Haunted Universidad de Chile axes “Fantasma” Figueroa
Universidad de Chile has sacked controversial manager Marco Antonio Figueroa after their stuttering start to the new season.
Santiago — The Azules won their opening game of the season 1-0 over host, the Rangers, to hint at better things to come, but then it all turned sour.
Perhaps the turning point was a bizarre press conference “Fantasma” Figueroa gave last Thursday when he criticized everyone under the sun, including the Azules’ board of directors, referees, and even the club’s new signing, Matías Caruzzo (“Even Echeverría (juvenile) is better than Matías Caruzzo”).
If that outburst went down like a lead balloon with the board and players, the results in the following week hardly helped Figueroa’s son’s cause either.
A 1-0 loss to Palestino on Friday night was followed by a humbling 2-1 defeat at struggling Cobresal on Tuesday afternoon.
With talk of dressing room unrest and the directors fast losing patience, that defeat in the desert proved the final straw and the 51-year-old was dismissed after a board meeting on Wednesday.
Ex-Universidad Católica and Cobreloa boss Figueroa had taken charge last July following la U´s decision to dispense with the services of Dario Franco.
But the outspoken manager was, like Franco, unable to turn Universidad de Chile into the sort of force that current Chile boss Jorge Sampaoli achieved in his time at the helm.
Despite having an excellent squad, la U could only finish a disappointing fourth in the Apertura, though they did win the end of season Liguilla to book Copa Libertadores football this year.
In fact, the Azules face a two-game set against Paraguayans Guaraní at the end of January and start of February to see if they can earn a place in the Libertadores group stage.
And with their next match not until January 26 against Ñublense, the directors have time to think about who should take the reins.
Meanwhile, the much-travelled Figueroa will have to seek another new club after squandering his big opportunity at Universidad de Chile.
