Estudiantes: Pellegrino aún no definió el equipo para el debut

LA PLATA -- El técnico de Estudiantes, Mauricio Pellegrino, decidió cerrar el miércoles las puertas del Country Club y dispuso un trabajo táctico, mezclando titulares con suplentes, y la noticia más destacada es que Gastón Gil Romero, a pesar de su molestia en el sóleo derecho, trabajó con normalidad y podrá estar en el debut ante Arsenal.

El partido, por la primera fecha del torneo Final, es este viernes a las 17 en el Estadio Ciudad de La Plata.

En principio el único interrogante que mantiene el entrenador es quiénes ocuparán los puestos de mediocampistas externos y hay tres candidatos para dos lugares: Carlos Auzqui, Patricio Rodríguez y Joaquín Correa.

La probable alineación para el primer juego del Torneo Final 2014 sería con Gerónimo Rulli, Mauricio Rosales, Jonathan Schunke, Leandro Desábato y Jonatan Silva; Auzqui o Rodríguez, Gil Romero, Román Martínez y Correa o Rodríguez, Franco Jara y Guido Carrillo.

Al mismo tiempo se espera que llegue la habilitación del uruguayo Juan Manuel Olivera para que pueda ser incluido en el banco de suplentes.

En cuanto al tema refuerzos se mantendrá una última reunión con la gente de All Boys para conseguir el pase del chileno Gonzalo Espinoza, pero la postura del conjunto de Floresta está firme y la intención es no desprenderse del mediocampista por pedido del entrenador.

Igualmente desde Estudiantes gestionan la llegada de un delantero argentino, que se encuentra en el exterior, pero su nombre no trascendió. Se trabaja contrareloj, ya que el jueves se cerrará el libro de pases.

Patricio Rodríguez, una de las dudas del técnico para el primer partido, realizó declaraciones y manifestó que "me sentí bien, cómodo en el partido ante Gimnasia y creo que el resultado debió ser otro. Tengo mucha ilusión, trabajo para estar y la realidad es que espero jugar más y mejor".

Al referirse al rival de este viernes, el siempre complicado Arsenal, destacó que "es un equipo al que hay que tomar con mucho respeto, está bien trabajado y es muy difícil. Tengo fe en que será un lindo torneo y vamos a dar pelea, porque el grupo se lo merece. Se entrena bien, se apunta a cosas específicas y se llega de la mejor manera al inicio del torneo".

El Patito habló de sus futuro, ya que es préstamo caduca a fines de junio y al respecto puntualizó:" esto es día a día, es muy difícil proyectar algo en el fútbol argentino. No es fácil saber que va a pasar mañana o dentro de una semana, así que mucho menos de acá a seis meses. Lo que si puede asegurar es que en Estudiantes me siento muy cómodo y me gusta estar".

Rodríguez llegó a préstamo por una temporada desde el fútbol brasileño y la opción para la compra del 50 por ciento es de 1 millón y medio de dólares, cifra que no es sencilla de poder afrontar en el fútbol argentino.

Estudiantes debutará este viernes a las 17 contra Arsenal, por la segunda fecha visitará a All Boy el sábado 15 a las 17, en la tercera recibirá a Lanús el miércoles 19 en horario a definir y por la cuarta irá a la Bombonera a jugar contra Boca el domingo 23, seguramente en el horario de las 21.30.

FOOLS GOLD: AN ODE TO PANAMA´S JILTED GENERATION

The Americans win; The Mexicans advance: Panama’s Golden Generation goes home.

The feeling surrounding Estadio Rommel Fernández mirrors that of the Panamanian tropical monsoon. Countless white, cotton handkerchiefs seemingly move in unison to wipe away the collective brow of La Marea Roja. Thunderheads, per usual, drift in the vicinity, ready to inundate the stadium in an instant; and the anticipation, equal in both permeation and volatility, is reaching its crescendo…for after crashing out of the second round of 2010 qualifying, Panamá is back in the Hex. And after defeating Honduras earlier in the spring, Panamá welcomes regional powerhouse México, both nations atop the standings. Big points and big dreams are at stake.

