Honduras confirms pre-World Cup schedule

TEGUCIGALPA.- Honduras’ pre-World Cup itinerary became more clear Sunday, when Alfredo Hawit – General Secretary of the Federación Nacional Autónoma de Fútbol de Honduras – confirmed on the Vistazo Deportivo radio show that the national team has scheduled four friendly internationals.

Hawit said that Tunisia will travel to Honduras for a March 5 encounter with the Catrachos at the Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula.

The second match will be on May 31 against Colombia in either New York or Chicago. Then, head coach Luis Fernando Suarez’s squad will meet Ivory Coast at a location to be determined, before concluding the slate three days later against England at SunLife Stadum in Miami Gardens, Florida.

Prior to the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, Honduras prepared for the competition with games against the United States, Turkey, Venezuela, Belarus, Azerbaijan and Romania.

For Brazil 2014, the CONCACAF power was drawn into Group E, where it will face France (June 15), Ecuador (June 20) and Switzerland (June 25).

Teo Gutiérrez: "Ojalá podamos revertir la imagen del torneo pasado"

BUENOS AIRES -- El delantero de River, Teófilo Gutiérrez, aseguró el martes que espera que "sigan las victorias en el torneo" y se mostró muy feliz por los resultados obtenidos ante Boca Juniors durante los torneos de verano en Córdoba y Mendoza.

El delantero colombiano habló este martes en el predio de Ezeiza, y en conferencia de prensa sostuvo: "Ojalá podamos revertir la imagen del torneo pasado, cuando no salieron las cosas como esperábamos. Y estamos trabajando con mucha alegría en la pretemporada para lograrlo".

Consultado sobre los triunfos ante Boca y el festejo de su gol tras la victoria por 2-1 en Mendoza, Teo advirtió: "Los goles son amores y hay que festejarlos, no creo haber ofendido a nadie, lo festejé como hincha un River".

En tanto, sobre la supremacía en los superclásicos de verano, el delantero confió: "Hemos jugado buenos partidos y siempre es positivo ganar ese tipo de partidos porque ayuda mucho al ánimo de la gente y del grupo, pero hay que pensar en Gimnasia".

En este sentido, Teo elogió al Lobo platense y dijo que va a ser "sumamente difícil" porque los vio jugar en el verano y "tienen un equipo fuerte, que juega bien al fútbol, pero nosotros estamos enfocados en nuestro equipo".

Por último, en referencia a su dupla con Fernando Cavenaghi, el jugador de la selección colombiana asintió: "Estoy muy contento de jugar con él, es un gran jugador que se mueve mucho y de a poco nos vamos entendiendo y es un ídolo que aporta mucho".

Por su parte, el defensor Gabriel Mercado, quien también participó de la rueda de prensa, fue consultado sobre los clásicos de verano y respondió: "Estamos muy contentos por los triunfos y porque hemos podido mostrar el juego que pretendemos para el torneo, el de presionar y el de ir al ataque".

Respecto a la posibilidad de jugar en otra posición por la lesión de Carlos Carbonero, Mercado enfatizó que no tiene inconvenientes, aunque pidió "que se recupere Carlos (Carbonero) para que el entrenador pueda contar con todos y decidir lo mejor para el equipo".

Botafogo reject offer for Dória

The Alvinegro have rejected an approach from Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Centre-back Dória has attracted the interest of many European clubs since his rise at the Rio club but it now appears as though he will stay at Botafogo at least until later this year when the transfer windows of the principal markets reopen.

The most recent attempt to purchase the 18-year-old was made by Galatasaray two weeks ago. The offer, however, did not reach the £17m buy-out clause required for the player.

“The player spoke with the management and it was decided that he wouldn’t leave in the latest transfer window but would stay at least until later this year. Of course we cannot rule out the possibility that he will stay at Botafogo even longer than that,” confirmed Dória’s agent, Jolden Vergette.

It is thought that Galatasaray are still interested in the player and are likely to make an improved bid when the transfer window reopens.

Trezeguet: "Muchas ondas positivas para tratar de ser protagonistas"

ROSARIO -- El delantero de Newell`s Old Boys David Trezeguet expresó el martes que su equipo llegó con "ondas positivas" al comienzo del torneo Final 2014 y con ese impulso intentará ser "protagonista" para pelear por el título.

"Llegamos con muchas ondas positivas para tratar de ser protagonistas. Sería interesante empezar de la mejor manera. Tenemos muchas expectativas por este inicio de campeonato", manifestó Trezeguet en conferencia de prensa.

El exdelantero de Juventus de Italia apuntó que el debut del próximo domingo, ante Boca Juniors, es "muy interesante" para Newell`s porque es un rival "importante" que medirá la actualidad futbolística de su equipo.

A su vez, Trezeguet, exdelantero e hincha de River Plate, indicó que Boca es un rival "al que todos quieren ganar" y subrayó que Newell`s deberá imponer su protagonismo "en esta clase de partidos".

