Liga MX Preview: Cruz Azul out to break Morelia drought

Liga MX leaders Cruz Azul can increase their buffer prior to the weekend, when they travel to Morelia on Friday.

Through 15 rounds, Guillermo Vazquez´s men are two points clear at the helm from rivals Toluca, who reduced the gap last weekend after Cruz Azul were held to a draw at home to Pachuca.

The top two sides have 10 wins each, with Cruz Azul´s three draws the difference - and they can boot five points clear before Toluca play on Saturday.

Cruz Azul, though, will have to turn around a poor recent record in Morelia, which has seen them fail to win there in their past seven attempts.

Morelia sit in mid-table on 18 points, just one above third-last Monterrey, and only three off sixth-placed Pachuca.

Toluca are on the road at Atlas, also on 18 points, with Jose Cardozo´s men high on confidence after holding Cruz Azul to a scoreless draw in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League final in Azul.

It was their third unbeaten result in succession, after their semi-final second leg win over Alajuelense was followed by a 2-1 league win over Leon.

Toluca´s recent record at Atlas´ Guadalajara home is positive, with two wins in their past three trips there - including a 3-1 win on their last visit in September 2012.

Also on Saturday, fourth-placed America host Queretaro looking to improve on their horrid record at their Estadio Azteca of late.

In front of their home faithful, America have just one point from their past five, with their brilliant away record of late - 10 points from four trips - has held them in good stead in the table.

Santos Laguna (third) welcome Chiapas to Torreon, having won their past five home games in all competitions, albeit with just one clean sheet in that run.

Pachuca host Puebla, Veracruz are on the road at Monterrey while Leon accommodates Tigres UANL and Atlante are at home to Tijuana.

On Sunday, Pumas UNAM - fifth on 22 points - take on eighth-placed Guadalajara, with the latter able to usurp their opposition on the table with a victory.

Copa Libertadores Wrap: Lanus, Cruzeiro strike late

Lanus and Cruzeiro left it late to grab a win and draw respectively in the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday.

Guillermo Barros Schelotto´s Lanus side claimed a 2-1 victory at home to Santos Laguna in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie.

Carlos Quintero put the visiting Mexicans ahead just before the hour-mark, only for Argentina´s Lanus to respond.

Facundo Monteseirin levelled and Matias Martinez was the hero with a dramatic winner in the dying seconds.

Quintero fired Pedro Caixinha´s Santos Laguna into a 58th-minute lead, controlling a throw-in before smashing a finish into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Lanus responded eight minutes later through Monteseirin, who volleyed home a Diego Gonzalez pass from inside the area.

There was to be late drama and, much to the delight of the home fans, it benefitted Lanus.

A set-piece whipped in from the right went uncleared and Martinez headed in the loose ball to give his side a 95th-minute winner.

Cruzeiro also left it late, but their 94th-minute goal from Miguel Samudio was an equaliser to give them a 1-1 draw at home to Cerro Porteno.

The Paraguayans took a 32nd-minute lead as Angel Romero tapped in from close range, and they looked headed for victory.

With just 20 seconds remaining of additional time, Samudio struck after a scramble in the area, with his effort going through a sea of bodies.

In Mexico, Leon came from behind to draw 2-2 at home to Bolivia´s Bolivar.

Luis Montes and Juanmi Callejon traded first-half goals before the visitors went ahead through Juan Carlos Arce´s 71st-minute goal.

When Juan Gonzalez saw red for Leon, the hosts looked certain to go into the second leg with a one-goal deficit.

But Mauro Boselli netted with four minutes remaining to see Leon to an unlikely draw.

Colombia Primera A Wrap: Santa Fe, Itagui held at home

Santa Fe and Itagui were both kept to home draws in Colombia´s Primera A on Wednesday.

Third-placed Santa Fe twice fought back from a goal down to earn a 2-2 draw against Uniautonoma.

The Estadio Nemesio Camacho ´El Campin´ hosts in Bogota trailed at half-time, and again with 15 minutes to play, but bravely rescued a point to prolong their unbeaten streak to five league matches.