In my former life I drove oil tankers. Before you ask, the answer’s, no, I wasn’t captain. It could be said that I was a sort of assistant manager to him, filling a position called “third mate.” But that means very little to those without a background in the profession. Daily life was monotonous (i.e. no Leviathan, no rogue waves, many sleepless nights), but the merchant mariner mystique meant I liked it. There was something intimately fulfilling about a successful port call, as there was about ringing “Departure,” the official indication we’d set out to sea. And I’d be remiss to leave out the most attractive feature: two months off for every two months worked, all salaried. Not a bad schedule in your mid-twenties. But after several years the routine became cumbersome and the mystique less mysterious. The night watches ticked by interminably and I found myself counting seconds to see if I could hit 60 the moment the clock changed. ‘Get out or be trapped forever’ began to surround my days so I eventually left and returned to school.

Flash forward a year and I find myself, handkerchief in hand, haggling away for a chance to get into Rommel. Swathes of red and blue move about in each’s own pre-match ritual. Some sing. Some dance. All indulge and prepare themselves for [un]certain victory. Televisions broadcast the ongoing qualifying matches around the stadium, and the familiar beat of the Latin American tempo drum is interrupted intermittently by the piercing sound of air horns, some near…some far. The match is particularly interesting to me because I studied in Guadalajara in the spring (becoming an avid Atlas supporter along the way) and am currently interning in Colón. My time in México only deepened my dichotomous relationship with the nation – love México, loathe El Tri – and my time in Panamá had already wrought in me sympathy for the cause – “MÍ lÍmite…El Cielo. Nuetro sueño…ir al Mundial.”

The present day Panamanian squad is considered its Golden Generation. Ask any Panamanian though and odds are they’ll demand “Fool’s” be stamped in front of Golden, not overly dissimilarly from that of the English. Although runners-up in the 2005 Gold Cup, having defeated Colombia twice along the way, Los Canaleros managed only 2 of 30 points in the Hex, without a doubt the more important tournament. Lackluster performances in the 2007 and 2009 Gold Cups continued to tarnish anything resembling a Golden Generation and ultimately bookended the country’s most painful defeat to date: a 2-3 reverse to El Salvador. After winning at home and claiming an early away goal, Panamá needed only to preserve the aggregate 2-0 lead for the remaining 75 minutes to advance. But 50 minutes in, Cheyo Quintanilla, a journeyman midfielder currently belonging to Costa Rican club L.D. Alajuelense, guided a 25 yard direct kick into the upper left hand corner levelling the match 1-1. Thirteen minutes following it, Estadio Cuscatlán - the largest in Central America - exploded after Cheyo was bundled over in the box and converted the penalty, putting El Salvador ahead. The water-soaked pitch was hardly prepared to handle the frantic final minutes - passes halting halfway due to puddles, patches of sod tearing from the earth, waterlogged boots trudging through the morass...but it didn’t have long to wait. Just four minutes after the Quintanilla penalty, a speculative effort from RB Luis Anaya was deflected into the net and saw Panamá crash out of the 2nd round of CONCACAF qualifying, a round in which both Haiti and Suriname would advance. Blas Perez, Luis Tejada, Jaime Penedo, and Felipe Baloy – its Golden Generation - were all in their prime.

I remember sitting in the stands of Rommel with a few of my Panamanian coworkers struck by the cheeriness of it all. Boxes of beer – literally 20 individual cups – were on sale and fireman-brigaded to the terraces while The Wave cascaded around the stadium more times than I can remember. The national anthem nearly razed the stadium before kickoff and the tifo scenes were simple, yet elegantly constructed. The band (weird, right?) played throughout the entirety within choreographed dance routines and the youthful exuberance of the entire occasion reminded me more of an adult’s Friday Night Lights, American-style football game than World Cup qualifying. It was La Marea Roja, led by its aging stars - stars it had ridden since the 2005 Gold Cup finals - playing in a recently remodeled stadium, for what will most likely be its last shot at a World Cup for quite some time. Yet, the overwhelming sensation was confidence rather than nervousness, positivity rather than cynicism.