El exgoleador del seleccionado francés de fútbol, campeón en el Mundial Francia 1998, también se refirió al arribo del volante Ever Banega, procedente de Valencia de España: "Vino con el objetivo de ser convocado para el Mundial de Brasil, ganarse un lugar y puede ser fundamental. Además es hincha, un beneficio para el grupo de Newell`s".

Por último, Trezeguet, de 36 años, descató su primera participación en la Copa Libertadores de América, con Newell`s, que integrará el grupo 6: "Para mí lo importante es conocer esta competición. Será una experiencia única poder sumar a esta edad algo muy positivo".

Newell`s Old Boys debutará en el torneo Final 2014 el próximo domingo, en el estadio Coloso Marcelo Bielsa, ante Boca Juniors, a partir de las 18.15, con el arbitraje de Mauro Vigliano.

Alejandro Silva, nuevo refuerzo de Lanús

BUENOS AIRES -- Tardó en llegar, pero finalmente se concretó. Lanús, flamante campeón de la Copa Sudamericana, adquirió a su primer refuerzo de cara al próximo semestre en el cual disputará el Torneo Final y la Copa Libertadores.

El lateral uruguayo Alejandro Silva jugará en Lanús, luego de confirmar a través de su cuenta de Twitter que dejará Olimpia de Paraguay, club donde se desempeñaba desde hace dos años, luego de ser transferido desde Fenix de Uruguay.

El equipo dirigido por Guillermo Barros Schelotto adquirirá el 50% del pase del uruguayo que en varias oportunidades entró en la consideración de Oscar Washington Tabárez para el seleccionado nacional. Silva firmará un contrato por tres años y medio, por lo que estará ligado a la institución del sur del Gran Buenos Aires, al menos hasta junio de 2017.

Mientras tanto, el plantel se prepara para disputar el partido de vuelta del repechaje para lograr el ingreso a la fase de grupos de la Libertadores. Tras ganar 2 a 0 en Venezuela, el "Granate" intentará finiquitar la clasificación el próximo jueves, en la Fortaleza.

Para dicho partido, la formación inicial sería: Agustín Machesín; Carlos Araujo, Paolo Goltz, Carlos Izquierdoz, Maximiliano Velázquez; Diego González, Leandro Somoza, Víctor Ayala; Lautaro Acosta, Santiago Silva y Oscar Benítez.

Lanús debutará en el Torneo Final el próximo lunes, cuando visite a Belgrano en Córdoba. Cabe recordar que en caso de lograr la clasificación a la fase de grupos de la Copa Libertadores, los de Guillermo compartirán zona con Cerro Porteño de Paraguay, Deportivo Cali de Colombia y O´Higgins de Chile.

Carlos Vela: A terrible waste

We could say it in a melodramatic tone: "The last ´Vela´ (or ´candle´) of hope for a national team that will sail in turbulent waters in Brazil 2014."
... Or perhaps we could play psychologist: "It´s a matter of personality. His personality doesn´t allow him to see further and he fears heroic deeds." Or we could use nationalist tones, not to call them jingoist -- very cited, in fact, on Monday morning on social media websites. "He is a traitor. He should never return to the national team. Let him go and play for Spain."

But let´s try, to the extent possible, to avoid exaggeration: Carlos Vela said "no" to playing on the Mexican national team and it is his legal right to say "no" to a national team that represents a country´s soccer but not the country itself. Returning to soccer per se, something else is obvious in this matter: Mexico needs or needed Carlos Vela´s contribution on the field and Carlos Vela needs or needed the talent showcase that is soccer´s World Cup. No matter how you toss the dice, it´s a terrible waste.

Fact: Carlos Vela is the best Mexican soccer player at present. Another fact: His refusal has been a moral defeat for the Mexican national soccer team. And a third fact: With or without Vela, Mexico´s national soccer team has the same expectations for Brazil 2014.

But when the national coach talks about giving preferential treatment and space to those players who won the World Cup spot, he could be choosing the wrong tactic. World Cup qualifying is very different, especially in the way that Mexico made it, by winning a vile playoff game, than what teams will find in Brazil this summer. Mexico´s level of competition in its "soccer achievement" against New Zealand is insufficient for competing properly at the World Cup. We can´t block out the sun with one finger: Carlos Vela was a sure bet for a more competitive, more technical, more intelligent style of play. That´s why they went to get him. Those who believe that with a foundation of players from Leon and Club America, Mexico can compete in the World Cup, I invite them to take a very cold shower and wake up to reality.

Then there are those who insist that what´s necessary is delving into the past to find the true motives for which a 24-year-old kid in the prime of his life, playing for a team in Spain´s La Liga, allows himself the luxury -- and it is a luxury -- of turning down soccer´s World Cup. The question is: Is it worthwhile for him? Maybe it is, if it helps us find the truth. And there´s one truth that often we are afraid to even think or say: El Tri is so devalued and damaged as a team and as an institution that it doesn´t ignite a passion in the players.

Carlos Vela will not be at the World Cup. It´s a shame because he was and continues to be one of the greatest projects of the most recent era in Mexican soccer. He made a decision. The decision should be respected, but that doesn´t prevent it from being -- no matter how you slice it -- a terrible waste.
