Jamaica to meet France in pre-WC friendly
MIAMI --- Jamaica has set a friendly international date with European powerhouse France on June 8 in Lille, France, it was announced Tuesday.
"Securing this game is the result of months of negotiations between ourselves and our French counterparts," said Captain Horace Burrell, President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), in regard to pinning down the game with the former FIFA World Cup champion.
The CONCACAF Vice-President added that this high-profile match, to be played at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, will be vital in rebuilding the Reggae Boyz as a brand. It will also be key in preparing the team for its 2018 World Cup Qualifying journey.
"This game is going to be critical on a number of fronts,” Burrell outlined. “One, it will play a major role in rebuilding the team, and also it forms a part of my stated commitment to arrange as many international games as possible as we look to Russia.”
Incidentally, Jamaica´s senior football team´s only appearance at a World Cup Finals took place back in France in 1998, when it became the first English-speaking Caribbean nation to achieve the elusive feat.
Both countries are expected to field their strongest possible teams as the encounter will be France´s final warm-up before departing for the World Cup in Brazil.
The French are currently ranked 20th by FIFA, while Jamaica sits at 80th position.