Each of these thoughts raced through my head as I watched the remaining minutes of the final matches in October. A 63rd minute goal from Costa Rican Álvaro Saborío condemned México to the mercy of the United States (an inherently loaded statement geopolitically, let alone soccer-wise) and its match with Panamá. México could not even accomplish what they had done so well over the course of qualifying – draw – and, consequently, balanced every El Tri-faithful on pins and needles for the remainder of the evening. An 83rd minute go-ahead goal by Luis “Matador” Tejada only seemed to confirm the inevitable for the Mexicans as an entire nation inched its way towards perhaps its biggest soccer-related disappointment in history. Conversely, with less than ten minutes in regulation, Panamá were defeating the mighty United States and headed to its first ever World Cup; Rommel threatened to tear the continents in two and a generation was about to finally fulfill its promise. As the seconds ticked by I found myself counting along and realizing why on the bridge I was almost always early. The way in which time dragged was excruciating. I found myself pacing the bar – in South Carolina – picturing both my friends in México despondent and my coworkers in Panamá elated. As I imagined the contrasting scenes a very peculiar feeling dawned on me: I wanted us to lose. I wanted the CONCACAF world shattered in two very different and very opposing ways. I wanted an entire country’s fantasy to be fulfilled even if it meant heartbreak for an entirety of others. Since I’ve never played fantasy I’ve never felt that awkward, inner conflict, when you kinda-sorta-maybe want your team to lose if it helps the fantasy squad. But now I understood: Panamá was my fantasy squad.

By now you’re aware of the result. A 92nd minute Graham Zusi leveler preceded a 93rd minute Aron Johannsson winner and two Latin American were, indeed, shattered, although for the opposite reason I had hoped: Panamá because it had missed its last great chance and México because it would be forced to thank America for a trip to Brazil. My social media lit up as you’d expect: sardonic Americans, humiliated Mexicans…and – above all – truly morose Panamanians. I actually found myself angry with Zeus, something I recognized as being completely irrational. Most of all though I swear I felt at least a small piece of the heartbreak – albeit much differently – that an entire Central American country had lost not only the World Cup, but its Golden Generation, as well.

New York City will have pick of Manchester City youngsters

Manchester City´s youngsters will have the opportunity to play for New York City once the MLS franchise is up and running.

The American side will be allowed to loan four players from its parent club in England, providing New York with up-and-coming talent and giving the English-based players first-team opportunities.

Head coach Jason Kreis has already begun sizing up which players from City´s academy he would like to take to New York for the 2015 season when they begin life in MLS.

The 41-year-old was appointed last month and is keen to start building for their first campaign as soon as possible.

"We will have the ability to take four players on loan from the club here," he told the Premier League club´s official website.

"So I´m looking a lot at the younger players, and the Under-18s and the Under-21s at the moment and also the players that are out on loan.

"We have a very big interest in bringing some City players over to join us in New York and I certainly think there’s the talent there.

"And the ambition is there as well, so we´ll have to get with those guys over the next six months to a year and see whether or not that’s something they would like as well."

Manchester City announced their intentions to launch a team in America in May 2013, and have since acquired Melbourne Heart in the Australian A-League for a similar ventur

Boca: Perotti superó los estudios médicos

BUENOS AIRES -- A poco más de 24 horas para el inicio del Torneo Final, el tercer refuerzo de Boca, Diego Perotti, aprobó los chequeos médicos realizados en el Centro de Diagnóstico IMAXE y en la tarde del jueves estará firmando su contrato.

El mediocampista llegada a préstamo desde el Sevilla por seis meses y con una opción de compra de dos millones y medio de dólares por el 50% de su pase. Cabe recordar que Perotti tiene contrato con el club español hasta junio de 2015.

La firma del contrato del jugador con la institución Xeneize está prevista para la tarde del jueves y luego participará del entrenamiento que el plantel desarrollará bajo las órdenes de Carlos Bianchi, desde las 17 hs. Igualmente, está confirmado que Perotti no debutará el próximo domingo ya que la habilitación correspondiente recién llegará la semana próxima.

