Racing y Newell´s definen el martes la Copa Ciudad de Mar del Plata

MAR DEL PLATA -- Racing y Newell´s Old Boys definirán el martes la Copa Ciudad de Mar del Plata en el cierre del triangular que ya dejó a Independiente en el camino.

El partido se jugará en el estadio José María Minella desde las 22.10 con arbitraje de Diego Ceballos y transmisión por el canal FoxSports.

Racing con un empate levantará uno de los dos tradicionales trofeos que se ponen en juego todos los veranos en la Feliz, pues le ganó el clásico a Independiente 3-0, en tanto que el conjunto rosarino solo igualó con el Rojo.

Racing entrenó esta mañana en la cancha auxiliar en Avellaneda, donde hizo ejercicios físicos y una práctica de fútbol de 20 minutos.

El equipo tiene una sola modificación respecto del que le ganó a Independiente, Luciano Vietto ingresará por el lesionado Diego Villar y Gabriel Hauche pasará a ser volante por derecha aunque sumándose al ataque. La delegación con 20 jugadores de Racing viajó a Mar del Plata tras el almuerzo.

Newell´s, por su parte, iría con el mismo equipo que igualó con Independiente.

El equipo hizo fútbol formal ante los suplentes, para el que jugó David Trezeguet, ganando minutos de fútbol, en el predio de APAND, en el Parque Peña marplatense.

Barca ´may have paid €95m for Neymar´

Barcelona may have paid 95 million euros to sign Neymar last summer rather than the 57 million they said they did, leaked court documents seen by El Mundo are reported to reveal.

The Madrid-based newspaper reported that the leaked papers detail three different payments of millions of euros to the Neymar family between 2011 and 2013.

It said some direct payments to the Brazil international’s father are listed as "to scout young talent at [Neymar’s former club] Santos" and "to help children in the favelas of Sao Paulo."

El Mundo reported that the full breakdown of the 95 million euros includes 40 million euros to the Neymar family, 17 million to Santos, 7.9 million for rights to three further young Santos players, nine million euros for two friendly games between the clubs, 8.5 million euros in commission to Neymar senior, 2.6 million euros in other agents´ fees and a signing-on bonus of 10 million euros.

If Barca did pay 38 million euros more than they had stated, Neymar would be the world’s most expensive player ahead of Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, who cost 94 million euros, and Gareth Bale (who Madrid have said cost 91 million euros, despite the general consensus being that the fee was a record 100 million euros).

On Monday, Barcelona sources told Mundo Deportivo that the El Mundo story was false. Barca have previously said the investigation into the Neymar deal is "unjustified" and "strange" and that they remained "calm" about it, insisting the move had been had been complex but skilfully negotiated.

Last week, Neymar said there was "nothing illegal" about the deal, which had been handled on his behalf by his father.

Audiencia Nacional judge Pablo Ruz has reportedly asked for copies of documents from Santos and FIFA as he investigates a complaint by Barca socio Jordi Cases that club president Sandro Rosell and his fellow board members had not told club members the full truth about the deal.

Barca may not be legally obliged to disclose all their business dealings to members and could claim that items such as the friendlies or options on other Santos players were independent agreements and nothing to do with the transfer.

Spanish and Brazilian tax authorities and other observers, including third-party investors who previously held a stake in Neymar´s rights, are likely to be following developments closely.

El Mundo also broke the news of an investigation into allegations that the ´Leo Messi & Friends´ exhibition games played in Colombia and elsewhere last summer were possibly used to launder drug money. That investigation remains ongoing.

Opportunity knocks for Chile´s domestic players

Chile boss Jorge Sampaoli will get a good look at his domestic league-based players when Chile face Costa Rica this week.

Chile take another step on the road to Brazil this Wednesday with a friendly at home versus Costa Rica. Coach Jorge Sampaoli is without his big-name, European-based players. This, then, is an opportunity for fringe names to transform themselves from "possible" to "probable" for the last few slots in the World Cup squad.

