Guzmán: "Uno se ilusiona siempre con pelear la Copa Libertadores"

BUENOS AIRES -- El arquero de Newell`s Old Boys de Rosario, Nahuel Guzmán, admitió el martes que la ilusión de volver a pelear la Copa Libertadores de América está latente aunque, a la vez, advirtió la dificultad del grupo 6 en el que el próximo jueves le tocará debutar ante Atlético Nacional en Colombia.

"Uno se ilusiona siempre con pelear la Copa Libertadores, sería un sueño poder ganarla", expresó Guzmán antes de emprender viaje hacia Colombia donde el jueves debutarán ante Atlético Nacional.

El conjunto rosarino llegó hasta la semifinal en la edición pasada, instancia donde perdió con Atlético Mineiro de Brasil, que luego se consagró campeón tras ganarle la final a Olimpia de Paraguay.

"La llegada de Ever (Banega) renovó las expectativas pero todos sabemos lo complicado que es este torneo. Nos tocó un grupo difícil y por eso iremos partido tras partido con paciencia para hacer lo mejor posible", agregó el Patón en diálogo con la prensa en el aeropuerto de Ezeiza.

El equipo dirigido por Alfredo Berti integra el grupo 6 que fue denomido el de la "muerte" ya que lo completan el mencionado equipo colombiano, Gremio de Brasil y Nacional de Uruguay, todos alguna vez campeones del certamen.

"Jugar una copa internacional es importante para todos. El otro día el equipo funcionó bien, ojalá podamos sostener el juego", indicó el arquero en referencia a la presentación en el torneo Final con empate (0-0), como local, ante Boca Juniors.

Newell`s visitará a Atlético Nacional de Colombia el jueves desde las 23.30 en el estadio Atanasio Girardot de la ciudad de Medellín, con arbitraje del chileno Julio Bascuñán.

Better late than never for Fernandinho

Small events can detonate chain reactions. In the case of Fernandinho, a little slip while putting in a cross during a Man City training session, the day before a Premiership encounter with Chelsea, created a personal storm: a muscle injury on his left leg that City doctors deemed serious enough to sideline the midfielder for a month.

It was time enough to compromise not only the Brazilian´s hopes of taking part in the juicy Champions League encounter with Barcelona next Tuesday, but also to jeopardize his hopes of getting a Selecao call-up for their last official friendly before the World Cup, against South Africa, on March 5th.

Last week, however, City medical department revised their diagnosis and Fernandinho could as well be used by Manuel Pellegrini for Barcelona´s visit. And this Tuesday, the midfielder´s smile grew a bit larger when Selecao manager Luiz Felipe Scolari announced his name among the 16 Europe-based players selected for Brazil´s trip to Johannesburg.

It´s his first national team call-up since February 2012 and his maiden one of Scolari´s reign. For many fans and analysts of the game, it was overdue, but his late nod could prove to be the most important of his seven caps.

"Every announcement week I looked at the news expecting to see my name there. When it didn´t come up I just thought I needed to keep on believing and working hard and my time would come. Scolari has the group pretty much defined but I knew I could still get a nod," he explained to ESPN FC.

The case was obviously helped by the fact the Brazilian moved from Ukraine to England last summer and by how he hit the ground running at Eastlands following his 30-million-pound arrival. Much as Shakhtar Donetsk playing regularly European football has increased exposure of Ukraine-based players, it makes a world of difference when one becomes part of one of the most-talked squads of the 2013-14 season.

"I am very proud of what I achieved at Shakhtar and grateful for the opportunities the club has given to me. We gave some more established European clubs a hiding and that UEFA Cup win in 2009 is one of my fondest memories. But it was time for me to test myself at one of the Big Leagues, though coming to England would not immediately get me into the Selecao, that´s for sure," Fernandinho argues.

While the Selecao have struggled with depth in positions like left-back and centre-forward, there has been a profusion of midfielders, especially ones fitting the more enforcer-type defensive roles. Since the Confederations Cup, Paulinho and Luiz Gustavo have been omnipresent in call-ups. More recently another long forgotten name, Lucas Leiva, seemed in pole position to form the "reserve line" with Hernanes. None have been named for the South Africa game, though the absence of the injured Liverpool man comes hardly as a surprise.

"There´s a lot of good players for my position in Europe and that´s delightful for the Selecao. But it also makes it quite difficult to get into the squad, which is why the biggest challenge is always to get the next call-up."