In each of their previous four league contests, Santa Fe had scored first, but Uniautonoma broke that statistic when John Mendez netted in the 43rd minute.

Wilder Medina drew the hosts level, as he got on the end of a delightful through ball to round the goalkeeper and score with a simple tap-in on 71 minutes.

However, it looked as though the three points were heading home with Uniautonoma, when Michael Barrios reinstated the visitors´ lead four minutes later.

Barrios´ shot lacked power, but Santa Fe goalkeeper Camilo Vargas was still unable to keep out the effort, despite getting a hand on the on-target effort.

Luis Arias got on the end of a low cut-back pass on 80 minutes, to ensure Santa Fe of a point.

Meanwhile, Atletico Nacional equalised with seven minutes to play to grab a 1-1 draw at Itagui and extend their lead at the top of the table.

Atletico moved four points clear, as Juan Valencia´s 83rd-minute goal cancelled out Yessi Mena´s penalty on the stroke of half-time.

The leaders had Oscar Murillo sent off in the dying stages, after he received a second yellow card.

Osella aseguró: "Yo no le voy a quitar la ilusión a la gente"

ROSARIO -- El entrenador de Colón de Santa Fe, Diego Osella, auguró que si su equipo sigue ganando "estará en al pelea" por el título, aunque volvió al primer puesto insistió que el primer objetivo es "salvarse" del descenso.

"Yo no le voy a quitar la ilusión a la gente. Creo que una cosa lleva a la otra, así que si seguimos ganando vamos a estar peleando (por el campeonato)", dijo Osella.

Sin embargo agregó que "repito que el primer objetivo, con entrega y compromiso, es salvar al equipo del descenso, y para eso es importante llegar a los 31 puntos".

Con respecto al triunfo conseguido hoy Osella destacó la paciencia y la compenetración que tuvieron sus jugadores para cumplir todo lo que él les pidió.

Barros Schelotto: "Era importante ganar para tener cierta ventaja allá"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Lanús, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, enfatizó que "era importante ganar, para tener cierta ventaja" en el encuentro de vuelta ante Santos Laguna tras la victoria 2-1 conseguida en el Estadio Néstor Díaz Pérez.

"Lo más importante de todo era ganar, sin dejar de lado la forma. Era importante ganar para tener cierta ventaja allá", recalcó el "mellizo" tras el agónico triunfo ante los mexicanos en el encuentro de ida de los octavos de final de la Copa Libertadores.

Y agregó: "Fue importante haber ganado porque es mejor que haber empatado. Es bueno el resultado, es buena la reacción del equipo y la actitud del segundo tiempo, porque creo que ahí emparejamos un poco el juego".

Con este resultado, el conjunto granate tendrá la posibilidad de empatar o ganar para acceder a los cuartos de final de la Copa por primera vez en su historia.

"El partido no tuvo grandes situaciones de gol, el empate estaba bien, pero aprovechamos la última pelota parada", resaltó Barros Schelotto.

Por otro lado, el entrenador se lamentó por el tanto que convirtió la visita y señaló que "ninguno de los dos equipos pudo prevalecer sobre el otro".

Con respecto al encuentro de vuelta, que se jugará el próximo 24 de abril en Torreón, agregó: "Me imagino que Santos Laguna va a ser mas ofensivo, que va a tratar de salir a buscar el gol y el resultado. Nosotros trataremos de buscar un gol y la clasificación".

Ramón Díaz sobre su agradecimiento: "Le pedí disculpas a todo el mundo"

LA PLATA -- El entrenador de River, Ramón Díaz, confesó haber pedido "disculpas a todo el mundo" y que "nunca" hablaría para perjudicar al club y sus hinchas.

Desde que agradeció el apoyo de la barra brava de River, se sucedieron los cuestionamientos, del gobierno, y de la dirigencia de River, cuyo presidente Rodolfo D´Onofrio le advirtió que no soportará otra de esas.

Este miércoles el secretario de Seguridad, Sergio Berni, reclamó que Ramón se retracte e insistió que se estudia una sanción al DT, en tanto su segundo, Darío Ruiz calificó de "lamentable" los dicho del entrenador.

