San Lorenzo: Ortigoza se arrepintió de su brutal infracción a Menseguez

BUENOS AIRES -- El mediocampista de San Lorenzo Néstor Ortigoza aclaró que no quiso "romper" al delantero de River Juan Carlos Menseguez, a quien le cometió una brutal falta antes de ser expulsado del clásico del domingo, por la 5ª fecha del Torneo Final.

El futbolista expresó "arrepentimiento" por la acción, en la que se le fue "la pata (sic) un poco de más" debido a que "estaba caldeado el ambiente" del partido.

"No lo fui a romper, siempre voy a la pelota. Se me fue un poco la pata de más. Cuando veo la jugada, le agradezco a Dios que no haya pasado nada. Me hubiera arrepentido toda mi vida", reconoció.

Ortigoza, excompañero de Menseguez en San Lorenzo, admitió que debió haber "frenado antes" de lanzarse con la suela de su botín derecho sobre el tobillo derecho del delantero.

"Justo a El Rayo que es más bueno... Venía de una lesión, es un excelente pibe, la relación quedó bárbara", cerró antes de hacer una breve referencia al flojo desempeño de San Lorenzo en el Monumental (0-1).

"Lo del rendimiento no fue un tema físico (por la acumulación de partidos entre campeonato y Copa Libertadores). No dábamos dos pases seguidos", aceptó con bronca.

El plantel de San Lorenzo volvió el lunes a los entrenamientos a puertas cerradas en la Ciudad Deportiva y el martes volverá a hacerlo desde las 10 con un trabajo que le servirá al DT, Edgardo Bauza, para analizar la profundidad de la rotación de cara a los dos próximos partidos en el Torneo Final.

El actual campeón argentino, sexto con 9 unidades, a tres del líder Colón de Santa Fe, recibirá el jueves a Rosario Central, visitará el domingo a Godoy Cruz de Mendoza y 48 horas después será local de Unión Española de Chile, por la Copa Libertadores.

Kosovo, Haiti to make history on Wednesday

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti -- Two very distant and distinct countries will unite under the banner of football for an historic international friendly that is sure to capture the attention of the world.

On Wednesday, Kosovo will play its first FIFA-approved match, when it welcomes Haiti to Mitrovica.

The former Yugoslavia territory is bidding to become an affiliate of UEFA and FIFA, hoping that the game against the CONCACAF side can assist in its push for membership.

Following a unilateral declaration of independence from Serbia in 2008, Kosovo has been recognized by 23 members of the European Union and 108 members of the United Nations. It remains, however, unrecognized as a sovereign nation.

Over the last 12 months, Haiti has fought back for a 2-2 draw with Italy, fell bravely 2-1 to Spain and participated in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The match will be also be the first for the Grenadiers under the direction of new head coach Marc Collat, who was named to the position in January.

Cruzeiro´s Dede linked with Real Madrid switch

Cruzeiro and Brazil centre back Dede has been linked with a move to Europe after impressing for the Copa Libertadores team in the past twelve months. With Real Madrid seemingly looking to strengthen an area in which ageing Portuguese Pepe plays, esporte.com have highlighted 25 year-old Dede as a possible replacement.

Shakhtar’s Bernard concerned with situation in Ukraine as he links up with Brazil squad

Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Bernard linked up with the national team today but first spoke to ESPN about the current conflict going on in Ukraine and warned he would flee the country if the situation worsens.

The Brazilian winger admits he is concerned with the ongoing protests and Terra, who quoted the former Atlético Mineiro player, said he is currently weighing up whether or not to return to Ukraine following international duty.

Bernard said: “The demonstrations in the city centre, in front of city hall, have already begun.

“My parents and a cousin live with me. I have already talked to the ambassador of Brazil about if it gets worst if we leave Ukraine as soon as possible

“You can not stay quiet. I have this concern but it is now left in the hands of God.”

Bernard only moved to Shakhtar last summer following a triumphant Copa Libertadores campaign where he inspired Galo to success.

The 21-year-old hasn’t regularly showed his ability in Ukraine and he did admit that he loves fulfilling his dream of playing for a major European team.

Bernard concluded: “I have the dream of playing for a big European club but I am only there for seven months at the club. It is a big investment and the president does not want to release me.”

Liga MX Round-up: America snaps skid

Whenever close rivals in a league table meet, it is often referred to as a six-pointer, instead of the usual total available of three. That´s because such a win not only secures three points for the victor, but also denies the rival of them. Such a situation took place this past weekend between Liga MX leaders Cruz Azul and their nearest competition, Toluca.

