Verón: "La victoria es importante"

LA PLATA -- El capitán y jugador símbolo de Estudiantes La Plata, Juan Sebastián Verón, aseguró que "la vicoria (sobre All Boys) es importante porque siempre nos costó mucho esta cancha".

El crack platense, que hoy retornó al primer equipo, agregó que "hay que seguir mejorando. Hay momentos que nos falta un poco mas de picardía para manejar situaciones".

Y aclaró que "la capitanía a Gil Romero se la dimos después de hablarlo con el Chavo (Desábato) y Mauricio (Pellegrino) porque creemos que los chicos tienen que ir tomando la posta, bancar responsabilidades y empezar a tomar el liderazgo".

El DT Pellegrino dijo por su parte que "es bueno ganar de visitante en una cancha que no es sencilla. Se nos hizo difícil después de la expulsión de Auzqui (Carlos). Ahí­ cambiamos la idea de los cambios y defendimos bien. Fue un partido discreto. Los triunfos generan confianza".

Guido Carrillo se manifestó "contento por el gol. Vi justo el rebote y lo aproveché. Hay un gran mérito de Desábato que la bajó muy bien de pecho. Hubo un gran esfuerzo del equipo y una enorme atajada de Rulli (Gerónimo) en el final, que valió tanto como el gol. Además, jugaron muy bien los dos centrales".

Ricardo Rodíguez: "El empate hubiera sido lo más justo"

BUENOS AIRES -- Ricardo Rodríguez, entrenador de All Boys, se lamentó por el resultado que su equipo consiguió esta tarde en Floresta ante Estudiantes de La Plata (0-1) y destacó que "lo más justo hubiese sido un empate".

"Lo más justo hubiese sido un empate", expresó el director técnico, en la zona de vestuarios, una vez finalizado el partido correspondiente a la segunda fecha del torneo Final.

"Fue un partido cerrado. No se jugó bien. El viento, por momentos, tuvo su incidencia. Ellos (Estudiantes) tuvieron su chance y la aprovecharon", analizó el DT que intentará minimizar los efectos de las numerosas bajas del plantel, a causa de la crisis económica.

"Tenemos un equipo corto, con muchos jugadores jóvenes, debido a las circunstancias que todos conocemos", sostuvo el ex DT de Defensa y Justicia y Atlético Tucumán, entre otras entidades.

"Se nos fueron casi diez jugadores, entre ellos, (Mauro) Matos que fue el goleador del campeonato pasado", continuó lamentándose.

All Boys está con riesgo de perder la categoría y ostenta un promedio de 1,216.

"Tenemos mucha juventud y yo confío en ellos. Hablaremos mañana de los errores que cometimos hoy y ya nos pondremos a pensar en el partido del martes con Velez", dijo Rodríguez.

De cara al proximo cotejo ante el elenco de Liniers, pautado para el martes a las 19.15 en el estadio José Amalfitani, el técnico podrá recuperar al goleador Javier Cámpora, quien ya cumplió una fecha de suspensión por acumulación de tarjetas amarillas.

En tanto, el atacante Agustín Torassa está afectado por una molestia muscular en el cuádriceps y su presencia está en duda.

El plantel albo practicará mañana en el predio de Ciudad Evita, descansará por la tarde y a la noche volverá a la concentración.

Alfaro: "Estoy muy preocupado por esta racha negativa"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Arsenal de Sarandí, Gustavo Alfaro, admitió este sábado que está "muy preocupado por la racha negativa de cuatro derrotas consecutivas", entre el torneo Final, la Copa Libertadores y la Supercopa Argentina, tras la caída, en su estadio, con Vélez Sarsfield por 3 a 1, en un cotejo por la segunda fecha del certamen local.

