MAR DEL PLATA -- A River Plate le faltó convicción para aprovechar el futbolista de más que tuvo durante casi la totalidad del segundo tiempo y por eso terminó 1-1 el primer Superclásico del año, que en la ocasión se desarrolló en un repleto Estadio José María Minella.

Juan Sánchez Miño con un tiro libre exquisito puso en ventaja a Boca Juniors, a los 19 minutos del primer período. El zurdo mediocampista se puso de costado y le pegó a la pelota con tanta exactitud que la colocó por encima de la barrera arriba y a la izquierda del arco de Marcelo Barovero.
A tres minutos de marcharse hacia el descenso, Jonatan Maidana igualó para los Millonarios, al puntearle el esférico a Agustín Orion, tras una serie de rebotes.

Ya en tiempo adicionado de la primera mitad, fue expulsado el duro zaguero xeneize Daniel Díaz, a quien Germán Delfino le sacó tarjeta roja directa por un exceso verbal.

El juego concluyó con diez futbolistas por cada lado, pero al capitán de los Millonarios, Fernando Cavenaghi, lo echaron por agredir a un adversario recién sobre el epílogo del clásico.

Con este resultado en el choque de colosos, fue Estudiantes de La Plata el que conquistó la Copa de Oro. El primer capítulo arrancó de manera muy intenesa porque los dos equipos querían demostrar que estaban para ganar el partido.

Si bien los primeros minutos se jugaron en el campo de Boca, los dirigidos por Carlos Bianchi, basándose en una interesante actuación del juvenil debutante Luciano Acosta, recuperaron el balón para comenzar a inquietar a Barovero.

A los 15, el guardavalla riverplatense, después de un centro de Acosta y un cabezazo de Emmanuel Gigliotti que se desvió en Ramiro Funes Mori, tuvo que meter un manotazo salvador cuando parecía que estaba vencido y además acechaba Juan Manuel Martínez.

Con Boca como dominador llegó el tiro libre que le permitió abrir el marcador a Sánchez Miño. Después de una falta de Maidana sin pelota en perjuicio de Gigliotti, el zurdo la clavó en el ángulo izquierdo de Barovero, quien a pesar de la estirada no logró llegar a su objetivo.

A partir de entonces fue todo para River. El colombiano Carlos Carbonero por derecha y Leonel Vangioni por izquierda supieron resolver el esquema que le proponía Boca, un 4-2-3-1.

A los 25 llegó el primer Cavegol en las bocas de la gente millonaria luego de que el 9 conectara un centro de Leonardo Ponzio que se fue acariciando el palo derecho de Orion.

Boca se quedó sólo en algunos intentos y River de la mano de Cristian Ledesma volvió a manejar la mitad de la cancha y acorralaba a los de Bianchi que carecían de salidas claras para evitar el asedio.

En los cinco minutos finales River se lo llevó puesto a Boca y a los 42 Manuel Lanzini y Vangioni jugaron intencionalmente corto un córner que tuvo un mal rechazo de Gigliotti y Maidana, con lo que le quedaba frente a Orion, se anticipó al guardameta del seleccionado argentino en una acción confusa y la pelota entró mansamente junto al palo izquierdo para darle forma al 1-1.

La clara imagen de que River fue más se dio sobre el final del primer segmento con la expulsión del catamarqueño Díaz, quien por una protesta excesiva al árbiro Delfino recibió la tarjeta roja.

En la segunda parte, el elenco del riojano Díaz careció de convicción para aprovechar el hombre de más y favoreció el rearmado defensivo de los auriazules, que afrontaron la etapa con el ingreso del zaguero Joel Rodríguez y la salida forzada del creativo Acosta.

A pesar de todo, hubo un taco inteligente, sorpresivo y efectivo de Teo Gutiérrez dentro del área que permitió un remate de Cavenaghi desde excelente posición, pero el disparo del capitán dio en la base externa de la red.