One of the most intriguing inclusions in the group to face Costa Rica is Mark Gonzalez, once of Liverpool, who has been back in Chile negotiating his return to Universidad Catolica. Does he still have the old pace and fire that made him such an interesting option down the left flank?

Another fascinating left-sided option is Miiko Albornoz, a 23-year-old full-back/wing-back who plays his football with Malmo of Sweden. Albornoz was born in Sweden to a local mother and a Chilean father, and has come up through the youth ranks representing the land of his birth at the Under-17, -19 and -21 levels. He had the chance to be named in the senior squad, but has chosen instead to cross the Atlantic and turn out for his father´s country. It could be that last year´s sex scandal has played a part in a desire for a new start.

Also changing nationalities is Pablo Hernandez, briefly of MLS side D.C. United. The Argentine-born attacking midfielder was the key figure in O´Higgins´ winning the Chilean title for the first time last month, and has since taken on Chilean nationality. He makes his debut in the squad, while there is also a call-up for his young teammate, central midfielder Cesar Fuentes, a leading member of the highly promising squad Chile took to last year´s World Youth Cup.

At the other end of the age scale, there is a great chance for 33-year-old striker Esteban Parades to force his way into World Cup contention. He has just rejoined local giants Colo Colo from Mexican football, and with the centre forward position something of a doubt in the mind of Sampaoli, opportunity knocks Wednesday for Paredes.

So there are plenty of interesting aspects to the Costa Rica match -- which also provides a much-needed breather to coaches in the Chilean first division.

This is the first year in which the country´s footballing calendar is closely aligned to that of Europe, and so the current championship began on Jan. 3, unusually early for South America, where this month is by custom one of high summer holidays.

In order for the national team to prepare to meet Costa Rica, there are no domestic games this weekend. Three rounds, though, have been played -- and two coaches have already lost their jobs. Omar Labruna, son of one of the all-time greats of Argentine football, Angel Labruna, was sacked by Everton, the club from the lovely seaside resort of Vina del Mar. He had only taken over in October, and his short reign came to an end when Everton began the current campaign with no goals and three consecutive defeats. He is replaced by Nelson Acosta, a wily old Uruguayan with a hangdog expression who took Chile to the 1998 World Cup.

More surprising is that Marco Antonio Figueroa parted company with Universidad de Chile after only three games, a scratchy win followed by two defeats.

"La U" have been the major power in Chilean football in recent times -- it was the club where Sampaoli made his breakthrough, coming to global attention for the swashbuckling way his team won the Copa Sudamericana back in 2011. Of the last six championships, "La U" won three, but then went empty-handed for the next three -- and this despite snapping up almost anyone who was shining with one of the smaller clubs.

It seems as if over the past 18 months the club has been in a permanent state of transition -- continually selling on and buying up, with more players than they know what to do with and little idea of what the best starting lineup should be. Figueroa´s replacement is the club´s former player Cristian Romero. It is an interesting choice because Romero has been working with the youth team, and his appointment would seem to indicate that there will be more chances for homegrown youngsters.

But that is unlikely to include the chance to fight for a place in Chile´s World Cup squad. Those domestically based players who have not been called up for the match against Costa Rica will have to perform miracles on a weekly basis to force their way onto the plane to Brazil.

Quilmes: Chávez tuvo su primera práctica

BUENOS AIRES -- En Quilmes no hay tiempo que perder y por eso, a pesar de que aún restan detalles para firmar su contrato, el delantero Cristian Chávez tuvo su primer entrenamiento, con el objetivo de ponerse a punto de cara al Torneo Final 2014.

El exdelantero de San Lorenzo y Godoy Cruz, entre otros, todavía no pudo firmar su desvinculación con el PAS Giannina de Grecia y por ello aún no firmó el contrato para transformarse de manera oficial en el primer refuerzo de Quilmes.

Igualmente, formó parte de los trabajos desarrollados en la mañana del lunes en el Estadio Centenario, donde el plantel se entrenó tras gozar del fin de semana de licencia, luego de finalizar los once días de pretemporada en Tandil.