De esta forma, Boca, que jugará el domingo ante Newell´s por la primera fecha del Torneo Final, sumó a su tercera incorporación, teniendo en cuenta que tras contratar a Juan Forlín y Hernán Grana se le abrió un cupo extra por la lesión de Joel Acosta.

Cipoletti inhibió a San Lorenzo y peligra el debut de Blandi

BUENOS AIRES -- San Lorenzo fue inhibido por el club Cipolletti de Río Negro debido al incumplimiento en el pago de una deuda, por el pase del juvenil Valentín Perales, y debería saldarla para poder utilizar mañana a sus refuerzos en el debut en el Torneo Final frente a Olimpo de Bahía Blanca.

"San Lorenzo estará más interesado que nosotros de que se levante la inhibición", dijo Sebastián Caldiero, abogado del club rionegrino.

Cipolletti le reclama al "Ciclón" una suma cercana a los 400.000 pesos. San Lorenzo elevó una propuesta para pagar esa deuda en cuotas pero fue rechazada por el club que milita en el Torneo Argentino A, porque pretende percibir el monto en un solo pago.

Si bien los directivos de San Lorenzo contactarían en las próximas horas a sus pares de Cipolletti para acordar el pago, de no llegar a un acuerdo Edgardo Bauza podría no contar con Nicolás Blandi, su centrodelantero titular.

San Lorenzo y Olimpo se enfrentarán este viernes en Bahía Blanca, a partir de las 21.30 y con arbitraje de Andrés Merlos.

Pelé, irónico contra Diego Maradona

El ex futbolista brasileño Pelé, considerado el mejor futbolista de su época, habló irónicamente de Maradona después de que el argentino ubicara al piloto de Fórmula 1 Ayrton Senna como el mejor deportista brasileño de la historia.

Pelé opinó que los argentinos en vez de comparar, deben decidir cuál fue el mejor jugador de su historia.

"Maradona me ama", dijo Pelé cuando le preguntaron qué opinaba sobre los dichos de Diego argumentando que el mejor deportista de la historia brasileña es el fallecido piloto de Fórmula 1 Ayrton Senna.

Pero Pelé, quien estuvo presente en una ceremonia en donde una marca de relojes suiza presentó un modelo con su nombre en Río de Janeiro, no se limitó a Maradona y se refirió al resto de los argentinos.

"Los argentinos gustan de las comparaciones. Ellos tuvieron grandes jugadores como Alfredo Di Stéfano, Omar Sívori, Maradona y Lionel Messi, pero yo les digo a mis amigos argentinos que primeros deben elegir al mejor jugador de su historia para después determinar quién fue el mejor del mundo", dijo el brasileño.

Pelé, de 73 años, fue tricampeón mundial con el seleccionado brasileño en Suecia 1958, Chile 1962 y México 1970. Jugó en Santos de Brasil y Cosmos de EE.UU habiendo jugado 1.227 cotejos y habiendo convertido 1.151 goles.

Vélez repite a los once para el debut

BUENOS AIRES -- A una semana de la primera consagración de Vélez en el 2014, José Óscar "Turu" Flores confirmó a los once titulares para el debut del conjunto de Liniers en el Torneo Final, ante Tigre.

Luego de una serie de trabajos tácticos, haciendo hincapié en el aspecto defensivo, el "Turu" dio a conocer la nómina de convocados y en la misma ya no está incluido Francisco Cerro, quien pasó a saludar a sus compañeros, tras confirmarse su transferencia a Racing.

En definitiva, los once que saldrán desde el inicio en el José Amalfitani serán: Sebastián Sosa; Fabián Cubero, Sebastián Domínguez, Fernando Tobio y Emiliano Papa; Agustín Allione, Lucas Romero, Héctor Canteros y Ariel Cabral; Mauro Zárate y Lucas Pratto.

En cuanto al mercado de pases, a pocas horas del cierre del período de inscripción se aguarda, hay dos nombres apuntados, cuya llegada es complicada pero no imposible. Se trata de Franco Vázquez, de poco lugar en el Palermo, y Nicolás Otamendi, quien fue adquirido por Valencia, pero no podrá jugar ya que el equipo español tiene el cupo de extracomunitarios completo.

