CFU Club Championship Recap: March 23, 2014

KINGSTON, Jamaica – Guyana’s Alpha United moved a step closer to a second CONCACAF Champions League appearance, sealing a place in the 2014 Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Club Championship semifinals with a 1-0 victory over Harbour View on Sunday.

Group 1 (Bayamon, Puerto Rico)

At the Estadio Juan Ramon Loubriel, Ronaldo Barbosa scored a late goal (82’) to lift Guadeloupe’s Unite Saint Rosienne past Bodden Town, 1-0. After a second straight loss, the Cayman Islands champion was eliminated from contention with one game remaining.

The victory gave USR a share of the group lead with host Bayamon FC, which was held to a goalless draw by Curacao’s Centro Dominguito.

Bayamon and USR will meet on Tuesday with the group title at stake.

Group 2 (Mirebalais, Haiti)

At the Stade Bayas, Jamaica’s Waterhouse took a two-point lead in Group 2 thanks to a 2-1 win over host AS Mirebalais. The game got off to an inauspicious start, when AS Mirebalais goalkeeper Williamson Valreius Williamson conceded an own-goal in the opening minute of play. Kenroy Howell doubled the lead four minutes after the break. The home team’s elimination could not be prevented despite Odlin Joseph getting his name on the scoresheet in the 66th minute.

Earlier in the evening, Trinidad & Tobago’s Caledonia AIA and Inter Moengotapoe played to a 2-2 draw. Following a goalless first half, Anduelo Amoeferie (48’) broke the deadlock with Inter’s first goal of the competition. Nuru Abdullah Muhammad (61’) and Tyrone Charles (72’) put the Trinidadians ahead as each scored their second goals of the tournament. Despite Kareem Kwasie (76’) ensuring Moengotapoe a share of the points, the Surinamese were eliminated.

In their meeting on Tuesday, Waterhouse needs only a draw against two-time CCL qualifier Caledonia to progress to the semifinals.

Católica second best in derby, Unión Española trounces Rangers, Palestino loses late and Iquique stays in the mix.

Colo Colo 3-0 O’Higgins

Colo Colo opened up a seven-point lead with five matches remaining at the top of the table with a 3-0 win Sunday against reigning league champions O’Higgins.

Having watched title rival Universidad Católica being soundly beaten by Universidad de Chile shortly before kick off, the three points available against fellow title challenger O’Higgins became even more significant for the Colo Colo players in their bid to win a league title for the first time since 2009.

Rising to the occasion, Héctor Tapia’s men produced an emphatic performance from start to finish, with striker Felipe Flores bundling in José Pedro Fuenzalida’s cross in the very first minute and Esteban Paredes rounding off the victory with a penalty in the very last.

The goal in between, coming in the 80th minute, was a testament to the strength of the Colo Colo squad as substitutes Mathias Vidangossy and Claudio Baeza combined to effectively seal the all-important three points.

The hosts did not have it all their own way, however, as O’Higgins’ midfielders Braulio Leal and Pabo Hernández both came close to equalizing before Baeza gave his side a two-goal cushion.

“We went a goal up early on but they pressed us well after that,” Tapia acknowledged. “O’Higgins played well, but my players gave it everything and we’ve come away with three very, very important points.”

The match threatened to be suspended midway through the second half when an array of fireworks and flares were set off in the crowd, but play resumed after a five minute stoppage.

“Fans need to understand that it is the club which could be punished,” Tapia said. “But from what I understand, we haven’t had a crowd smaller than 20,000 and controlling that many people is difficult.”

Coach Eduardo Berizzo last week highlighted the importance of the match, and the defeat is undeniably a huge blow to O’Higgins’ bid to retain the trophy, as the holders are now 10 points off top spot, in fourth on 22 points.

Universidad Católica 0-3 Universidad de Chile

Universidad de Chile earned the derby bragging rights with a dominant 3-0 victory over Universidad Católica in the “Clásico Universitario” Sunday.

Cristián Romero celebrated a “perfect victory” against rival Católica, in which the league’s top scorer Patricio Rubio ended the match with two goals and an assist.

A tragic back pass from Fernando Cordero gifted Rubio his first on 18 minutes, the striker rounding Cristopher Toselli with ease and sliding the ball into the empty net.

