International Friendly Preview: Costa Rica v Paraguay


Costa Rica will look to end a three-game losing streak with improved firepower when they host Paraguay in San Jose on Wednesday.

In their past three internationals, Costa Rica have failed to score, losing 1-0 to Australia, 4-0 to Chile and 1-0 to South Korea.

But in all three of those matches, neither captain Bryan Ruiz nor leading striker Alvaro Saborio have played - the last two players to hit the back of the net for Costa Rica.

Ruiz and Saborio both scored in Costa Rica´s 2-1 win over Mexico in October last year.

Saborio has the most goals (31) of any of Costa Rica´s active players but remains well adrift of all-time goal-scorer Rolando Fonseca (47).

Costa Rica coach Jorge Luis Pinto has picked a strong squad with the likes of Joel Campbell, who scored for Olympiacos against Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League last week, Celso Borges (AIK Stockholm), Junior Diaz (Mainz) and Christian Bolanos (Copenhagen).

Pinto´s team will come up against another out-of-form side with Paraguay winless in three games too.

Paraguay lost their last three World Cup qualifiers after knocking off Bolivia 4-0.

That win against Bolivia was followed by a 5-2 thrashing at the hands of Argentina, a 1-1 draw in Venezuela and a 2-1 loss to Colombia.

Paraguay did not qualify for Brazil 2014 but should provide Costa Rica with a tough hit-out in one of Pinto´s last opportunities to look at his players before naming a squad to go to the World Cup.

In the past two meetings between the two countries, Paraguay has won both times, knocking off Costa Rica 2-0 in a friendly in 2010 and 1-0 in the 2004 Copa America.

Paraguay´s chances of victory will likely rest on the shoulders of experienced trio Nelson Valdez (Olympiacos), Cristian Riveros (Gremio) and Victor Caceres (Flamengo).

Ecuador Primera A Wrap: LDU Quito break stalemate streak, Catolica beat Manta

LDU Quito enjoyed a 3-0 win over Deportivo Cuenca to move within four points of Ecuador Primera A leaders LDU Loja.

With the top four teams in Ecuador´s Primera A out of action this weekend, LDU Quito and Universidad Catolica took full advantage with their first victories in four matches - with the former snapping a run of three straight draws.

Catolica defeated Manta 1-0 on Saturday, while LDU Quito cruised past Cuenca to claim fifth spot in the table, just one point behind Olmedo and Independiente del Valle, who sit third and fourth respectively.

Cuenca had conceded seven goals in their previous four games and LDU Quito took advantage of the visitors´ poor defence on Friday.

LDU Quito hit the front three minutes before half-time when right full-back Jose Madrid was found free in the box and he slammed the ball into the net.

It was 2-0 three minutes into the second-half when Felix Borja reacted first to a mistimed shot from Kevin Mercado, collecting the loose ball near the penalty spot and firing it past Cuenca´s hapless goalkeeper.

Enrique Vera completed the home side´s win in the 85th minute with a fine finish on the turn after running onto Luis Bolanos´ chipped pass over Cuenca´s defence.

The win took LDU Quito to 10 points from seven matches, ahead of Catolica and El Nacional, who drew 1-1 with Deportivo Quito.

LDU Loja remain top of the table with 14 points from six games, while Emelec (13 points, five games) sit second ahead of Olmedo and Independiente (both 11 points, six games).

At the Estadio Jocay in Manta, Catolica defeated their hosts thanks to Henry Patta´s sharp finish after 11 minutes.

Patta burst into the left-hand side of the penalty area and slid the ball into the net from a tight angle.

The win ended Catolica´s run of three losses in a row in the Ecuadorian top flight, while in Guayaquil, Barcelona defeated bottom club Mushuc Runa 3-0 with all goals coming in the first half.

Turu Flores afirmó: "Fuimos muy superiores a Boca"

BUENOS AIRES -- El técnico de Vélez Sarsfield, Oscar Flores, afirmó este sábado que su equipo fue "muy superior" en el triunfo sobre Boca Juniors por 1 a 0, en el partido por la quinta fecha del torneo Final de fútbol.

"Hicimos un gran partido y fuimos muy superiores, principalmente en el primer tiempo, en el que merecimos una ventaja más amplia", aseguró el "Turu" Flores.

Y agregó: "En el segundo ellos buscaron lógicamente la igualdad, pero nosotros pudimos haber hecho más goles. El triunfo fue justo".

Flores, además, confesó que está "muy contento" por el juego de sus dirigidos y adelantó que la idea es "pelear" tanto el torneo Final como la Copa Libertadores "si el estado físico de los jugadores lo permite".

"Hoy tuvimos la posesión de la pelota, la manejamos muy bien y, además, contamos con las mejores ocasiones de gol", enumeró.

"No escuché a la gente corear mi nombre. Pero si lo hicieron es porque el equipo juega bien. Vamos a intentar pelear en los dos frentes", finalizó.

Bianchi: "No entiendo por qué el equipo muestra dos caras"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Boca Juniors, Carlos Bianchi, confesó que no entiende por qué el equipo "muestra dos caras", en referencia al rendimiento dísímil entre el primer y segundo tiempo, en la derrota de este sábado contra Vélez Sarsfield por 1 a 0 por la quinta fecha del torneo Final de fútbol.

"Todos sabemos que tenemos que mejorar mucho. En el primer tiempo jugamos mal y en el segundo tuvimos otras ganas y una actitud distinta. Pudimos haberlo empatado. Así que yo también me pregunto lo mismo. No entiendo por qué el equipo muestra dos caras", reveló Bianchi.

"Seguimos sin convertir las situaciones que generamos. Y debemos mejorar también en la ambición, en la malicia, en la agresividad", enumeró.