Boca también pudo haberse colocado otra vez arriba en el tanteador cuando Fernando Gago presionó a Funes Mori, la pelota dio en su cuerpo del mediocampista internacional y salió directamente despedida hacia el arco de Barovero, pero Trapito reaccionó y otorgó un córner.

En los minutos finales River mejoró un poco su nivel y dispuso de dos escenas como para imponerse, pero la chilena de Lanzini fue atajada por Emanuel Trípodi, quien reemplazó al lesioando Orion, y un disparo de Carbonero pasó muy cerca del ángulo superior izquierdo de la portería del ex Quilmes.

En definitiva, River no supo doblegar a un ordenado Boca, que en el balance dejó una imagen más convincente.

Ángel Correa no irá a España con la Selección Sub 20

BUENOS AIRES -- El técnico del seleccionado argentino Sub 20, Humberto Grondona, confirmó el sábado que Ángel Correa, atacante de San Lorenzo,

"deberá presentarse al predio de Ezeiza a entrenar, pero no jugará la Copa del Atlántico".

En declaraciones al programa radial "Equipo Desafío", el entrenador del representativo albiceleste remarcó: "No voy a sacar a un jugador de un club, a Correa lo tengo que convocar, pero no irá al torneo".

La Copa del Atlántico se disputará entre los días 3 y 8 de febrero en las Islas Canarias e intervendrán los seleccionados de España, Estados Unidos y un combinado canario.

Por otra parte, el plantel de San Lorenzo realizó la última práctica de la pretemporada en el Hotel Sofitel La Reserva Los Cardales.

En turno matutino, el equipo dirigido por Edgardo Bauza, realizó trabajos con pelota y disputó 70 minutos de fútbol, dividido en dos tiempos de 35.

El delantero juvenil Correa no participó del entrenamiento por un problema personal, pero se reintegraría el lunes.

La formación titular se impuso a la suplente, por 1-0, con gol de Ignacio Piatti.

MONUMENTAL RIVALRY

Summer is a hellish time to be in Buenos Aires. First, because the temperatures are enough to wilt even the strongest constitution – I type this whilst sitting in the living room in my pants, with the air conditioning on, and thanks to the 40 degrees Celsius outside, I´m still sweating. But for the football fan, there´s a more prosaic reason: from mid-December until early February, the Argentine league shuts down, and with clubs relocating to coastal resorts or holiday towns far from the capital to undergo ´pre-season´ (I use inverted commas because technically, we´re actually halfway through the season), there´s no competitive football to enjoy.

Still, this is Argentina. And so it is that, amongst the phalanx of meaningless kickabouts involving the likes of Argentinos Juniors against a Uruguayan second division side playing two halves of 35 minutes each way in front of a crowd of ten people, we also have some equally meaningless – but far more famous – fixtures. Saturday night will bring the first of three (three!) pre-season friendlies between River Plate and Boca Juniors.

These friendlies mean nothing – even the players, interviewed in the days ahead of the game, admit to TV and print journalists that, ´the first match of the new championship is the most important.´ But people all over Argentina will be watching, because the superclásico is... well, it´s the superclásico.

Such interest is generated that companies dealing in getting tourists into matches in Argentina even have superclásico ticket and transport packages available from Buenos Aires to the coastal resort of Mar Del Plata where the game is being played. And it´s unlikely to be an entirely friendly encounter, either on the pitch or in the stands. But the real meat and veg of the super is the league rivalry.

I´m going to make myself feel very old now: I started watching Argentine football over a decade ago, and took my first tentative steps in writing about it almost seven-and-a-half years ago. In April 2010, I moved to Buenos Aires. I´d been to a few River Plate games before whilst on holiday in Argentina, including one summer clásico (not superclásico!) against Racing, in the same Mar Del Plata stadium that will host this weekend´s game. After moving to BA, I was able to venture to new stadia.

I braved the touts and saw Juan Román Riquelme set up Martín Palermo as Boca beat rivals San Lorenzo in La Bombonera. I saw Independiente´s shell of a new ground, construction halted when the money from Sergio Agüero´s transfer to Atlético Madrid proved less than enough to pay for it due to spiralling inflation and, it´s hard not to suspect, corrupt club officials (construction has since restarted thanks to Agüero´s subsequent move to Manchester City giving Independiente a FIFA development fee for the player as part of the transfer).

