Lavezzi: PSG could tempt Lionel Messi

Ezequiel Lavezzi has told TF1 that Lionel Messi could join him at Paris Saint-Germain, saying: "A club like PSG could attract a player like Messi."

Reports in French media say PSG´s wealthy Qatari owners, who have already invested more than 300 million euros in the squad at the Parc des Princes, would be tempted to make a move for Messi, despite his ties to Barcelona.

Lavezzi, 28, said it is no longer only in the realms of fantasy that his fellow Argentina international could embellish the constellation of stars already in the French capital.

"Why not? Anything´s possible in football now, even though he´s strongly identified with a team. There are times when you´re tired, you want a change of scenery, so why not? It´s certain a club like PSG could attract a player like Messi. The club has to see, the player too," the former Napoli player said, adding his international teammate was no doubt aware of PSG´s growing stature in European football.

"In the national team, we talk about PSG, the players watch the games. PSG has become a team watched around the world. Everyone knows we´re good, that we can win the Champions League, the league or any game."

For the moment, Laurent Blanc´s squad are managing to do that quite comfortably without Messi, however. Top of Ligue 1, in the Coupe de la Ligue final and with a Champions League quarterfinal tie with Chelsea to look forward to, the reigning French champions are on course to improve on last season´s achievements of a domestic crown and a run to the last eight of European club football´s premier competition.

"I think we´ve grown as a team. We´ve shared things, good moments and we know each other better. Other players have arrived, settled in very well and that´s important. Day by day, we progress together and we improve," Lavezzi explained, adding he played in the shadow of fellow striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the principal catalyst for the team´s success.

"At Napoli, I had a different influence on the pitch, like Ibrahimovic here. All passes go through him, the team depends on him, he scores a lot more goals than me. But I´m happy, I have fun. It´s sure that playing with great players, like here, helps lift your game and everyone takes advantage."

Dante signs new Bayern contract

Bayern Munich defender Dante has signed a one-year extension to his contract at the club, ending speculation about his future.

The Brazil international, 30, had been linked with Manchester United, but he has instead chosen to commit his future to the European champions.

The former Borussia Moenchengladbach player has enjoyed great success since joining in 2012, winning the Treble last season, and is a key part of the side that has gone unbeaten in the Bundesliga this campaign and that has reached the Champions League quarterfinals.

“It was the best decision of my life to come to FC Bayern,” he said in a press release. “Everything is great: The club, the team, the trophies, the atmosphere.

“Bayern are the right club for me. That’s why it’s a pleasure to stay until 2017. I am sure that we’ll have a lot of fun and success with our team in the years to come.”

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge added: “Dante was certainly one of best transfers in recent years. In only one and half years he has turned into an important player for our team -- on and off the pitch.

“With Dante our team has won five national and international trophies. Moreover, he’ll see the dream of every Brazilian footballer turn reality in the summer: A World Cup participation in his home country. We are very pleased that Dante will call FC Bayern a home until 2017.”

America still failing to impress

Everybody has guilty pleasures.

Some still listen to The Cardigan´s "Lovefool" on repeat while others really enjoy movies like Titanic or Gone with the Wind. That previous sentence may or may not pertain to me, but what I want to focus on is a guilty pleasure of mine involving soccer. To be more specific, I have recently been supporting a team I never expected to: Club America.

I hope my father, a die-hard Chivas Guadalajara fan, never reads this article, but I have been secretly hoping for America to do well the past few months. Don´t expect me to buy one of those horrific half America/half El Tri jerseys anytime soon, but do expect me to give a silent celebration whenever the team does well. Why? Well, because of Miguel Herrera, that´s why.

As long as Herrera is the captain of the S.S. El Tri, I´m going to have to support America whether I like it or not. It´s no secret that he has favored the America players for the national team and has utilized most of them as the base of the squad. Even without Miguel Layun, America still had six of its players called-up in the match against Nigeria earlier this month. While it can be argued that certain players like goalkeeper Moises Munoz, defenders Juan Carlos Valenzuela or Francisco Rodriguez aren´t going to be starting players for El Tri, they are still more than likely going to be on that plane to Brazil and be options for Herrera during the summer.

It´s a very simple way of looking at it, but my assumption is that if America do well, it will benefit the national team. If America don´t do well, it might negatively influence the national team. There are of course many more variables coming into play and a bad season would of course not keep Mexico from excelling at the World Cup. However, I can’t help but feel that thriving in the Clausura wouldn´t be unfavorable.

Which is why America´s match against Veracruz was painful to watch. For lack of a better word, the game was just boring. Perhaps it was the pressure of critics expecting a win at the very least, but America looked static and at times even unmotivated to play the match. It was almost as if the players were counting on a goal to happen upon itself.

What was even more embarrassing is that one of the better opportunities in the match was an own-goal that almost happened for Munoz after he poorly trapped a back-pass from Valenzuela in the first half. America easily controlled possession afterwards but were unable to follow through with most of their plays in the final third of the pitch. It also didn´t help that las aguilas seemed to have one touch too many when they were close to Veracruz´s eighteen-yard box.

