Comienza el Clausura chileno

SANTIAGO DE CHILE -- El torneo chileno de Clausura arrancará este fin de semana con pocas novedades en cuanto a fichajes y con los mismos equipos señalados como favoritos en la disputa del título.

El Clausura, que a diferencia del Apertura jugado en la segunda mitad del 2013 tendrá ascenso, descenso y liguilla de promoción, completará la primera edición del nuevo calendario ´europeo´ 2013-2014 del fútbol chileno.

En lo que se refiera a fichajes, el equipo que más ruido ha hecho es el Colo Colo, que repatrió al experimentado centrocampista Jaime ´Pajarito´ Valdés, que vuelve a Chile después de trece temporadas en Europa, doce de ellas en el fútbol italiano y una en el portugués.

"Mi sueño de niño era jugar en Colo Colo", afirmó Valdés, que cumplirá 33 años el próximo 11 de enero, al ser presentado por su nuevo club, que también fichó al defensa argentino Julio Barroso, proveniente del O´Higgins, de Rancagua, el flamante campeón del Apertura.

Los dirigentes albos, que tras la partida del técnico paraguayo Gustavo Benítez renunciaron a buscar un entrenador de renombre y le entregaron el puesto al responsable de la cantera, Héctor Tapia, quieren repatriar también, desde el Celta de Vigo español, al delantero Fabián Orellana.

La Universidad de Chile vio partir al centrocampista Charles Aránguiz, su mejor figura del 2013 y hasta ahora no ha encontrado un reemplazo.

El miércoles se daba casi por hecha la llegada del argentino Fabián Rinaudo, actualmente en el Sporting de Lisboa, pero en las últimas horas se dijo en Argentina que ficharía en el Catania italiano.

De frustrarse la llegada de Rinaudo, la U de Chile trataría de repatriar desde el Fiorentina italiano al internacional David Pizarro, que tras varias temporadas en Italia e Inglaterra ha manifestado sus deseos de terminar su carrera en Chile.

Hasta ahora, la U sólo ha fichado al defensa argentino Matías Caruzzo, procedente del Boca Juniors, mientras el técnico Marco Antonio Figueroa clama también por "un nueve de área".

La Universidad Católica, que vio partir a su goleador argentino Ismael Sosa al Toluca mexicano y al central Hans Martínez al Almería español, fichó al volante Darío Botinelli y gestiona la llegada del defensa argentino Leonardo Sigali, actualmente en el Godoy Cruz de su país.

El último campeón, O´Higgins, vio partir a su defensa Julio Barroso al Colo Colo y fichó al zaguero de la Universidad de Chile Albert Acevedo y al delantero argentino Gastón Lezcano, anteriormente en el Cobreloa.

La Unión Española, que estará también en la próxima Copa Libertadores, repatrió desde el Granada español al volante Matías Campos Toro y fichó al centrocampista argentino Cristián Chávez, que jugaba en el Lanús de su país.

El O´Higgins abrirá este viernes la jornada inaugural del torneo ante el Deportes Iquique y lo hará con una formación alternativa, pues su técnico argentino Eduardo Berizzo tiene a la plantilla estelar sometida a un trabajo especial, con la mente puesta en la Copa Libertadores.

Por su parte, la Universidad de Chile visitará el sábado al Rangers, la Universidad Católica hará lo propio el día domingo con el Ñublense y el Colo Colo cerrará la jornada en su estadio, ese mismo día, frente al Audax Italiano.

Liga MX Preview: Clausura campaign gets under way

America will hope to make up for their Liga MX Apertura disappointment when the Clausura tournament kicks off this week.

An incredible start to the Apertura campaign, including a run of 10 wins from 12 games, was enough for Miguel Herrera´s side to top the table and saw the 45-year-old step up to the Mexican national job, while also continuing to lead America.

That distraction, with Mexico´s qualification for Brazil 2014 going to a play-off, may have proved costly as they stumbled into the Liguilla final, ultimately losing to Leon.

Antonio Mohamed is Hererra´s replacement, and will be hopeful another strong campaign will be kicked off against Liguilla quarter-final opponents, Tigres UANL.

Leon finished third in the Apertura on their way to the title and begin the Clausura on the road to Atlante.

America´s Super Clasico rivals, Guadalajara, on the other hand, had a disastrous Apertura, finishing 16th of the 18 teams and winning just two of their 17 fixtures.

Jose Luis Real, who led them to the 2010 Copa Libertadores final, has returned from MLS sister club Chivas USA in the mid-season break and will hope to begin his second reign with a win as they travel to Santos Laguna, who finished the Apertura second, losing to Leon at the semi-final stage of the Liguilla.

Morelia and Queretaro suffered heavy Liguilla quarter-final defeats and will hope for better at the start of the Clausura when they face each other.