Los Cementeros were triumphant by the bare minimum, scoring a single goal. Team icon Christian Gimenez, still on the comeback from a recent injury, came into the scoreless match as a substitute in the 67th minute. Santos Laguna has two reasons to be disappointed after a 3-2 loss to Atlas: Not only did the team lose a match that it led early on, but again, they lost an opportunity to gain on the top eight teams currently in playoff position. Opportunities to move into that zone will dwindle as the playoffs approach.

The resurgence at the start of the season has faded somewhat for Chivas. Though Guadalajara didn´t lose in a 0-0 draw versus Tigres, the club is clinging to seventh place in the table and doesn´t appear to be gaining momentum in the second half of the Clausura thus far. It would be a crushing blow for fans if the team misses the playoffs yet again.

Club Tijuana is another team that veers between the extremes of contender and chump. They led against Veracruz for much of the match thanks to a Christian Pellerano goal, but in the 80th minute they gave up the equalizing goal to finish in a draw versus the last team in the league table.

One club that is definitely gathering steam as the season continues is Leon. The defending champions squashed Chiapas FC soundly, scoring three times and allowing no goals against. Elias Hernandez, Miguel Sabah and Mauro Boselli all contributed goals. Gustavo Matosas may have his players hitting their stride at the right time. The club is currently in fifth place and looks likely to move higher.

Last season, Leon never really challenged league leaders Club America for the top of the table, but Matosas´ game plan was executed perfectly in the playoffs to take the championship. The pieces may be falling into place for a sequel to that strategy. Cruz Azul would do well to remember how the original story ended.

Tobio reaparece en Vélez

BUENOS AIRES -- El defensor Fernando Tobio, ausente en la última victoria ante Boca (1-0), regresará a la titularidad en Vélez, mientras el delantero Roberto Nanni recibió su primera citación desde que volvió al club en la pretemporada de cara al próximo partido ante Newell´s Old Boys de Rosario.

El marcador central reemplazará a Facundo Cardozo después de cumplir con una fecha de suspensión, de acuerdo a lo ensayado este lunes por el DT José "Turu" Flores en un trabajo táctico reducido.

De la misma tarea participó Nanni, aunque su presencia desde el inicio en el estadio "Marcelo Bielsa" del Parque de la Independencia todavía no fue definida por el entrenador.

Además de los dos futbolistas mencionados, Flores convocó a Sebastián Sosa y Martín Perafán (arquero); Fabián Cubero, Cardozo, Sebastián Domínguez y Emiliano Papa (defensores). Leandro Desábato, Leonardo Villalba, Agustín Allione, Jorge Correa, Ariel Cabral y Lucas Romero y Héctor Canteros (mediocampistas); Ramiro Cáseres, Mauro Zárate y Lucas Pratto (delanteros).

Vélez, escolta del líder Colón de Santa Fe (12) junto a Estudiantes de La Plata con 10 unidades, visitará a Newell´s el miércoles a las 22.10, con arbitraje de Jorge Baliño, por la sexta fecha del Torneo Final.

Verón no jugará en Estudiantes

LA PLATA -- El capitán de Estudiantes La Plata, Juan Sebastián Verón, no viajará a Córdoba para el compromiso del miércoles ante Belgrano por la sexta fecha del Torneo Final por una fatiga muscular y regresaría recién en la octava jornada para el clásico ante Gimnasia.

Verón, de 38 años, jugó los 90 minutos en los dos últimos cotejos, ante Boca y Newell`s Old Boys, pero frente a los rosarinos finalizó con una molestia muscular que lo tendrá inactivo con el fin de preservarlo para el juego ante el máximo rival, programado para el 16 de marzo.

La "Brujita" encara su último campeonato como jugador profesional tras la decisión de ponerle fin a su carrera futbolística que inició en 1995, con Estudiantes La Plata en la segunda división del fútbol argentino.

Por su parte, el plantel se entrenó hoy en el predio de City Bell con vistas al encuentro ante Belgrano, donde los que fueron titulares en el empate sin goles ante Newell`s efectuaron tareas regenerativas y el resto llevó a cabo una práctica de fútbol reducido.

El defensor Leandro Desábato estuvo ausente porque viajó a Caferatta, ciudad de donde es oriundo, por razones familiares.

En tanto, el entrenador Mauricio Pellegrino se inclinaría por el mediocampista Román Martínez y el atacante Álvaro Klusener para reemplazar a Verón y Franco Jara, y en ese caso, Mariano González y Jorge Luna volverían a estar entre los convocados.