Vélez, escolta en el Torneo Inicial, debutará el viernes en el campeonato argentino ya que el próximo martes debutará en la Copa Libertadores ante Universitario, en Perú. Cabe recordar que también integrarán el grupo 1 The Strongest de Bolivia y Atlético Paranaense de Brasil, que eliminó por penales a Sporting Cristal.

Mauro Matos se entrenó pero no concentra

BUENOS AIRES -- Luego de realizarse los estudios médicos y firmar su contrato, Mauro Matos se puso bajo las órdenes de Edgardo Bauza y completó su primer entrenamiento en San Lorenzo.

El último campeón, que pagó por él una suma cercana a los dos millones de pesos, contrató así a su tercer refuerzo de cara al Torneo Final y la Copa Libertadores y así, todo indica que se retirará del mercado y no hará uso del cupo extra por la lesión de Gonzalo Verón.

Igualmente, el delantero no viajará a Bahia Blanca de cara al debut ante Olimpo y seguramente tendrá su debut la próxima semana por Copa Libertadores. Además, también se ausentará en la nómina el defensor Carlos Valdés, debido a que Independienet de Santa Fe aún no envió el transfer.

En definitiva los once que jugarán desde el inicio ante Olimpo serán: Sebastián Torrico, Julio Buffarini, Pablo Alvarado, Santiago Gentiletti, Emmanuel Más; Ángel Correa, Néstor Ortigoza, Juan Mercier, Ignacio Piatti; Leandro Romagnoli; Nicolás Blandi.

Mientras tanto, completarán la delegación: Cristian Álvarez; Matías Catalán, Mauro Cetto, Walter Kannemann, Enzo Kalinski, Juan Ignacio Cavallaro, Fernando Elizari, Leandro Navarro y Héctor Villalba.

San Lorenzo debutará el viernes debido a que la próxima semana estará debutando en la Copa Libertadores. Su primera presentación en la competencia más importante a nivel continental será ante Botafogo, que eliminó al Deportivo Quito en el repechaje. Además, integran el grupo 2 Unión Española de Chile e Independiente del Valle de Ecuador.

Lowe expects son to excel in MLS

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands -- Former Jamaica striker Onandi Lowe is confident his son Damion will make a positive impact on Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders.

The younger Lowe was drafted eighth in the MLS Super Draft last month -- one of three Jamaicans chosen in the first ten selections -- after three years at the University of Hartford in the United States.

At 6-foot, 3-inches tall, the defender possesses the physical characteristics of his powerfully built father, but prefers to marshal the defence rather than display ferocious attacking capabilities.

Onandi told CONCACAF.com he wasn’t surprised that his 20-year-old was one of the most highly sought after university footballers in the United States.

“A good teacher always has an excellent student,” Lowe said with a laugh. “Damion has football is in his blood. I knew one day he would hit the market. He is a young man who always set his goals and is disciplined. This is the chance he always wanted.”

A dominant figure for Jamaica in the 1990’s, the elder Lowe also played in MLS for the Kansas City Wizards (now Sporting Kansas City), as well as with Port Vale, Rushden & Diamonds and Coventry City in England.

Lowe commented that the MLS progressed significantly since his playing days.

“The MLS is more professional than when I played,” said the 39-year-old. “It is quickly becoming a highlight league, with players from Europe coming over to play. The MLS is making good moves.”

In 65 international appearances, Lowe scored 27 goals and was known as a free-kick specialist.

He recalled that the most memorable moment of his career was representing Jamaica at the 1998 FIFA World Cup Finals in France.

Jamaica was the first English-speaking Caribbean nation to participate in the tournament. Under the guidance of Brazilian head coach Rene Simoes, Lowe played the entire 90 minutes in an historic win over Japan (2-1), as well as the opening loss to Croatia (3-1).

“That was the height,” expressed Lowe. “A great memory for me that I was part of a team that reached the pinnacle of the game.”

And with Damion’s career off to an outstanding start, Lowe may get the chance to relive World Cup excitement…as a father cheering on his son.