I saw the legendary atmosphere at Racing´s colossal ground, went to smaller grounds like those of All Boys and second division sleeping giants Ferro Carril Oeste, and in two astonishing weekends I saw Argentinos Juniors first come from 3-2 down in the 90th minute to win 4-3 at home to Independiente (oh, and met Diego Maradona´s brother Hugo on the way into the stadium), and then saw them claim the title with victory in Huracán´s giant, fading palace of stadium a week later. In July 2011, I spent three weeks covering the Copa América, held in Argentina but won by Uruguay. I´ve also been lucky enough to have attended so many Argentina friendlies and World Cup qualifiers in the last few years that I´ve now lost count (though I could have a look through all the tickets, if you really want to know).

And yet... and yet. Something was missing. Last year, my friends at LandingPadBA, a website specialising in all things Buenos Aires-related and touristy, and most of all in Argentine football tickets and tours heard that in three-and-a-half football-filled years in the city, I´d never been able to attend a superclásico. This, I was told, had to change. I´m a journalist writing about Argentine football, and they just wouldn´t stand for me not having been to the biggest game of the lot.

So it was that the last time River and Boca met, I was finally there. The afternoon had begun with meeting my brother, who was visiting Buenos Aires, at a friend´s house, from where we walked slowly – and with a stop for lunch – the fiveish miles to River Plate´s Monumental stadium, the largest in Argentina.

The superclásico is full of clichés, but I can´t avoid reporting that there were signs of the coming match all along our walk, from River fans going past hanging out of buses several kilometres from the ground, to the banners promoting River presidential candidates along Avenida Guillermo Udaondo, which forms the final few hundred metres of the walk to the ground. Listen carefully, and tilt your head in the right direction, and the sound of distant police helicopters was also audible. Although away fans are banned in Argentina at present – a response against violence in the stadium that is at one and the same time far too much, and nowhere near enough – some Boca fans and almost their whole barra brava were accompanying their team´s coach from their hotel in the south of the city (just a few hundred metres from my flat, coincidentally) to as close to the stadium as police would allow them to get.

We arrived an hour and a half or so before kick off, and Avenida Udaondo was already heaving with people. After running the gamut of police checks – my friend at LandingPad had sorted us out with only match tickets, since I already knew what I was doing when it came to getting into the stadium, but for temporary visitors, minibus transfers and guides are also available – we eventually got into the stadium, along with another chap who a security guard allowed in on my ticket because, as I overheard him telling his colleague, ´the barra [Argentina´s answer to Italy´s ultra, and even more dangerous] have told us to let this one in.´

When we reached the stand, around an hour before the game, it was already packed, and the stadium was already resounding with chanting, at times rising to a level so loud that from outside the ground, it must have been hard to believe the game wasn´t already in full pelt. Minutes before kick off, a police helicopter flew all round the stadium, so close that from our seats in the second-to-last row of the upper tier, it almost seemed would could reach out and touch it. As Boca´s team took to the pitch, whistles rose to a deafening crescendo. When, after letting their rivals stew in hatred for a few minutes, River´s players ran out, the noise was incredible. As the sides lined up to kick off, the helicopter hovered over the centre circle, slowly lowering itself down right inside the stadium, so low that we could see the top of it, before suddenly lifting up and flying off towards the horizon.

And then the game started. The actual football almost feels like a secondary attraction where the superclásico is concerned; the pressure on both sides rarely leads to much of a spectacle, and in the last few years it´s been very rare that either team – never mind both – have had much in the way of form going into the match. During the 2013 Torneo Inicial, things were a little different; although both sides would later slide away and end the championship in disappointingly low positions, Boca were unbeaten in three and River in four coming into the game, and the consensus with friends I spoke to afterwards – River fans and neutrals, some who´d been at the game and some who´d watched on TV – was that it was a better match than the last few supers had been.