Ramón hablaba del partido con Estudiantes y de lo bueno que se iba a poner el campeonato cuando se refirió al penal que le dio Germán Delfino a Estudiantes y luego atajó Leandro Chichizola. Fue el prólogo para referirse al tema que lo comprometió.

"No lo vimos el penal, estábamos muy lejos y con tranquilidad lo vamos a ver y analizar", dijo Ramón y sacó a relucir lo que pasó el domingo.

"Es difícil hablar en caliente, ya me pasó el otro día", reaccionó Ramón y aseguró: "Ya le pedí disculpas a todo el mundo, a la gente". "Nunca digo nada para comprometer al club o a los hinchas y menos a mi familia", enfatizó.

Pareció una quejar de que se hablara como tal cual ocurrió de ese agradecimiento a la pesada tribunera.

"Fue la semana que más psicológicamente trabajé con ellos porque se habló de River, de muchas cosas y poco de los futbolístico", sostuvo.

Del partido dijo que River "pudo haber perdido y también ganado" y que con Colón puntero "va a haber pelea hasta el final".

Bianchi: "Seguro que la definición es una de nuestras falencias"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Boca Juniors, Carlos Bianchi, se escudó en el planteo que le opuso San Lorenzo para defender la mediocridad de una nueva producción de su propio equipo.

"Hoy era difícil jugar, ellos perdían la pelota y se ponían ocho o nueve jugadores atrás. Contra Colón había pasado algo parecido y así se hace muy difícil", argumentó Bianchi en conferencia de prensa, tras el 0-0 ante los azulgranas en La Bombonera, por la decimocuarta fecha del Torneo Final.

El Virrey tuvo que salir a defenderse porque el descolorido empate dejó a los xeneizes una vez más a ocho puntos de la cima, la que comparten Estudiantes de La Plata y Colón de Santa Fe, con el agravante de que quedan apenas cinco capítulos para que culminación de la temporada.

"Seguro que la definición es una de nuestras falencias, hay equipo que crean una situación de gol y ganan el partido 1 a 0. Nosotros hemos tenido pocas, pero tuvimos tres claras y no las convertimos", sostuvo Bianchi al referirse al frustrante 0-0 ante el Ciclón, conjunto que afrontó veinte minutos con un futbolista menos por la expulsión de Leandro Romagnoli y que ya en tiempo de descuento también sufrió la tarjeta roja que el árbitro Diego Abal le sacó a Néstor Ortigoza.

"A pesar de un primer tiempo muy discreto y un segundo un poco mejor, tuvimos el manejo del balón, el manejo del partido. Terminamos igualados cero a cero porque las pocas situaciones de gol que tuvimos no las concretamos", insistió el director técnico de los auriazules.

Al referirse a la campaña en esta competencia doméstica, Bianchi volvió a insinuar que fue injusta la derrota por 2-1 en el Superclásico, dado que por el décimo episodio River Plate se impuso en La Bombonera.

"Empatamos partidos que tendríamos que haber ganado y eso hace que no tengamos los puntos que tendríamos que tener. Los partidos que perdimos merecíamos perderlos, salvo uno, pero después los demás, partidos que nos se ganaron fue por nuestra falta de eficiacia", evaluó el conductor boquense.

En cuanto al cotejo ante San Lorenzo, lo que más valoró Bianchi fue que el oponente llegó muy poco hasta la valla de Agustín Orion. "Si quiero destacar algo pienso que ante un equipo tan difícil como es San Lorenzo, que tiene un contrgolpe bastante complicado, jugadores muy rápidos, salvo una jugada de (Angel) Correa nunca nos complicaron", rescató Bianchi.

En otras de sus respuestas, el adiestrador remarcó que "los jugadores de Boca dan todo lo que tienen", por lo que desestimó que el problema radicara en la falta de actitud.

Y con respecto a qué lo preocupa más, Bianchi admitió que tanto el juego del equipo como los resultados. "La dos cosas, pienso que tenemos que rendir más y los resultados no son satisfactorios, para nada", reconoció.

