A thousand times Tulio: The man who never gave up

As final chapters go, it perhaps wasn’t quite the glamorous affair he had spent so many years dreaming about.

No Globo television cameras. No Maracanã. No Botafogo shirt. No, this was destined to happen here, on this bumpy scrubland pitch so typical of the footballing hinterland that operates a few levels and a few light years below the glitz of the Seleção.

Araxá vs Maimoré in the second division of the Minas Gerais state championship. A game between two teams even local football fanatics had probably never heard of and never will again. Or rather, wouldn’t have. For at the weekend, these sides’ names were woven into the mythic tapestry of the Brazilian game.

For Túlio Maravilha, nothing else mattered but the numbers. For days and months and years and decades he had counted. One more here. Two more there. Tick followed tock followed tick followed tock. Even if the passage of time had begun to make a mockery of his nickname, he would never admit it.
Even at 44, bones creaking and hair thinning, he was still Túlio the Marvel. And he still had history to make.

His big day was a long time in the making. He could remember the 1980s, the emerald green of Goiás, his first goals. His short-lived spell in Europe. (Even now, he wept when he remembered Sion.)

Botafogo, Corinthians, Vitória, Botafogo again, always adding to the tally. 13 goals in 15 games for the national team. Ever plundering.

But somewhere down the line, Túlio stopped enjoying scoring for scoring’s sake. The siren song of immortality crept into his veins, throbbing through his body until he could think of nothing else but a number. The number. It was neat, round and promised to etch his name into Brazil’s footballing pantheon. 1000. A thousand goals. Pelé, Romário… Túlio.

For years thereafter, scoring still came easy. A scuttling, predatory striker, his knack for being in the right place at the right time served him well. Sure, he was moving in less prestigious circles but goals are goals are goals. One more here. Two more there.

The cluster of years that usually signal a footballer’s retirement came and went, the number still some way off. But Túlio couldn’t stop. He was going to get there, even if it meant resigning himself to the life of a travelling salesman, pitching up in any dead-end town whose football team offered him a few thousand Reais in exchange for a few weeks of (relative) national fame.
The spotlight on Túlio had grown wan, but it still shone enough to make signing him worthwhile.

Not that this arrangement pleased everyone.

In 2012, the coach of tiny Tanabi, Túlio’s 28th club, expressed his frustration that the forward was allowed to commute from his home in Rio rather than being forced to move to the area. “How can a guy just turn up on matchday and play?” he asked. “The president and the city are spending a lot of money, and he’s not the player he once was.”

He has also had other, more forceful critics. Túlio’s talent for scoring has never been in doubt, but his ability to count certainly has been; 18 months ago, when he claimed to have reached 990, Placar magazine totted up the official goals and only reached 655. Túlio had been counting goals in friendlies, commemorative games and amateur football. If he’d been a videogame fan, he’d probably have added those he scored on old versions of Pro Evolution Soccer as well.

The discrepancy, of course, only adds to the storybook aura of Túlio’s tale. In a country whose sporting history is so lovingly embellished by lore and half-remembered fable, the Man Who Built His Own Mountain fits right in. Besides, if Pelé and Romário were allowed to play hard and fast with the rulebook, why not him?

As he scrimped and saved his way towards the fabled gol mil, there was to be one major disappointment. He always planned to reach the landmark playing for Botafogo, the side with whom he felt the strongest emotional connection.

The Rio club appeared happy to grant his wish, signing the then-43-year-old Túlio in August last year and promising to register him to play in the Brasileirão.

But despite notching for their under-23 side and in a low-wattage friendly, he left under a cloud, claiming the club had failed to support his “project”. He was just two goals from his target.

No matter. Good things come to those who wait.

27 minutes played at the Fausto Alvim ground (the word stadium would be pushing it). Araxá are awarded a penalty. Everyone knows who is going to take it. Túlio, wearing shirt number 999, steps up. Nobody wants to see him miss – not even the opposition goalkeeper. The world stops spinning, just for an instant.

He scores.

Everything goes blank. Túlio is lifted aloft by his team-mates. The rest of the game fades into insignificance.

