the opportunity to play in the Copa Libertadores will tempt the 34 year-old into making the switch.

The report also claims international team-mate Nicolás Lodeiro, who currently plays for Botafogo, has been tasked with trying to persuade the veteran to join him at the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange, though whether he would want to risk moving in a World Cup year remains unclear.

Forlán, who was signed on a free transfer after leaving Internazionale in June 2012, scored five goals in 15 appearances this season, as Internacional finished just two points above the drop.
