Ramón Díaz dijo que vio "un progreso enorme" en River

MAR DEL PLATA -- El entrenador de River, Ramón Díaz dijo haber visto "un progreso enorme" en el juego de sus dirigidos en el primer superclásico del año ante Boca pese a haberse conformado con un empate jugando con un hombre de más en todo el segundo tiempo.

"Fue un partido muy intenso en donde pusimos actitud, ganas y fuimos a buscar el encuentro bien arriba. Vamos a seguir creciendo", auguró Ramón.

Aseguró que le "gustó mucho" el nuevo esquema que probó para este año (3-4-1-2) "y como lo trabajaron los chicos aunque no estuvimos precisos".

"Ellos dominaron los primero 15 minutos del juego y después no pudimos ganarlo pero me voy conforme" dijo el entrenador, sin detenerse en ese detalle fundamental que abrió la expulsión de Daniel "Cata" Díaz sobre el epílogo del primer tiempo. Es que en 50 minutos con un hombre de ventaja apenas si creó un par de situaciones de gol.

Justificó que "es algo propio de este tiempo de pretemporada con mucha intensidad de trabajo, es normal pero así y todo tuvimos la jugada de la chilena de Lanzini y una más de Carbonero que nos podrían haber dado el triunfo".

"Sabíamos que Boca se agrupa bien atrás pero me voy conforme. En el poco tiempo que llevamos vimos un progreso enorme", agregó el entrenador.

Resaltó la actuación de Cavenaghi al margen de la expulsión del final.

"Tuvo dos situaciones claras y me voy muy feliz con su tarea", señaló.

Ramón confirmó que afrontará el superclásico en Córdoba con los titulares, aunque no podrá contar con el suspendido Cavenaghi.

Ya en el final, Ramón volvió marcar la diferencia que el siente que hay en el club con la llegada de la nueva dirigencia.

"En este corto tiempo de trabajo entre dirigentes, jugadores y cuerpo técnico estamos recuperando la imagen de River. Están cambiando muchas cosas en el club y eso nos permite trabajar a cada uno en los suyo" concluyó.

Honours even in the first summer Superclásico

It may only be a summer preseason tournament but a clash between Argentina’s biggest rivals is always an event and last night’s Superclásico in Mar Del Plata was no different. It may have been played some five hours away from Buenos Aires but it was an opportunity for both sets of fans to pack out the Estadio José María Minella and earn the first bragging rights of 2014. What transpired was a typically fiery encounter ending with 2 red cards and a 1-1 draw. There is still plenty for both sides to work on before the second Superclásico next week in Cordoba and more importantly the Torneo Final.

At this early stage both managers will take positives from their performances but there is still significant work to do. Bianchi’s Boca started well despite the absence of talisman, Juan Roman Riquelme and Bianchi will be angered by the late first half goal conceded and Daniel ‘Cata’ Diaz’s subsequent sending off. River grew into the game and perhaps were more of a goal threat with Fernando Cavanaghi back in the attack than last season’s toothless side but Ramon Diaz will not have been pleased by his veteran strikers petulant sending off late in the game.

Boca’s 4-2-3-1 formation controlled the midfield and pressed River Plate into mistakes and loose possession. Pablo Ledesma and Fernando Gago sat in front of a new look back four, encorporating new signings, Hernan Grana and Juan Forlin and this solid base allowed the creative trio of Juan Manuel Martinez, Luciano Acosta and Juan Sánchez Miño to support lone striker, Emmanuel Gigliotti.

This formation dictated the early proceedings and created a good chance for Gigliotti prior to Sánchez Miño breaking the deadlock. Continuously linked with a move away from La Bombonera it was Sánchez Miño’s trademark left foot that expertly dispatched a free kick from 25 yards out. Curling over the wall and against the inside of the post, even the scrambling Marcelo Barovero could not keep it out.