"Estoy muy preocupado por esta racha negativa de cuatro derrotas consecutivas. Sólo perdimos bien con Estudiantes (1-0, en La Plata, en el debut en el Final). Es que tanto con Vélez (Supercopa Argentina, por 1-0 y 2da. fecha del torneo local, por 3-1) como con Santos Laguna (Libertadores, por 1-0) no merecimos perder", consideró Alfaro.

"Nos está faltando definición, porque generamos las jugadas de gol pero no las convertimos. Y también mejorar en defensa porque estamos fallando seguido. Eso lo hablamos hoy en el vestuario", reveló.

Y continuó: "Muchos de los chicos lloraron por la derrota de hoy. Necesitamos trabajar para recobrar la confianza del plantel", finalizó.

Por último, Julio Grondona (hijo), el presidente de Arsenal, les aplicó el derecho de admisión a varios integrantes de la barrabrava porque en la semana "le exigieron" a los futbolistas ropa deportiva del club.

Pese a que no hubo incidentes, los barras estuvieron cerca del estadio.

Turu Flores: "Marcamos la diferencia con la pelota en el piso"

BUENOS AIRES -- El director técnico de Vélez Sarsfield, Oscar Flores, justificó el triunfo de este sábado de su equipo sobre Arsenal, en Sarandí, por 3 a 1, por la segunda fecha del torneo Final de fútbol, "en el manejo de la pelota a ras del piso".

"La diferencia la marcamos con la pelota al ras del piso, ya que dentro de un partido trabado en el primer tiempo supimos cambiar en el segundo. Y ganamos bien", sostuvo Flores.

"Ellos nos complicaron un poco en la etapa inicial con el juego aéreo, uno de sus puntos fuerte, pero ya en el complemento no", agregó.

Flores, por último, destacó "la capacidad goleadora" del atacante Mauro Zárate, quien marcó dos tantos, y "el muy buen trabajo" del volante Jorge Correa, que anotó el restante. "Jugaron un partidazo", subrayó.

Fabián Alegre: "El futuro es duro"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Tigre, Fabián Alegre, dijo que "el futuro es duro y hay que apretar los dientes e ir para adelante" en alusión a la lucha del equipo de Victoria para mantenerse alejado de los puestos de descenso.

Tigre tiene un promedio de 1,278 y supera a cinco equipos (All Boys, Quilmes, Argentinos Juniors, Godoy Cruz y Colón) en un campeonato que descienden tres.
Alegre afirmó que "Tigre estuvo más cerca que Olimpo. Con lo que tiene fue para adelante. Enfrentamos a un rival corto y agresivo que venía de ganar cinco partidos consecutivos".

También se refirió a una jugada en la que se pidió penal a Joaquín Arzura y comentó que "me dijeron que por televisión se ve que no fue infracción, que se tiró, entonces está bien amonestado. Igualmente, nunca hablo de los árbitros".

Por último, dijo que es conciente "que hay que mejorar" pero que tiene "confianza" porque "desde que llegamos hicimos el 53 por ciento de los puntos".

Bauza: "Necesitábamos este triunfo"

BUENOS AIRES -- El DT de San Lorenzo, Edgardo Bauza, sostuvo que sus dirigidos "necesitaban un triunfo como el obtenido sobre Racing (1-0, en el Nuevo Gasómetro)" y admitió que todavía "le falta crecer como equipo", pese al primer éxito alcanzado bajo su conducción.

"Necesitábamos este triunfo. Y vale por nuestro momento (venía de dos derrotas consecutivas: frente a Olimpo, en Bahía Blanca, por 2-0 y ante Botafogo, por idéntico marcador, en la Copa Libertadores) y el rival", destacó Bauza, en conferencia de prensa.

"Sabíamos que iba a ser complicado, pero salimos a presionar y jugamos unos 25 minutos muy buenos", agregó.

Bauza después reconoció que le cedieron "campo y pelota" a Racing, pero opinó que, pese a eso, "tuvieron cuatro chances claras para definir el partido".

