Racing recupera a Gómez e Ibáñez

Venezuela Primera Division Wrap: Mineros bounce back

Apertura champions Mineros de Guayana bounced back on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Carabobo in the Venezuela Primera Division.

Mineros lost 3-0 at Llaneros de Guanare in round seven but responded in the latest round to stay within three points of league leaders Zamora.

Orlando Cordero scored the decisive goal for Mineros against Carabobo, converting the rebound after Angelo Pena´s initial shot was parried by visiting goalkeeper Jose Leonardo Morales.

Mineros, who won their first league title since 1989 when they triumphed in the Apertura campaign, moved to third position in the table with 16 points, one behind Caracas, while Zamora (19 points) remain top of the pile.

Caracas, who finished second in the Apertura season, had their match at Estudiantes de Merida suspended, while Zamora trumped Aragua 2-0.

Juan Falcon scored the opener for Zamora in the 38th minute, while Pedro Ramirez added a second goal just before the hour-mark.

Tucanes, Deportivo Lara and Deportivo Tachira were all leapfrogged by Mineros.

At Lara´s home ground, Heiber Diaz equalised in the second half for the hosts, just two minutes after Tucanes´ Argenis Gomez had opened the scoring in a 1-1 draw.

Deportivo Tachira´s home fixture against Deportivo Anzoategui was suspended.

Trujillanos joined Lara and Tachira with a 3-1 win over Llaneros, while in other results, Deportivo Petare drew 1-1 with Atletico Venezuela, Yaracuyanos won 1-0 over Atletico El Vigia and Deportivo La Guaira defeated Zulia 2-0.

With Cerro Porteno held to a 4-4 draw at Sol de America on Sunday, Libertad finished the third round of the Apertura season leading the Paraguayan league on goal difference.

Libertad led 2-1 at home at half-time and after Rubio Nu had Nelson Ruiz sent off in the 69th minute, the hosts wrapped up victory in second-half stoppage time with a goal from Jorge Daniel Gonzalez.

Pedro Sarabia´s Libertad (seven points, plus four goal difference) moved ahead of Cerro Porteno (seven points, plus three), while Nacional Asuncion sit third after a 3-1 win against Deportivo Capiata.

In Asuncion on Saturday, Libertad hit the front in the eighth minute when Jorge Recalde produced a drag-back and pass to Claudio Vargas, who burst in from the right before slotting his shot under Rubio Nu goalkeeper Jorge De Olivera.

Rubio Nu equalised in the 27th minute when Alfred Mazacotte scored from a corner but the visitors could not keep the score level for the rest of the half with Libertad striker Rodrigo Lopez heading home just before the break.

Ruiz was shown his second yellow card with 21 minutes remaining when he slid in with a high boot and Libertad took advantage of their extra player in the 93rd minute, with Gonzalez playing a one-two with Recalde before expertly chipping De Olivera.

Cerro Porteno were denied the chance to return to first place in the standings on Sunday when Cristian Ovelar converted a 94th-minute penalty for Sol de America.

Sol had led 1-0 and 3-1 against the previous league leaders but looked set to lose when Guillermo Beltran, Daniel Guiza and Julio Dos Santos scored for Cerro Porteno within 16 second-half minutes.

But Ovelar´s late penalty ensured the match finished 4-4 and maintained Sol´s run of draws this season.

Sol have three draws from as many games to sit eighth in the table, while the result ended Cerro Porteno´s perfect start to the campaign.

General Diaz and 3 de Febrero both notched their first wins of the season on the weekend with the former accounting for Guarani 3-1, while the latter won 3-2 over 12 de Octubre.

In the other match in round three, Olimpia drew 1-1 with Sportivo Luqueno.

Costa Rica Primera Division Wrap: Saprissa close in on Herediano

Deportivo Saprissa reduced Herediano´s lead at the top of the Costa Rica Primera Division to just one point with a 3-0 win over Cartagines.

Herediano suffered a shock loss to Carmelita on Sunday and Saprissa took advantage, moving to within a point of the Primera Division leaders.

Three goals in the second half saw Saprissa cruise past Cartagines in San Jose, extending the visitors´ winless run to seven games.

Carlos Saucedo got Saprissa on their way in the 52nd minute and it was 2-0 just two minutes later when David Ramirez struck.

Saprissa had not lost in nine games before Sunday and Diego Estrada ensured it would be 10 matches undefeated when he scored with 11 minutes remaining.

