Flamengo beat Resende to move to the top of the Campeonato Carioca table

Jayme de Almeida is now looking forward to Wednesday´s clash - Action Images
Saturday’s 3-0 victory moved the Rubronegro to 25 points and virtually guaranteed them qualification to the final phase of the competition.

Flamengo coach Jayme de Almeida with the victory but is likely to be hoping that Fluminense slip up against Botafogo on Sunday as that would leave his side with a clear advantage at the top of the standings.

“Since the start of the championship we’ve been trying to be up there at the top. There are other teams like Vasco and Fluminense but we’re trying to do our part. We will see what happens on Sunday but I think we’re doing well and getting the points we should be. We’re close to qualifying,” he said.

Almeida hopes that his side repeat their strong performance when they meet Emelec of Ecuador in Wednesday’s Copa Libertadores clash.

“The team played well and this will give us confidence on Wednesday. It won’t be an easy game but if the team performs as expected, stays relaxed and works well with the ball then we’ll create a lot of opportunities.”

Fluminense left shocked by Botafogo in Carioca

Fluminense suffered a major setback to their Carioca championship hopes with an unexpected home loss to Botafogo on Sunday evening, a result which leaves them three points behind leaders Flamengo after ten rounds of the league.

Home advantage, coupled with the fact that the visitors had announced a slightly weakened side, led many observers to beleive that Fluminense would win this encounter at a stroll. However, the Maracana was left shocked by three away goals, including two in the space of a couple of minutes in the second half.

Botafogo went in at the break 1-0 to the good thanks to Henrique´s strike and the same man doubled their lead after 65 minutes. Argentine Bolatti sealed the three points two minutes later to leave Flu on 22 points and the joyful visitors seven points behind.

Vasco Da Gama lose at home to Cabofriense

Vasco Da Gama lost pace at the top of the Campeonato Carioca after a humbling 2-1 home loss to Cabofriense on Sunday evening, a result which leaves them four points behind their opponents and seven behind league leaders Flamengo.

With the visitors having impressed in the state championship so far, this game was anything but a foregone home win, but few would have expected such a final result at the Regatas.

An early Vasco goal courtesy of 31 year-old striker Edmilson was cancelled out and then bettered before half-time, thanks to strikes from Francisco Para and Fabricio Carvalho.

The result leaves Vasco in dire need of winning their next Carioca fixture, away to Madureira on Thursday evening.

Scolari’s striking problem leaves Brazil in a quandry

Just four months ahead of the World Cup, Luiz Felipe Scolari is in a pretty good place. Confidence is high in the Brazil squad, with a number of in-form players – Willian, Fernandinho, Ramires – having replaced the dead wood that lurked amid the glory of last summer’s Confederations Cup win.

The fans are united. It could even be argued that the tangle of issues surrounding Brazil’s logistical preparations for the tournament are playing into his hands, deflecting the glare of public attention away from his charges.

He has just one problem. Unfortunately, it’s a fairly major one. He hasn’t got any strikers.

Fred, the Fluminense forward, is Scolari’s first choice, and understandably so. His performances last summer showed that, for all the doubts about his game, he can lead the line against the best sides. An instinctive plunderer with the physical presence to hold the ball up, he proved the ideal foil for Neymar, Oscar and Hulk, who seemed to relish roaming around a fixed point in attack.

But Fred got injured just after the Confederations Cup and didn’t play again for the rest of 2013. He is now making tentative steps for Flu, but form and fitness still look some way off; he hasn’t scored a goal at any level for six months. Scolari will wait for his talisman, of course, but the signs don’t look especially positive at the moment.

Former Manchester City flop Jô is likely to be in the squad, having shone for Atlético Mineiro over the past year and proven himself a capable back-up for Fred. But most would feel uneasy about heading into the World Cup with him as first choice, not least because he seems better suited to being a physical Plan B for when more direct football is required.

After those two, things drop off worryingly. Leandro Damião, once seen as the great white hope for the Brazil frontline, endured an underwhelming 2013 and hasn’t pulled up any trees since joining Santos in the off-season. Some are even calling for Scolari to consider Walter – a talented player but one who midway through last season weighed 96kg.

There is one name missing in all this, of course. Alexandre Pato, in Europe at least, has long been viewed as the natural heir to Brazil’s attacking throne, despite the injuries that marred his career in Europe. His reputation, until very recently, preceded him; when it became clear he was keen on a return to his homeland, Corinthians didn’t hesitate to stump up a staggering £12.4 million for his services.

But Pato has been woeful in the last year, going weeks and months at a time without scoring and otherwise running around like a lost boy. Increasingly, he is being seen as a charlatan – a player carried along by a global standing he did little to earn in the first place.

This was certainly the thrust of an opinion piece written by former Seleção forward Tostão last week, which described Pato as a “fragmented” footballer. “There’s a disconnect between his technical ability and his movement and positioning,” mused the Cruzeiro idol. “He’s divided in parts that never come together.”

A move to São Paulo may improve things; his toxic relationship with the Corinthians faithful can hardly have made him feel welcome there, after all. But the chances of him making a late charge for a World Cup spot look remote.
Scolari, then, is left with little option but to cross his fingers for Fred. If the former Lyon man doesn’t make it, he may feel forced to shunt Neymar further forward – a move that hasn’t proven especially successful in the past. With judgement day looming, it’s a headache the Seleção chief could do without.

Tirsdag står derpå Libertadores-bold her i Belo Horizonte.

Botafogo Beat Fluminense 3×0 in Rio: Daily

Botafogo beat Fluminense 3-0 to move closer to a semi-final spot.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Botafogo’s reserve team comprehensively beat Fluminense 3-0 yesterday afternoon in the Clássico Vovô at the Maracanã Stadium. A brace from Henrique and a superb volley from Argentine midfielder Bolatti helped the Alvinegro climb to sixth place in the table, while Fluminense remain three points behind Flamengo at the top of the Campeonato Carioca.

Encouragingly for Botafogo coach Eduardo Hungaro, the superiority of his players was underlined by the fact that every single starter yesterday was not first choice. Hungaro opted to rest his first-team ahead of this week’s Copa Libertadores tie away to Union Española of Chile, for which the club will fly out later today.

The match started in bizarre fashion, with Flu goalkeeper Diego Cavalieri booked before a ball had even been kicked. The international stopper marked the middle of the goal on the six yard line, and the referee absurdly produced a yellow card for defacing the pitch.

From the kick-off, Botafogo were the better team. Renato forced Cavalieri into a smart save before Flu launched a counterattack of their own. Fred put the ball in the back of the net but his effort was correctly ruled out for offside. That was about as good as it got for Fluminense.

Just after the half-hour mark, Henrique opened the scoring with a scorching effort from the edge of the area. Fred had another goal correctly chalked off as the Tricolor did not manage to respond to Botafogo’s dominance throughout the first half.

Both sides made changes at the break, with Gabriel coming on for Botafogo and Wágner entering to add more creativity to the Flu midfield. Nense had few chances before coach Renato Gaúcho sent on Walter to try and bring the scores level. A goal did indeed come. But it was a second for Botafogo.

Jorge Wagner’s long-range drive deflected into the path of Henrique, who steered the ball past Cavalieri for his and Botafogo’s second. Just two minutes later, Bolatti met Junio Cesar’s left-wing cross with a stunning volley to complete the scoring. There was still time for Fred to confound Fluminense’s misery with a missed penalty. The side’s humiliation was complete.
