Liga MX Wrap: America crush rivals Guadalajara

America claimed a huge derby win over Guadalajara in the Liga MX on Sunday, while Cruz Azul slipped up again.

The battle between the Mexican top-flight´s two most successful clubs was one-sided as America crushed Guadalajara 4-0 in the ´El Clasico de Clasicos´.

Luis Gabriel Rey netted a brace in the opening 15 minutes at the Estadio Omnilife before Raul Jimenez and Luis Mendoza scored after the break.

The win lifted America to fourth in the Liga MX table, nine points adrift of stuttering league leaders Cruz Azul.

Cruz Azul suffered a 3-1 loss at home to Atlas on Saturday, failing to collect maximum points in the league for the third time in their past four outings.

But Sunday´s derby was the highlight of matchday 13 and America needed just 15 minutes to take control.

It was a simple opener on nine minutes as Rey was picked out at the back post and tapped in the easiest of goals.

Just six minutes later and Rey was at it again but with more style, as the forward picked up a loose ball and struck with a stunning 30-yard effort.

Jimenez scrambled in a third on 56 minutes before Mendoza completed the scoring with a lob soon after.

Cruz Azul´s advantage at the top has been cut to just a point after yet another loss, the latest at home to Atlas.

Marco Fabian had cancelled out Martin Barragan´s third-minute opener and the hosts looked the more likely to go ahead.

But Maikon Leite and Barragan both scored before half-time for eighth-placed Atlas and they held on.

Toluca closed in on Cruz Azul after Raul Nava´s 90th-minute winner saw them past Tigres UANL 2-1.

Costa Rica Primera Division Wrap: Herediano return to summit

Herediano returned to the top of the Costa Rica Primera Division table after easily accounting for Cartagines on Sunday.

Marvin Solano´s Herediano were taught a football lesson by defending champions Alajuelense midweek, crashing to a 5-2 defeat on the back of an Armando Alonso hat-trick at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto.

But Deportivo Saprissa´s 1-1 draw at Puntarenas opened the door for Herediano, who responded with an emphatic 3-0 victory over struggling Cartagines.

Herediano made a bright start to proceedings and were awarded a 27th-minute penalty, which was coolly converted by veteran attacker Minor Diaz.

The home side continued to peg away at Cartagines but had to wait until six minutes into the second half to double their advantage, with Olman Vargas heading home his first goal of the campaign.

Vargas was on target again two minutes from time, leaping highest to guide the ball home as Herediano made it five wins in succession on home soil.

The result saw Herediano move to 33 points alongside Saprissa but ahead on number of goals scored.

Elsewhere in Costa Rica, Alajuelense remain five points off the pace in third position after claiming a routine 2-0 win over Santos de Guapiles.

Alajuelense made a dream start at the Estadio Ebal Rodriguez Aguilar, with Jorge Davis breaking the deadlock inside the opening minute.

Camilo Aguirre put the result beyond seven minutes into the second half - his second goal in the space of a week.

Belen Siglo XXI continued their rise up the table, stunning Carmelita 2-1 thanks to first-half goals from Allan Duarte and Jose Varela.

Vinicio Alvarado´s men are now five points adrift of the top four following back-to-back wins.

In other results, Uruguay bounced back from their midweek defeat with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph at home to basement club Perez Zeledon, while Diego Diaz converted a 50th-minute penalty as Limon earned a 1-1 draw against UCR.

CONCACAF Champions League Preview: Cruz Azul hoping to halt form slump

Liga MX leaders Cruz Azul will hope they can halt their slump on Tuesday when they visit Tijuana in the CONCACAF Champions League semi-finals.

After starting Liga MX´s Clausura season with a draw and then eight straight victories, Cruz Azul have suffered three defeats in six matches, including a 3-1 loss at home to Atlas on Saturday.

The Mexican league high-flyers remain first in the table despite that defeat and should be confident against fellow Liga MX club Tijuana, who sit 10th, ahead of Tuesday´s semi-final first leg.

Tijuana also lost over the weekend, going down 2-1 at Queretaro, but the northerners have a formidable home record, having only lost once in 21 games in all competitions at the Estadio Caliente.

Cruz Azul are aiming to win their first continental title since 1997 and their maiden CONCACAF Champions League trophy.

The Mexico City-based club are the most successful side in the competition´s history alongside local rivals America, although all five of their titles came in the CONCACAF Champions Cup era.

By contrast, Tijuana are competing in the CONCACAF Champions League for the first time this season.

Argentine striker Mariano Pavone could be critical to Cruz Azul´s chances of halting their form slump and advancing past Tijuana in their two-legged semi-final.

Pavone has only scored eight goals in Liga MX this season, much less than his 20 last campaign, while he has failed to hit the back of the net in 10 of his past 11 matches.

But in a bonus for Cruz Azul, the 31-year-old forward did notch a hat-trick in his club´s most recent CONCACAF Champions League fixture, as they won 5-2 on aggregate over Sporting Kansas City to earn a semi-final berth.

