Liga MX Wrap: Cruz Azul lead cut, Toluca edge Leon

Cruz Azul´s lead atop the Liga MX table has been cut to two points, after they fought back for a 2-2 draw at home to Pachuca on Saturday.

https://www.youtube.com/…5X8JXunTYwM

Luis Tena´s men trailed 2-0 courtesy of an Enner Valencia brace midway through the second half at the Estadio Azul.

Valencia´s first goal was a tap-in to an empty net, after Cruz Azul shot-stopper Guillermo Allison completely misjudged a through ball - and to make matters worse, embarrassingly crashed into his own defender Horacio Cervantes as the Ecuadorian scored the opener.

The former Emelec man doubled his tally in the 62nd minute, after a classy cut-back pass from substitute Hirving Lozano found the forward, who tucked away his shot.

Cruz Azul battled on, however, as Christian Gimenez scored after Pachuca custodian Oscar Perez saved his spot kick.

And in the first minute of injury time, American Michael Farfan - who only came on after 80 minutes - scored the winner.

Tena´s two substitutes for the game combined for the equaliser, as Cameroon international Achille Emana´s powerful shot was parried by Perez into the path of Farfan, who tucked away the all-important goal via his left boot.

The point ensured Cruz Azul still have a two-point lead at the top, although Toluca are within striking distance after their 2-1 home win over Leon.

Toluca had to come from behind after Ivan Pineda gave the visitors a 19th-minute lead.

But a drought-breaking win would not eventuate for Leon, now without a league victory in six, as Toluca stormed to victory via goals from Gabriel Velasco and Oscar Rojas.

Nine and 10 points off the pace respectively, Santos Laguna (third) and America (fourth) both recorded wins.

Carlos Quintero scored a hat-trick for Santos as they staved off an ever-resilient Atlante 4-3 at home, while America had a 1-0 win at bottom club Puebla courtesy of Miguel Layun´s second-minute strike.

Costa Rica Primera Division Wrap: Saprissa tighten grip on top spot

Deportivo Saprissa saw off arch-rivals Alajuelense 3-1 to tighten their grip on top spot in Costa Rica´s Primera Division.

Alajuelense took the lead in the Clasico del Futbol Costarricense - the biggest fixture in the Primera Division - but Saprissa were level by half-time through Kendall Watson.

A second-half penalty to Carlos Saucedo and Juan Bustos´ late goal, though, would see the hosts triumph.

The victory took Saprissa to 42 points at the top of the table, 10 clear of third-placed Alajuelense, while Herediano - who are second - dropped eight points behind the leaders following a 2-0 loss at UCR.

A goal-mouth scramble following a free-kick saw Alajuelense hit the front on the quarter-hour mark on Saturday with Alejandro Aguilar putting the ball in the net.

Saprissa equalised from a corner in the 36th minute as Watson headed home at the near post but the hosts had to wait until deep into the second half to take the lead.

The home side were given a penalty in the 77th minute and Saucedo made no mistake, sending Alajuelense goalkeeper Patrick Pemberton the wrong way to score.

Both sides finished the game with 10 players after Adolfo Machado and Jerry Palacios were red-carded in the 90th minute, while in second half stoppage time, Bustos capped off Saprissa´s victory, volleying the ball into the net from a corner.

With UCR trumping Herediano on Sunday, Saprissa are in a strong position in the Primera Division.

Jason Scott and Lucas Gomez scored goals either side of half-time as UCR (29 points) won their second straight game to move within three points of Alajuelense in fourth.

Belen Siglo XXI sit a point adrift of UCR after their 2-1 win at Cartagines, while Carmelita (25 points) are sixth thanks to their 2-0 victory against Puntarenas.

In other results, Limon cruised past Uruguay 3-0 and Perez Zeledon defeated Santos de Guapiles 3-1 to move off the bottom of the table.

Venezuela Primera Division Wrap: Mineros continue El Vigia´s woeful season

Mineros de Guayana continued Atletico El Vigia´s woeful season in Venezuela´s Primera Division on Sunday.

Zamir Valoyes struck a brace for Mineros in their 4-1 victory as they moved level on points with second-placed Zamora, who did not play over the weekend due to their Copa Libertadores commitments.

Trujillanos moved top of the division with 29 points after a 3-1 victory over Deportivo Anzoategui, one ahead of Zamora and Mineros, while Tucanes (27 points), Caracas (25) and Deportivo Tachira (22) all won to complete the top six.

In Guayana City, Richard Paez´s Mineros hit the front two minutes before half-time thanks to Valoyes´ penalty and they doubled their lead in the 69th minute when Ricardo Perez converted a 30-yard free-kick.

El Vigia hit back with 13 minutes left through Franco Arevalo but in an action-packed finish, Valoyes tapped home the rebound from Richard Blanco´s long shot, while Orlando Cordero capped off Mineros´ victory in the 90th minute.

The loss was El Vigia´s fifth consecutive defeat and their 12th from 14 games this season.

A first-half double from Freddys Arrieta set up Trujillanos´ triumph on Sunday as they edged ahead of Zamora, although the latter have two games in hand.

Tucanes won 1-0 at Deportivo La Guaira thanks to Raul Vallona´s goal, Romulo Otero struck the only goal of the game in Caracas´ victory against Yaracuyanos and Yoandri Orozco scored as Deportivo Tachira edged out Carabobo 1-0.

In other results, Deportivo Petare came from behind to draw 1-1 at Zulia, while Aragua and Estudiantes de Merida were held to scoreless draws by Deportivo Lara and Atletico Venezuela respectively.

