Kenny Dalglish had scouted the young star at Bordeaux, and requested the chairman Jack Walker to begin discussions with the player’s club. He refused, and famously said, “Why do you want to sign Zinedine Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?”

Eduardo Hungaro: State championship campaign failed to honour Botafogo traditions

Although the Alvinegro failed to qualify for the final phase of the Campeonato Carioca, the coach feels that the competition at least gave him an opportunity to observe the squad.

Botafogo’s involvement in this year’s state championship came to an end on Saturday.

A 1-1 draw with Nova Iguaçu left the Rio de Janeiro outfit a long way short of qualification for the next phase of a competition in which the team have consistently underperformed.

According to coach Eduardo Hungaro, the team’s performance in the competition failed to honour the club’s traditions.

“It was below what we expected. Nothing to do with the tradition of Botafogo. We have to take responsibility for this and be very serious in our evaluation,” he said.

“It was a championship to forget. It was something we didn’t want to happen. But we will take conclusions from this and they will stay with us.”

“At least it revealed some issues that we are going to solve internally. Now we basically have an x-ray of all the players because they have all been observed.”

This year Botafogo have fielded one team for the Campeonato Carioca and another for the Copa Libertadores, in which they are currently group leaders.

Their next game will take place on 2 April when they face Unión Española at the Maracanã.

UPP Commander Shot in Rio’s Manguinhos: Daily

Pacifying Police Unit officers left injured and their UPP burned down as violence in the Zona Norte continues to rise.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The commander of the Manguinhos community’s Police Pacification Unit (UPP) was shot in the leg, while the unit headquarters of UPP Manguinhos were burned down last night (Thursday) as violent clashes between officers from the UPP and residents of the Zona Norte (North Zone) of Rio de Janeiro continue to escalate.

According to the military police, the unit was attacked during a protest against the eviction of occupants from an abandoned building on Avenida Leopoldo Bulhões in the Manguinhos suburb of Rio, with Commander Gabriel Toledo shot in the leg while patrolling the area. Another officer sustained a head injury when residents of the building countered police attempts to vacate the structure by throwing stones.

Another version of the story claims that criminals from the city’s Zona Oeste (West Zone) had met with drug traffickers from the Zona Norte to take over a community controlled by another criminal group. These groups entered into a confrontation with police upon their arrival in the area. At the time of press, there was no consensus as to what gave root to the confrontations in Manguinhos.

The shock battalion police was activated and arrived on the scene at 6:40PM. Traffic in the area was shut down at approximately 7PM when the confrontation turned into a firefight and protesters blocked the street with burning tires, effectively closing Avenida Leopoldo Bulhões in both directions, as well as the Saracurana extension of the Supervia commuter train, and forcing all trains to remain at Central Station.

By 7:50 PM the UPP containers that serve as headquarters for the Manguinhos unit were completely engulfed by flames as the conflict continued. This is the latest in a series of violent confrontations between police and residents of the Zona Norte favelas that have resulted in more police fatalities in the first three months of 2014 than the entire year of 2013.

This past weekend, two police officers were gunned down, bringing the number of police deaths this year to nineteen. The renewed violence in pacified favelas has led to re-occupation of some areas by BOPE (Special Operations Battalion) in an attempt to “reassert stability.” Hundreds of BOPE’s elite troops have been redeployed to the favelas of Complexo do Alemão and Complexo da Penha in Zona Norte of Rio.

BOPE Reoccupy Favelas to Aid UPP in Zona Norte

Rio´s elite military police reoccupy favelas after four UPP officers were killed in the last month.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – On Saturday, officers from BOPE (Special Operations Battalion) reoccupied the Complexo do Alemão and Complexo da Penha in the Zona Norte (North Zone) of Rio, after the death of four UPP (Pacifying Police Unit) officers in the past month. Between 200 and 300 BOPE officers will patrol the communities in order to “reassert stability”, according to the commander of the UPPs.

BOPE forces last occupied Alemão and Penha in 2010, when they were first “pacified” and started the long process to receiving UPP stations. The re-occupation of the territories is a sign of the escalating and violent situation there in the past few months.

