Perazzo: "Ganamos un partido clave"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Olimpo, Walter Perazzo, destacó el sábado la victoria de su equipo ante Quilmes por 1-0 y afirmó que están "bien encaminados" para conseguir la continuidad en la máxima categoría de la AFA.

"Hay mucha angustia, mucho pesimismo en todos lados, así que era un partido que teníamos que sacar adelante porque si no se nos iba a complicar mucho, pero por suerte ganamos un partido clave y estoy feliz porque este grupo viene trabajando hace un año, hemos podido revertir la situación de la primera rueda y estamos bien encaminados", sostuvo Perazzo en rueda de prensa, tras el cotejo realizado en el Estadio Centenario.

Y agregó: "Hasta que no se concrete el objetivo uno siempre sigue con la guardia alta, hasta lograr los cuarenta y siete o cuarenta y ocho puntos que necesitamos, pero sin lugar a dudas con el triunfo de hoy ante un rival directo, difícil y de visitante nos da un cierto alivio, como para afrontar los próximos partidos con otro ánimo".

"Era importante no regalarnos, ellos (Quilmes) juegan con un punta, pero llegaban con los volantes en segunda jugada, entonces tratamos de estar siempre bien parados y aprovechar que ellos en algún momento iban a hacer cambios, a atacar e iban a quedar espacios. Por suerte Valencia hizo una jugada extraordinaria, virtud de su capacidad individual", redondeó el conductor de los bahienses.

Independiente: vuelve Montenegro, pero Parra será baja

BUENOS AIRES -- El director técnico de Independiente, Omar De Felippe, confirmó el sábado el regreso del volante Daniel Montenegro y la ausencia del delantero Facundo Parra, para el encuentro con Crucero del Norte, el lunes, en Misiones, por la 34ta. fecha del torneo de la Primera B Nacional.

Montenegro, capitán del rojo, regresará al primer equipo tras perderse el último encuentro (empate 1 a 1, de local, con Almirante Brown) al recuperarse de un esguince en su tobillo derecho, en tanto que Parra se perderá el partido por una sobrecarga en su aductor derecho.

Independiente formaría como lo hace habitualmente de visitante: Diego Rodríguez; Gabriel Vallés, Samuel Cáceres, Sergio Ojeda y Lucas Villalba; Martín Zapata, Hernán Fredes, Marcelo Vidal y Federico Mancuello; Daniel Montenegro y Sebastián Penco.

El resto de los concentrados serán Fabián Assmann, Claudio Morel Rodríguez, Franco Bellocq, Federico Insúa, Fabián Monserrat, Matías Pisano, Cristian Menéndez y Adrián Fernández.

El plantel viajará a Misiones a última hora del domingo y regresará a Avellaneda el martes por la mañana. Independiente tiene 50 unidades, a dos puntos de la zona de ascenso directo, y Crucero del Norte suma 49 puntos.

Cambiasso optimistic over World Cup chances

Inter midfielder Esteban Cambiasso is still hopeful of receiving a call-up to Argentina´s FIFA World Cup squad.

Cambiasso has not represented his country since July 2011, but a knee injury to Boca Juniors midfielder Fernando Gago has opened the door slightly for the 33-year-old ahead of this year´s showpiece in Brazil.

After helping his side to a 2-0 Serie A win at Parma on Saturday, Cambiasso said he was hoping to preserve his form in the build-up to the tournament.

"Do I have World Cup hopes now that Gago is injured? I´m hopeful, but certainly not because of his injury, but rather for my club performances," he told Inter´s official website.

"I hope Fernando makes it to the tournament since he´s an important player."

Inter consolidated fifth spot in the table with their victory and now hold a five-point cushion over Parma and Milan in the race for a UEFA Europa League spot.

"Parma are a good team and also made things difficult for us in Milan (during a 3-3 draw in December)," said Cambiasso.

"By the end of the first half you could tell it was a great game for anyone who had been watching, especially if you were a neutral supporter.

"During half-time I said I hoped it would continue to go that way, but at the end we took the three points."

The midfielder continued: "The team worked hard and we´re hoping to continue this way. We´ve found consistency with these two away results (following a win last week at Sampdoria). Now we´re hoping to do something positive at home, where our own fans certainly deserve it."

Inter host Napoli on Saturday, followed by a European six-pointer against Milan in the Derby della Madonnina.

Copa Libertadores Preview: Gremio away at San Lorenzo

Two-time Copa Libertadores winners Gremio travel to San Lorenzo on Wednesday, to begin their last-16 clash in the continental competition.

The Brazil Serie A outfit last reigned in South America in 1995, but made the final as recently as 2007.

Gremio´s two-leg tie with their Argentine opponents is squeezed into a packed schedule for both clubs, who will have to manage their squad around their respective domestic campaigns.

San Lorenzo have proven to be a tough team to break down at home in the Copa this campaign, as they have two wins and a draw from their three home fixtures.

