D´Onofrio: "Sería una lástima castigar a 50 mil hinchas por un imbécil"

BUENOS AIRES -- El presidente de River, Rodolfo D´Onofrio, afirmó este jueves que "sería una lástima" que sancionen al club "por culpa de un imbécil" que arrojó un pedazo de madera al defensor de Godoy Cruz Leandro Grimi y pidió que el eventual castigo sea para el agresor.

"Hay casos y casos (en relación con las sanciones que recibieron Vélez y Boca, entre otros clubes). Sería una lástima castigar a 50.000 hinchas por culpa de un imbécil. Hay que expulsar de a uno a estos tipos, para que los millones podamos disfrutar", sostuvo D´Onofrio en declaraciones al canal TyC Sports.

Grimi festejaba el gol del triunfo de Godoy Cruz en el estadio Monumental cuando un pedazo de madera de la platea Belgrano impactó en la parte superior de su espalda.

"Estamos rastreando las imágenes para identificarlo y aplicar la sanción máxima que nos permita el estatuto de River", precisó D´Onofrio, quien dejó en claro que pretende expulsarlo del club. El titular de la entidad de Núñez explicó que una vez "identificado hay que lograr que esta persona no ingrese nunca más a un estadio de fútbol".

Y luego, al abordar nuevamente la posibilidad de una sanción, remarcó: "Yo espero que esto no ocurra porque sería una lástima culpar a 50.000 personas por un imbecil".

River podría recibir una sanción del Comité de Seguridad Deportiva y debería cumplirla el domingo 2 de marzo frente a San Lorenzo, en el partido correspondiente a la quinta fecha del Torneo Final.

Injured Cavani in Uruguay squad

Edinson Cavani has been included in the 23-man Uruguay squad to face Austria next month, despite suffering from a hamstring problem.

The Paris Saint-Germain striker has not played for his club since suffering the injury in a 2-0 win over Bordeaux at the end of last month, but Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez has included him in the party to travel to Austria for a friendly on March 5.

On Tuesday, PSG confirmed that Cavani would return to first-team training soon, and so may be fit to line up next month as his country begin their preparations for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

After the friendly in Klagenfurt, Uruguay´s next friendlies will both be at home in Montevideo, against Northern Ireland and Slovenia, on May 30 and June 4 respectively.

Tabarez´s side have been drawn in Group D for the finals, alongside England, Italy and Costa Rica and Cavani is seen as key to their hopes of winning the tournament for a third time.

They will be hoping history will repeat itself this year, their last victory also coming on Brazilian soil in 1950, when they shocked the hosts 2-1 in the final.

Uruguay´s record cap holder Diego Forlan (107) and record goalscorer Luis Suarez (39) are also in the squad.

O’Higgins snatches late victory to top Libertadores group

Domestic league reigning champion records its first Copa Libertadores win in 34 years with 1-0 defeat of Deportivo Cali.

A late Yerson Opazo goal handed domestic title-holders O’Higgins a deserved victory against Colombian side Deportivo Cali as the club recorded its first win in the Copa Libertadores for 34 years and jumped to the top of its group.

Many O’Higgins fans at the Estadio Monumental on Wednesday were not even alive when their side last tasted victory in the continental competition — April 22 1980, when “La Celeste” overcame Paraguayan side Sol de América with a 2-0 win. For the remainder, that night — and the taste of top flight South American football — is all but a distant memory. Before this year, the last time O’Higgins qualified for the Copa Libertadores was 1984.

After holding defending champions Lanús to a goalless draw in its return to the competition last week, an air of nervous expectation surrounded the team and its supporters as the players warmed up, with fans identifying the home tie against Deportivo Cali — yet to record a win in its domestic league — as a golden opportunity to end this long wait.

However, it quickly became apparent that victory would be far from straightforward as “La Celeste” fans watched midfielder Andrés Pérez unpick their side’s defense, stretched by the athleticism of powerful winger Jhon Viáfara.

Despite enjoying plenty of possession, the hosts struggled to dictate the tempo and create opportunities for themselves. Classy midfielder Pablo Hernández rose to the away side’s challenge, but he was too often surrounded by teammates lacking dynamism in their movement and precision in their passing.

Having soaked up the pressure in a goalless opening period, the home side began to impose itself on the game in the second half as it searched for a long-awaited victory.

