Report: Internazionale lead Liverpool in race to sign Cruzeiro midfielder Nilton

Internazionale are closing in on a deal for Cruzeiro midfielder Nilton, according to reports.

Tuttosport claims that the Nerazzurri have targeted the Barra do Garças native as a replacement for veteran Esteban Cambiasso, who is expected to move to Major League Soccer in the summer.

Liverpool and Valencia are also believed to be interested in Nilton, but Tuttosport suggests Inter are the favourites to secure his signature and claims a deal could be agreed for around £3.5 million.

Nilton, 26, joined Cruzeiro from Vasco da Gama in 2013. Last season, he scored seven goals in 30 appearances, as they won the Brasileirão.

Brazil to face Argentina in October of this year

Brazil will face arch rivals Argentina in a post-World Cup friendly in the Bird´s Nest Stadium in Beijing on October 11.

The glamour match, which will give fans a chance to cure their respective World Cup hangovers, is known as the Super Clasico of the Americas and is as keenly contested a national derby as there is going.

The date is an official FIFA international one, which means that both sides should be at close to full strength, a factor that has in recent years hampered this type of fixture.

In their previous 104 encounters, the Selecao have won 41 and lost 38, drawing 25 times, and have scored 162 goals to their opponent´s 160.

It is sure to be either a World Cup-winning party for one of the sides or a quick chance to revamp following the conclusion of the tournament on July 13.

It could even be a World Cup final rematch...

Flamengo 2014 Brasileirão Season Preview

Last week can only be described as ‘bittersweet’ for Flamengo fans all over the world. On Wednesday, Flamengo lost to Mexican side Léon in front of almost 60,000 fans at the Maracanã, and were eliminated at the group stage of the Copa Libertadores.

Sunday, on the other hand, saw Flamengo draw 1-1 with arch-rivals Vasco da Gama thanks to a controversial goal scored in the 91st minute, which saw them win the State Championship for the 33rd time in their history. The bittersweet feeling comes from the fact that most Flamengo fans would rather have seen the team progress to the knockout stage of the international competition, than see the team win another state championship, which in recent years has become something of a burden to most big clubs in the country.

This bittersweet feeling should also be a warning to “Flamenguistas” when it comes to the 2014 Brazilian Série A. Flamengo’s early demise in the Libertadores was due to several shortcomings against sides who, if not technically better, as was the case with Léon, were tactically better, as was the case with the Bolivian side, Bolívar.

In the local Carioca state league, things were much easier as the adversaries were far weaker, with the only defeat in the whole competition being the 3-0 loss to Fluminense. Often playing in stadiums which held at times less than a thousand people, Flamengo’s victorious state campaign should not be seen as a sign that things will go smoothly in the national league.

There were moments against some teams in the State Championships, and especially in the Copa Libertadores, when Jayme de Almeida’s team seemed more like a bunch of individuals than a cohesive unit. The transition from defence to attack was, in many cases, poorly executed, and the team often struggled to find any space against the more organised defensive lines.

The team still hasn’t got used to playing without Elias, last season’s most important player, and with the temporary loss of Luiz Antônio, they had to replace two defensive midfielders with Muralha and Cáceres, who were far from impressive.

Of the new players, only winger Éverton and forward Alecsandro look like positive acquisitions. Erazo is only the fourth option at centre back, Elano is plagued with injuries, Márcio Araújo lacks the finesse of Elias, and attacking midfielder Mugni alternates his good moments with times when you can easily forget he is on the pitch. Léo has a little more to prove if he wants to replace the experiences Léo Moura at right back next season.

On the bright side, two of Flamengo’s younger players seem to be improving by the day. 24-year-old attacker, Gabriel, had a great start last season but couldn’t maintain it. This season he seems to have improved wildly, and has been one of de Almeida’s most used players so far. Centre back Samir, who also appears to be improving exponentially with each minute spent on the pitch, could attract bids from big European clubs if he keeps up this progression.

Economically, Flamengo will try to take advantage of having the biggest fanbase in the country, and will host some matches away from Rio in order to cash in on their nationwide support. Although this strategy might be lucrative, it might also hamper the team’s preparation in the long run.

Trying to predict the outcome of the Brazilian league can be a thankless task, and one which often leaves us staring at the league table, baffled by how could some teams perform so well and others so poorly. Thoughts such as, “how could anyone have guessed that a team that was almost relegated last season would end winning it”, and vice-versa, being all too common. Expect Flamengo to be anywhere from 3rd place to 8th place!

Although the team is not brilliant, Flamengo appear to have a squad depth which few other teams can boast (Botafogo being a prime example). With the three strongest teams in the country still fighting for the Libertadores, and the big teams from São Paulo performing way below expectations, the optimistic Flamengo fan believes that the team will manage to qualify for the Libertadores next year, either with a top four finish or a Brazilian Cup win. The pessimist believes that, in the end, they’ll just be a midtable team. Hoping that Flamengo finally win their seventh Brazilian title is unrealistic, as is imagining a season where we struggle against relegation.