Both sides enjoyed an abundance of half-chances throughout the match, but neither could convert until the 86th minute when Rubio beat the offside trap to collect Gustavo Lorenzetti’s pass before returning the ball to the Argentine, who finished well past the scrambling Toselli.

The third, a spectacular finish in stoppage time from Rubio as he flicked the ball over Toselli and regathered it to finish, completed a memorable victory for “La U.”

President José Yuraszeck also declared his delight after a “tremendous victory” that could have even finished with “a couple more goals” for his team.

Despite the defeat, Católica manager Rodrigo Astudillo remained upbeat about his side’s league campaign.

“It’s not over yet, there are still 15 points to play for and we’ll fight to the finish,” he said.

Now seven points off the top, Católica can ill afford to drop more points in the Clausura. For Universidad de Chile, victory means the side climbs to fifth with 20 points.

Unión Española 4-0 Rangers

“Los Rojos” inflicted a fourth straight defeat on Rangers as they strolled to a 4-0 win Sunday.

Striker Patricio Vidal made the most of a rare starting place, scoring the first two goals of the match in an encouraging performance from the young Argentine.

Vidal combined well with countryman Carlos Salom for the first, playing a neat one-two with him and finishing smartly after 27 minutes.

However, Rangers fought to claw their way back into the game and were only denied by stand-in goalkeeper Raúl Olivares, who followed up a fine double save early in the second half with an acrobatic stop to divert striker Fabián Bordagaray’s missile shortly after.

The second goal was cruel on the visitors in both its timing and manner. Just as Rangers’ attacks were beginning to bear some fruit, Diego Pozo had the misfortune of watching his save rebound off Vidal and roll into the net.

Substitute Dagoberto Currimilla found the top corner with a bullet from 25 yards for the third, while Salom produced a superb looping header over Pozo to round off a fine afternoon for the hosts.

Rangers, who seem unable to buy a win at the moment, are rooted to the bottom of the table on eight points. Unión Española is in eighth, on 16 points.

Antofagasta 2-1 Palestino

Antofagasta snatched a 2-1 victory Saturday with a dramatic last-minute penalty against Palestino.

Defender Rodrigo Riquelme provided the game’s opening goal as he headed past his own goalkeeper, but his teammate Claudio Latorre canceled out the own goal after an hour after being played in by midfielder César Valenzuela.

The home side enjoyed the better chances following the equalizer — striker Javier Elizondo in particular won’t be watching the highlights, as he found himself with all the time in the world to pick his spot from inside the box in stoppage time, but managed to hoof the ball high and wide.

However, Elizondo made amends in the sixth minute of stoppage time, hammering a penalty awarded against Javier Capelli down the middle of the goal to secure three points for his side.

Antofagasta now sits in ninth with 14 points. Palestino remains on 20 points in sixth.

Deportes Iquique 2-0 Everton

Second half goals from Walter Mazzolatti and Gerson Martínez gave Iquique its first win over Everton for 23 years.

Some wasteful finishing from both sides ensured that neither side managed to break the deadlock in the first period, but the opener arrived after the introduction of Mazzolatti on 67 minutes, the striker scoring with his first touch of the ball just 12 seconds after coming on.

Forward Gerson Martínez doubled the hosts lead, covering some distance before slotting past Gustavo Dalsasso.

The victory sees Iquique sneak into third, with 22 points. Everton remains on 13 points, in 14th.

Cobresal 2-1 Ñublense

Cobresal came from behind to earn an important 2-1 victory Sunday over Ñublense, ending the away side’s three-match unbeaten run.

The hosts enjoyed a positive start to the match, hitting the woodwork twice in the opening half an hour through Víctor Hugo Sarabia and Ever Cantero.

However, they went behind shortly after halftime to a brilliant individual goal from Luciano Vásquez.

Cobresal replied straight from the kick off, with first Álvaro Navarro heading in and then Ever Cantero giving his side the lead 10 minutes after.

A second yellow card for defender Adán Vergara spoiled hopes of launching an all-out attack on the hosts’ narrow lead, and Cobresal hung on in relative comfort.

Cobresal now sits in 12th with 13 points. Ñublense is one place below on goal difference.

