Saturday: Colon actually WIN and San Lorenzo edge Racing – All of the matches

It may well be too little too late but Colon ended a 15 game winless streak by defeating Claudio Borghi’s, Argentinos Juniors last night. Gabriel Graciani’s brave second half header was their first goal in over 9 hours and was enough to give Colon a 1-0 win.

In the Nuevo Gasómetro, San Lorenzo kickstarted their season with a 1-0 win over Racing. Following defeat to Olimpo and then further Libertadores woes, Nicolas Blandi’s acrobatic winner was crucial and serves as a little wake up call for Racing.

Velez Sarsfield impressively defeated Arsenal in Sarandi with Mauro Zárate at the centre. His two goals set Velez on the way to a 3-1 win and continued Arsenal’s sluggish start.

Estudiantes, with Juan Sebastian Veron back in the side claimed another 1-0 win, this time, away to All Boys and finally Olimpo stretched their undefeated run to 6 games with a goalless draw in Victoria against Tigre.

All Boys 0 – 1 Estudiantes

A second 1-0 win continued Estudiantes perfect start to the Torneo Final although after having Carlos Auzqui sent off midway through the second half they were made to work for it.

A dull first half provided few talking points except perhaps the return of Juan Sebastian Veron to the Estudiantes midfield.

The decisive goal came after halftime when Nicolás Cambiasso in the All Boys goal could only parry Jonathan Schunke’s shot and Guido Carrillo was quickest to react.

Minutes later, Estudiantes were reduced to 10 men when Carlos Auzqui was sent off and so with All Boys desperate for points the pressure mounted.

Estudiantes defence held firm aided by the superb, Geronimo Rulli in goal and hung on to their slender lead. All Boys can ill afford too many home games like this if they are to avoid being sucked into the Nacional B.

Arsenal 1 – 3 Velez Sarsfield

Mauro Zárate and his strike partner, Lucas Pratto showed just how valuable they are to Velez in Sarandi as the deadly duo linked up to help Jose Flores’ side to their first 3 points.

Arsenal have started the season slowly, with losses in the league and the Libertadores and once again they were second best.

Zárate gave Velez the lead minutes after the interval after Pratto pulled the ball back for him to slot past Cristian Campestrini and minutes later, the same pair combined to double the lead. Pratto drove down the left and his low cross was expertly flicked by Zárate, with the outside of his boot into the net.

For the third, it was Zárate who turned provider. His cross found Jorge Correa unmarked and he rifled his shot into the bottom corner.

Arsenal then lost Damián Pérez after a rash challenge on Agustín Allione prompted Pablo Lunati to go straight for his red card and although Mariano Echeverría pulled one back late on it was another bad day for Arsenal.

Tigre 0 – 0 Olimpo

Olimpo’s form in Bahia Blanca is not in question and if they continue to win their home games and pick up points away then their safety will not be in doubt.

Tigre were the better side in Victoria but were frustrated by a resilient Olimpo side who are now unbeaten in 6 matches.

San Lorenzo 1 – 0 Racing Club

The Torneo Inicial champions, San Lorenzo started their season last night in the Nuevo Gasómetro with a clásico victory over Racing and in many ways it was reminiscent of how they won the title.

New signing, Nicolas Blandi gave El Ciclon an early lead with a wonderful, improvised volley after Matías Cahais failed to deal with a cross from the left.

The combination of Piatti and Correa threatened but Racing, with a new belief under Mostaza Merlo had their chances.

However, like in the Torneo Inicial on several occasions, Sebastián Torrico saved San Lorenzo and kept their lead intact. Superb saves from Luciano Vietto and Mauro Camoranesi ensured El Ciclon earned their first 3 points after the disappointment of the opening day loss to Olimpo and Copa Libertadores defeat.

For Racing, there were still positives but after last weekend’s easy win, the result serves as a timely reality check.

Colon 1 – 0 Argentinos Juniors

After 15 matches without a win and 9 hours without a goal, Colon were due a break and even though their relegation fears are still very much real, they were able to celebrate a win over relegation rivals, Argentinos Juniors.
Gabriel Graziani scored the only goal of the game when he chased a ball over the top and managed to beat Pablo Migliore to it and head into the unguarded net.

The promising sign of fight will bring some hope to Colon but for Argentinos it is a step back following their opening day win over Godoy Cruz. Claudio Borghi still has plenty of work to do.

New Atlético Mineiro defender Nicolás Otamendi delighted to play with Ronaldinho

Atlético Mineiro’s new loan signing Nicolás Otamendi has revealed that he is delighted to have the opportunity to play with Brazil legend Ronaldinho.

The future of Ronaldinho was uncertain for a prolonged amount of time but his decision to renew his contract with Galo appears to have helped them sign Otamendi.

The Argentine defender has spoken to Lance about how he has enjoyed his time with the club so far.

Otamendi said: “I chose to serve a big club, champion of the Libertadores. Firstly, to have a great player like Ronaldinho. I am delighted to be here.

“He is a great player. I’ve seen him before via television, now to train with him. It’s something unique, he is a very humble and quiet player. I would like to play with him and win titles.”

The on-loan Valencia defender should get the opportunity to play with Ronaldinho this evening in Galo’s derby match against rivals Cruzeiro.