Tijuana´s main threat up front will be Dario Benedetto - another Argentine - who has scored four goals in his team´s past five matches, including in their 4-2 aggregate triumph over Los Angeles Galaxy in the quarter-finals.

In the other semi-final, Alajuelense of Costa Rica will host Toluca, who sit one point behind Cruz Azul in Mexico.

Toluca defeated San Jose Earthquakes on penalties in the quarter-finals, while Alajuelense edged past Arabe Unido of Panama.

The Costa Ricans warmed up for Tuesday´s clash with a 2-0 win at Santos de Guapiles on Saturday, while Toluca trumped Tigres UANL 2-1.

Copa Libertadores Preview: Botafogo host Union Espanola in blockbuster

Leaders Botafogo can move a step closer to qualification from Copa Libertadores´ Group 2 when they play host to rivals Union Espanola.

Botafogo, Brazil´s Campeonato Carioca champions in 2013, and Chilean outfit Union Espanola will meet at the Estadio Jornalista Mario Filho on Wednesday with just one point separating both teams after four matchdays.

Eduardo Hungaro´s men have collected seven points from their opening four games, while Union Espanola have six points thus far.

Although both teams are not assured progression, with Independiente del Valle (five) and San Lorenzo (five) still in with a shout.

Botafogo are unbeaten at home in the Copa Libertadores this season but their recent run of form in all competitions has Union Espanola full of confidence heading into matchday five.

The Brazilian outfit edged Independiente del Valle two weeks ago but that is the team´s only win in eight previous outings, while Union Espanola have tasted defeat just once in their last eight games.

In Group 5, leaders Universidad de Chile welcome Cruzeiro to the Estadio Nacional Julio Martinez Pradanos on Thursday.

Universidad de Chile have won two consecutive games since they were trounced 5-1 by Cruzeiro on matchday two.

Ricardo Goulart starred with a hat-trick that day and Universidad de Chile will be out to avoid a repeat of that disastrous performance.

Uruguay´s Defensor Sporting can close the gap on their Chilean opponents when they play host to Peruvian outfit Real Garcilaso, who sit bottom of the group, on Tuesday.

In Group 4, cellar dwellers Santa Fe face an uphill task when Brazilian giants Atletico Mineiro visit Colombia on Thursday.

Since losing to Mineiro on the opening matchday, Santa Fe have lost and drawn to Venezuela´s Zamora in reverse fixtures to fall three points adrift of the qualifying spots.

Ecuador Primera A leaders Emelec will be aiming to bounce back from their league defeat to El Nacional when they go head-to-head against Brazil´s Flamengo in Group 7 action on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Brazilian club Gremio can leapfrog Newell´s Old Boys into top spot in Group 6 with victory over Atletico Nacional of Colombia on Wednesday.

Venezuela Primera Division Wrap: Trujillanos stay clear, Zamora lose

Venezuela Primera Division leaders Trujillanos continued their fine form as Zamora suffered a rare loss on Sunday.

A 1-0 win at home to Deportivo Tachira was all Trujillanos needed to maintain their two-point buffer at the top in the Clausura campaign.

James Cabezas scored the game´s only goal on 31 minutes at the Estadio Jose Alberto Perez, seeing Pedro Vera´s Trujillanos to their fifth straight win.

Apertura champions Mineros de Guayana are second and inflicted just Zamora´s second loss of the season with a 4-2 victory.

The in-form Juan Falcon scored for the sixth straight game to give Zamora the lead on 12 minutes.

Goals from Zamir Valoyes and Luis Vallenilla helped Mineros into the lead, but Ricardo Clarke levelled for Zamora two minutes before the break.

Yet they went into half-time behind when Ricardo Blanco struck for Mineros in first-half additional time.

Blanco´s goal just after the hour-mark sealed the result, leaving Zamora fourth and four points behind the leaders, albeit with two games in hand.

Tucanes struck twice in the opening 13 minutes on the way to a 2-1 win at Zulia which extended their unbeaten run to eight matches.

Caracas are unbeaten in 11 league matches this season, but they drew for the sixth time with a thrilling 2-2 draw at home to Deportivo Lara.

They looked set for their first loss when Edgar Perez Greco put Deportivo Lara ahead on 92 minutes, but Roberto Tucker struck a dramatic late leveller.

Lowly Estudiantes de Merida remain winless after a 1-1 draw at home to Deportivo Anzoategui.

Aragua and Atletico Venezuela played out a scoreless draw and Deportivo Petare edged Carabobo 1-0.

Ever Espinoza´s brace saw Llaneros de Guanare to a 3-1 win at home to Yaracuyanos and Deportivo La Guaira came from behind to beat Atletico El Vigia 2-1.

Uruguay Primera Division Wrap: Miramar Misiones game postponed, two others abandoned

Sunday´s game between Miramar Misiones and Penarol in the Uruguay Primera Division was postponed due to security fears.

