Argentina Primera Division Wrap: Colon continue impressive start

Colon´s impressive start to the Argentina Primera Division´s Torneo Final continued on Sunday with a 3-1 win over River Plate.

Gabriel Graciani notched a brace for Colon, who moved to nine points and second position in the Primera Division table.

The Santa Fe-based club have never won Argentina´s top tier of football but after claiming their third consecutive victory on Sunday, Colon are only behind Godoy Cruz on goal difference.

Graciani put Colon in front in the 17th minute at their Estadio Brigadier General Estanislao Lopez, when he ran onto Cristian Sain´s pin-point pass over River Plate´s defence and then lifted the ball over Marcelo Barovero before being crunched by the visiting goalkeeper.

Colon doubled their lead in the 71st minute when substitute Martin Luque produced a mazy run from the left wing, cutting inside one defender and holding off another marker before converting through Barovero´s legs.

River responded almost immediately with Fernando Cavenaghi poking the ball home after a fine run and pass from Manuel Lanzini.

But Colon secured the victory with three minutes left when an unmarked Graciani finished off Luque´s cross to the back post.

Colon are one of four teams on nine points, with Godoy Cruz (plus five goal difference), ahead of them, while Estudiantes and San Lorenzo trail the second-placed club from Santa Fe on goals scored.

Velez Sarsfield, Atletico Rafaela and Rosario Central sit in the next three positions with seven points each.

Gonzalo Castellani´s hat-trick saw league leaders Godoy Cruz to a convincing 3-0 win over Rosario Central.

Estudiantes lost 1-0 at Boca Juniors on Sunday with Emmanuel Gigliotti scoring the winner for the home side, while San Lorenzo defeated Quilmes by the same scoreline thanks to a goal from Ignacio Piatti.

Velez Sarsfield slumped to a 3-2 loss at Lanus, who had Oscar Benitez score a brace, while Atletico Rafaela were thrashed 4-1 at Newell´s Old Boys.

In other matches, All Boys edged Olimpo 1-0, Arsenal beat Racing Club 3-1, Tigre drew 0-0 against Argentinos Juniors and Gimnasia La Plata and Belgrano played out a thrilling 2-2 draw.

Liga MX roundup: Cruz Azul extend winning streak

True winners rise to the challenge when tested. That´s exactly what happened to Liga MX leader Cruz Azul versus Queretaro as the two clubs opened the weekend matches.

Los Cementeros won their seventh consecutive match, but Los Gallos Blancos made them sweat for it. Ricardo Da Silva scored for Queretaro in the 25th minute, but just over 10 minutes later, Rogelio Chavez equalized with a cool, calm penalty kick. In the 42nd minute, Mauro Formica hit a great shot from the top of the Queretaro box to put Cruz Azul ahead. Late in the game, Chavez shut the door with a second goal -- an opportunistic strike from midfield that caught goalkeeper Edgar Hernandez off his line. It says something about the strength of Cruz Azul that some of the team´s best goals are being scored by defenders. La Maquina now boasts 22 points to lead the league.

For all that Cruz Azul is setting the pace, however, Toluca is keeping pace just a step behind. Yet against Chivas, the win was a tight one. The match was scoreless until the 89th minute, when Isaac Brizuela, who has been on a tear for club and country of late, struck a low, stinging shot from outside the box that beat Jose Antonio Rodriguez. Brizuela´s goal pushed Toluca to 19 points, good for second place in Liga MX.

The difference between one season and the next is often a fresh start for a struggling team or a letdown for a team that was previously a powerhouse. That was highlighted in Saturday´s match between Pumas and Club America. Looking lost without former coach Miguel Herrera, Las Aguilas lost 3-1 to UNAM Pumas. Even with the return of Rubens Sambueza to the roster, Club America could manage only one goal, scored by Raul Jimenez. Daniel Luduena had a pair of goals, and Roberto Daniel Ramirez scored to secure the win for Pumas as well as third place in the table.

The Club America cause wasn´t helped by Francisco Rodriguez earning a red card in the 49th minute. He is going to have to show more discipline in his international play to persuade Herrera to keep him on the Mexico roster.

With a 3-0 victory over Morelia, Pachuca has quietly climbed into the ranks of the Clausura 2014 contenders. Enner Valencia led the way with two goals, with Jurgen Damm also contributing a goal. Enrique Meza’s squad has steadily improved this season. Pachuca could be entering the second half of the season in top form.

Of all the matches on Saturday, perhaps the biggest surprise was that Tigres garnered its first victory of the year against Veracruz. Jesus Alberto Duenas was the hero with the lone goal of the match. Tigres now moves to 15th in the table while Veracruz takes the place of Tigres as the worst club at this point in the season. The win may have come at the perfect time for Tigres’ embattled coach Ricardo Ferretti, who has had a disappointing Clausura so far, to say the least.

The most entertaining match of the day had to be the 4-2 game between Leon and Santos Laguna. The good news for the Laguneros was that Oribe Peralta finally scored. The bad news was that it hardly mattered, mostly because Leon was already cruising with a four-goal cushion. Elias Hernandez, Matias Britos, Carlos Pena and Miguel Sabah all scored for Leon in the first half before Santos Laguna woke up and got two goals in the second half to make the final tally more respectable. With the victory, Leon moves into seventh place, just inside the safe zone of playoff-bound teams. With only 10 points, Santos Laguna is just outside of that group.

Though not last in the league, Atlas is still flirting with relegation. Saturday’s 1-0 loss to Monterrey didn’t help. Luis Antonio Silva did the damage for Los Rayados, but the main problem for Atlas was the inability of its players to generate chances.

Atlante, however, is still likely to be the team relegated at the end of the season. The 0-0 result versus Puebla didn’t convince anyone that Atlante is about to turn things around and make a run up the league table this season. Coach Pablo Marini may be resigned to the outcome of relegation at this point.

Champions respond when tested, but for those that fail the test, only regrets are left. With the second half of the season now imminent, none of the teams in Liga MX want to look back on Clausura 2014 and think about what might have been. The time for excuses and settling into the season has passed. Now the race is on in earnest to make the playoffs.