Universidad Concepción 2-1 Santiago Wanderers

Universidad Concepción ended its eight-match winless streak with a 2-1 victory Saturday over Santiago Wanderers.

Defender Mauricio Prieto was guilty of over-complicating matters at the back, losing possession instead of clearing the ball to safety — eventually falling to Leonardo Monje, whose shot took a heavy deflection and rolled over Gabriel Castellón’s goal line.

Midfielder Fernando Manríquez grabbed his side’s second, meeting a headed clearance on the full and connecting with an unstoppable volley just after the hour mark.

The visitors reduced the deficit in the final minutes through when Gastón Cellerino steered a header inside the far post, but it proved nothing more than a consolation.

Concepción manager Pablo Sánchez felt after the match that the victory gave his side a healthy “breathing space” from teams below — it is now in seventh with 17 points. Wanderers are lacking such a luxury, finding themselves in 16th with 12 points.

Unión La Calera 0-1 Cobreloa

Unión La Calera continued its miserable run with a narrow defeat Sunday at the hands of Cobreloa.

Midfielder Cristián Gaitán scored the only goal of the game, rewarded for his desire to support Álvaro López when the striker unselfishly squared for him to sweep into the empty net.

A red card for unnecessary violence from midfielder Agustín González made things more difficult for the hosts, although they were inches from an equalizer when defender Pablo Vergara’s cross drifted onto the crossbar in stoppage time.

Cobreloa coach Marcelo Trobbiani was understandably pleased with the three points.

“They may have had the better first half but we were better in the second and I’m happy with the result,” he said after the match.

Three points for Cobreloa puts it into 12th, with 13 points. Unión La Calera drops to 15th with 12 points.

Audax Italiano 0-0 Huachipato

Audax Italiano and Huachipato shared the points in a 0-0 draw Friday, in which both sides sacrificed attacking freedom for defensive stability.

The home side peppered the Huachipato goal throughout the match but was unable to find a way past a resilient Miguel Jiménez, while his counterpart Alejandro Sánchez also put in a solid performance for the home side.

Without a win in five, Audax Italiano’s recent form has seen it slip to 17th. Huachipato is in 11th with 14 points.

Santiago Wanderers 0-2 Universidad Católica

Católica closed out Week 11 with a convincing win over ten-man Wanderers in Valparaíso last Monday, bookending the game with goals in either half, though the match was marred by a horrific leg break suffered by visiting defender Marko Biskupovic.

The visitors had raced to an early lead via a cross-cum-shot from the increasingly influential loan playmaker Darío Bottinelli and some appalling goalkeeping, before play was halted in the 24 minute as medics rushed to attend to Biskupovic. Marco Sebastián Pol cut down the defender with an appalling “striker’s tackle,” leading to a fracture of the tibia and fibula as well as a dislocation of the ankle joint. It is still too early to assess how successful Biskupovic’s surgery was, though doctors say a return to action within four to six months can be expected if all goes well. Pol later issued an apology for the tackle, though Biskupovic was in far from a forgiving mood after the injury, saying he wanted to “kill” the Wanderers man for what he fears could be a career ending injury.

Despite players from both sides appearing visibly distraught, play soon continued, and Wanderers went about closing up an understaffed shop. Católica managed a second breakthrough, however — in the 80th minute, striker Álvaro Ramos capped off a swift counter with a cool finish in the bottom left.

Everton 1-0 Unión La Calera

Struggling Everton began a vital two game win streak on Tuesday, downing La Calera at home with a solitary goal.

The winner arrived on 36 minutes — La Calera defender Mario Berrios was lucky to stay on the pitch after he kicked midfielder Fernando Saavedra in the face with a dangerously high clearance attempt, and Argentine striker Emiliano Romero rifled in the resultant penalty.

La Calera launched an aerial offensive in search of an equalizer though target men were not up for the job, meanwhile the visiting team could thank some catlike goalkeeping from Juan Ojeda for keeping the score modest.

Campeonato Carioca Group Stage Ends: Daily

Flamengo versus Cabofriense and Fluminense versus Vasco are semi-final ties after group stage ends.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The group stage of the 2014 Campeonato Carioca drew to a close yesterday, with the top four teams progressing to the semi-finals next week. Flamengo, Fluminense, Vasco and surprise package Cabofriense made the cut, with Botafogo finishing in a lowly ninth place with just four wins from fifteen games.