Bianchi, pese a la derrota, sostuvo que sigue "intacta la idea de ganar el torneo".

Luego el DT de Boca profundizó su análisis. "No sólo (Fernando) Gago está en un bajo nivel. Es un conjunto", opinó.

"Y si Emmanuel (Gigliotti) hubiese hecho ese gol en el primer tiempo (en la triple chance que tuvo ante Sebastián Sosa a los 20 minutos del primer tiempo cuando el partido iba 0 a 0) tal vez el resultado hubiera sido distinto", sentenció.

Bianchi no confirmó si Juan Román Riquelme y Diego Perotti serán titulares el miércoles a las 20.10 (BUE) ante Olimpo de Bahía Blanca, en La Bombonera, por la sexta fecha del torneo Final.

"Si (Juan Román) Riquelme entraba, no le hacía un favor", sostuvo el DT Carlos Bianchi para justificar su permanencia en el banco de suplentes durante todo el partido.

ROSARIO -- El entrenador de Colón de Santa Fe, Diego Osella, aseguró tras el triunfo 1 a 0 ante Rosario Central en el Gigante de Arroyito que su equipo "tiene que sumar puntos" y consideró "secundaria" la forma en que lo haga debido a la apremiante situación en la tabla de los promedios.

Independiente: De Felippe probó a Insúa de doble cinco

BUENOS AIRES -- El DT de Independiente, Omar De Felippe, cambió el sábado el esquema táctico y colocó a Federico Insúa como doble cinco en la práctica realizada el sábado con vistas al partido del lunes próximo ante Independiente Rivadavia de Mendoza, por la 26ta. fecha de la B Nacional.

Además, ubicó al paraguayo Samuel Cáceres como zaguero, desplazó a Claudio Morel Rodríguez al lateral izquierdo, adelantó a Federico Mancuello al carril de ese mismo costado y dejó afuera al volante Martín Zapata.

Saturday: Vélez beat Boca and Colón go top with another win! All the action

Four matches on Saturday and four winners, including two more away wins and a few surprises. Vélez Sarsfield kicked things off against Boca Juniors and thanks to Mauro Zárate’s fifth goal of the season they deservedly and, not so surprisingly, beat Boca.

Belgrano‘s visit to face Atletico Rafaela was not easy on paper and even less so after Juan Eluchans smashed Rafaela in front after 3 minutes. However, having not lost their last 7 Primera matches, Belgrano roared back and goals from Lucas Aveldaño and Lucas Pittinari extended that run to 8 and leaves Belgrano 3 points off the pace.

A pace which is surprisingly set by Colón, who made it 4 straight wins with a hard fought 1-0 win over Rosario Central. Carlos Luque’s excellent solo effort after half an hour and some determined defending sent Colón to the top of the table.

Finally, Argentinos Juniors scored a crucial victory in their relegation battle over Arsenal in La Paternal. Having not won since the opening day, Claudio Borghi’s side were in need of a lift and the influential Leonardo Pisculichi’s brace provided just that.

SATURDAY: AMÉRICA RETURN TO WINNING WAYS AS CRUZ AZUL AND LEÓN WIN AGAIN


With repercussions at either end of the table, Saturday’s results proved once again just how strong Cruz Azul are, while Veracruz’s failure to beat Tijuana at home showed how much they are in the thick of a relegation battle. Meanwhile, wins for title hopefuls, América and León ensure that La Maquina will not become complacent.

Cruz Azul hosting Toluca was the meeting of the top two and another test of La Maquina’s early season dominance. Despite some nervy moments and a bit of luck, most notably when Pablo Velázquez cannoned a shot off the inside of the post, Cruz Azul came through to record their eighth straight victory. With time running out a lofted free kick found substitute, Christian ‘Chaco’ Giménez and he headed the ball past Alfredo Talavera to send the Estadio Azul into raptures.

With Friday’s victories for Atlante and Atlas the pressure was on Veracruz as they hosted a Tijuana side who have won on the road since January 2013. That pressure increased ten-fold when Cristian Pellerano’s deflected effort gave Los Xolos a first half lead, particularly in light of Los Tiburones Rojos toothless attack. Defeat would have seen Veracruz sink to the bottom of the descenso but Liber Quiñones’ late volley ensured a point was enough to stay above Atlante, at least for now.

Another side under pressure were Antonio Mohamed’s América side, who travelled to Monterrey in the knowledge that the last time Las Águilas had lost four consecutive Liga MX matches was back in April 2008. It was by no means vintage América but it will be a huge relief to pick up another 3 points and remain in a good position in the league table. Defender, Erik Pimentel gave Las Águilas the lead with a close range header and the countless chances were squandered to extend the lead either wastefully or halted by the excellent Jonathan Orozco. And so El Turco must have been cursing his luck when Colombian, Wilson Morelo poked in an equaliser with less than 10 minutes remaining. The clock ticked towards the final whistle when wing back, Paul Aguilar burst down the right and his pull back found Ruben Sambueza, who made no mistake in converting the winner. Back to winning ways and up to third but a massive 10 points behind Cruz Azul.

Finally, a dazzling first half performance by Apertura Champions, León blew Chiapas away as they continue to gather pace and recapture their title winning form. With so many willing runners from deep, a confident León are so difficult to defend against and it took just 13 minutes for Elias Hernandez to profit from this style as his run in behind Los Jaguares’ defence went unchecked and he was able to open the scoring. Miguel Sabah then added a second from the influential Carlos Peña’s cut back before Peña released Mauro Boselli to round Alfredo Frausto and roll in the third. With the game won, León simply ensured that there would be no fight back from Chiapas.
