Primera División kicks off with eight games, seven wins and 23 goalsDefending champion gets off to a winning start with a typical one nil victory while Unión La Calera races to early lead with four goal thrashing in first round of the Clausura 2014.The Clausura 2014 is in motion — the capricious machine that is Chile’s Primera División has been cranked for yet another year and the time for celebrating former glories is over.
O’Higgins’ 2013 Apertura triumph — the first in the club’s history — will live long in the supporter’s memory but it’s business as usual and manager Eduardo Berizzo will not be resting on his laurels. The Argentine will want to build on the club’s new-found success despite being linked with a move to Universidad Católica this coming June — following Martín Lasarte’s resignation just two days after losing the 2013 Apertura grand final to “La Celeste.”
Lasarte’s misfortune didn’t end there though — while he and Católica fans were licking their wounds Iquique salted the gashes by inflicting an unlikely Copa Libertadores playoff defeat. Changes have been enforced and “La U” suits have appointed Rodrigo Astudillo as manager for this term’s Clausura. His success in charge of both the club’s under 17 and 20 outfits puts him in good stead — many of the players he managed then have now broken into the first squad so he is familiar with the ammunition at his disposal. As always, expectations will be high.
Unión Española finished last season strongly, but after an ultimately disappointing title defence, the team will be looking forward to competing in the Copa Libertadores alongside O’Higgins and Universidad de Chile. Meanwhile Iquique will be planning for the Copa Sudamericana with three other undecided Chilean teams: namely the Copa Chile champions, the winner of the Clausura and the highest placed team on aggregate over the 2013-14 Primera División.
O’Higgins 1-0 Iquique“The idea is to start with a different team that ended the last season,” Berizzo told press before his team faced off against Iquique on Friday. “Tomorrow I will play young players who have not featured so much in the past.”
True to Berizzo’s word, only César Fuentes remained from the side that defeated Católica to win last year’s title. Iquique manager Jaime Vera was not going to take the game lightly though.
“We will try to win the game but O’Higgins will be a difficult rival,” he said.
O’Higgins began this term as the team ended the last — with a victory. However, with the reigning champions only returning to training on Thursday it seemed many players were still working off their Christmas lunches when Iquique striker Gerson Martínez wasted the game’s opening chance.
O’Higgins turned on the style as the game wore on and began carving out goal scoring chances — albeit without success. The introduction of midfielder Roberto Órdenes changed the dynamic of the game and four minutes after coming on defender Benjamín Vidal scored a brilliant header on 76 minutes.
Iquique failed to test Roberto González in goal, unable to break down O’Higgins’ disciplined defense. The home fans will be accustomed to winning by a solitary goal — it is no strange thing for O’Higgins to shut up shop after going a goal ahead, the Apertura just gone witnessed numerous one nil victories for the “La Celeste.”
Rangers 0-1 Universidad de ChileNo more than two weeks after Universidad de Chile thumped Iquique in the Copa Libertadores playoff final, the team triumphed once again on Saturday, this time against Rangers courtesy of a single Patricio Rubio strike just after the hour mark.
Argentina international Matías Caruzzo was the only player brought in to bolster Universidad de Chile during the Christmas break, Marco Figueroa confident his team possesses the necessary firepower to cause damage in both the league and Copa Libertadores.
The away side hit the cross bar in the first half on Saturday when Ramón Fernández unleashed a shot — while Rangers was toothless in attack. “La Fantasma’s” side, having not lost in eight Primera División, will be hard to break down this season and are surely among the favorites to top the table in a few months time.
Santiago Wanderers 4-2 HuachipatoFormer Chile international Mario Salas steered Huachipato to defeat in his first game in charge — falling foul of Santiago Wanderers at Estadio Bicentenario Lucio Fariña on Friday.
The visiting team began well, combining passes and playing with an intensity not reminiscent of the team that failed so miserably last term. Regardless, Wanderers opened the scoring with forward Gastón Cellerino netting the first of his brace on 19 minutes.
Huachipato replied almost instantly, striker David Llanos writing his name of the score sheet three minutes later. In a frantic quarter of an hour the score swelled — midfielder Leandro Valencia scoring in the 26th, Cellerino grabbing his second six minutes later. Lucas Simón did well to reply for “Los Acereros” on 39 minutes but it was not enough.
Four minutes from time Valencia stole his second with a free kick and all three points. Huachipato fans will be encouraged though — if their team shows similar spirit throughout the season the rewards will surely come.
Ñublense 1-2 Universidad CatólicaAstudillo’s maiden game in charge brought victory as Católica forgot about the end of last year to beat Ñublense at Estadio Bicentenario Municipal Nelson on Sunday.
Católica dominated throughout and defender Enzo Andía put “Los Cruzados” in front on six minutes before substitute defender Marko Biskupović doubled the lead shortly before the half-hour mark.
Striker Sebastián Varas slotted home a penalty for the home side in the 50th minute but it was not enough to avoid defeat.
Cobresal 1-5 Unión La CaleraUnión La Calera shot to the top of the table with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Cobresal. Striker Leandro Benegas bagged four goals — midfielder Juan Gómez chipped in to make it five.
Home defender Rodrigo Ramírez pulled one back in the 78th minutes after coming on as a substitute but it is back to the drawing board for José Cantillana’s side after such a humbling defeat.
Colo Colo 2-1 Audax ItalianoHéctor Tapia’s Colo Colo side got the season of to a fine start by overcoming Audax Italiano on Sunday. The home team dominated during the opening exchanges but was unable to find a clinical finish.
Surprisingly Audax drew first blood — defender Bryan Carrasco rifling a shot past Justo Villa in goal on 29 minutes.
The second half was a different story though, as Colo Colo pulled back two goals. The first came in the 66th minutes thanks to defender Gonzalo Fierro but the 20,000 strong home support were made to wait until stoppage time for Felipe Flores to guarantee the three points.
Antofagasta 1-1 Unión EspañolaAntofagasta and Unión Española grinded out the only draw of the first round — ending the match all square with one goal each on Saturday.
Striker Carlos Salom got himself on the score sheet on 29 minutes before his counterpart, forward Juan Lorca cancelled out his effort just before half time.
Universidad de Concepción 1-0 CobreloaIn an uneventful game — defined by one red card a piece — substitute striker Leonardo Monje sealed the win with a strike on 72 minutes.
Both teams will be hoping for more success after struggling last season.