The win took Saprissa to 22 points in second position in the Primera Division standings, leapfrogging Alajuelense (21 points), who had to come from behind twice to claim a 2-2 draw at Perez Zeledon.

In Alajuela, Carmelita rose to fifth position with 15 points after stunning Herediano 2-0.

Victor Chavarria put the home side ahead in the 38th minute, while Carlos Clark´s 67th-minute penalty clinched victory for Carmelita and left Herediano on 23 points for the season.

Uruguay Primera Division Wrap: Fenix move clear

Fenix stretched their lead in the Uruguay Primera Division with a 2-0 win at Wanderers in a top-of-the-table clash.

Rodrigo Rojo and Maximiliano Callorda scored either side of half-time for Fenix, as they moved three points clear of Wanderers at the top of the league standings, while third-placed Nacional lost 3-0 at River Plate to drop four points behind the leaders.

Fenix had been held to a 1-1 draw by Defensor Sporting in round four, which allowed Wanderers to join them on 10 points out in front in Uruguay.

But Wanderers could not stay with Fenix on Saturday with the visitors sounding an early warning to the rest of the Uruguayan top tier.

Despite conceding possession to the home side for most of the match, Fenix were lethal when given the opportunity to shoot, with Rojo converting one of his side´s three shots on target in the 17th minute, while substitute Callorda slotted another with eight minutes remaining.

Fenix moved to 13 points from five matches and a goal difference of plus nine with Wanderers (10 points, plus five) in second.

On Sunday, Jonathan Ramirez, Martin Alaniz and Leandro Rodriguez all scored for River Plate in their comfortable win over Nacional, who lost their second straight match in the Clausura campaign to sit third with nine points.

Nacional´s arch-rivals Penarol, who are set to play their game in hand on Wednesday, sit fourth with eight points from four matches after beating Apertura champions Danubio 2-0 on Saturday.

Defensor Sporting trumped Miramar Misiones 2-1 on Sunday, while Liverpool thrashed El Tanque Sisley 4-1.

In other results, Racing defeated Cerro 2-1, Juventud cruised to a 3-0 victory at Rentistas and Cerro Largo edged out Sud America 1-0.

Chile Primera Division Wrap: Leaders win, O´Higgins stunned

Huachipato stunned O´Higgins in the Chile Primera Division, while league leaders Colo Colo held on for a 3-2 win over Cobresal.

O´Higgins dropped to third in the table after their shock loss at Huachipato, who claimed a second consecutive victory to rise to 13th.

Huachipato had lost three in a row before last week´s 1-0 win over Nublense and again tasted victory on Saturday thanks to Francisco Arrue´s 25th-minute penalty.

Despite taking 11 shots to Huachipato´s seven, O´Higgins could not find an equaliser and the hosts held on for the three points.

That left O´Higgins seven points adrift of Colo Colo, who had to survive a nervous few final minutes against Cobresal.

Colo Colo took the lead on Friday in the 10th minute when Esteban Paredes struck his seventh goal in his past six matches, running onto a long ball and guiding a left-footed shot into the net.

Cobresal equalised from the spot in the 24th minute after the referee spotted a handball in the box with Ever Cantero converting the penalty but, two minutes into the second half, Colo Colo took the lead again in controversial circumstances.

Juan Delgado´s header from a corner was saved by Cobresal´s Leonel Cuerdo but the hosts´ midfielder followed up and stabbed out of the goalkeeper´s hands and into the net.

Despite the visitors´ protests, the goal stood and Colo Colo extended their lead with 26 minutes left when Felipe Flores won the ball from Cobresal defender Wladimir Herrera converted past Cuerdo.

Although Lino Maldonado struck in the 90th minute for Cobresal, the visitors were unable to find an equaliser and Colo Colo held on for their sixth win in a row.

Colo Colo lead the Primera Division with 25 points, six ahead of Universidad Catolica, who defeated Deportes Iquique 1-0.

Palestino moved within two points of O´Higgins in fourth spot with a 1-0 victory at Cobreloa on Sunday, while in the other late matches of the round Nublense defeated Rangers 1-0 and Everton trumped Santiago Wanderers 2-1.

In other results, Universidad de Chile gave up a 2-1 lead and then fought back from 3-2 down to draw 3-3 with Union Espanola, Union La Calera triumphed 3-2 at Antofagasta and Audax Italiano played out a 2-2 draw with Universidad Concepcion.