Flamengo won a goalfest 5-3 against Cabofriense yesterday at the Maracanã to confirm their dominance in the state championship. The two will also meet next week in the semis, as Fla won the group, earning 38 points in the process, and the Cabo Frio club finished in fourth.

Alecsandro bagged a brace and in truth the Rubro-Negro had put their opponents out of sight early in the second half, before Cabofriense staged a valiant comeback. Paulinho, Luiz Antônio and Mugni also netted as Mengo ran riot before the knock-out games, to be played this Wednesday and Saturday.

Fluminense finished runners-up and rounded off the group with a comfortable 3-1 win over Volta Redonda in Macaé. Coach Renato Gaúcho paired Fred and Walter in attack and the ploy paid off.

In the early days of what looks an encouraging partnership, both forwards got on the scoresheet prior to a semi-final clash with Vasco da Gama this week. Wágner netted Fluminense‘s third before Tiago Aamaral scored a consolation for Volta.

Vasco warmed up for their meeting with rivals Fluminense with a sound 4-0 thrashing of Duque de Caxias at São Januário Stadium. The result relegated their visitors, who will not compete in next year’s Carioca tournament after finishing bottom of the group with just nine points.

Striker Edmilson bagged a brace and currently leads the Carioca scoring charts. He has ten goals in fifteen games, one ahead of Flamengo striker Alecsandro, who has nine. Reginaldo and Everton Costa also got on the scoresheet as Vasco went to town. The latter has formed a dangerous partnership with Edmilson and the double act could eliminate Fluminense, with whom they go head-to-head on Thursday and Sunday.

Bauza no piensa irse de San Lorenzo

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de San Lorenzo, Edgardo Bauza, desestimó que pueda presentar la renuncia a su cargo por los malos resultados y destacó que ni perdiendo "18 partidos me voy a ir" del puesto.

"Ni que pierda 18 partidos me voy a ir. Confío en que vamos a revertir esta situación", expresó el técnico santafesino.

El Ciclón lleva cinco encuentros sin triunfos entre certamen Final y Copa Libertadores. Y en ambos frentes se le complica el acceso a la punta en el torneo local y la clasificación a segunda ronda en el campeonato sudamericano, respectivamente.

"Los últimos resultados no se condicen con el juego. Hemos tenido errores de los árbitros y lesiones que nos condicionaron" manifestó el ex-DT de Rosario Central y Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito, en declaraciones a Radio América.

Con relación al partido perdido 1-2 con Gimnasia en La Plata, en la tarde del domingo, Bauza esgrimió como excusa el hecho de que "antes de los 10 minutos pierdo a los dos marcadores centrales (Mauro Cetto y Carlos Valdés) por lesiones y me quedó un solo cambio por hacer", consideró.

El entrenador justificó su intención de defender con tres hombres: "La línea de 3 puede funcionar bien si me da el tiempo para trabajar", puntualizó Bauza.

De cara al partido del jueves en Ecuador, ante Independiente del Valle, por la penúltima fecha del grupo 2 de la Libertadores, el entrenador remarco que utilizará a Angel Correa y Nicolás Blandi como delanteros de punta.

Y el técnico rosarino confió en la posibilidad de poder usar a Julio Buffarini desde el minuto inicial.

Cavenaghi: "No vamos a especular, nos debemos una victoria de visitante"

BUENOS AIRES -- El delantero Fernando Cavenaghi afirmó que River Plate no saldrá a "especular" en el Superclásico frente a Boca, en la "Bombonera", porque el equipo se debe "una victoria de visitante".

"Va a ser parejo, y se va a llevar el triunfo el que aproveche mejor las pocas situaciones que tenga. Cuando planificás empatar, terminás perdiendo, y obviamente las derrotas en los clásicos duelen, sobre todo si hay intenciones de pelear arriba. Por eso no vamos a especular. Nos debemos una victoria de visitante y ojalá se de en este partido", sostuvo Cavenaghi.

El atacante relativizó el hecho de que River le haya el domingo a Lanús 2-0, en tanto que Boca apenas empató sin goles frente a Quilmes.

