San Lorenzo: El campeón va por más

BUENOS AIRES -- El 2013 terminó de manera soñada para San Lorenzo: con el ansiado título de campeón. Luego de un torneo irregular, el Ciclón, con apenas 33 puntos, se dio el gusto de dar la vuelta olímpica en la última fecha y ante Vélez, en Liniers.

Pero la alegría le dejó paso a la incertidumbre cuando unos días después Juan Antonio Pizzi, el entrenador que llevó adelante ese proceso, presentó la renuncia y se fue a dirigir al Valencia, de España.

La dirigencia del Ciclón se movió rápido y llegó a un acuerdo con Edgardo Bauza, un técnico que para este semestre del conjunto de Boedo parece ideal: es uno de los más experimentados en Copa Libertadores, la gran apuesta de San Lorenzo en este semestre.

El Patón fue campeón con Liga de Quito en 2009, y conoce y mucho el ámbito sudamericano. Se sabe, la Copa es la gran obsesión del Ciclón, teniendo en cuenta que es el título que todos los hinchas quieren, ya que nunca lo pudieron obtener.

El conjunto azulgrana mantuvo buena parte de la base del equipo campeón del año pasado: Torrico, la revelación, clave por sus atajadas, Mercier, Ortigoza, Romagnoli, Piatti... Y sumó al defensor colombiano Carlos Valdés y a los delanteros Nicolás Blandi y Mauro Matos como refuerzos.

Valdés forma parte de la selección de su país y ya fue dirigido por Bauza en la Liga de Quito. Más: llegó también por recomendación de Pekerman, DT de Colombia.

Blandi, en tanto, relegado en Boca por Gigliotti, es el goleador que viene buscando el equipo desde la lesión de Cauteruccio, quien podría volver a jugar en marzo, luego de la lesión ligamentaria sufrida en el Inicial pasado. En tanto que Matos, goleador del último campeonato, llega desde All Boys.

Los amistosos de pretemporada dejaron balance positivo: hubo cuatro partidos jugados, y cuatro victorias, ante Santamarina, San Martín, River y Danubio.

El técnico sabe que la exigencia será mucha, pero sube la apuesta: "Vamos a pelear en los dos frentes. Tenemos la obligación de hacerlo. Después, veremos si hay que elegir entre uno y otra competencia".

PARA TENER EN CUENTA: La llegada de Bauza, un DT con experiencia en Copas, puede ser positiva, pero habrá que tener en cuenta que como en todo proceso que se inicia, el DT y los jugadores pueden necesitar de un período de adaptación.

Tigre: Quiere quedarse en Primera

BUENOS AIRES -- "No me puse una cantidad de puntos determinada. Lo que queremos es dejar a Tigre en Primera", dice el entrenador Fabián Alegre. No hay dudas, ese es el objetivo del Matador para el presente campeonato.

Si bien es cierto que los de Victoria arrancarán bastante lejos de los puestos de abajo, el equipo no puede relajarse. Los 25 puntos que se obtuvieron el torneo pasado sirvieron para salir de la zona roja de la tabla, de la cual Tigre había quedado cerca en el primer tramo del Inicial.

Sin encontrar el rumbo, Diego Cagna se fue a la sexta fecha, y en su lugar llegó un DT desconocido para la mayoría: Alegre, que estaba en las Inferiores, finalmente se consolidó en el primer equipo y pasó de interino a permanente.

Sin recetas mágicas, el entrenador apeló a la frescura de varios pibes surgidos de las Inferiores (Arzura y Godoy, entre otros), a la experiencia de Leone y Castaño, y al talento de Pérez García de tres cuartos hacia adelante.

Esa base de jugadores seguirá esta temporada, potenciada por la llegada de dos refuerzos: Ignacio Canuto y Ariel Nahuelpán.

Canuto llegó para ocupar el lugar que dejó vacante Norberto Paparatto, el experimentado defensor que luego de varios años en el club decidió probar suerte en el fútbol de Estados Unidos.

Nahuelpán, en tanto, viene con la intención de convertirse en el referente de área que el equipo necesita, y que extraña desde a partida del Chino Luna.

De todos modos, en ese puesto sobra competencia: el ex Nueva Chicago deberá pelear un lugar con Pablo Vitti y José Sand, quien tras su flojo paso por Racing, tampoco pudo recuperar durante el torneo pasado el nivel que tuvo en Lanús.

En cuanto a los amistosos, hubo buenas y malas: el Matador le ganó a Newell´s, a All Boys y al Sub 20 de Chile, y perdió con Banfield y Lanús, en el Sur.

PARA TENER EN CUENTA: La meta de Tigre será lograr la permanencia en Primera y repetir, al menos, la campaña del semestre pasado.