In the second half, America head coach Antonio Mohamed opted for a more attacking 4-4-2 for his side, but still had little to celebrate from it. America increased their pressure on the attack but center-back Leiton Jimenez and the rest of the Veracruz back line were able to easily deal with anything the America attack threw at them.

After the final whistle blew, America found themselves with another disappointing tie and their third game in a row without a win. In fact, they have only had one win in their last seven matches and haven´t seen a victory in their last four games at the Estadio Azteca. As an El Tri fan, this of course brought flashbacks from Mexico home games last year.

America still have the potential to bring themselves out of this drought and all eyes are on Mohamed to solve their problems and give them some much-need ambition. A crucial win against Chivas next week would be a huge self-esteem boost, but they still have to play Cruz Azul the week after and then Toluca in the final game of the season.

I´m not sure if I´ll ever be an America fan, but I currently wouldn´t be opposed to them winning.

Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton criticises Neymar again following Clásico display

Controversial English midfielder Joey Barton was one of millions watching the El Clásico yesterday and once again he felt it was the perfect time to criticise Brazilian superstar Neymar.

The summer signing from Santos failed to impress in the sensational seven goal thriller and throughout the game he received blast after blast from Queens Park Rangers midfielder Barton on social network site Twitter.

The 31-year-old former Marseille loanee started off with: “Neymar?? Pedro or Alexis should be playing. He’s rope…”

Before Barton went on to label Neymar again as the Justin Bieber of football with “fancy Barca if they drag Bieber off #showpony.”

The QPR player eased off his criticism for a while before coming back with a final flurry after Neymar had won his team a penalty and ensured Sergio Ramos would pick up a red card.

Barton added: “Neymar just before he gets the shepherds wins a penalty. Looking for it and goes down easy. Ramos red. Messi scores. Come on Barca.”

The one capped England international held back his most controversial comments for his last two tweets on the 22-year-old though.

Barton dismissed claims that the Brazilian is on par with Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronalod, Luis Suárez or Zlatan Ibrahimović.

“Anybody who speaks of Neymar in the same breath as Messi, Ronaldo, Suarez or Ibra wants their head testing,” Barton exclaimed.

“He’s miles away. #showpony. Neymar off. Barca win. Not rocket science.”

One 2 Watch: Luciano Vietto

Touted by many as the “new Aguero”, Racing Club attacker Luciano Vietto has really put himself on the Argentinian footballing map over the past couple of seasons. At just the tender age of 20, Vietto has already played over 50 league games for his club and has scored 17 goals since his debut in 2011 under then coach Diego Simeone.

Vietto is seen as one of the stars of the Argentinian First Division, and one of the brightest prospects of South American football, and it seems that his reputation is now being extended to Europe, with Liverpool, Real Madrid and two unnamed German clubs vying for his signature.

In fact, Real Madrid actually had an £8million bid rejected for Vietto when he had only 10 senior games under his belt, the club claiming that ”We just want to enjoy him, there’s no reason to put a price on him. We have the South American U20s coming up in January and his profile will only get bigger.”

However, now an established Argentina u20 international (with a goal ratio of 1 every 2 games), it seems Racing will be unable to resist bids coming in from top European clubs such as Madrid and Liverpool, should they meet the £15million asking price.

So what is it that Vietto offers?

Although certainly not the most physically imposing, Vietto possesses a spectacular burst of pace, and his low centre of gravity means that he is not easily knocked off the ball. A man with fantastic ball skill, Vietto is known to tie defenders in knots with his direct, pacy and step-over laced attacking style.

Blessed with fantastic technical ability when striking the ball and finishing ability comparable to some of Europe’s top attackers, Vietto has the nous to beat a goalkeepers from anywhere inside the box. Vietto also shows good attacking versatility, equally adept as an out and out forward, as a false 9 and as a winger, an asset that is not to be taken lightly.

At the age of 20, the Racing man is still very young and has time to improve as a footballer, but his exposure to first team football from a young age has seen him mature very quickly, and this will hold him in good stead as he looks for a move over to one of Europe’s elite leagues.

As a Racing player, Vietto is in good company, with the likes of Diego Simeone, Diego Milito, Claudio Yacob, Claudio Lopez and Lisandro Lopez all having come from Racing Club over to Europe with great success.

Vietto certainly has the attributes to succeed at one of Europe’s top clubs, and I predict that it will not be long before the name of Luciano Vietto is a household name on the international stage.

San Lorenzo: Cetto sufrió una fractura

BUENOS AIRES -- San Lorenzo de Almagro sufrió la baja del zaguero Mauro Cetto, por una fractura en un dedo del pie derecho, que lo dejaría fuera de la competencia en lo que resta del Torneo Final y la Copa Libertadores.

Cetto sufrió la fractura del segundo metatarsiano del pie derecho, según constató una placa radiográfica, tras chocar con un jugador de Gimnasia el domingo en la cada por 2-1.
