Flamengo Beat Botafogo to Win Taça Guanabara: Daily

Flamengo win group stage of state 2014 Campeonato Carioca tournament with 2-0 win over Botafogo.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Flamengo beat Botafogo 2-0 yesterday evening in the 2014 Campeonato Carioca, securing the Taça Guanabara, the tournament’s group stage, in the process. The result at the Maracanã eliminated Botafogo from the state championship, leaving them free to focus on the Copa Libertadores.

Flamengo were the better side from the kick-off and thoroughly deserved the three points. The Rubro-Negro raced into the lead after only ten minutes through Gabriel.

The forward received the ball from Márcio Araújo and drove a shot beneath Helton Leite in the Fogo goal. Botafogo never truly looked like getting back on a level footing, their players looking apathetic in surrender.

Hernane twice wasted good chances to stretch the lead as Flamengo ran amok. Botafogo continually failed to react, Henrique cutting a lonely figure in the Alvinegro attack, with Flamengo goalkeeper Felipe not called into action once during the opening 45 minutes.

Midway through the second half Botafogo’s task was made even trickier when Airton was dismissed. Hernane missed yet another opportunity as Fla managed to run the game without breaking sweat.

Then at the death the Flamengo number nine laid on a goal for Léo. Hernane’s touch freed his teammate to send a rasping effort beyond Leite and make sure of the points.

Earlier in the day, Fluminense drew 2-2 with Duque de Caxias at the Estádio Raulino de Oliveira. Having rested Fred and Conca, the Tricolor struggled to overcome their opponents despite them being reduced to ten men early in the second half.

Alex Terra headed Duque into the lead on eight minutes before Wágner’s fine volley leveled the scores. But a wonderfully curling effort from Juninho restored the minnows’ advantage just two minutes later.

Duque goalkeeper Andrade was sent off in the second half for time wasting and persistent complainig to the referee. And his side was made to pay when Walter’s free header snatched a point for Flu in the dying stages.

Rousseff Speaks Out Against Racism in Football: Daily

With the FIFA World Cup fast approaching, two incidents of racism during soccer (football) matches have sparked outrage and caused the Brazilian President to respond via Twitter.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Sunday, March 9th, Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff condemned, via Twitter, recent acts of racism against a Brazilian soccer (football) player and referee. The incidents happened in the south of Brazil, and has raised alarms in the media and sports community.

The first incident of racism occurred in Mogi Mirim`s stadium in São Paulo state when popular team Santos’ defensive midfielder Arouca met with cries of “monkey” from a smaller group of supporters during his team’s 5 to 2 victory over Mogi Mirim (a smaller team in the state) on March 6th in the 12th round match of the state tournament there.

Next at a match pitting Esportivo against Veranópolis, in Bento Gonçalves, Rio Grande do Sul, referee Márcio Chagas da Silva was also allegedly called “monkey” by fans while refereeing the match and bananas were reportedly left on top of his car and in his exhaust pipe.

“Brazilian football was marred by scenes of racism against the referee Márcio Chagas da Silva and Arouca,” Rousseff tweeted on Sunday. “It is unacceptable that Brazil, the largest black nation outside of Africa, should meet with these scenes of racism.”

With the FIFA World Cup scheduled to begin in Brazil in less than one hundred days on June 12th, international attention is focusing on the country’s preparations in all areas for the games. Additionally Rousseff stated optimistically; “Let’s tackle racism! I know with the UN and FIFA this World Cup will also be the Cup of Peace and Cup against racism.”

Alajuelense seeks to gain advantage at home

ALAJUELA, Costa Rica – Head coach Oscar Ramirez wants Alajuelense to focus on scoring goals, when it hosts Panama’s Arabe Unido in their CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) quarterfinal opener on Monday.

The Costa Rican side is aiming to take care of business at home, before heading to the Estadio Rommel Fernandez next week for the second leg.

"These are difficult series,” said Ramirez. “We must try to make the most of it at home, get three points and score goals, because it will be hard to play in Panama.

“Yes, Arabe Unido is where it is on its own merit. It´s a tough team because its characteristics are complicated, this has cost us historically. They have improved tactically with Colombian influence."

In his two stints as head coach, Ramirez and the Manudos have done extremely well domestically, winning five titles and never falling short of the semifinals.

This is the first time, however, the two-time CONCACAF champion has advanced beyond the CCL’s group stage.

"We have to go game by game,” the 49-year-old added. “We have been building this since we won a championship, to get beyond the groups. The game in Mexico (CCL win at Club America that clinched Alajuelense’s place in the quarterfinals) is in the back of the eye.

"We have thoughts of reaching the Club World Cup, but remember that the Panamanian team also has its claims and it will not be easy.”

At the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto Scotiabank, Alajuelense is unbeaten in the Verano with four wins and a draw in five games (14 goals for, 3 goals against). Against Arabe, though, the Rojinegros will be without the injured Armando Alonso and Jorge Davis (midfielders) and Dexter Lewis (goalkeeper).

All other players are healthy, including forward Jerry Palacios, who has scored four goals in his last two Verano games and also netted in Honduras’ 2-1 win over Venezuela last week.

Alpizar is part of Alajuelense, CONCACAF history

ALAJUELA, Costa Rica – Not only is Alejandro Alpizar the only player on Alajuelense’s current roster to be on the team when it last captured the CONCACAF club title more than a decade ago, he is also one of only five players to have scored in the CONCACAF Champions League with three different teams.

His name has appeared on the scoresheet for Alajuelense (2013-14), Saprissa (2008-09) and Liberia Mia (2009-10).

As a result, the 34-year-old forward has earned a special place in CONCACAF history and his experience is always willingly available for the Costa Rican power as it targets yet another championship.

"Experience is an important aspect that I can bring to the group”, expressed Alpizar. “We´ve been fortunate enough to play in international matches. I also had the good fortune to be the last team of La Liga to that was champion (of CONCACAF) and it is part of what we try to convey to young people, we can be champions."

In 2004, Alajuelense was crowned CONCACAF champion for the second and last time in 2004 (it also won the 1986 edition), defeating Saprissa in the final, 5-1 on aggregate. The FIFA Club World Cup was not played that year and, thus, an opportunity to make a mark on the global stage was missed.

A year later, another Costa Rican side – Saprissa – won the CONCACAF Champions Cup and attended the FIFA event, which took place for the first time since 2000. The Monstruo Morado finished among the top three, defeating Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad in the match for third place, 3-2.

Alpizar and Alajuelense don’t want to be left out of the party this year.