Toluca and Cruz Azul were the final two sides in the Apertura Liguilla, and they begin the Clausura with trips to Pachuca and Monterrey respectively.

Cruz Azul are another side under new management with Luis Fernando Tena having replaced Guillermo Vazquez.

Atlas and Tijuana will also enter the Clausura with new coaches and begin their campaigns at the former´s Estadio Jalisco. Tomas Boy will begin his third spell in charge of the hosts, while the away side will be led by former Venezuela coach Cesar Farias.

Elsewhere, the Apertura´s bottom club, Pumas UNAM, host Puebla and Veracruz will travel to Chiapas.

Preview of the Liga MX Clausura 2014 Season

In a little less than three weeks after Leon beat Club America in convincing fashion to claim the Liga MX Apertura 2013 title, the Clausura 2014 season will get underway on Friday night as Monarcas Morelia take on Queretaro to officially lift the curtain on the season. While Leon and America will only have about 7-10 days of “preseason” work before the start of the Clausura, other teams will have had close to two months to get ready which makes handicapping what could or might happen in the season ahead all the more fascinating.

What we do know is that we have three clear-cut teams that he can say will be favorites to win the Clausura. Leon obviously will be the team most will consider as the favorite given they are the reigning champions and have boosted their squad even with a limited timetable. One thing that will test how well they perform in Liga MX action will be their participation in the Copa Libertadores. Having stated that winning that competition is a priority, it will be interesting to see if they have a letdown in league play.

In addition to Leon, America — because of their squad and recent league success — will also be a favorite to win the Clausura title. Unlike the past two years when it was coached by Miguel Herrera, America will now be coached by Antonio Mohamed — a man who had success with Xolos de Tijuana as he won the Clausura 2012 title. How he handles the pressure of coaching a big team and how well he gets his new team to play more along his philosophy is a very big unknown that will play out throughout the season. Another team on the short list of favorites is Tgres UANL coached by Ricardo ‘Tuca’ Ferreti.

While Tigres largely underachieved during the Apertura 2013 season, their play against America in the playoffs last season suggests that if Tuca is willing to let his team play more attacking football this team could be a force, especially with the emergence of forward Alan Pulido and the signing of Hernan Dario Burbano. While those three are in the category of favorites, there is also a category of teams that, because they are considered giants of Mexican futbol that disappointed last season, will have a lot to answer.

We have Chivas de Guadalajara who after an embarrassing Apertura 2013 needed to show its fans that it was taking the distinct threat of relegation zone battle seriously. Well, going by their signings and the fact that there is now a new President at the club, Chivas fans go into the Clausura with no hope of things getting better for ‘El Rebano Sagrado’. Like Chivas, Pumas UNAM also had a very disappointing Apertura but were more aggressive in their player signings and their fans will be hoping for a quick start so as not to find themselves with relegation zone looming behind them.

Even though they made the playoffs, Cruz Azul — like Chivas and Pumas — disappointed last season, and as a result club management made several changes. The first was bringing in Luis Fernando Tena to coach the team and be the one who will end the 16-year league title drought. Ironically enough, he was the coach of the last Cruz Azul team win a league title. In addition to Tena, the team brought in the mercurial Marco Fabian on loan as he will be hoping to turn around his career and help end the title drought.

As for the rest, well they fall in a category I like to term ‘it depends.’ Depending on how things go, they can have a good season or a bad season which sees club management make a panic coaching change. Add to it that the World Cup is on the horizon, and it will make for an interesting Clausura campaign filled with drama on and off the field of play.

Tom Marshall: Liga MX Clausura storylines

Just 19 days after Rafa Marquez hoisted the Liga MX trophy for Leon in front of a largely disgruntled Estadio Azteca, Mexico’s first division starts again with the Clausura 2014 championship.

With the World Cup coming up in June, the Copa Libertadores and CONCACAF Champions League, the Liga MX will well be worth watching this season and there are plenty of storylines to follow.

Here are a few:

America

Club America is once again one of the favorites for the title, with incoming manager Antonio Mohamed promising not to meddle too much with the style of his predecessor Miguel Herrera.

The lack of distractions from other competitions – America fell out of the CONCACAF Champions League at the group stage last year – coupled with a squad highly motivated by the prospect of making the Mexico party for the World Cup in June means there are plenty of reasons to believe Las Aguilas could make a third consecutive final, especially if new striker Andres Rios starts to fire.

Mexico’s World Cup group rivals Brazil, Croatia and Cameroon will be especially interested in how America does this season.

Young, foreign coaches

Fiery Venezuelan coach Cesar Farias certainly made his mark on the national team of his homeland and comes into the Liga MX with Club Tijuana as one of a growing number of young, talented foreign coaches from outside of Mexico in the league.

Farias, along with Pedro Caixinha at Santos Laguna, Mohamed and Leon’s Gustavo Matosas, has his sights set on eventually moving to Europe, is labeled the “Venezuelan Mourinho” for his polemic statements and will be fascinating to follow in 2014.