The division´s bottom club were due to host Penarol, who lie sixth, but the executive board of the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) decided that the match would not take place due to concerns over a lack of security at the ground.

Elsewhere, Juventud´s meeting with Fenix was abandoned due to heavy rain, together with the match between Rentistas and River Plate.

Juventud and leaders Fenix were locked at 1-1, while the other game was goalless, and a statement on the AUF´s official Twitter page said that the matches would continue on Tuesday.

Wanderers remain a point behind Fenix and River Plate after a 3-2 home win over Danubio.

Gaston Rodriguez Maeso´s first-half brace put Wanderers in control.

Diego Martinones pulled one back 18 minutes from time, but Sergio Blanco restored his side´s two-goal advantage four minutes later before Jonathan Alvez set up a nervy finish with six minutes to go.

Cerro climbed up to 11th place with a 2-1 win over Cerro Largo thanks to goals from Juan Ignacio Delgado and Hector Acuna.

Defensor Sporting matched that result at home against Racing, in a game that saw both teams reduced to 10 men.

The home side went in front on the stroke of half-time through Giorgian De Arrascaeta, but were dealt a blow in the 55th minute when Gaston Silva saw red.

Leandro Ezquerra equalised a minute later, yet the visitors then saw Angel Cayetano dismissed in the 68th minute and Ignacio Risso popped up with a dramatic stoppage-time winner.

Elsewhere, Liverpool beat Nacional 1-0 and the game between Sud America and El Tanque Sisley ended goalless.

Colombia Primera A Wrap: Millonarios extend unbeaten run

Millonarios extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games in Colombia´s Primera A with a thumping victory over Patriotas Boyaca on Saturday.

A hat-trick from Dayro Moreno saw Millonarios defeat a hapless Patriotas Boyaca outfit 4-0 at the Estadio Nemesio Camacho.

https://www.youtube.com/…c4pF33VlCek

The win put Juan Manuel Lillo´s men level on 27 points alongside league leaders Atletico Nacional but second on goals scored.

Millonarios had won four games on the bounce heading into Saturday´s clash and they put themselves on track for yet another win thanks to Mayer Candelo´s 19th-minute opener.

The 37-year-old skipper was on hand to convert a goal-mouth scramble before feeding through Moreno for his first goal of the match on 40 minutes.

Moreno sprung the offside trap just past the hour mark to put the game beyond doubt and the striker, on loan from Club Tijuana, completed his hat-trick five minutes from time with a delightful chip inside the penalty area.

Atletico Nacional are still top of the table after salvaging a 2-2 draw at home to Santa Fe, who paid the price in the closing stages.

https://www.youtube.com/…epdjiP6LpIg

Santa Fe hit the front on two occasions courtesy of Sergio Herrera and Luis Seijas but Juan Valencia´s 83rd-minute strike earned the hosts´ a share of the spoils.

Elsewhere in Colombia, Junior moved to within three points of top spot thanks a hard-fought 1-0 win over La Equidad.

https://www.youtube.com/…JIuh3TjkIRQ

Edison Toloza´s effort on the stroke of half-time proved to be the difference as Junior made it three wins in the space of seven days.

https://www.youtube.com/…yCnF29KctD0

Ecuador Primera A Wrap: Emelec drop points, Independiente close in

Emelec dropped points for the second consecutive game as their lead atop of the Ecuador Primera A was reduced to one point over the weekend.

The defending champions were held to a goalless draw mid-week and their recent stuttering form continued after they were beaten 2-0 at El Nacional on Sunday.

https://www.youtube.com/…d6-Y7YBnCiY

A scoreless opening period at the Estadio Olimpico Atahualpa was soon forgotten as Pablo Palacios broke the deadlock on the hour-mark.

Former Ecuador international striker Carlos Tenorio put the result beyond doubt 10 minutes later with his fourth goal in five games.

Emelec´s lead at the summit is now one point, though they have played a game less than second-placed Independiente Del Valle, who edged lowly Mushuc Runa 1-0.

https://www.youtube.com/…mqHDC5rkdM4

Elsewhere in Ecuador, LDU Loja consolidated third spot with a 1-0 victory over Manta thanks to Jonny Uchuari´s first-half effort.

https://www.youtube.com/…EbcHsu10bP4

LDU Loja´s triumph moves them within two points of top spot and just one adrift of second.

Barcelona extended their unbeaten streak to three games following a come-from-behind 2-1 win at home to Universidad Catolica.

https://www.youtube.com/…dfb2m5k0GgQ

Armando Wila put the visitors ahead after 21 minutes but second-half goals from Cristian Penilla and Flavio Caicedo secured all three points for Barcelona, who are level on points with Catolica in fifth position.

In other results, three goals in the opening half saw Deportivo Quito account for cellar dwellers Deportivo Cuenca 3-1, while LDU Quito and Olmedo played out a 2-2 draw.