Santos 2014 Brasileirão Season Preview

Santos come in this year’s Brasileirão on the back of six consecutive appearances in the final of the Campeonato Paulista. It’s a run that stretches back to Neymar’s debut season as a professional back in 2009. However, the club’s displays in the league in recent years lie at the other end of the spectrum. The last serious charge for the title was all the way back in 2007. Will this year be an different?

The most accurate – if a bit boring – answer is that it’s hard to say. It certainly is a squad capable of challenging for the ultimate prize. With a good mixture of old heads and promising young talent at his fingertips, at times Oswaldo de Oliveira had Santos playing some eye-catching football based on speed and intricate elaboration in midfield. However, this state is one that was never maintained for very long, even in the less competitive environment of the Paulistão.

Dreadful performances were almost just as common. It was clear that the frequency of the the latter increased with the integration of Brazilian football’s new most expensive signing, Leandro Damião, into the team. So far he hasn’t lived up the standard expected of a striker worth one tenth of his transfer fee, and the team’s on-field dynamic has suffered with his presence. Still, it’s unfair to throw all the rotten fruit and vegetables at the 24 year old.

Even at the team’s best, the absence of a true creative midfielder to set the tempo was glaring, and the options to fill this hole are unproven. Another problem for Santos fans to fret over early on is the defense, which hasn’t looked particularly solid. This was due in large part to the long term injuries suffered by both first choice centerbacks. Until their return during the break for the World Cup (the equivalent of nine matchdays), that reduces the pool for both positions to that of only slightly competent reserves and raw youngsters.

This means that the demand for weekly heroics from Aranha will be even higher than last year. The goalkeeper has proved himself to be one of the best in his position in the country after replacing Rafael (now of Napoli) as Santos’ no.1. Santistas need not fear, though. It is unlikely that Aranha’s halo will disappear anytime soon.

Further forward Arouca seems to be finally emerging from the slumber he entered after winning the Copa Libertadores in 2011. At his best he is capable of dominating any midfield with his energy and drive. Even if Arouca does reach his zenith again, most eyes will still be on his midfield colleague, Cicero. When Neymar departed last year, the versatile midfielder was the one who emerged as the team’s talisman with his goalscoring prowess. Whether it be a goal from a freekick, from long range, or from a towering header, you name it, Cicero can produce it.

Among the bevy of youngsters in the squad looking to stand tall besides these experienced campaigners, there are three who particularly stand out. Alison is one of the best defensive midfielders in Brazil, and his bulldog-esque approach has cowed many a forward.

Gabriel may just be 17 years old, but he is already the club’s joint top scorer for the year. The nascent signs of a wonderful player in the making are already evident, and the forward will surely play a huge part in Santos’ fortunes.

However, the pick of the bunch at this point is Geuvanio. The prodigal son returned from the wilderness (Portugal) a couple of months ago, and surprisingly became an indispensable cog of the team during the Campeonato Paulista. The fact that he has received the no.10 shirt in Santos’ new permanent numbering system speaks volumes.

Martín Palermo asumió en Arsenal: "Los objetivos son a corto plazo"

BUENOS AIRES -- Martín Palermo fue presentado como nuevo entrenador de Arsenal y admitió que "los objetivos son a corto plazo".

El ex-DT de Godoy Cruz reveló que se dio todo muy rápido, cuando se decidió la salida de Gustavo Alfaro. Y aseguró que no se sentirá "menos que nadie" si tiene que consultar a su antecesor, porque conoce muy bien el club.

"Se ve que el grupo está golpeado; trataremos de darle confianza a los jugadores. Hay que sumar puntos lo más rápido posible", dijo Palermo en la conferencia de prensa de su presentación como flamante DT.

Palermo remarcó que primero deben pensar en el Lanús de los Schelotto y recién el lunes concentrarse en los octavos de la Copa Libertadores.

"No es lindo ver a Arsenal último; los objetivos son a corto plazo... sumar es lo importante", agregó el exgoleador..

No obstante, dijo que "es un lindo desafío la Copa Libertadores" y elogió el juego de Unión Española, de Chile, rival de octavos de Arsenal.

"La idea es de a poco cambiar algunas cosas desde lo táctico para que Arsenal tenga más protagonismo en el juego", expresó Palermo en conferencia de prensa luego de dirigir su primera práctica al frente del plantel.

"Es un lindo desafío y venimos a aportar nuestros conocimientos y experiencia. Además, reemplazar a un técnico muy exitoso como Gustavo Alfaro nos genera una mayor obligación", manifestó Palermo, quien anteriormente dirigió a Godoy Cruz luego de retirarse del fútbol como goleador histórico de Boca Juniors.

El Titán sucede a Alfaro, quien logró cuatro títulos: Copa Sudamericana (2007), Torneo Clausura (2012), Recopa Argentina (2012) y Copa Argentina (2013), y viene de clasificar por primera vez al equipo a los octavos de final de la Copa Libertadores.