Fernandinho is hardly a newcomer. He appeared with certain regularity under former manager Mano Menezes and famously relegated the promising Paulo Henrique Ganso to the bench in a friendly against Germany in 2011. Unfortunately, Brazil were toyed with by Bastian Schweinsteiger and Co., flattered by the 3-2 score in Stuttgart. "There were a few times I was used in different positions with Menezes and I felt a bit out of place. That prevented me from playing to my full capacity. Hopefully I will get a chance now to help where I can do it best," the Brazilian expects.

He might need a similar pact to the one he and teammate Yaya Toure devised at City. As both players are never shy of a good run forward, they talked and talked when Fernandinho arrived at Eastlands. It was important they understood each other quite well so they could indeed function as the juggernaut duo they were meant to be at the heart of City´s midfield. Even if just for a few minutes at Soccer City, it will be especially interesting to see how Fernandinho functions alongside the also rampaging Paulinho.

"Yaya and I understand quite early how we could operate for the best of the team. We are very organized and with the style of football City play we need to be. We happily tell one another ´OK, it´s time for you to bomb down [toward goal],´" laughs Fernandinho.

Relieved that his injury scare seems to have become a much less serious problem -- he was gutted to have missed the Chelsea game and to see City´s unbeaten run terminated by Mourinho´s men -- Fernandinho was a happy man on Tuesday. He reckons he could be available for selection for the Barcelona game, which would be welcome news to Pellegrini and City fans at a time the team is wobbling without Samir Nasri and Sergio Aguero.

"I want to be ready in case the Mister needs me," he said. But by the end of our conversation, Fernandinho is more worried about fulfilling a more immediate commitment.

"My son David wants to play a bit of football outside. He will get cross if I don’t go right now!"

Dudu finalises move to Gremio from Dinamo Kiev

Gremio have finalised their 30-man squad for this year´s Copa Libertadores as Dinamo Kiev forward Dudu arrived at the Porto Alegre club on loan for the season.

The Campeonato Brasileiro runners-up, who play their opening continental fixture on Friday away against Uruguay´s Nacional, will be delighted to recruit former Cruzeiro man Dudu, who won the under-20 World Cup alongside Neymar and Lucas in impressive fashion in 2011.

The 22 year-old then went on to gain two caps for Brazil but, like many that leave their homeland at such an early age, has struggled to settle in the Ukraine since a €5million switch in 2011.

Dudu will add to an already stellar Gremio attacking line up that includes Uruguayan Maxi Rodriguez and Brazilian 39 year-old veteran Ze Roberto.

El Salvador initiates under-20 training

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – The El Salvador under-20 men’s national team convened on Monday for its first camp of the year under the guidance of head coach Mauricio Alfaro.

After medical exams, lunch and talk from Alfaro, the team commenced a training session later in the afternoon.

Alfaro was pleased with the efforts of the squad as it prepares for the UNCAF qualifying tournament, which is projected to take place in July.

“The most important thing is that a majority of the summoned players came,” said Alfaro in reference to the fact that 27 of the 32 called-in players were able to reported on time. “They are with desire, enthusiasm and are attuned to what they want.”

The group will work together three times a week during February and March, but Alfaro hopes to add an additional day in April and then have the team full-time in May.

El Salvador finished third at the 2013 CONCACAF Under-20 Championship to qualify for its first-ever FIFA U-20 World Cup. At Turkey 2013, the Cuscatlecos defeated Australia, 2-1, for their first win in an 11-a-side FIFA competition.

Flores: "Tenemos jugadores que saben cómo jugar la Copa"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Vélez, José Flores, afirmó esta madrugada que cuenta con "un grupo de jugadores experimentados que saben lo que es jugar la Copa Libertadores".

Luego del valioso triunfo 1-0 frente a Universitario de Perú, en Lima, "Turu" Flores celebró que Vélez tuvo un comienzo inmejorable en la copa y eso "se valora mucho" porque "hará crecer al equipo".

"El equipo va a seguir creciendo. Tengo un grupo de jugadores experimentados que saben lo que es jugar la Copa Libertadores. No se puede empezar mejor, estamos felices", señaló Flores en conferencia de prensa.

El ex ayudante de campo de Ricardo Gareca precisó que "se valora mucho empezar así", porque les "da fuerzas y hará crecer el equipo. Es muy importante poder ganar el primer partido de visitante".

