Argentina Primera Division Wrap: San Lorenzo silence Rosario, Colon held

San Lorenzo moved within one point of Argentina Primera Division leaders Colon, while Newell´s continued their resurgence with a big win.

Substitute Nicolas Blandi scored a late brace for San Lorenzo as they came from behind to defeat Rosario Central 2-1 on Thursday.

Leaders of the Primera Division´s Torneo Final - Colon - had been held to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday by Godoy Cruz, which gave Torneo Inicial champions San Lorenzo the chance to edge closer to the top of the standings.

After Rosario striker Carlos Luna had stunned the home crowd with a goal in the fourth minute, San Lorenzo looked to have wasted that chance.

But a 59th-minute red card to visiting defender Rafael Delgado gave San Lorenzo the upper hand and the hosts pulled off an impressive comeback when Blandi struck in the 85th and 88th minutes.

It got worse for Rosario as well with Hernan Encina sent off in the 90th minute.

Colon remain first in the table with 13 points but San Lorenzo (12) and Estudiantes (11) are both within striking distance, while Godoy Cruz, Belgrano and Velez Sarsfield (all 10) could draw level with the leaders over the weekend.

Newell´s thumped Velez 4-1 on Wednesday to make it seven points from their past three games as the reigning Torneo Final champions rose to seventh position in the table.

The opening three rounds of the Torneo Final had seen Newell´s fail to win but they have now moved to nine points after two wins and a draw in their past three matches.

Victor Figueroa was the key man for Newell´s at the Estadio Marcelo Alberto Bielsa, setting up two goals and scoring the home side´s fourth with an audacious chip.

Figueroa´s corner in first-half stoppage time saw Gabriel Heinze open the scoring for Newell´s, while Milton Casco made it 2-0 just after the break after playing a one-two with Ezequiel Ponce.

A brilliant passing move in the 55th minute saw Cristian Diaz score the hosts´ third goal with Figueroa providing the decisive pass, chipping the ball over Velez´s defence for his teammate to volley home.

Velez hit back with 11 minutes remaining through Roberto Nanni but Figueroa ensured Newell´s finished the match on a high, chipping visiting goalkeeper Sebastian Sosa from inside his attacking half in the 88th minute.

In other results, Boca Juniors defeated Olimpo 2-0, Tigre held River Plate to a scoreless draw, Lanus edged out Racing Club 1-0, Gimnasia La Plata drew 1-1 with Atletico Rafaela, Quilmes won 2-0 at Arsenal, Belgrano drew 1-1 with Estudiantes, while All Boys versus Argentinos Juniors remained goalless.

Paraguay-Uruguay same same :D
Kenny Dalglish had scouted the young star at Bordeaux, and requested the chairman Jack Walker to begin discussions with the player’s club. He refused, and famously said, “Why do you want to sign Zinedine Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?”
Brazil international racially abused

Santos midfielder Arouca was racially abused by fans while giving a postmatch interview to reporters in the latest case of racism to hit the hosts of the 2014 World Cup.

Arouca, who played for Brazil´s national team last year, was on the field talking to reporters after his team´s 5-2 win in the Sao Paulo state championship on Thursday when some fans in the stands called him "monkey."

The insults came a day after a referee said he was targeted by racist fans before and after a match, and less than a month after another Brazilian player was insulted in a Copa Libertadores game in Peru.

´´It´s better to block that out, better not to listen to these people, if you can actually call them people,´´ said the 27-year-old Arouca, who scored one of Santos´ goals in the interior city of Mogi Mirim. ´´It´s hard to talk about what is happening these days. It´s tough, but we know it happens, not only in soccer. I just hope someone can do something serious about it because it´s lamentable.´´

While still talking to reporters, Arouca kept looking at the stands to try to find the fans who yelled at him. Reporters later said the insults came from a group of three or four Mogi Mirim fans.

Brazil has been making headlines for the wrong reasons as it tries to get ready for the World Cup. In addition to problems finishing stadiums and infrastructure work, the country has also been dealing with several cases of fan violence and court disputes that threaten to delay this year´s Brazilian league because of a controversial sports tribunal decision that altered the results of last year´s tournament.

´´We can´t let something like this happen, especially with the World Cup just around the corner,´´ Santos coach Oswaldo de Oliveira said after the insults to Arouca. ´´These people need to be punished.´´

Police officials said they would try to find the fans responsible.

On Wednesday, referee Marcio Chagas da Silva said some fans called him ´´monkey´´ and told him to ´´return to the jungle´´ before a match in the Rio Grande do Sul state championship. He said his car was vandalised and bananas were left on top of it.

´´Unfortunately, this type of attitude is still happening in this country,´´ Silva said.

Last month, Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff gave her support to a black Brazilian player who was taunted with monkey chants every time he touched the ball during a Copa Libertadores match in Peru. On her Twitter feed, Rousseff called the incident involving Cruzeiro player Tinga ´´sad,´´ adding that ´´sports can never serve as a stage for prejudice.´´

Racist behaviour is a longstanding problem at matches in Europe. FIFA has sponsored anti-racism campaigns that have had modest levels of success, and it has promised to raise more awareness during this year´s World Cup.