However, River reacted well and pushed Boca back. Chances fell to Colombian, Carlos Carbonero and Cavanaghi but neither could force the equaliser. Instead it was the unlikely source of Jonatan Maidana that grabbed the goal. A short corner caused confusion in the Boca penalty box and in the melee, Maidana slid in to divert the ball past Agustin Orion and in the process catch the goalkeeper where no one wants to be caught.

Boca fumed feeling that this was a foul on Orion but the goal stood. Sadly for Boca, experienced centre half, Daniel Diaz couldn’t let this go and eventually talked himself into an early bath.

Boca reacted to this by sacrificing the impressive Acosta at the break in place of Joel Rodriguez, a change which seemed to stifle River’s hopes of making their numerical advantage count.

Both sides managed to create chances but neither could find a winner and with time running out Fernando Cavanaghi lashed out at Fernando Gago off the ball and was shown a straight red card. Deep into injury time it had no impact on the game but was a moment of stupidity from a player who has plenty of Superclásico experience to know better.

Both sides now move on to next weeks replay in Cordoba before the third and final match in Mendoza. The Superclásico is always an engrossing event but both sides will be looking for improvements if this fixture is to have a bearing on the championship in some months time.

Liga MX Wrap: America gain revenge, Toluca sit top

America capitalised on a controversial penalty call to beat Leon 1-0 and gain a measure of revenge for last month´s Apertura final defeat.

Leon were 5-1 winners over two legs when the two sides last met in December´s end-of-season showdown, but America drew first blood in the Clausura campaign on Saturday.

Raul Jimenez was the beneficiary of referee Paul Delgadillo´s decision to award a spot-kick after 67 minutes of Sunday´s Liga MX clash, even though the striker looked to be outside the box when Nacho Gonzalez made his challenge

Furthermore, the tackle appeared to be a fair one, but Jimenez put that doubt to one side as he stepped up to stroke home what proved to be the winning goal from the spot.

Venezuela Primera Division Wrap: Top three stay perfect

Deportivo Tachira, Tucanes and Aragua remain the only Venezuela Primera Division teams with a 100 per cent record after matchday two.

It took two late goals for Deportivo Tachira to overcome Yaracuyanos 4-2 to the delight of their home fans.

Jose Meza and Yoandri Orozco twice put Tachira into the lead before the goals were cancelled out with Yaracuyanos´ Eduard Bello levelling just before half-time and Luis Randazzo tying the scores in the 88th minute.

But Tachira were not to be denied as Angel Osorio secured the go-ahead goal on 91 minutes before Orozco completed his brace two minutes later.

Juan Garcia scored the only goal as Tucanes won 1-0 on the road against Atletico El Vigia.

Because of their 4-0 win over Atletico Venezuela on matchday one, Tucanes retain first position on the standings with a superior goal difference.

Costa Rica Primera Division Wrap: Herediano claim big win

Herediano retained leadership of the Costa Rica Primera Division with a comfortable 4-1 road trip win at Belen Siglo XXI.

Esteban Granados and Victor Nunez put Herediano 2-0 up after only 15 minutes as the away side dominated the early exchanges.

Belen Siglo tried to work their way back into the match but Jose Cancela´s second-half brace sealed the three points for Herediano.

Bryan Vega did get a consolation goal for the home side with six minutes to play.

Alajuelense missed an opportunity to go level with Herediano, as they went down 1-0 at Uruguay.

A spot-kick from Uruguay´s Johan Condega on the stroke of half-time was enough to seal their first win of the campaign.

Paulo Jimenez´s brace saw Cartagines jump to second position with a 3-1 triumph at Limon.

Jimenez scored either side of Steven Calderon´s equaliser for Limon with Cartagines´ Leandro Silva sealing the three points on 70 minutes.

The Guabira faithful were sent into raptures as Diego Cabrera completed the comeback in the 90th minute.

River Plate y San Lorenzo vuelven a trabajar en Buenos Aires

BUENOS AIRES -- River y San Lorenzo volverán a trabajar desde el lunes en Buenos Aires, tras dejar atrás la parte fuerte de preparación física que hicieron en Tandil y Campana.