Morelia

Keep your eyes on Monarcas next season, especially if they can hang on to winger Jefferson Montero for the next six months. It should be a fun ride.

The Michoacan club boasts a lethal offense, with Aldo Leao, Montero, Duvier Riascos and Hector Mancilla that has the capacity to rip teams apart.

Uruguayan international Egidio Arevalo will add steel in the center of the field, while central defenders Hector Reynoso, Felipe Baloy and Joel Huiqui are big, strong players who are good in the air but susceptible to the odd mistake on the ground.

It should all come together to make Morelia not-to-miss team this Clausura.

Relegation

At the end of the Clausura regular season, one team will be heading down to the Ascenso MX and it looks like being Atlante.

The Cancun-based team is eight points adrift of the Liga MX relegation table – worked out by the points to games played ratio over the last six seasons – with Atlas second from last, Puebla and Chiapas FC both 12 points above and Chivas 16 points clear.

Veracruz ended last season terribly and with the volatility in its ratio – due to it recently having been promoted – a very poor season could easy see it drop into the relegation fight.

Atlante will be looking for Ecuadorian duo Narciso Mina and Michael Arroyo to reignite a partnership that was prolific in Ecuador and fire in the goals to put pressure on Atlas and Veracruz early on in the season.

Chivas

The soap opera of change in Guadalajara continued over the offseason, with Jose Luis Real coming in as coach and Dennis te Kloese leaving his role of sporting president.

The reality at the club – Mexico’s most successful along with America – is that it is likely to be in a relegation battle in 12 months time unless it has a significantly improved 2014.

Omar Bravo, Israel Castro, Gerardo Rodriguez and Jair Pereira were brought in over the break and their experience will be crucial in lifting a flagship team that the Liga MX really needs to be fighting at the other end of the table.

Palmeiras boost squad upon return to top flight

Palmeiras have started planning for life back in the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A by confirming the signing of defensive midfielder Franca from German side Hannover 96.

The 22 year-old, who has previously played in his homeland with Coritiba and Criciuma, joins on loan for the 2014 season.

Palmeiras, who along with Santos share the most National Championships with eight, dropped out of the top division at the end of 2012 but managed to safely steer their way to promotion at the first time of asking.

On the same day as Franca´s signing, Palmeiras also announced that joining them for the coming season would be 26 year-old former Portuguesa striker Diogo. The pair will be aiming to line up for the Sao Paulo side with Brazil stalwart Lucio, who joined on January 1st.

Real Madrid sign Figueirense starlet

Real Madrid have today announced the signing of a young Brazilian striker on loan who will immediately be farmed to their feeder side Castilla in order to complete his EU residency.

Pablo Felipe Teixeira, a 21 year-old from Figueirense, follows in the footsteps of countryman Casemiro who made a similar switch to Madrid in 2013.

Real manager Carlo Ancelotti has spoken about being inactive during this January´s transfer window, both in terms of players joining and leaving.

However, the form of Teixeira, who managed to net nine times for Figueirense in last year´s Campeonato Brasileiro, has persuaded Ancelotti to make his move.

Madrid also have Brazilian international full-back Marcelo on their books.

Boca trabajó pensando en el Final 2014

BUENOS AIRES -- En el regreso a las prácticas tras gozar de casi cuatro semanas de vacaciones, el plantel comandado por Carlos Bianchi realizó trabajos en La Bombonerita y luego saltó a la cancha del predio de Casa Amarilla a realizar ejercicios de velocidad.

Del entrenamiento participaron Hernán Grana (nuevo refuerzo), Nicolás Colazo (regresó de All Boys), y Nicolás Blandi (negocia su pase a San Lorenzo). Mientras tanto, no formaron parte Juan Román Riquelme y Leandro Paredes (lesionados) y Juan Forlín (no llegó la autorización por una diferencia de U$S 100.000 con Al Rayyad).

La llegada del defensor central no correría riesgo y las diferencias quedarán subsanadas en los próximos días. Igualmente, Hernán Grana no fue presentado ya que la idea de la dirigencia es que sean presentados juntos los dos refuerzos.

De esta manera, fueron 28 los futbolistas que participaron del primer entrenamiento de Carlos Bianchi, sin contar a Riquelme, Paredes y Forlín. Ellos fueron:

Cabe destacar que Pol Fernández, quien regresó de un préstamo de seis meses en Rosario Central, se entrenó con la reserva ya que no entra en la consideración de Carlos Bianchi. El volante podría seguir su carrera en Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata.