Palermo, quien debutará el domingo ante el Lanús de su exsocio en la delantera xeneize Guillermo Barros Schelotto por la 15ta. fecha del Torneo Final, señaló además que sus principales objetivos son sacar a Arsenal de la última posición del certamen local y seguir avanzando en la Libertadores.

"Pensamos fundamentalmente en sumar puntos en el campeonato local porque no es lindo ver a Arsenal en la última posición", resaltó el oriundo de La Plata, de 40 años, que estará acompañado en el cuerpo técnico por Roberto Abbondanzieri y Rolando Schiavi.

"Y en la Copa Libertadores trataremos de seguir avanzando porque para nosotros también es lindo el desafío por ser la primera experiencia", aclaró el DT, que al frente de Godoy Cruz obtuvo 14 triunfos, 17 empates y 13 derrotas.

El exgoleador de Boca Juniors y Estudiantes arribó a las 8 al club junto a su cuerpo técnico y fueron recibidos por el presidente de Arsenal, Julio Grondona (hijo), quien le mostró el predio, lo presentó al plantel y luego también en la conferencia de prensa le dio la bienvenida públicamente.

"Quiero agradecerle el trabajo realizado al anterior cuerpo técnico de Gustavo Alfaro, el más exitoso en la historia de Arsenal, y también a Roberto González que estuvo al frente del equipo en el partido de ayer. Y quiero darle la bienvenida a Martín y desearle lo mejor", señaló Grondona.

Palermo ya estuvo el jueves en la cancha en el partido que Arsenal igualó como visitante de All Boys por 1-1, con la dirección técnica interina de González, por la 14ta. fecha.

Arsenal se ubica último en el certamen Final, con apenas 11 unidades en 14 cotejos, pero se clasificó para los octavos de final de la Copa Libertadores por primera vez en su historia.

El domingo, desde las 17, el conjunto del Viaducto recibirá y jugará el jueves como local ante Unión Española de Chile el partido de ida de la Copa.

Ramón duda entre Mercado y Solari

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de River Plate, Ramón Angel Díaz, mantiene la duda entre Gabriel Mercado y Augusto Solari en el lateral derecho de la defensa de cara al partido frente a Vélez Sarsfield del domingo próximo, como local, por la 15ta. fecha del Torneo Final.

Si bien en la última fecha en la igualdad 0-0 frente a Estudiantes en La Plata Mercado recuperó la titularidad para darle más solidez defensiva al equipo, para el técnico la presencia de Solari puede ser importante de local pues le ofrece más presencia en ataque.

River, escolta a una unidad de los punteros Estudiantes y Colón, se entrenó en la mañana del viernes en el estadio a puertas cerradas y el DT no realizó práctica de fútbol, por lo que recién mañana, previo a la concentración, se conocerá la alineación definitiva para jugar ante el conjunto de Liniers.

De todos modos, los `11` que se perfilan para actuar en el Monumental son Leandro Chichizola; Mercado o Solari, Jonatan Maidana, Eder Balanta y Leonel Vangioni; Carlos Carbonero, Matías Kranevitter y Ariel Rojas; Manuel Lanzini; Fernando Cavenaghi y Teo Gutiérrez.

Los trabajos realizados el viernes por el plantel consistieron solamente en tareas con pelota en espacios reducidos y fútbol-tenis recreativo, de los cuales participó sin tantas exigencias Cristian Ledesma, quien viene de una contractura en el isquiotibial derecho.

El Lobo, si bien ya tiene el alta médica, aún no realizó ninguna práctica de fútbol y el sábado se va a evaluar y a confirmar oficialmente si tiene alguna chance de jugar el domingo o si va al banco de suplentes y lo cuidan para el partido ante Olimpo del domingo 27 de abril.

Asimismo, Ramón Díaz sabe que Ariel Rojas tiene cuatro amarillas y está al borde de una suspensión, por eso no quiere correr el riesgo de quedarse sin los dos volantes centrales que eran titulares hasta la lesión de Ledesma.

Por otra parte, Leonardo Ponzio, además de no ser tenido en cuenta por el entrenador desde hace siete fechas, arrastra una sobrecarga muscular y no está en condiciones de ser concentrado y por eso el DT tiene al juvenil Emiliano Agüero como alternativa en el banco de suplentes.

El conjunto millonario se volverá a entrenar el sábado a la mañana en el estadio Monumental, a puertas cerradas, con las tareas de pelota parada habituales en las horas previas al almuerzo y a la concentración del equipo.

River, que viene de empatar sin goles ante Estudiantes y que de local ganó seis de sus siete partidos, recibirá a Vélez, que tiene 20 puntos y viene de caer ante Argentinos y Quilmes en las últimas dos fechas.

En otro orden, la Federación Chilena de Fútbol no autorizó la disputa del cuadrangular internacional que incluía el superclásico River-Boca en Santiago de Chile y de este modo dicha posibilidad se trasladará a la pretemporada.

La idea de los directivos del consejo de Fútbol de River es avanzar con las tratativas para realizar la pretemporada en el exterior y organizar un par de superclásicos que podrían ser en Cancún o en Estados Unidos.