Por último, el entrenador destacó "el gol" de Nicolás Blandi, "el trabajo" del debutante Carlos Valdés y "el juego colectivo" de su equipo.

"Me voy conforme por el triunfo, aunque todavía nos falta crecer como equipo", finalizó Bauza

Merlo, tras caer con San Lorenzo: "No estoy enojado, estoy preocupado"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Racing Club, Reinaldo Merlo, negó estar "enojado" tras de la derrota por 1-0 ante San Lorenzo de Almagro, aunque admitió estar "preocupado" por el traspié de su equipo.

"Estoy preocupado, no enojado", reconoció Merlo en una rueda de prensa en el Nuevo Gasómetro en la que se lo notó molesto, en la que respondió con frases cortas, y en la que su análisis del partido fue bastante escueto.
En cuanto al desarrollo del encuentro, Merlo, quien evitó hacer referencias individuales sobre sus jugadores, afirmó: "El segundo tiempo jugamos bien y erramos cuatro goles".

Además, remarcó que su equipo debe estar preparado para cualquier situación desfavorable que se le pueda presentar.

"No todos los partidos se van a jugar como uno quiere porque el rival también juega. Hay que estar preparado para afrontar alguna circunstancia como la que se nos presentó hoy en los primeros veinte minutos", sostuvo Merlo.

Sambafoot Sunday: Seleção Stereotypes & Chelsea´s Brazilian Blueprint

The English Premier League has seen an influx of Brazilians in recent times. Managers in years gone by may have been put off by Brazilian stereotypes of individual skill over team work ethics, but a string of players have arrived on these shores to expose the myth.

From Juninho Paulista to Lucas Leiva, Brazilian players have eradicated these preconceived ideas, and endeared themselves to English fans with their combination of teamwork, guile, and technical ability.

One team in particular have had great success and considerable output from their Brazilian signings, and after testing the water with the likes of Emerson Thome, Alex, and then Belletti, Chelsea now have a whole host of Brazilian internationals on their books.

José Mourinho is a manager who has little time for luxury signings, as shown by the discarding of the immensely talented but less dynamic Juan Mata, and the group of Brazilian players in his squad serve to dispel any remnants of a false Brazilian stereotype. New signing for the 2013/14 season, Willian, has emerged as a key part of Mourinho’s hard working side, with his pace on the counter attack and intense harrying of the opposition forcing him into the Portuguese manager’s first XI.

Oscar is another midfielder to emerge as a key player in the Chelsea set up, and after a gradual introduction to the side in the 2012/13 season under previous manager Rafa Benitez, he’s now becoming as vital to Chelsea as he is to Brazil. Oscar is a case in point when it comes to eroding the myth of Brazilian luxury players, and during his time in England he’s proven wrong those who thought he might be too lightweight for the cut and thrust of the English league.

There’s no doubting the strengths of Chelsea’s number seven, Ramires. A subtle dink over Victor Valdes in their 2-2 draw away at Barcelona saw his side into the Champions League final of 2011/12, which they went on to win, but Ramires’ game is much more about hard work and running than it is about this type of skill.

Surprisingly, defender David Luiz is the player at Chelsea who most fits the old Brazilian stereotype. He has a tendency to wander from his centre back position, and also has a habit of switching off when undertaking his defensive duties, but despite this he played an important role in midfield during Chelsea’s recent league victory away at a formidable Manchester City side.

It’s here where the similarities between Chelsea and the Brazil national team become apparent. When you watch Chelsea’s Brazilians, you begin to see how their set-up might transfer across to The Seleção, and despite the philosophies of the two managers differing slightly, the formation and use of personnel is almost identical.

Replace Eden Hazard with Neymar and Samuel Eto’o with Fred, and Chelsea begin to look very similar to Brazil’s Confederations Cup winning side. A combination of individual talent and tactical nous, the Brazil team which beat the stars of Spain in that final, were set up in a similar manner to the Chelsea side which went to Manchester City and won.