He is targeting success with Atlético and wants to try and help his new club retain the Copa Libertadores.

Otamendi’s loan is due to end before the final of the South American event but he still wants to help his new team as much as he can.

He added: “Today I am here and I will work to help us get as far as possible (in the Libertadores). I want to play in the semi-finals, my loan will finish after but it does not matter.

“Everyone would like to play in the Libertadores final.”

The curious case of Guillermo Varela

Guillermo VarelaMuch was made of Manchester United’s summer transfer window debacle, and although it was the £28million deadline day capture of Marouane Fellaini that made the headlines, the club’s first signing of the David Moyes era was that of Guillermo Varela, a largely unknown Uruguayan right-back.

After impressing the club on a two-week trial, Varela was snapped up on a permanent deal in June from Club Atlético Peñarol, for a reported fee of just under £3million. With the dream of following in the footsteps of- and eventually displacing- fellow South American full-back Rafael da Silva, the 20-year-old arrived at Old Trafford and was handed the number 30 shirt. By securing a first team squad number, many expected him to feature on the fringes of Moyes’ side during this campaign.

However, Varela has struggled to make his desired impact at Old Trafford, and although a regular starter for Warren Joyce’s under-21 side, he is yet to make his first-team debut for Manchester United.

Things went from bad to worse for Varela in early January, when his parents were both involved in car accident in their native Uruguay. The full-back was granted compassionate leave by United and was allowed to return to Montevideo to spend time with his family. Due to the timing of this incident, it was widely speculated in the press that he may re-join former club Peñerol on loan, in order to be closer to his mother and father. However, this move never materialised and Varela shortly returned to Manchester to resume under-21 duties.

A star of Uruguay’s under-20 World Cup 2013 squad, who narrowly missed out on winning the competition after a penalty shoot-out defeat to France in the final, Varela once again impressed on his return to United’s U21 side on Monday night against West Ham. A threat going forward and solid defensively, Varela had a hand in United’s opening goal and was a thorn in the Hammers side throughout the night.

With Manchester United’s first team defensive mishaps very much under the spotlight at the moment, it was a performance that David Moyes would find very difficult to ignore- in fact, maybe he simply can’t afford to.

This season United’s right-back slot has been hotly debated, with first choice Rafael coming under increasing criticism from the Stretford End. His twin brother Fabio has now departed for a starting role at Cardiff City, and the position has been filled by make-shift cover including Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, and even Antonio Valencia, all of whom would prefer to be plying their trade elsewhere on the field.

Although the 2014 World Cup will be undoubtedly too soon for Varela, the full-back may well have an eye on being involved in the 2015 Copa America, of which Uruguay are currently holders. With United’s defence under more scrutiny than ever, their shortcomings may just create an opportunity too good to be missed for the young man from Montevideo.

SATURDAY: WINS FOR CRUZ AZUL, TOLUCA, LEON AND ATLANTE – ALL THE GOALS

Cruz Azul left it late but Marco Fabian’s wonder goal ensured another win for La Maquina as they defeated Puebla 1-0 and maintained their undefeated start of the season. The control, turn and then the vision and execution of the lob were worthy of winning any match but the 19 points taken from a possible 21 is even more impressive as Cruz Azul begin to look formidable.

Toluca kept on the coat tails of Cruz Azul with a comfortable 3-0 win in Veracruz. Edgar Benítez latched on to a through ball with the assistance of a static Veracruz defence after just 5 minutes and slotted in the opener. Moments after the break, Isaac Brizuela doubled the advantage following further nice build up and with minutes remaining Pablo Velázquez pounced on a defensive mistake to fire in a third. Toluca have lost just once as they keep pace with Cruz Azul and pull away from the rest. Veracruz, on the other hand, are languishing near the foot of the table with the worst defence in the league.

Monterrey slumped to another defeat inside the Estadio Tecnológico to a resurgent Leon side, who look to be putting their less than certain start to the season behind them. The sending off of César Delgado made life difficult for Los Rayados and before the break Los Esmeraldas took full advantage. Elías Hernández carried the ball unchallenged before unleashing a venomous long range strike which flew past Jonathan Orozco and in off the post just a minute before the break. After the interval with Monterrey pushing forward, Leon hit them on the break to wrap up the points. A long ball over the top released Mauro Boselli and he expertly lifted the ball over Orozco. The bad start to the season caused frustration among the locals and there were some ugly scenes as fans clashed with the police but one message became clear: Victor Manuel Vucetich is wanted back at Monterrey.

Atlante kept their hopes of survival alive with a slender 1-0 win over Pachuca thanks to Roberto Carlos Gutierrez’s scrappy first half goal. Gutierrez was one-on-one with goalkeeper, Oscar Perez and although his initial effort was saved the ball bounced kindly back off him allowing him to slot in the only goal of the game. The win cuts the distance between themselves and Atlas at the bottom of the table but it will count for little should Atlas get something from their game with Pumas.

Finally, the match between Jaguares de Chiapas and Tigres offered almost nothing so the least said the better. Tigres are still looking for the first win and sit at the bottom of the table. Ricardo Ferretti’s side look woeful and completely devoid of any invention but perhaps the onus was on Chiapas to attack. Instead Los Jaguares looked timid and unwilling to commit anyone in attack.