"(El de Boca) Fue un partido frío, sin público, hasta a Quilmes le jugó en contra no tener a su gente, pero los clásicos son totalmente distintos", advirtió el goleador "Millonario" en declaraciones a radio América.

Con miras al Superclásico, Cavenaghi agregó que su estrategia sería "ir a buscar el triunfo desde el arranque, la misma que va a implementar Ramón (Díaz, el director técnico), seguramente".

En cuanto a los recientes cuestionamientos que recibió el entrenador riojano, el goleador dijo que "hay muy poca tolerancia".

"Es bastante complicado lo que estamos viviendo, porque perdés un partido y se viene el mundo abajo. En lo personal, estoy contento con la cantidad de goles que tengo, aunque me gustaría haber hecho más. Hay encuentros que son cerrados; no me reprocho nada", precisó.

Daniel Villalva fue el jugador más desequilibrante frente a Lanús, por lo que Díaz deberá decidir si apuesta por mantener en el equipo al delantero correntino, o bien se inclina por el regreso de Teófilo Gutiérrez, quien se perdió el partido con Lanús por lesión.

Cavenaghi opinó que "son dos jugadores completamente diferentes", ya que "Teo se tira más al medio, arrastra muchas marcas y cumple a su vez funciones defensivas, mientras que ´Keko´ es más de desborde y centro".

Por último, y sobre la definición del Torneo Final, Cavenaghi señaló que "quedan nueve fechas y el que pierda va a quedar lejos de la punta, pero el torneo es tan irregular que se va a definir en la última".

Santos defender Neto calls for concentration in Paulista against Ponte Preta

Santos defender Neto has called on his teammates not to underestimate Paulista quarter final opponents Ponte Preta when the pair meet over this week to decide who will make the final four.

Neto told reporters that Ponte Preta are "a great team, very regular and hard to beat. We know that we face a very good team and we have to be prepared. It is just a game and we must not waver ad come out with the win."

"The problem is it is just 90 minutes and an error could cause an early exit from the tournament. We have to do our part to show our value."

The match, which will take place on Wednesday at the Belmiro, gives Santos an opportunity to reach the semi finals, alongside expected duo Palmeiras and Sao Paulo. Botafogo SP are favourites to see off Ituano to grab the last berth in the last four.

Palmeiras´ Wesley fit for Paulista quarter final against Bragatino

Palmeiras utility man Wesley Lopes is free for selection for his side´s Paulista quarter final against Bragatino on Thursday evening after recovering from a minor injury to his right thigh.

Palm are also expected to have Wendel, Wellington and Paraguayan William Mendieta at their disposal for the game after all three trained on Monday.

The game at the Pacaembu will see Palmeiras aim to take a step closer to clinching a 23rd Sao Paulo state championship, their last triumph coming in 2008.

The club have been beset by problems in the recent past, most notably a relegation from Brazilian Serie A in 2012, which they atoned for by winning the second division at a canter last year.

Riveros admits Gremio Gaucho match will be tricky

Wednesday evening will see Gremio take on Brasil de Pelotas in the Gaucho state championship semi finals, with the winner earning the right to face the winners of Internacional versus Caxias in the other final eliminator.

Having not won the title since 2010, Gremio are close to having the opportunity to add another title to their collection and midfielder Christian Riveros, of Paraguay, says his team are ready for the challenge: "This Brazilian team is well assembled tactically."

"It will be a tough match and we have to be ready for the difficulties. We are on track but we have not achieved anything yet."

Gremio reached the semi final by defeating Juventude 3-0, whist their opponents Brasil de Pelotas, something of a surprise package this year, beat Novo Hamburgo 2-0 to advance.

Wagner wants Carioca title to spur on Fluminense

Fluminenese midfielder Wagner has stressed the importance of winning the finals of the Carioca state championship as it could spur his team on to a successful national campaign, which gets under way in the middle of next month.

The Rio de Janeiro side have been fortunate enough to experience silverware in the past half decade and Wagner believes more could be round the corner if they maintain their form.

"If we become champions (of the Carioca), everything will change. The scenario changes and the Brazilian championship begins soon after. The semi final will be important and we have to be 100% connected and keep mistakes to a minimum."

Fluminense won the Carioca in 2012, the same year they went on to win the Campeonato Brasileiro.
