Costa Rica Primera Division Wrap: Alajuelense edge towards Herediano

Alajuelense are just a point behind Costa Rica Primera Division leaders Herediano thanks to their win on Saturday.

Oscar Ramirez´s side put the pressure on Herediano with a 3-1 win over Santos de Guapiles drawing them level on points.

Herediano were unable to collect three points against Cartagines on Sunday, held to a 0-0 draw away from home.

Alajuelense took just four minutes to break the deadlock in front of their home fans at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto.

Jose Ortiz powered a right-footed finish into the bottom corner in a one-on-on with goalkeeper Adrian De Lemos after being put through by a headed pass.

The lead was doubled eight minutes before half-time thanks to Johan Venegas, who was left unmarked to head in a corner from six yards.

The hosts struck again nine minutes into the second half as Osvaldo Rodriguez slid in to poke in a cross at the back post.

Things went from bad to worse for the visitors on 64 minutes when Javier Loaiza was shown a straight red card.

Despite being down to 10 men, Santos de Guapiles pulled a goal back through Kevin Fajardo, who volleyed in at the back post with 11 minutes remaining.

While Alajuelense are a point behind Herediano, Santos de Guapiles sit eighth after six matches this league campaign.

Deportivo Saprissa extended their unbeaten run to five matches with a 2-1 victory at home to Puntarenas, who had goal-scorer Luciano Bostal sent off late on.

Belen Siglo XXI were also reduced to 10 men in their 2-0 win at Carmelita, Limon edged UCR 1-0 and Perez Zeledon and Uruguay played out a 1-1 draw.

Venezuela Primera Division Wrap: Zamora wins again

Zamora continued their winning ways in the Venezuela Primera Division as the tight battle at the top continued.

Inmer Gonzalez struck an 87th-minute winner for Zamora, leading them past Atletico Venezuela 2-1 on Friday.

The league leaders are two points clear of Trujillanos and Deportivo Tachira, while Tucanes and Mineros de Guayana are just a point behind them.

Zamora were on track for their fourth win in six league matches when they won a penalty for a handball.

Pedro Ramirez tucked the spot-kick into the bottom corner seven minutes before half-time.

Luis Salmeron headed in a 59th-minute equaliser for Atletico Venezuela but they were unable to hold on.

Substitute Gonzalez delivered the winning goal with a powerful finish with the outside of his right foot.

Irwin Anton scored a hat-trick in Trujillanos´ comfortable 4-1 victory at home to Estudiantes de Merida.

Anton struck twice in the opening 16 minutes and just after the hour-mark to put the hosts in control.

Freddy Arrieta and Freddy Carlos de Castro were on the scoresheet after Anton´s heroics.

Deportivo Tachira snatched a late 1-1 draw at Tucanes, while Mineros de Guayana battled past Deportivo Petare 2-1.

Deportivo Anzoategui were 2-0 winners over a 10-man Atletico El Vigia and Carabobo edged Aragua 1-0.

Chile Primera Division Wrap: Colo Colo thrash Union Española

Colo Colo maintained their three-point lead atop the Chile Primera Division with a 4-1 thrashing of Union Espanola on Sunday.

Hector Tapia´s men remain unbeaten through six matches and their fifth win of the campaign came in comfortable fashion.

Jaime Valdes struck either side of Esteban Paredes´ late first-half effort at the Estadio Santa Laura-Universidad SEK.

Gustavo Canales pulled a goal back for the hosts before Mauro Olivi restored Colo Colo´s three-goal lead late on.

Valdes put Colo Colo on track when he opened the scoring in Santiago de Chile in the 10th minute.

With his fifth goal in the league this season, Paredes doubled the visitors´ advantage in first-half additional time.

Valdes´ effort on 63 minutes sealed the three points despite Canales giving the home side hope, and Olivi added another with three minutes remaining.

Dario Bottinelli´s 90th-minute goal saw Universidad Catolica keep the pressure on the leaders with a 1-0 win at Cobresal.

Eduardo Farias was sent off on 28 minutes for Cobresal but they continued to deny Catolica until the final minute.

O´Higgins and Palestino are third and fourth respectively after playing out a 1-1 draw with both goals coming in the final half-hour.

Deportes Iquique made it back-to-back wins thanks to Exequiel Benavidez, whose 84th-minute goal saw them past Huachipato 1-0.