Vélez Sarsfield: Otro ídolo, otro título

BUENOS AIRES -- Vélez Sársfield prolongó la senda de sus éxitos de la mano de José Oscar Flores al conseguir en el verano la Supercopa Argentina frente a Arsenal, y buscará continuar sumando títulos. Con goles, juego vistoso y 6 títulos, el Turu construyó para sí entre 1990 y 1996 la idolatría que le profesan los ciudadanos de El Fortín. Desde el 7 de enero de 2014, cuando comenzó su etapa como entrenador, su misión es continuar la obra de Ricardo Alberto Gareca, quien no sólo era su superior en el banco, sino que también es un reconocido hincha del club desde siempre.

En los 5 años que Gareca lideró al equipo de Liniers, Vélez enriqueció sus vitrinas con 4 títulos más. El Tigre se constituyó en el conductor más sabio y ganador de la historia del club después de Carlos Bianchi (6 títulos -3 nacionales y 3 internacionales- en 4 años). Por ese motivo la etapa que se inicia tiene el aroma que caracteriza a las transiciones. Por un lado, ilusión y renovación. Por otro, incertidumbre y misterio. Aunque el nuevo título le da mayor tranquilidad y confianza para trabajar al Turu Flores.

Flores (42) afronta su primera experiencia como técnico principal después de haber sido el asistente de Gareca (55) en el último lustro. El plantel había solicitado a la directiva que se decantara por él como primer entrenador porque se conocen desde 2009. De ahí la apuesta del mánager Christian Bassedas y el presidente Miguel Calello. Elección que recuerda en parte a la del FC Barcelona por Josep Guardiola en mayo de 2008. La búsqueda de un preparador que conozca la filosofía del club, que haya ganado títulos con el equipo en su etapa como futbolista, y con el que no se modifiquen la idiosincrasia ni el estilo de juego que lo han hecho cada vez más grande.

En lo futbolístico, el equipo de la V azulada no se apartará de su forma de jugar. Va a priorizar el juego corto para llegar al arco rival con la pelota dominada. Los cambios en algunas posiciones llegarán de modo progresivo. No de forma inmediata. Flores es demasiado joven y el grupo que va a comandar está consolidado. No se espera que opte por apurar la jubilación de algunos jugadores veteranos para dar la alternativa a jóvenes que pugnan por insertarse en el primer equipo, porque necesitará del apoyo de los líderes del vestuario para desandar su camino.

Un vestuario que se quedó sin uno de esos referentes (Federico Insúa) y perdió otro jugador siempre importante en el esquema de Gareca (Francisco Cerro). Mientras tanto, Vélez insiste en el secreto que le ha llevado a continuar ganando desde que Carlos Bianchi inaugurara el ciclo de éxitos del club en 1993. Recurrir al fuego sagrado de la cantera para alimentar el primer equipo.

El tercer puesto en el Inicial 2013, el calendario apretado (jugará la Copa Bridgestone Libertadores), y la flamante victoria en la final del la Supercopa Argentina son un gran aliciente para el capítulo que comenzará el 7 de febrero cuando reciba a Tigre en el estadio José Amalfitani.

PARA TENER EN CUENTA: El envión anímico que resultó para Vélez ganar la Supercopa Argentina (disputó la gran final de la temporada frente a Arsenal, campeón de la Copa Argentina, en San Luis y lo venció (1-0) con gol de Tito Canteros), le permite al club de Liniers arrancar a lo grande la nueva etapa con José Oscar Flores como DT, y continuar con logros importantes. El Fortín sumó en el verano su 15to título en 21 años, una cosecha espectacular.

Delgado se perfila titular en Central

ROSARIO -- El defensor de Rosario Central Rafael Delgado se perfila como titular para el debut en el Torneo Final, frente a Quilmes, en el sur del Conurbano bonaerense.

El marcador lateral dejó atrás una fuerte molestia muscular y en la semana logró trabajar a la par de sus compañeros, por lo que el domingo jugaría en lugar de Elías Gómez.

El encuentro se jugará a partir de las 17 a puertas cerradas a causa de la sanción que recibió Quilmes por los incidentes que se produjeron en el Torneo Inicial frente a River Plate.

De no mediar imprevistos, Central saldrá a la cancha con Mauricio Caranta; Paulo Ferrari, Alejandro Donatti, Lisandro Magallán, Delgado o Gómez; Hernán Encina, Nery Domínguez, Jesús Méndez, Federico Carrizo; Carlos Luna y Gonzalo Castillejos

Predictions: Your Essential Checklist for the 2014 Primera División

That time is finally upon us, ladies and gentlemen. After months of staring forlornly at the television while we slowly cooked in summer sun (and let’s face it, power cuts meant you were probably staring at a blank screen. There is no shame in it, admit it), it is back.

I am, of course, talking about the 2014 Final tournament, the upcoming season of Argentine football that starts with a vengeance this Friday. Excited? You had better be!