In the past both sides may have parked the proverbial bus against an opposing team of stars, but in these two examples Brazil and Chelsea took the initiative and were the driving forces in these games, both in and out of possession.

Here’s a look at how Brazil could line-up in relation to Chelsea. This takes into account the two games mentioned above, and how a Scolari Brazil side could replicate Morinho´s Chelsea set up. The numbers used represent the positions on the pitch using a Brazilian numbering system, rather than the players actual squad numbers.

New Copa Libertadores brings familiar problems

A week ago, a TV cameraman was killed in Rio when a flare struck him during a demonstration. A year ago, a young fan was killed by a flare in Bolivia in a Copa Libertadores game.

Attempts are now being made to keep these dangerous pyrotechnics out of South American stadiums. Persistent offenders have been Universidad de Chile of Santiago, one of the best supported clubs in the continent. There were flares in evidence two weeks ago when "la U" took on Guarani of Paraguay in the qualifying round of the Libertadores. The Chileans were warned; repetition could have serious consequences, such as the closing off of the stadium´s main stand for international club games for a two-year period.

Last Thursday, "la U" began their group campaign at home to Defensor of Uruguay. The club mounted a big security operation. A list was announced of fans whose past conduct meant they were banned from entry. At entry points, searches were carried out to try to stop flares getting in.

But inside the last ten minutes of the game, "la U" finally broke the deadlock, Gustavo Lorenzetti, their Argentine attacking midfielder, volleying home a fine goal from the edge of the area. And there, behind the goal, a flare was lit in celebration.

Now, the club are facing the threat of punishment. But perhaps the most salient point was the reaction of the rest of the stadium. The vast majority of the crowd appeared to jeer the appearance of the flare, while some around it attempted to put it out. It would seem clear, then, that the threat of punishment has had an educative effect -- which, of course, it how it should be. Any action taken by CONMEBOL, the South American Confederation, should surely take into account the way that most of the fans reacted.

And there was another problem for CONMEBOL from the opening week´s action in the group phase of the Libertadores. It happened in the visit of Brazilian champions Cruzeiro to Real Garcilaso of Peru.

In the second half Cruzeiro introduced Tinga, a veteran midfielder of obvious afro-Brazilian descent. As the game wore on, every time Tinga picked up possession the stadium would erupt in monkey noises. This disgraceful show of racism -- all the more galling in a land where, from Teofilo Cubillas to Jefferson Farfan, many of the best players are black -- clearly cannot go unpunished. But what should the punishment be?

In the normal way of events, this would be easy. Real Garcilaso, the host club, should pay the penalty. But in this case the circumstances are more complicated. Garcilaso are from Cuzco. Their city is currently without a stadium which has floodlights, meaning that the Cruzeiro match was switched to Huancayo, some 800 kilometres away.

Garcilaso are a new club, only founded in 2009. They have made remarkable strides in such a short space of time -- last year, in their Libertadores debut, they produced the best performance from a Peruvian side since 1997. But their support base, naturally, is still relatively small. It is very unlikely that the stadium in Huancayo last Wednesday night contained more than a few hundred Garcilaso fans. The vast majority, it would appear, were from the Huancayo region, and presumably are supporters of the local clubs.

There is a clear case for obliging Garcilaso to play their next home game behind closed doors, but to concentrate punishment upon them would be to miss the point. This is obviously a problem far wider than the supporters of one club.

Perhaps the most depressing element of the whole sad story is this; the people of the highland regions of Peru, including Cuzco and Huancayo, are themselves the victims of historic discrimination. But instead of showing a natural and human sympathy for others in a similar situation, on Wednesday night in Huancayo at least, they sought another target on which to take out their derision.

The answer would appear to lie in an anti-racist initiative in Peruvian football, where the threat of punishment exists in domestic games as well, working alongside measures aimed at winning the debate and re-educating the supporters.