Colombia Primera A Wrap: Atletico Nacional edge clear

Atletico Nacional moved clear at the top of Colombia´s Primera A after they prevailed in a high-scoring encounter with Fortaleza on Sunday.

Having led 2-0 and 4-1, Nacional held on for a 4-3 victory over Fortaleza, who dropped to the bottom of the table thanks to the loss, despite conceding twice in the final 10 minutes.

https://www.youtube.com/…12mraYcYFyI

George Saunders and Argemiro Vacca struck late for Fortaleza but it was not enough for the visitors, who remain winless in their past three matches.

Nacional´s win took them three points clear of Millonarios (30 points) at the top of the Primera A standings after the latter suffered a shock loss on Saturday at lowly Uniautonoma, who leapfrogged Fortaleza.

https://www.youtube.com/…N50pTWX1wAQ

In Medellin on Sunday, Nacional opened the scoring just after the quarter-hour mark in front of their home fans when Edwin Cardona´s free-kick found the back of the net after bouncing in front of Fortaleza goalkeeper Andres Mosquera.

The hosts led 2-0 in the 26th minute with Santiago Trellez stabbing his shot into the roof of the net after a cutback from Cardona.

The match exploded in the final half hour with Jorge Ramos putting Fortaleza on the scoreboard with a nice finish from Vacca´s through ball in the 65th minute before Nacional struck twice in quick succession.

Luis Paez struck in the 73rd minute for the league leaders, following good lead-up work by Jairo Palomino, while Cardona set up Nacional´s fourth goal, which was scored by Fernando Uribe five minutes later.

Just as Nacional looked comfortable though, Fortaleza responded again with Saunders scoring from a corner in the 80th minute before Alexander Jaramillo teed up Vacca with three minutes remaining.

The visitors could not find an equaliser, however, and Nacional held on for a crucial win.

On Saturday in Barranquilla, Uniautonoma forward Cristian Fernandes Mejia struck in the 50th minute to stun visiting Millonarios and end his team´s five-game losing streak.

Uniautonoma rose to 17th with 15 points, while Fortaleza (14 points) now prop up the table.

Junior, who sit third, could have jumped above Millonarios after that result but had already lost 3-0 at fifth-placed Once Caldas.

https://www.youtube.com/…bWeMQx_zPjE

Fourth-placed Santa Fe defeated Atletico Huila 2-1 to move within a point of Millonarios and Junior in the table, while La Equidad, who occupy sixth spot, overcame Medellin by the same scoreline.

Away at Barcelona, Independiente fell to a 2-0 defeat - which leaves them two points shy of league leaders Emelec.

LDU Loja are third on 24 points, after a 1-0 win at home to Olmedo.

https://www.youtube.com/…puL3XVW_5ng

Universidad Catolica consolidated fourth spot, with a 1-0 win away at Deportivo Quito their second in succession.

Armando Wila netted on the hour mark for Catolica.

Manta sit in sixth - level on points with Barcelona - after claiming a 2-1 win at El Nacional.

https://www.youtube.com/…D1pYD2WrXUo

Alberto Gomez and Jorge Palacios Avila were on target for Manta, before El Nacional´s Vinicio Angulo pulled a goal back inside the final 10 minutes.

The bottom of the table clash between Mushuc Runa and Deportivo Cuenca ended in a stalemate, with the sides sharing the spoils 1-1.

https://www.youtube.com/…C1J7LIUkvEw

Mushuc Runa had looked to put space on themselves and cellar-dwellers Cuenca with a 26th-minute goal to Carlos Quintero.

But Cuenca ensured just two points separate the teams, as Juan Cobelli equalised with 17 minutes to play.

Reigning champions Penarol claimed top spot in Uruguay´s Primera Division after Danubio stunned former leaders Fenix 2-1.

Penarol defeated Sud America 2-0 on Saturday to move above Fenix into first position in the table and when Danubio triumphed on Sunday, the title-holders were assured of top spot through 10 games.

Penarol lead the league on 20 points, one point ahead of Wanderers - who thrashed Miramar Misiones 5-0 on Sunday - with Fenix (18 points) in third, ahead of Danubio on goal difference.

On Saturday, a stunning long-range effort from Carlos Nunez put Penarol ahead just three minutes into the second half.

Nunez cut inside from the left, wheeling around onto his right foot at the top of the box and then unleashing a rocket into the top corner of the net.

Luis Aguiar capped off Penarol´s victory in the 86th minute, sliding in at the back post to tap in Marcelo Zalayeta´s cross.

Argentina Primera Division Wrap: Jara, Carrillo combine in Estudiantes win

Estudiantes retained top spot in Argentina´s Primera Division, after a 3-1 win at Quilmes on Saturday.

Guido Carrillo scored a brace for Mauricio Pellegrino´s men, with both goals assisted by fellow front man Franco Jara.Jara teed up the first goal of the game on 20 minutes at the Estadio Centenario Dr Jose Luis Meiszner, stabbing a through ball for Carrillo, who pipped Quilmes goalkeeper Silvio Dulcich to roll the ball into the back of the net.

Quilmes´ number nine Fernando Telechea then completed some fine lead-up work from the hosts, getting on the end of a dinked ball from Facundo Diz to lash home the equaliser, which went in off the left post.

Jonathan Silva regained the lead for Estudiantes in remarkable style, sending a 35-yard pearler into the back of the net via multiple deflections, the last of which was off goalkeeper Dulcich.

Jara was then the catalyst for Estudiantes´ third, as he was pushed over in the box, got back to his feet, rounded the keeper and chipped a cross to Carrillo - who simply had to tap into the gaping net.

River Plate ensured Estudiantes would only hold a one-point buffer at the top, after winning 2-0 at home to Atletico Rafaela.