The man who forgot the value of Atlante

MEXICO CITY -- The "Tigre" dynasty runs in his blood. A successful Mexican businessman who once had control of the Grupo Televisa Football Board, dressed the Mexican national team with its brand -- Aba Sport -- during a World Cup qualifying campaign, and headed the "rescue" of the Mexican national team before the 2002 World Cup. Today, Alejandro Burillo Azcarraga has lost some of his longstanding presence in the sport -- he´s still a successful businessman, but his precious and cherished Atlante has said its goodbyes to Liga MX.

During the 1990s, Burillo Azcarraga was one of the big fish in Mexican soccer. He was involved in the most relevant matters, not only regarding Atlante, but the other teams owned by Grupo Televisa as well: Necaxa and America. The Mexican national team also benefited from his valuable leadership when he was head of the National Teams Committee. After sitting on top, he slowly started to lose ground, and was left with just his Atlante.

Backed by Televisa, he founded the Aba Sport company, which designed and produced the uniform that Mexico wore in the 1998 World Cup in France.

In 1996, he founded Grupo Pegaso, which came to own a phone company as well as investments in banks, hotels, radio stations and of course, soccer teams. There was a time when multiple ownership was even more blatant in Mexican soccer, when Burillo Azcarraga had three teams in the First Division (Atlante, Veracruz and Jaguares de Chiapas), and two in the Primera Division A [Second Division] (Acapulco and Zitacuaro).

His greatest contribution to Mexican soccer can be considered the "gift" of the High Performance Centre, the complex where the Mexican national team is coached and hold training camps. The creation of this place came after payment of the five million dollars that it cost to play a promotion match to stay in the top level after the team relegated in 2001. The complex, previously known as Pegasus High Performance Centre, was sold by Burillo Azcarraga to the Mexican Football Federation, with the discount of the promotion money.

Soccer and television have been Burillo Azcarraga´s greatest pleasures. In 2000, he sold the shares that he held in Televisa to his cousin, Emilio Azcarraga Jean. His departure from the main Mexican television network meant starting from scratch in subsequent business ventures. Atlante has always been affected by the situation of Burillo´s companies; his perceptions about soccer, always seeking government support to address the finances of the teams, which eventually buried the Potros de Hierro.

In the 2007 Apertura tournament, soccer made him smile for the last time. The title that Atlante won in their first campaign played in Cancun meant his maximum achievement in soccer for Burillo Azcarraga. The blue and red colors seemed that they would have deep roots in the Mexican Caribbean; all was joy and happiness. The inertia of the title led the Potros to play the Club World Cup the following year, where they were exhibited before the world and were eliminated at the expense of Pep Guardiola´s FC Barcelona.

Over time, key signings faded away along with Burillo Azcarraga´s interests for the team. The government of Quintana Roo stopped supporting the team like before; they began to lose sponsors, to the extent that the club was dressed by Garcis (Atlante leader Jose Antonio Garcia´s company), and only Grupo Pegaso sponsored it. Atlante ceased to be a profitable business for the Mexican businessman.

Wrong decisions, poor performance of his signings and no support from his home crowd eventually buried Atlante. In particular, the past six short tournaments were forgettable for the blue and red shirts. In the current Clausura 2014 they tried to mend the situation, but little can be done when they´ve done everything wrong for two-and-a-half years. During this time, the weight of Burillo Azcarraga in Atlante was forgotten. Although the team is still owned by him, it passed from being one of his priorities to just one more of his businesses.

Now, Burillo Azcarraga has the difficult task of starting from scratch with Atlante. He already did it in television. He was erased after leaving Televisa, but he found an interesting niche in the U.S. with the Hispanic market. The Mexican businessman should remember what Atlante´s colors mean for him and for thousands of faithful fans.

The Potros are no longer elite; Alejandro Burillo Azcarraga is no longer a heavyweight in Mexican soccer. One of the most important men in recent decades, he has lost much of the value that he had left in national soccer.