The immediate spark was the death of UPP officer Leison Acácio, who died after being shot in the head in Vila Cruzeiro, Penha, on Thursday. Two other police officers were killed in Rio on Saturday. The total number of officers killed so far in 2014 now surpasses those killed in the entirety of 2013.

Frederico Caldas, the commander of the UPPs, stated that their “response would be extremely tough,” and that the UPP officers will carry out various operations this week with the support of BOPE and Choque (Shock Police Battalion) officers. They will also train around a hundred UPP officers to create an “intervention” unit for violent situations.

Kimberly Farnham, an American student who has lived in Alemão for over a year, said of the reoccupation by BOPE, “The biggest difference in the day to day is the amount of police around. I personally haven’t had any encounters with the police, but from the way people talk about it here, it has amplified a culture of fear. People are worried that a war is going to start again.”

“While everyone agrees that there are still banditos here and something needs to be done about them,” she continued, “the police don’t seem to be doing that. They are using their power to intimidate regular people who are just trying to live their life as they always do.”

As well as four police deaths and those of an unknown number of criminals, residents of Alemão and Penha have complained of violence and intimidation coming from both sides. On Tuesday, various residents protested against the arrests of two youths, Kleyton da Rocha Afonso and Hallam Marcilio Gonçalves, as arbitrary and unjust.

They were arrested in relation to the death of a UPP officer, Rodrigo de Souza Paes Leme on Thursday, March 6th. Police used tear gas and pepper spray against the crowd, with live rounds reportedly fired, and the protest was followed by a night of shootouts and violence.

Amid the controversy surrounding the UPP program after the recent violence, Vila Kennedy, a favela in Rio’s Zona Oeste (West Zone), will receive the 38th UPP after BOPE officers invaded and occupied the territory on Thursday.

Sérgio Cabral, Governor of Rio de Janeiro state, defended the project by saying, “Is it better for the communities to continue without any structure and with the guns of the gangs, or is it better to have police present, guaranteeing the citizens peacefulness, growing commerce in the community, and the investment of the Municipality and the Government?”

ANFP Settles Pol Punishment After Severly Injurying Buskupovic

Marko Buskupovic suffers severe injury after a slide check from forward Marco Sebastián Pol. Journalist Javiera Naranjo from CDF, Biskupovic’s girlfriend, received support from the UC team while she was in the middle of covering this horrible and shocking news.

SANTIAGO – The Disciplinary Tribunal of the ANFP decided to give two dates of punishment to the striker of Santiago Wanderers, Mark Sebastian Pol, after receiving a red card in the match against Universidad Católica of the Clausura Tournament.

At 24′, the Argentinian dangerously slide checked defender Marko Buskupovic trying to steal the ball, leaving Buskupovic with a severe injury, a joint fracture/dislocation in his left ankle in what was a shocking and disturbing image.

The 24-year-old defender will be out of the field for 4 to 6 months, according to the doctors of Universidad Catolica.

Meanwhile, the striker will not play in the games against Universidad de Concepción (away game) and Unión Española (home game). He will be returning for the game against Rangers in Talca, on the fourteenth day of the tournament.

Although this was a horrifying experience for Buskupovic, he is really grateful for all the support he has received. “I’m in a lot of pain, but I feel a little bit better,” Buskupovic confessed, due to all of the love and support he has received.

“I want to thank all my fans, Sergio Jadue (President of ANFP), people from other teams, ex-teammates etc. I want to thank them all and let them know that it really touches my heart seeing that they care, my friends, my family, my girlfriend, everyone. I’m really grateful, this gives me strength to carry on” said Buskupovic.

Regarding his expected recovery time established by Doctor Andrés Villa, Buskupovic stated that “the doctor said that I will recover just like any other injury and I have already had surgery in that ankle, so in that sense I feel confident”.

Despite his time away from the field, he expressed his desire to support his team and be present at the game this Sunday at the Clásico Universitario.

“Whether I can take the pain or not, if I’m at home and have the opportunity to go to the stadium, I will. I hope I can, but I wish them good luck for this Sunday”, he said.