Boca finalizó el Torneo Inicial en la séptima posición, tras acumular 29 puntos y no poder sumar de a tres en las últimas cuatro fechas. El plantel de Carlos Bianchi tiene programados cuatro amistosos: uno ante Estudiantes (25 de enero) y tres ante River (18 de enero, 25 de enero y 1 de febrero)

De Felippe: "Si el plantel está al día ese es el mejor refuerzo"

BUENOS AIRES -- Con los graves problemas económicos a cuestas que obligan a solucionar algunos vínculos con los futbolistas, Independiente volvió al trabajo con el objetivo de volver este año a Primera División.
El entrenador Omar De Felippe dejó en claro que prefiere que el club le pague las deudas al plantel que sumar refuerzos.

"Todos sabemos los problemas que hay en el fútbol argentino, no solo en Independiente, así que si el plantel está al día ese es el mejor refuerzo", sostuvo De Felippe tras el entrenamiento en Villa Domínico.

Estuvo ausente en la práctica Julián Velázquez, cuyo contrato vence en junio próximo y aún no acordó la renovación.

De Felippe se encargó de aclarar que no estuvo "por un problema personal" y con aviso y dio seguridad que el sábado viajará a Mar del Plata, donde el domingo empezará a trabajar fuerte en la parte física.

En cuanto al volante Franco Razzotti se develará el sábado si viaja o no, en tanto el lateral uruguayo Cristian Pichón Núñez podría emigrar. El técnico le respondió que no le cortará la carrera.

Independiente jugará en Mar del Plata el clásico ante Racing y un partido con Newell´s y luego un triangular en Córdoba ante Belgrano y Rosario Central.

Pero además De Felippe resaltó que tendrá varios partidos con "equipos del Nacional B y de otros torneos".

En la web de Independiente se informó que en Mar del Plata jugará amistosos ante los equipos locales Aldosivi, Unión, y Kimberley, y San Carlos.

Ramón Díaz: "Mora se debe al club, no al entrenador"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de River, Ramón Díaz, advirtió en relación a la situación de Rodrigo Mora que "el jugador se debe al club y no al director técnico y es ciento por ciento de River, así que debe trabajar y entender que está en uno de los mejores clubes del mundo".

Al ser consultado sobre los dichos de Mora y la falta de "feeling" con el cuerpo técnico, el riojano opinó que fue más un tema del manager que no está en el día a día del trabajo, al tiempo que remarcó que "las cosas se demuestran en la cancha".

En cuanto a la posibilidad de que haya una oferta por el delantero uruguayo, Ramón Díaz dijo que "es el club el que debe decidir qué hacer, porque a mí no me compete. Nosotros estamos para planificar todo, para trabajar y para hacer que el equipo funcione".

Con respecto a la presencia de Fernando Cavenaghi en el equipo, Ramón señaló: "El equipo necesita goles y Fernando nos puede ayudar. Además, desde las primeras charlas con el presidente (Rodolfo D´Onofrio) que hablamos de él y la verdad es que cumplieron y eso es importante".

Ante la consulta sobre la presencia de Enzo Francescoli, el Pelado Díaz afirmó: "Respeto mucho la decisión de los dirigentes de sumarlo, conoce el club, conoce mucho cómo trabajamos y no habrá problemas porque todos queremos lo mejor para el club".

Por último, al hacer referencia al posible segundo refuerzo, el entrenador de River aseveró que confía en el plantel que tiene y negó que sea un enganche.

"Tengo jugadores importantes en ese puesto", sostuvo Ramón Díaz, quien se mostró dispuesto a entender las necesidades y prioridades económicas del club, tras la declaraciones de D´Onofrio en el sentido de que no realizará compras y que sólo incorporará a préstamo.

River: D´Onofrio destacó la actitud de Ramón y Cavenaghi

BUENOS AIRES -- El presidente de River Plate, Rodolfo D´Onofrio, reconoció en la presentación de Fernando Cavenaghi que tanto el delantero como el entrenador, Ramón Díaz, entendieron la situación que vive el club y por eso advirtió que "amerita que los hinchas sepan cuánto quieren esta camiseta".
Por otra parte, D´Onofrio aseguró en referencia al segundo refuerzo que el club no está en condiciones de comprar y si bien dijo "no nos retiramos del mercado", adelantó que van a tener que buscar una manera diferente de incorporar.

Al respecto, recalcó: "Lo importante era poder cerrar lo de Fernando para que arranque la pretemporada, luego para el segundo refuerzo vamos a ir analizando porque no depende de la economía de River, muy por lo contrario, depende de otros factores".

En cuanto a la venta de Maidana, no la descartó y explicó que si el club mexicano acredita los avales correspondientes la operación se puede hacer y adelantó: "Hasta que eso no suceda, Maidana es jugador de River".

Finalmente, en referencia a Rodrigo Mora, D´Onofrio relató: "Lo ví contento en el vestuario, con ganas de entrenarse y estar a disposición del director técnico. He leído muchas cosas, pero me encontré con un jugador muy contento y que es propiedad del club".