La gran incógnita en estas horas pasa por si podrá resolver los detalles para poder tener minutos en el partido amistoso que se disputará en el mismo Centenario, en la mañana del martes, ante Ferro.

Cristian Chávez, de 26 años, surgió en las inferiores de Brown de Adrogué y debutó en la Primera División en 2008 vistiendo la camiseta de San Lorenzo. Luego pasó por Godoy Cruz, Atlético Tucumán, Nápoli, PAS Giannina y Almirante Brown, donde justamente coincidió con Blas Armando Giunta.

Chile tendrá opción en el Mundial si mantiene el nivel, según Sampaoli

SANTIAGO DE CHILE -- El seleccionador chileno, el argentino Jorge Sampaoli, afirmó que su selección tendrá opciones en el próximo Mundial de Brasil si mantiene el nivel que mostró en 2013 y se manifestó "ilusionado" con que el equipo dé una sorpresa en la máxima cita futbolística.

"Chile tendrá alguna opción si mantiene el rendimiento que consiguió en 2013 (...). En los Mundiales puede haber equipos que sorprendan, y nosotros nos ilusionamos con dar una sorpresa", afirmó en una rueda de prensa el técnico argentino, cuyo equipo jugará un amistoso preparatorio el próximo miércoles contra Costa Rica.

A juicio de Sampaoli, dicho encuentro, a jugarse en el puerto de Coquimbo (norte), "sirve para ir viendo a jugadores que pueden ser opción para el Mundial", al tiempo que mostró respeto por Costa Rica, que también estará en Brasil.

"Maneja muy bien los tiempos de contragolpe y llega con muchas de sus figuras", dijo, y añadió que la velocidad de su juego "fue la clave en su clasificación (al Mundial)".

"Si no estamos atentos, nos pueden complicar", añadió.

Sampaoli dijo que su preocupación actual en la conformación de la plantilla mundialista es un delantero centro, considerando que Humberto Suazo está lesionado y no se recuperará a tiempo, por lo cual convocó para este amistoso a Esteban Peredes, recién repatriado desde México por el Colo Colo, y a Carlos Muñoz, que juega en el Baniyas emiratí.

También Sampaoli dijo que necesita sustitutos para los laterales Mauricio Isla, por la derecha y Eugenio Mena, por la izquierda. Para el primer caso cuenta con los colocolinos Gonzalo Fierro y José Pedro Fuenzalida, mientras para el carril izquierdo convocó a Miiko Albnornoz, nacido en Suecia y jugador del Malmö de ese país.

"Venimos siguiendo a Albornoz desde que supimos que podía ser nominado, se abrió la opción y quisimos tenerlo. Ha mostrado una muy buena disposición y tenemos la esperanza de que tenga un buen partido (contra Costa Rica)", explicó.

"Lo vimos en su club y en la selección Sub-21 de Suecia. Es un jugador de mucho potencial, maneja los dos perfiles, se ha adaptado a las características y ojalá que su elección por Chile sea la ideal. Él privilegió sus sentimientos por la selección nacional, eso es valioso". añadió.

"Tenemos que ser precavidos y tener reemplazos en un montón de lugares, porque no sabemos en qué condiciones van a llegar los jugadores al Mundial", dijo el técnico, que también se mostró confiado en la recuperación del centrocampista Jorge Valdivia.

"Estamos convencidos de que tendremos a un Jorge Valdivia en buenas condiciones para el Mundial", agregó.

Sampaoli insistió en que es necesario jugar partidos preparatorios con equipos de alto nivel, de preferencia europeos, con las características de los que va a enfrentar en el Mundial, donde Chile quedó encasillado en el grupo B con España, Holanda y Australia en la primera fase.

La selección de Chile ha trabajado en doble jornada preparando el amistoso con Costa Rica y tiene previsto viajar este martes a Coquimbo, sede del encuentro, a 452 kilómetros al norte de Santiago.