Football writers like to think they know everything about their given sports. Just take a look at the usually pitiful success rates of most predictions, however, and you will see the truth. As much as we like to think we are the masters of the game, what we really excel in is analysis and strapping on the hindsight glasses after the game itself. Predictions have a nasty habit of biting us in the rearend, which is why this column is steering well clear.

What we will do, though, is try and make the game a little more fun for newcomers to the crazy world that is Argentine football. With a little help from esteemed colleague Sam Kelly, I have compiled a list of certain events you could well be seeing over the next four months of action. They range from the mundane to the bizarre, but all are within the realms of possibility.

Take a look at the list, cut out and keep, play Argentine football bingo with your friends, clean up after your dog with the list; use it however you see fit. First person to complete the checklist will get a prize from me!*


In the first game River Plate lose, Ramón Díaz complains about the refereeing.

In the first game Boca Juniors lose, Carlos Bianchi complains about the refereeing.

Media uses the term paso a paso as soon as Racing Club manage to win two games in a row.

Argentinos Juniors coach Claudio Borghi is filmed smoking away in the dugout, during press conferences, anywhere he can get a sneaky pucho (a cigarette.)

Sports newspaper Olé uses a questionable coffee pun when referring to a Colombian player.

After two games, at least two coaches will be rumoured for the sack.

After five games, at least three coaches have left.

Whenever Vélez or Lanús win, the words ‘Model club’ appear everywhere.

Martín Palermo will be linked to almost every vacancy, apart from those teams fighting relegation.

For the teams fighting against relegation, Ricardo Caruso Lombardi will be announced as their savior.

Ramón Díaz is suspended from the River bench, leaving gormless son Emiliano to look hilariously out of his depth ‘directing’ the team for a game.

Juan Román Riquelme plays one scintillating game, leading all to state that the Boca wizard is back.

In the next game, Román is injured and misses the rest of the season.

At least one of Carlos Bianchi and Ramón Díaz to be ‘en duda’ by the time the Superclásico comes round. If Boca and River are both playing like Barcelona and fighting neck-and-neck for the title, it’ll be whichever of them is just behind on goal difference.

The Superclásico itself is a massive disappointment like always, but that won’t stop newspapers talking about it for three months before and the same time afterwards.

One derby is accompanied by a club commentator who completely loses it, such as this Gimnasia fan reporter last year:

A young star shines for three matches, is immediately labeled the ‘Next Messi’.

A middling Primera journeyman performs above-average. The media and public demands he displaces one of those fancy-pants prima donnas playing overseas in the Argentina World Cup squad.

Any Primera footballer tells cameras, “it’s a long season”, when it really is not.

A promising young talent gets caught in a nightclub/ speeding/ posing with a gun, and it’s put down to ‘youthful high-jinks".

The barra brava of a struggling club decide to lend a helping hand by going down armed to training and scaring the bejeezus out of players.

Nobody has a clue when any teams are playing due to endless tinkering with the schedule.

A referee decides to make himself the centre of attention by preening like a peacock in the middle of the pitch. An ill-advised press conference will probably follow. Mr Lunati, we’re looking at you.

A close friend confides to you that they would rather their team lifted the 2014 Final than Argentina the World Cup.

You come to accept this thinking as both completely outrageous and perfectly normal.

A Botinera/WAG wannabe strips down to her smalls in the stand, in order to ‘support’ the team.

TV cameras immediately zoom to said wannabe, and indeed any other attractive young girl in a way that should have the operator put on a register.

Fútbol para Todos seamlessly replace their inappropriate political endorsements during commentary with inappropriate product endorsements during commentary.

Halfway through the season you wonder why you watch Argentine football rather than the Premier League, before remembering those games are shown at 10:30am on Saturday and you’ve only just got home.

You embrace this new nocturnal regime (of course you do, Dracula), and by the end of the season are screaming for your adopted club to take home the gold.

Colombians make a note at the beginning of the Argentine tournament

A large group of foreign players will be playing in the 2014 Argentine Clausura which begins on Friday. The list is led by many Colombian players.

As has become customary in recent years, the Argentine championship has once again become a ´stepping stone´ for players who seek recognition with the idea of ​​being transferred to a larger market, such as Europe.

Colombia has made great contributions to Argentine football, with several names that earned their place in history such as Radamel Falcao García, Juan Pablo Angel, Mario Yepes, Mauricio Serna, Oscar Cordoba, Jorge Bermudez, Ivan Cordoba and Gerardo Bedoya.

Ecuador will provide two names for Velez: Danny Bazan and Jairo Cedeño. Peru gives two players to Argentinos Juniors: Giancarlo Gambetta and José Carlos Fernández.

And there will be room for three players with a European passport: David Trezeguet (Newell´s Old Boys), champion with France 1998 WC, Mauro Camoranesi (Racing), winner with Italy at the 2006 WC, and the Swiss Dylan Gissi (Olimpo), son of an ex-Estudiantes player.
