Sampaoli to Test Options Against Costa Rica
Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli will use the friendly match against Costa Rica to test some new options for La Roja. Many of the players will look for a place in the final World Cup squad.
COQUIMBO — The clash between Chile and Costa Rica will be the first run for the year, with many players hoping to impress Jorge Sampaoli to book their ticket to Brazil. While the non-FIFA date would normally see a squad entirely made up of domestic players, the former Universidad de Chile coach has taken the opportunity to call upon Carlos Muñoz from Baniyas (UAE) as well as Pablo Hernández and Miiko Albornoz, who recently completed the tramites to become Chilean.
While the selection of Albornoz came from out of the blue, Sampaoli stated that he had been well aware of the Malmo player since finding out he had the desire to play for Chile. He had turned down the offer from Sweden coach Eri Hamren to try and fight for a place in the World Cup with Chile.
Another naturalized Chilean, Gustavo Canales, was initially called up to the squad, but due to injury Sampaoli preferred his recuperation process happened at the club. While Eduardo Vargas, who was a surprise guest at training last week, was the big star in Universidad de Chile’s Copa Sudamericana campaign under Sampaoli, Canales was a key cog in the “La U” attack.
Sampaoli has taken the opportunity to call on Mark González and Esteban Paredes. With González due to be presented this week at Universidad Católica, and Paredes returning to Colo Colo, some of the “old hands” could provide valuable experience both against Costa Rica and in Brazil. Both have had to take severe pay cuts in order to return to Chile.
Looking towards the World Cup, Sampaoli said that he hoped to see a fully fit Jorge Valdivia, while in regards to Matías Fernández the Argentinian coach looked towards a full fit “Matigol” returning to be a regular part of the selection. While the Fiorentina player was one of the first selected under Claudio Borghi, troubles with injury saw the former “Player of América” fall off the radar.
As for the opposition, Chile will be have to be prepared for counter-attacking raids, with Sampaoli saying, “If we’re not accurate in the attacking plays, we will suffer from their fast counter-attack, which was key to their qualification for the World Cup.”
Reigning champions O’Higgins are strongly represented in the squad, with Paulo Garcés, Albert Acevedo, César Fuentes, Braulio Leal, Pablo Hernández and Gonzalo Barriga all getting a call up.
The match will kick off in Coquimbo at 9 p.m. on Wednesday January 22.