Flores, una de las figuras del Vélez campeón de la Copa Libertadores de 1994, analizó el rendimiento del equipo y valoró que el "Fortín" logró "imponer su carácter en el campo".

"Controlamos casi todo el partido. Tuvimos el balón y las situaciones. Llegó tarde el gol, pero terminamos tranquilos. El equipo impuso su carácter dentro del campo", concluyó el técnico velezano.

Vargas: "Con el buen equipo que tenemos, veo posible la Champions"

VALENCIA -- Eduardo Vargas, delantero chileno del Valencia fichado en este mercado de invierno, aseguró este miércoles que el equipo está capacitado para alcanzar la UEFA Champions League, a pesar de la diferencia de 13 puntos con el Athletic de Bilbao, que ocupa actualmente la última plaza que da acceso a esta competición.

"Con el buen equipo que tenemos veo posible llegar a la Champions", dijo el futbolista, que admitió que el equipo está centrado en ascender en la clasificación, pero sin olvidar las competiciones europeas.

"La verdad es que la cabeza la tenemos puesta en la Liga y uno siempre está con la ilusión de llegar lo más lejos a la Europa League y luego alcanzar la Champions", comentó el futbolista.

El atacante internacional, además, se refirió a su deseo de hacer una buena recta final de temporada para quedarse en el Valencia la próxima campaña. "La verdad es que estoy muy feliz desde el primer día que llegué. Mi cabeza está en hacer buenos cuatro meses y, luego, ver si es posible quedarme en Valencia", indicó.

Vargas confesó estar "muy contento" por su debut en Mestalla ante el Betis y por el apoyo que mostró la afición durante todo el encuentro a los jugadores.

"Llegué en un momento difícil para el equipo pero no porque llegáramos los nuevos ha cambiado. Ellos quieren ganar y veo a un equipo que se está consolidando", recalcó.

Respecto a su adaptación al equipo, dijo que está trabajando para adaptarse rápido con todos sus compañeros y, en especial, con el valenciano Paco Alcácer, su pareja en el ataque.

"Con Paco (Alcácer) nos estamos conociendo mejor y tratamos de adaptarnos juntos dentro del campo. Es un buen jugador y creo que debo seguir adaptándome con él y con el resto de compañeros", aseguró.

Asimismo, Vargas manifestó que no se considera "un goleador pero siempre intento armar jugadas e intentar llegar al área rival y marcar".

Por último, el internacional chileno habló del Sevilla, el próximo rival del Valencia en Liga. "Sabemos que es un rival directo con muy buenos jugadores y que funcionan bien como equipo. Vamos con la mente puesta en ganar y llevarnos los tres puntos", concluyó.

Erbes, diferenciado. ¿Jugará él o Riquelme?

BUENOS AIRES -- Ya sin la lluvia como protagonista, el plantel de Boca se entrenó en Casa Amarilla, realizando una serie de ejercicios físicos y trabajos tácticos, en la preparación para la segunda presentación oficial del año, ante Belgrano.

Carlos Bianchi puso en cancha un equipo de once integrantes y paró a: Agustín Orión; Hernán Grana, Juan Forlín, Daniel Díaz, Nahuel Zárate; Luciano Acosta, Pablo Ledesma, Fernando Gago, Juan Sánchez Miño; Juan Manuel Martínez, Emmanuel Gigliotti.

La única modificación respecto a los que jugaron ante Newell´s fue el ingreso del juvenil Acosta, en lugar de Cristian Erbes, quien no trabajó a la par de sus compañeros por una sobrecarga.

Dicho puesto sería la única duda de cara al domingo ya que, además de Erbes y Luciano Acosta, existe la posibilidad de que se produzca el regreso de Juan Román Riquelme.

El histórico enganche de Boca continuó con sus ejercicios de preparación y, a 80 días exactos de su último partido oficial (24 de noviembre ante All Boys), no está descartado su regreso.

Mientras tanto, Diego Perotti continúo con sus trabajos de puesta a punto y realizó trabajos de fuerza junto a Sergio Brozzi. El exvolante del Sevilla iría al banco en el partido de la tercera fecha, ante Atlético Rafaela.

Boca jugará ante Belgrano el próximo domingo, desde las 21:30 hs. y con el arbitraje de Germán Delfino. El equipo de Carlos Bianchi buscará sumar de a tres por primera vez en más de tres meses, ya que no gana desde el 10 de noviembre, cuando superó 2 a 1 a Tigre, en un partido correspondiente a la fecha 15 del Torneo Inicial.