Boca won, Emanuel Gigliotti´s goal halfway through the first half proving to be the only goal of a game that was otherwise dominated by River (though Boca did hit the woodwork early in the second half). River´s many problems in attack – where they spent most of the championship creating plenty of chances and finishing almost none of them – were almost cancelled out by a very impressive defence, and I´d written before the game for The Bubble that for Boca to win, Gigliotti was going to have to make the very most of the few chances (if any) he´d be allowed, and so it proved.

The match might have been at River´s cavernous, running-track-sporting stadium, rather than Boca´s closer-to-the-pitch and more iconic Bombonera, and there might not have been any away fans in attendance (apart, perhaps, from a brave few who´d got hold of tickets and sat on their hands throughout the game), but the atmosphere was incredible even so, and I´d finally experienced River Plate versus Boca Juniors for myself. At long last, I´d truly arrived in Buenos Aires.

Saturday: Big win for America over Leon PLUS ALL THE OTHER ACTION

The earlier kickoff on Saturday was a replay of the Torneo Apertura Final just a month after Leon were crowned champions and yesterday’s clash in the Azteca against Club America proved equally tight. With little between the sides it took a controversial second half penalty to give America revenge over their foes. Centre Forward, Raul Jimenez was clipped just outside the box but referee, Paul Delgadillo pointed to the spot and Jimenez got up to slot the penalty past William Yarbrough. Leon will feel even more aggrieved after a strong penalty claim of their own was dismissed in the first half when Carlos ‘Gullit’ Peña was bundled over. Regardless, after the disappointment of defeat to Tijuana this was a big win for America and new coach, Antonio Mohamed and the belief will quickly return.

Chivas maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-1 draw in Veracruz. The improvement in José Luis Real’s side and the sending off of Veracruz’s Cristian Llama with half an hour to go mean that Los Rojiblancos will look at this as a missed opportunity. Israel Castro gave Chivas the lead with a superbly struck volley after 20 minutes but with Marco Fabian missing Chivas lacked sufficient incision to push on. Jehu Chiapas fired Veracruz level in the second half but within minutes Llama was given his marching orders for a poor tackle. Chivas were unable to take advantage of this advantage but there are still signs of promise for the Guadalajara giants.

At the other end of the table there were big wins for some of the strugglers. Monterrey roared back from falling behind against Queretaro to win 3-1, their first of the season. William Da Silva got behind the Rayados defence after half an hour and rifled a left footed finish past Jonathan Orozco to put Queretaro in front. However, a fine second half performance turned the game on its head. Minutes after the break, Victor Ramos headed the equaliser and after 63 minutes, Marlon de Jesus steadied himself after receiving a cross from the right and thumped Monterrey in front. With full time approaching, the 3 points was ensured when Edgar Hernández spilled a shot allowing Cesar Delgado to tap in the third.

Pachuca also came from behind to earn a valuable victory against Tijuana. Cristian Pellerano’s superb long range strike gave Xolos the early lead but they lacked the same bite that had against America a week earlier. Instead, Pachuca fought back to earn a first home win for 5 months. Edgar Andrade’s deep cross was not dealt with and allowed Ecuadorian striker, Enner Valencia to nip in and head the equaliser. The winner came from a similar source when a ball over the top released Valencia and after rounding the keeper his scuffed effort was trickling over the goalline until Hernán Pellerano’s hand stopped the ball. Despite their protests there was no other decision to be made and Walter Ayovi stepped up to slot in the decisive penalty.

Atlante managed to close the gap with Atlas in their bottom of the table clash with a narrow 1-0 win. With not a lot between these two poor sides it took only Narciso Mina’s neat finish to give Atlante a much needed win.

Finally, Cruz Azul continued their fine start to the championship winning 1-0 in Chiapas. These two sides couldn’t have had more distinct starts to the season, with Cruz Azul unbeaten and top of the table and Chiapas without a win. The match winner came after 27 minutes when Mauro Pavone’s header from a corner was pounced on by fellow Argentine, Mauro Formica and he diverted the ball from close range past Jesus Corona.