“Mission accomplished,” Túlio swoons afterwards choking back the tears. “This is for all the people who believe in their dreams.”
It wasn’t quite what he had pictured. No Globo television cameras. No Maracanã. No Botafogo shirt. But he doesn’t care. All he cares about are the numbers.

Jamaica bolsters future with strong schedule

MIAMI -- Captain Horace Burrell, President of the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF), believes that upcoming friendly international matches against Switzerland and France will provide tough examinations of the Reggae Boyz.

Jamaica (ranked 81st by FIFA) has set dates with Switzerland (ranked eighth) in Lucerne on May 30, and nine days later against 1998 World Cup host and champion France (20th) in Lille.

Both France and Switzerland will play in Group E at 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, along with Ecuador and CONCACAF’s Honduras.

"These teams are considered giants of European football and are both going to the World Cup, therefore we expect that our Boyz will be severely tested," Burrell told CONCACAF.com. “Both teams have world-class players, but so do Jamaica...so I expect that these match-ups will test not only our Boyz, but also the Swiss and the French as they go into their final phase of preparation before heading off to Brazil."

In their only previous meeting – a friendly -- Switzerland defeated the Jamaicans, 2-0, on March 22, 2007, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Burrell, also a CONCACAF Vice-President, said both games -- along with two others confirmed against Caribbean neighbors Barbados (March 2) and Grenada (March 5) -- will go a long way in preparing the Boyz for Caribbean Cup play later this year.

"Our football is in a major preparation mode,” Burrell reasoned. “First of all, we are looking immediately for the Caribbean play-offs, which is a qualifier for the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

"And of course the Gold Cup is a major priority for us. But critically for us also is that all of these games, plus others we will be pursuing to land, are ultimately aimed at aiding our road to Russia 2018 campaign.”

Jamaica finished last in the CONCACAF Hexagonal with five points from 10 matches.

With three more windows allotted for FIFA friendly matches in 2014 after March 5 --- September 1-9, October 6-14 and November 10-18 --- Burrell intends to make the most of each date.

"Already we have opened discussions with our counterparts to have matches for those dates,” Burrell added. “The plan is to take full advantage of all available windows and any opportunities between.

"We have a new coach who we intend to give every opportunity to establish and shape his team for Russia, and one of the ways to do that, is to give him as many games as possible to see players in different conditions.”

Bermuda’s Wells aims to surpass hometown heroes

HAMILTON, Bermuda -- Tracing the path of your role model can serve as unwanted pressure for most athletes from small countries, but in the case of Nahki Wells, he is using the achievements of his mentors as motivation for success.

The Huddersfield Town and Bermuda forward took the field for his 100th league match on Tuesday, a 3-0 loss to visiting Nottingham Forest in an English Championship encounter.

The defeat is a small setback for Wells, who left his friends and family four years ago for England with dreams of matching the feats of childhood heroes Shaun Goater and Kyle Lightbourne.

Wells told Huddersfield Town magazine, Give Us An H: “Shaun Goater was someone that I aspired to be like, as was Kyle Lightbourne. They both had good careers in England and they proved that it was possible to play at the highest level.”

The 23-year-old joined Huddersfield in January, making a £1.3m move from Bradford City. He has some big boots to fill if in order to emulate Goater.

For Bermuda, Goater scored 32 goals in 36 international outings and also played for several English clubs, most notably Manchester City, where he made 184 appearances and scored 84 goals.

Lightbourne was an English league standout, suiting up for a plethora of clubs including Coventry City, Fulham and Stoke City.

The careers of both players function as an inspiration for Wells.

“My aim is to reach the heights they did and go beyond,” he said. “It will be tough to replicate Goats, but if you don’t set your standards high, you won’t reach them.”

Just as he did with the Bermuda legends, the Terriers striker is hopeful the country’s junior players will aspire to follow his path to professional football.

“Hopefully the young Bermudians can see what I am doing and want to follow in my footsteps,” expressed Wells. “It would be fantastic if they see me as a role model.”

He is still getting used to all the attention since moving into English Championship.

“To be labelled a superstar is strange. All the attention I am getting is a bit weird but it is nice at the same time.”

NOTES: Wells scored two goals in five matches during Bermuda’s 2014 World Cup Qualifying campaign … Wells netted 42 goals in 91 league outings for Bradford City.