Estudiantes La Plata, que reúne 10 puntos en el certamen, visitará el miércoles a Belgrano de Córdoba, en el partido válido por la sexta fecha del Torneo Final que se jugará desde las 18, con el arbitraje de Juan Pablo Pompei.

Perazzo: "A Riquelme lo hubiese preferido una fecha más afuera"

BAHIA BLANCA -- El DT de Olimpo de Bahía Blanca, Walter Perazzo, admitió hoy que hubiese preferido "una fecha más afuera" al talentoso mediocampista de Boca Juan Román Riquelme, quien volverá a la titularidad el próximo miércoles ante su equipo, en La Bombonera, por la sexta fecha del Torneo Final.

"El regreso de Riquelme es una buena noticia para el fútbol argentino, ya que jugadores de su nivel estén en una cancha es positivo, pero lo hubiese preferido una fecha más afuera", expresó Perazzo.

Perazzo señaló que aún no se juntó con sus dirigidos para trabajar con vistas al compromiso ante Boca, pero en caso que Riquelme sea confirmado por el DT Carlos Bianchi como titular, no variará su sistema de juego.

"Vamos a mantener nuestra idea, a pesar que vuelva Riquelme, y en La Bombonera. No hacemos una marcación especial a ningún jugador porque preferimos jugar en zona", indicó el exdelantero de San Lorenzo y Boca.

A propósito del enfrentamiento ante Boca, Perazzo apuntó que debe analizar el estado físico de algunos de sus futbolistas: "En el mediocampo y en ataque tengo varios jugadores con molestias como (Damián) Musto, (Leonardo) Gil, (Ezequiel) Cerutti y (Ezequiel) Miralles, pero vamos a esperar sus evoluciones".

Perazzo, ex DT del seleccionado argentino Sub-20, señaló a Télam que enfrentar a Boca (reúne cuatro puntos sobre cinco jugados) "siempre es difícil" porque más allá de su presente futbolístico tiene jugadores que hicieron "méritos" para vestir "una camiseta muy pesada".

Olimpo de Bahía Blanca, que en la jornada pasada salió de la zona de descenso, viene de derrotar 2-0 a Lanús, de local, reúne siete unidades en el certamen, y en la sexta fecha visitará a Boca, en el encuentro que se jugará el miércoles, desde las 20.10, con el arbitraje de Darío Herrera.

Cáceres quedó descartado en Newell´s

ROSARIO -- El defensor paraguayo de Newell´s, Marcos Cáceres, quedó descartado por un esguince en la rodilla izquierda para el partido del miércoles ante Vélez Sarsfield, en el estadio Coloso Marcelo Bielsa de Rosario, por la sexta fecha del Torneo Final 2014.

Cáceres sufrió esa lesión en el empate sin goles ante Estudiantes La Plata, en la jornada pasada, y quedó fuera del equipo por decisión del cuerpo médico y técnico de la Lepra, a la espera de su pronta recuperación.

Además, el delantero Fabián Muñoz terminó el cotejo ante el Pincha con una contractura en la pierna derecha y tampoco sería de la partida para jugar ante Vélez, junto a Maximiliano Rodríguez y Ever Banega, quienes fueron citados por el DT del seleccionado argentino, Alejandro Sabella, para el amistoso del miércoles ante Rumania, en Bucarest.

Por su parte, el entrenador Alfredo Berti podrá contar con el defensor Gabriel Heinze y el volante Diego Mateo y aguardará por la recuperación física del goleador David Trezeguet, quien padece una molestia en la rodilla izquierda.

Newell´s, que reúne seis puntos en el certamen, recibirá el miércoles a Vélez, desde las 22.15, en el cotejo válido por la sexta fecha del Torneo Final 2014.

FC Porto´s Fernando could yet play at World Cup for Portugal

Portugal boss Paulo Bento says that the possibility of Fernando playing for the country is one that is still under serious consideration as he plans the make up of his squad ahead of this summer´s World Cup in Brazil.

The FC Porto defensive midfielder, who was born in the hosts´ back yard, is eligible to line up alongside Cristiano Ronaldo et al after completing the necessary residency period in Portugal. Despite having a strong base in that area of the pitch, with Miguel Veloso amongst those Bento could call upon, the boss admits to keeping tabs on Fernando.

"Fernando hasn´t been and could not have been called up for reasons not related to football," said Bento on the upcoming friendly match against Cameroon, "the fact that he is not here right now doesn´t mean that he cannot be when the squad is called up for the World Cup."

Fernando previously represented Brazil at under-20 level after moving to Europe.