River regresó este lunes por la mañana desde Mar del Plata tras el clásico ante Boca y luego de hacer pretemporada en Tandil.

Si bien el entrenador Ramón Díaz tenía programado darle dos días de descanso al plantel, decidió darle uno y citar al plantel para mañana a las 18 en el predio de la AFA en Ezeiza.

El cambio habría sido por el rendimiento del equipo en el 1-1 ante Boca, que jugó 50 minutos con un hombre menos.

River volverá a jugar con Boca el sábado próximo en Córdoba y el 28 con San Lorenzo en Salta. El sábado primero será el tercer superclásico en Mendoza y el 4 de febrero se enfrentará al seleccionado de San Luis.

Por su parte, San Lorenzo dejó el sábado el Sofitel La Reserva Cardales, en Campana, y el lunes desde las 8 seguirá la pretemporada en la Ciudad Deportiva.

Con Nicolás Blandi como único refuerzo confirmado y con el defensor Carlos Valdez como candidato firme a sumarse al plantel de Edgardo Bauza, San Lorenzo hará desde esta semana un periplo con tres escalas: el miércoles 22 enfrentará a San Martín en San Juan, el sábado se medirá con Santamarina en Tandil, y el 28 ante River en Salta.

El argentino Gabriel Calderón es el nuevo entrenador de Betis

SEVILLA -- Real Betis, colista de la liga española de Primera División, ha hecho oficial la contratación del argentino Gabriel Humberto Calderón como nuevo entrenador del primer equipo en sustitución del destituido Juan Carlos Garrido.

Calderón, nacido el 7 de febrero de 1960 en Rawson y que fue jugador del Real Betis entre 1983 y 1987, ha firmado ya su contrato con el club sevillano por lo que queda de temporada y la siguiente en caso de lograr la permanencia, según informa el club.

Se pondrá mañana mismo al mando del equipo e incluso ya ha programado una doble sesión para comenzar a preparar el próximo partido de Liga, contra el Celta.

El excentrocampista argentino ha desarrollado su carrera como entrenador casi íntegramente en países del Oriente Próximo.

Comenzó en el Caen francés y luego pasó por el Lausana suizo, las selecciones nacionales de Arabia Saudí -a la que clasificó para el Mundial de Alemania 2006-, Omán y Baréin y los clubes saudíes Al Ittihad - con el que fue campeón de Liga en 2009 y finalista de la Copa de Asia- y Al Hilal -campeón de Liga y Copa en 2012-, y el Baniyas emiratí, con el que llegó a la final de Copa.

Como jugador militó en El Porvenir, Racing, Lanús e Independiente de su país, el París Saint Germain francés y Sion suizo, y formó parte de la selección argentina que ganó el Mundial juvenil de 1979 y participó con la absoluta en los Mundiales de España´82 e Italia´90.

Calderón es el tercer entrenador del Betis en la presente temporada, ya que sustituye a Juan Carlos Garrido, destituido esta tarde, quien a su vez había reemplazado a Pepe Mel el pasado 3 de diciembre.

La misión de Calderón, quien siempre se ha sentido muy identificado con el Betis, donde dejó muy buenos recuerdos entre la afición, es la que intentar salvar al equipo del descenso, situación complicada al estar colista con once puntos, a nueve de los puestos de permanencia cuando ya se ha disputado el primer partido de la primera vuelta.

En declaraciones que difunde el Betis, Calderón afirma: (entrenar el Betis) "es el sueño que siempre tuve". "No lo tenía plasmado en una fecha determinada pero cuando surge una situación delicada como ésta vengo corriendo", declaró.

"El Betis necesita de todos los béticos. Yo tenía el billete para irme a Catar y me he venido a Sevilla. Cuando un ser querido está enfermo todos aunamos esfuerzos para ayudarlo. Vengo con la ilusión y el convencimiento de que lo vamos a sacar adelante", agrega.