Tim Vickery Column: Some considerations on Brazil´s squad to face South Africa

This was the last squad before the 23 for the World Cup are named. So those on the outside who missed out this time (I’m thinking specifically of Kaka) need something very special to happen if they are going to force their way into the World Cup.

Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari found his blend during last year’s Confederations Cup. The pieces of the jigsaw began to fall into place in the warm up friendlies against England and France, and the process continued through the competition. Brazil ended the tournament not only with the trophy, but also with a consolidated group and a team identity.

Since then Scolari has been happy to tinker; the recall of Ramires brings with it the option of a 4-3-3 as a variation on the usual 4-2-3-1; he has had a look at reserve options with both full backs; Willian has been successfully introduced; and bringing back Robinho last time allowed him to have a look at the idea of playing the Milan man in a ‘false nine’ role. What would he appear to be thinking this time?

GOALKEEPER;

When Julio Cesar did not fix up a move during the (European) summer transfer window, Scolari acted fast to cut off speculation, guaranteeing the keeper a place in the World Cup – but in the squad, not the team.

I imagine that at the time he trusted that the situation would be sorted out in January. When yet another window shut with Julio Cesar languishing at QPR, a Plan B for the first choice jersey became unavoidable.

It now seems that his favourite goalkeeper will join Toronto in the MLS. But the season there does not start til the middle of next month. Reading between the lines, there would seem to be an opportunity for Jefferson of Botafogo to make a claim to be first choice – a few months back it is likely that Jefferson was no more than a reserve in the coach’s mind. It will be interesting to see who starts against South Africa.

RIGHT BACK

Rafinha was the surprise selection here, because the excluded Maicon has done well on his recall. Two factors; Rafinha is now getting a game at Bayern Munich, after Pep Guardiola relocated Philip Lahm to the midfield, and the former Coritiba product has showed the dynamic lung power that always made him an interesting example of the Brazilian tradition of attacking full backs.

Moreover, Maicon will be coming up 33 at the World Cup. Might the rigours of the European season have taken the edge off his game by then? Scolari is insuring himself against that possibility by taking a look at Rafinha.

CENTRAL MIDFIELD

The key moment in the development of this team was the introduction of Luiz Gustavo in the holding role. But who is his reserve? In recent squads it has been Lucas Leiva, but the injury to the Liverpool man opened up a space which has been filled, predictably, by Fernandinho of Manchester City.

But there is a doubt about him for the role. Fernandinho is a player of terrific lung power. But primarily what Brazil are looking for in this case is positional sense, someone to sit in front of the centre backs and plug the gaps as they appear across the line. Is he comfortable doing this?

If not, he may still have a chance. The fact that Hernanes has not been called up this time is surely significant. The likely explanation is that Scolari also wants to test Fernandinho in the position of back up to Paulinho, the more attacking of Brazil’s central midfield duo. The capacity to act in more than one function (I can recall Fernandinho playing at right back for Atletico Paranaense) is an important consideration when filling in the final few names of a World Cup squad.

CENTRE FORWARD

Why no Robinho? The Milan attacker has picked up an injury, but should be fit well before March 5th. He did well on his recall last November. So why discard him so quickly?

The answer would seem to be that Scolari has no desire to use the South Africa game to experiment with a ‘false nine.’ He wants to see the real article out there on the pitch, a penalty area target man type, which has always been his preference, all the way back to the days of Jardel at Gremio.

Scolari delayed the announcement of the small domestically based contingent in his squad because he is waiting on the fitness of Fred. Should the hero of the Confederations Cup recover in time, then he will have another chance to lead the line. But Fred, further injury aside, has a guaranteed place in the World Cup squad. But who will be his reserve? Jo, of Atletico Mineiro, who did well when given a surprise chance last year? Perhaps another opportunity for Leandro Damiao, finally cleared to play for Santos? We must wait to see who gets picked for South Africa – and then wait to see how they perform under pressure.

Because there will be pressure on whoever plays at centre forward on March 5th. It will be a duel in Johannesburg for the right to a place in the World Cup – and football history is full of stories of strikers who grabbed a late chance to sneak into the squad, and went on to become World Cup heroes.
