A conversation with Elías Figueroa, Chile’s greatest football legend

From overcoming polio aged 11, the defender known as the ‘red wall’ went on to become the national team’s saviour and an icon of religious worship.
A conversation with Elías Figueroa, Chile’s greatest football legend

Pele uttered one name when asked who the best defender he ever faced was — Elías Figueroa. Heralded as Chile’s greatest ever player, the imperious center-back overcame severe health problems before becoming South American Footballer of the Year three years running. But a career which took him across the world began on his country’s shores.

Founded in the port-city of Valparaíso in 1892, Santiago Wanderers is Chile’s oldest football club. The club’s name was created in honor of both the country’s capital and the British immigrants that introduced the sport to its shores, belying its location 75 miles west of the country’s capital.
Wanderers fans have watched defender Raúl Sánchez lead their team to a league title in 1958, loyal servant Juan Olivares Marambio clock up 286 appearances for the club in the 1960s, and Chile’s “Zidane” Jaime Riveros grace the field in more recent years, but they hold no player in higher regard than legendary defender Elías Figueroa.

Not only does the team’s player of the season receive the “Elías Figueroa Award”, but the club also invited its standard-bearer to inaugurate its brand new stadium, named after the defender himself, in February this year.

Elías lives close by with Marcela, his wife of more than 50 years, in the small seaside town of Reñaca. He traveled all over the world in his illustrious 20-year career, and continues to do so today as he works for the development of football in Chile through his foundation, Gol Iluminado. Its raison d’être is to “educate through sport” — in promoting sport as a fundamental part of a healthy lifestyle, it seeks to teach children in Chile important values both in play and in life.

The foundation takes its name from the goal Elías scored for Brazilian club Internacional in the championship final to hand Internacional its first ever national title, after which he made the transition from the city’s top defender to its demigod. His side had beaten Fluminense, the favorites, in the semi-final in the Maracana before welcoming Cruzeiro to the Estadio Beira-Rio for the final.

“We slept in rooms at the stadium that night. At six in the morning you could already hear the crowds outside the stadium. The match didn’t start until five in the afternoon but they opened the gates at midday and within half an hour it was completely full.”

He sits forward, growing animated as he builds the suspense that the fans equally had to endure that day, before arriving at his career-defining moment.

“The noise was deafening when we entered the tunnel. I was captain of the team, and I turned round and said to them, ‘It’s down to us now, not the crowd, and we’re not going to lose the campeonato here.’ We were awarded a free kick in the second half and I said to my teammate, ‘I’m going up and I’m going to score.’ It was an unbelievable moment when I saw my header go in, my teammates were jumping on me but I just said to them, ‘We have to carry on, we have to win,’ and, well, we did.”

The “gol iluminado” acquired its name from the lone ray of sun that penetrated the clouds at that moment and illuminated a small area on the edge of the six-yard box, the exact same spot where Elías connected with his match-winning header. Following the match, he was worshipped in a way that only a handful of footballers have ever been.

“As the captain of the team people were already talking about me, but things changed a little bit after that day. Some women brought their sick children to me hoping I’d cure them, while there were pregnant women that would grab my hand, wanting me to touch their stomachs,” he recalls, struggling to find a word to describe such an moment.

An extraordinary status for anyone to experience, it becomes even more so as he recounts the health problems he suffered as a child — in his early years, heart problems and severe asthma led doctors to tell his mother that he would never be able to run normally. If that wasn’t enough, at the age of 11 he was diagnosed with polio and spent a year in bed before learning to walk all over again.

He puts the overcoming of such problems down to perseverance, and believes the experience gave him a deep appreciation of life through which he always looks for the positives — qualities that he believes were at the heart of his success.

“Football was a great motivation for me to overcome those problems but I think perseverance has been the key word in my life. I persevered to be able to run without suffocating, and I achieved it. I persevered to be able to walk again, and I achieved it,” he says with an emotional pride behind his words, as if he still sometimes struggles to believe it today.

That tenacity would mark his career, a notable example coming in a match against Argentine club Racing de Avellaneda.

“I got kicked in the head during the match and only really came round in the showers after the game,” he recalls, sitting back and laughing. “I asked my teammates what had happened and was told I’d been out there the whole 90 minutes. I thought they were pulling my leg — I didn’t remember anything about the game, anything at all.”

It was that kind of dogged determination that served him especially well after he made the switch to the Brazilian league at the age of 25, joining Internacional from Uruguayan side Peñarol. The desire to test himself against the best underlined this decision, where he would face an array of footballing legends such as Pele, Rivelino and Jairzinho, the lynchpins of Brazil’s 1970 World Cup winning squad.

“I had a few options at the time — renew my contract with Peñarol, go to Real Madrid, who wanted me, or go to Brazil. I chose Brazil because that’s where the champions of the 1970 World Cup were playing. It was an attractive league with a very high standard of football, but it went well for me.”

This understatement is indicative of his modesty — prolific goalscorers such as Zico, Rivelino and the Uruguayan Fernando Morena may have grabbed the headlines during each season but it was the tenacious defender that pipped them to the South American Footballer of the Year award three years running, from 1974 to 1976. It is almost inconceivable that such an achievement will ever be matched by another defender — only two have won the award since: Argentine center-back Oscar Ruggeri in 1991 and Brazilian right-back Cafu in 1994. For Elías, winning the award three times in a row is the highlight of his career, his proudest achievement.

He looks back on his time with Peñarol as his most formative years, crucial to his development both as a player and a person after moving there aged 18. There, playing with the Copa Libertadores and World Champions, he added physicality to his technical prowess and mature reading of the game, earning him the nickname “Don Elías”.

He left Brazil before such qualities started to wane, deciding with Marcela in 1977 that the time was right to return to Chile. He took a wage cut in doing so, joining a lesser-known Palestino side where as captain he guided the team to its second ever league title and a 46-match unbeaten run.

Following that spell, he retired from international duty and was persuaded to sign for Fort Lauderdale Strikers in Florida, USA, an area he had always been drawn to. However, his time there was cut short and he was asked by the Chilean football association to return to Chile.

“I had a year and a half there and I was ready to wind down, but then came the 1982 World Cup,” he recounts. “I had a phone call from the national coach saying that he had problems in the middle of defence and that he needed me there. It was difficult to leave Florida behind, but I could never say no to my country.”

He sits forward as he explains why: “Playing for Chile is one of the only things that is borne of a childhood dream – it’s rare for an eight or nine year old to sleep with a law book, or a stethoscope under the pillow, dreaming of being a great lawyer or doctor in the future. But how many kids sleep with a football by their side, dreaming about playing football for their country in future?” He smiles. “And how many make it? Those that do have achieved their dream.”

For Elías it was a far from straightforward journey. His was a difficult path and one in which he broke rules and surpassed expectations at every step. “I wasn’t supposed to be able to run like a normal child, but I did it. Everyone told us our marriage wouldn’t last, and it’s lasted over 50 years.”

A golden rule of football is that people want to see players score goals. Most players strive to make the crowd roar — for Elías, there was nothing better than silencing it. Perhaps his formative years, in which he gained his deep-rooted desire to subvert people’s expectations, made it inevitable that he would end up in central defence trying to stop them. The success he would have in doing so, however, none could have predicted.

Carioca klubberne ser rigtig skidte ud i år.
Tjo..

Racing: Saja trabajó aparte y vuelve Cerro