Bianchi: "Lo hicimos muy bien"

MAR DEL PLATA -- El entrenador de Boca Juniors, Carlos Bianchi, elogió la tarea de sus jugadores en el primer clásico, tanto por el buen "arranque" del partido como por haber mantenido la igualdad jugando con un hombre menos todo el segundo tiempo.

Bianchi cuestionó al árbitro Germán Delfino por no cobrar infracción de Jonatan Maidana a Agustín Orión en el gol de River y argumentó que si la hubiera cobrado Daniel "Cata" Díaz no hubiese sido expulsado por protestar.

"Fue un partido en el que no hubo grandes superioridades pero nosotros los hicimos muy bien, sobre todo en el arranque del encuentro", evaluó el técnico en un tono relajado y optimista por haber visto al equipo con su nuevo esquema 4-2-3-1 aunque solo pudo ejercitarlo en el primer tiempo.

Bianchi explicó que "arrancamos mejor, manejamos la pelota y tuvimos situaciones, pero después del gol nuestro tuvimos algunas distracciones".

"Creo que la jugada del gol de River fue clave" confió el Virrey y agregó "yo no la vi pero por las marcas que nos mostró Agustín - por Orión - fue una clara falta que debió haber sido sancionada".

"Los jugadores quedaron muy nerviosos después del gol de ellos y llegó la expulsión de Daniel Díaz, que tal vez si Delfino hubiese sancionado la falta en área no estaríamos hablando de esto" sentenció.

Bianchi aclaró que después de la roja que le mostraron al "Cata" "estas obligado a achicar los espacios". "Cuando te quedás con un jugador menos los que quedan en cancha tienen que dar un plus para reemplazar a su compañero que no está y dejarle pocos espacios al rival. Hoy lo logramos otras veces es más difícil".

Para el entrenador fue muy interesante en debut de Luciano Acosta que se transformó en uno de los mejores de los primeros 45 pero que fue el elegido para dejar el campo de juego para que Boca pudiera volver a armar la zaga central luego de la expulsión. "Son cosas del fútbol" se sinceró el DT y dijo "Acosta hizo un gran partido, no le pesó el debut pero era el que tenía que salir para que ingrese Joel Rodríguez, necesitábamos achicar los espacios y hacer un equipo más compacto".

"Logramos que River no nos superara a pesar de que jugaron con un hombre de mas casi 50 minutos del partido. Me voy conforme con lo que pudimos hacer" aseguró el Virrey.

En la continuidad de la puesta a punto y el trabajo de pretemporada los dirigidos por Bianchi tendrán que volver a enfrentar a River en dos oportunidades: el 25 de enero en Córdoba y el 1 de febrero en Mendoza.

El DT ya aclaró que su idea de poner a los titulares para todos los encuentros que quedan ya no se podrá plasmar.

"Díaz está expulsado y a Agustín Orion lo vamos a cuidar, porque nuestra prioridad sigue siendo el arranque del campeonato", resaltó.

Bianchi confirmó que buscará un tercer refuerzo por la lesión de Joel Acosta y dijo que se va a !"tomar el tiempo justo para esa incorporación en caso de que se dé".

"Ese jugador que venga nos tiene que aportar lo que no tenemos por eso hay que pensarlo bien", cerró.

El mediocampista de Boca Juniors Fernando Gago destacó los primeros treinta minutos que jugó su equipo en el empate 1-1 frente a River Plate, en el Estadio José María Minella.

"Mucho no se puede analizar el partido, pero jugamos treinta minutos muy buenos en el primer tiempo, con buen juego, agresividad y presión", sostuvo el volante del seleccionado argentino.

Y argumentó: "Con un hombre de menos nos tuvimos que proteger un poco más, pero nunca perdimos el orden y River no nos generó peligro en el segundo tiempo".

"Yo quiero ganar siempre y ahora ya hay que pensar en el próximo partido (el Superclásico del sábado 25 de enero en Córdoba) para empezar bien el campeonato", remarcó el mediocampista.