The visitors, for their part, seemed happy to get men behind the ball and play for a draw, an approach demonstrated by the less than subtle time wasting employed by goalkeeper Faryd Mondragón at every opportunity.

One O’Higgins fan had his own answer to Mondragón’s ploy, directing a green laser light into the goalkeeper’s eyes as he prepared to defend a free kick from the edge of the box early in the second half.

The home side came close to finding the net without such help — striker Pablo Calandria drew a fine save from Mondragón with a header soon after the break and was later unfortunate to see his left-footed strike hit the post in the 55th minute.

Estadio Monumental, the ground which O’Higgins currently shares with Colo Colo, grew increasingly restless as the hosts toiled against their stubborn opponents. While the club awaits the completion of a new 20,000 capacity stadium in its hometown of Rancagua due in March, fans have adopted the black and white Colo Colo seats as their own.

Singing tirelessly, they hung banners and stamped vehemently on seats as they tried to impose their identity on the stadium, but none of this could hide the sense of longing for a return to their own fortress from which to urge their players to find an extra gear.

However, such sentiments were temporarily forgotten eight minutes from time as defender Yerson Opazo initiated an intense celebration which lasted until the final whistle and beyond. While his teammates filled the box, awaiting a cross as he lined up his free kick, Opazo instead whipped a low shot in at the near post, outwitting Mondragón and giving his side an invaluable three points.

O’Higgins manager Eduardo Berizzo declared himself happy with the result.

“We played with clear heads and a lot of patience,” he told Terra Chile. “I’m pleased with how the team played. It was a solid performance.”

The victory marked O’Higgins’ 13th game unbeaten in all competitions and sent the team to the top of Group 3, ahead of its home encounter with Paraguayan side Cerro Porteño on March 13.

Merlo probó dos defensas diferentes

BUENOS AIRES -- Con las bajas confirmadas de Fernando Ortiz y José Luis Gómez, durante la mañana de jueves, Reinaldo Merlo ensayó variantes en la línea defensiva, de cara al partido que Racing disputará en la noche del sábado ante Arsenal.

Con José Luis Gómez descartado por una distensión muscular grado uno del musculo semimembranoso del muslo izquierdo y con Fernando Ortiz suspendido tras la expulsión ante Tigre, el entrenador deberá cambiar media defensa y para ello probó siete nombres diferentes.

Por un lado, la primera prueba se basó en posicionar a Yonathan Cabral, Gastón Campi, Esteban Saveljich y Matías Cahais, todos habituales defensores centrales que le darían al equipo un gran poder en el juego aéreo.

Más tarde, tres de esos nombres fueron reemplazados y la defensa quedó conformada por Ismael Quílez, Esteban Saveljich, Gabriel Miglónico y Claudio Corvalán.

Cabe destacar que de dichos ensayos no participó Luis Ibáñez, habitual lateral por el sector izquierdo, ya que debió abandonar la práctica y concurrir a realizarse estudios médicos por una molestia en el muslo izquierdo.

Seguramente, durante el ensayo a puertas cerradas del viernes por la mañana, "Mostaza" determinará los once iniciales para la tercera presentación de Racing, en sólo siete días.

Racing y Arsenal se entrenarán el próximo sábado desde las 20:30 hs. con el arbitraje de Darío Herrera. Cabe recordar que el conjunto de Gustavo Alfaro venció a la "Academia" en los dos enfrentamientos entre ambos en 2013 (1-0 en Sarandí y 2-0 en Avellaneda).

Reported Inter Milan target Carlinhos only interested in signing new Fluminense deal

Fluminense full-back Carlinhos has play down claims that he is set for a move to Europe by insisting that first of all he would like to sign a new contract extension with his current club.

Reports have emerged linking the 27-year-old with a move to Italian giants Internazionale, however he rejected talk of a move away from Brazil when speaking to reporters.

Football Italia quoted the Flu defender who reaffirmed his happiness, adding: “To be sought after by a great European club shows that I have worked in the right way.

“I have previously had the opportunity to move to Europe, but I preferred to stay at Fluminense, where I am happy and where we are talking to extend my contract.”

Carlinhos did briefly discuss what might happen should his contract not get extended and admitted he needs to say little about Inter Milan because everybody knows their pedigree in football.

The Brazilian concluded: “In the event that this is not an option, I am sure that the parties would analyse the possibilities for all. I do not need to say anything about Inter because everyone knows their value in world football.”

Lucas Melano vuelve a concentrarse con Lanús

BUENOS AIRES -- El delantero Lucas Melano, recuperado de un esguince de tobillo, fue convocado por primera vez en 2014 por el DT de Lanús, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, con miras al duelo del próximo sábado ante Vélez, para el que no figuran en la nómina los defensores Maximiliano Velázquez, Carlos Izquierdoz y Carlos Araujo.

Melano, de 20 años, jugó oficialmente por última vez el 15 de diciembre pasado ante Newell`s (2-2) por la fecha final del torneo Inicial, ya que luego en un amistoso de pretemporada ante Platense el 20 de enero sufrió la lesión en su tobillo derecho, de la que recién ahora está recuperado en su totalidad.

En cambio, los que quedaron al margen por diferentes dolencias fueron los defensores Velázquez, quien se perderá su segundo partido consecutivo por una molestia en el posterior derecho, e Izquierdoz, quien padece un golpe en la cadera y más tarde le realizarán estudios para determinar la gravedad de su lesión.

En cambio, la baja del lateral Araujo se debe a que recibió la quinta tarjeta amarilla en la derrota de ayer ante Estudiantes de La Plata (2-1) y por eso deberá purgar una fecha de sanción.

Así, la nómina de convocados para el cotejo ante Vélez, a desarrollarse el próximo sábado desde las 17 por la cuarta jornada del torneo Final es la siguiente:

Mercier: "De a poco el plantel va captando el mensaje de Bauza"

BUENOS AIRES -- El volante de San Lorenzo Juan Mercier, termómetro de la temperatura futbolística del equipo en la mitad de la cancha, aseguró que el grupo "de a poco va entendiendo el mensaje del técnico (Edgardo) Bauza".

"De a poco el plantel va captando el mensaje de Bauza. No lo puedo comparar con (Juan Antonio) Pizzi porque siempre sostengo que `cada maestrito tiene su librito`", subrayó Mercier en una entrevista con el programa radial "Deportivo Télam".

"Y en lo personal estoy muy contento porque también estamos aceitando la dupla que formábamos en Argentinos Juniors con (Néstor) Ortigoza", amplió.

San Lorenzo venció el miércoles justamente al equipo de La Paternal en el estadio Diego Armando Maradona, que tantos recuerdos le trae al Pichi.

"La verdad que me resulta muy placentero volver a Argentinos, porque allí viví momentos muy lindos y fui campeón. Eso lo llevaré siempre conmigo", confesó.

"Y en San Lorenzo estamos atravesando un buen momento que debemos disfrutar, porque de a poco va a apareciendo el equipo como todos pretendemos", reflejó.

Después de caer sucesivamente en las dos presentaciones de principio de año, tanto por Copa Libertadores ante Botafogo como por el torneo local frente a Olimpo (en ambos casos de visitante y por 2-0), el Ciclón enderezó el rumbo en el Final enhebrando dos victorias al hilo (1-0 sobre Racing y 2-0 con Argentinos).

"Estamos ante un calendario muy apretado, ya que si entresemana no jugamos por el torneo local, debemos hacerlo por Copa Libertadores, así que debemos estar tranquilos y bien descansados", describió.

"Pero atención que hicimos una buena pretemporada, así que no podemos poner como excusa el cansancio por la doble competencia", advirtió.

En el juego frente a Racing convirtió Nicolás Blandi y en la víspera lo hizo Mauro Mattos, los dos centroatacantes con los que se reforzó San Lorenzo en este mercado de pases veraniego.

"Es muy bueno que los delanteros anoten, porque eso le genera tranquilidad al resto del equipo, ya que lo que se genera detrás de ellos da sus frutos", apreció.

El próximo compromiso de San Lorenzo por la cuarta fecha del Torneo Final tendrá lugar este fin de semana en el Nuevo Gasómetro, ante el Quilmes de Ricardo Caruso Lombardi, embarcado de lleno en la lucha por la permanencia.

"De Caruso Lombardi tengo muchos recuerdos y me dejó muchas cosas como jugador. El fue quien me trajo a San Lorenzo. Por eso siempre le voy a estar reconocido", remarcó Mercier en la conclusión de la charla.