The only side to score at the Estadio Pedro Bidegain was Union Espanola, who hit a late equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw.

However, Gremio can lay claim to a sensational away record in the tournament, similarly shipping just one goal in three trips and claiming seven points from them.

It is the first meeting between the two clubs.

Other last-16 ties beginning on Wednesday and Thursday this week all have either an Argentine or Brazilian flavour.

Velez Sarsfield are on the road at Paraguay´s Nacional Asuncion, with the Argentine outfit out of form after consecutive domestic losses.

Asuncion are strangely out of scoring form in the Division Profesional, without a goal in 199 minutes domestically, but put three in the back of the net last time out in the Copa against Santa Fe.

Also on Wednesday, Atletico Mineiro of Brazil are on the road at Colombia´s Atletico Nacional.

Finally on Thursday, Argentine club Arsenal are at home to Chilean side Union Espanola, who have either won or lost their past nine matches in all competitions.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have just one win from five in all comps, although that victory came in the Copa over Santos Laguna 3-0.

Argentina to face Brazil in China in the Superclásico de las Américas

It has been announced that Argentina and Brazil will meet each other in the Superclásico de las Américas on October 11th at the Bird’s Nest Stadium in Beijing. Since it’s revival in 2011 this fixture has been a two-legged match with the sides made up of solely domestic based players, however after a reprieve in 2013 due to the Confederations Cup, it returns and this time it will be a one off match with full strength squads. Brazil won the two previous meetings and this match will have added interest if either side are crowned World Champions in July.

Sambafoot Sunday: Neymar´s Barcelona? Neymar´s Brazil

The Brazilian´s season at Barcelona has been turbulent, but this experience should benefit his national team.

Neymar’s form at Barcelona is discussed, critiqued, and analysed week after week, game after game. The high profile nature of his transfer from Brazil to Catalonia, coupled with the recently revealed baggage surrounding the complexities of the deal, means his performances are constantly in the spotlight.

The player wouldn’t have expected anything less though. And the big move to Europe was something he’d bided his time for, was something he wanted, and was ultimately, something he needed.

A common line is that Neymar has been stifled at Barcelona, playing as part of a system which favours other players, rather than awarding him the freer role he had at Santos and retains to some extent when playing for Brazil.

If we rewind back to Neymar´s final season at Santos, we saw a player who looked de-motivated, and was playing his club matches in cruise control. His free role had become detrimental, and you got the impression from his demeanour and performances on the pitch, that he felt he’d already sufficiently proved himself in Brazil, and need do nothing more.

That might have been the case, as there were rumours that the Barcelona move had been in the pipeline for some time, ever since the then European champions played Santos in the World Club Cup back in 2011.

Back to the present day, Barcelona’s 2013/14 season has been disappointing for several reasons, and not just because Neymar hasn’t hit the heights many expected.

Coach Tata Martino joined Barcelona amidst some enthusiastic claims that he was ideal for the club thanks to his tutelage under the much lauded and well respected Marcelo Bielsa.

Martino’s predecessor, Pep Guardiola, had also sought the advice of the experienced Argentine in his early days as a coach, and to many, Martino was the next logical step in Barcelona’s Bielsista post-graduate programme.

The reality, as is often the case in football, has been much different to the theory. Martino has failed to get the best from Lionel Messi, and his tinkering with Cesc Fabregas has given too much responsibility to a player who doesn’t yet look ready for it.

The club’s lack of centre-back cover since the injury to Gerard Pique, and the recent threat of a transfer ban, suggest that Neymar’s occasional poor performance should be the least of Barcelona’s worries.

Despite the troubles, Neymar’s experiences in Spain will still be beneficial to Brazil, and his recent injury might be even more welcome. Brazil’s number ten has learnt to be disciplined within a tactical system, and has been playing regularly in the Champions League against the standard of player he’s likely to come up against in the big games at the World Cup.

The recent injury will give him time to get his head together before this summer´s tournament, and provide an opportunity to recharge mentally as well as physically, after what has been a hectic first season in Europe.

It’s true that Barcelona could alter their system to get the most from Neymar, but his productivity hasn’t been too shabby for them despite being shifted around from wing to wing to accommodate other players. Most at Barcelona, particularly his team-mates, recognise Neymar’s talent, and after this bedding in season in could become a more integral part of their system.

Although you can guarantee that, should Brazil fail to win the World Cup, Barcelona will receive a big slice of the apportioned blame.

Crunch time for relegation fighting August Town

The relegation dog fight in the Red Stripe Premier League will intensify this Sunday as in a tightly knitted mid table, teams battle for survival over the Easter Weekend.

At the extreme bottom is August Town and they started what hopefully will be a winning run last week against Humble Lion and on Sunday at the UWI Bowl starting 3:30 pm, they host another Clarendon team Sporting Central Academy in ninth spot on 34 points.

August Town are on 27 points and are seven points below the safety zone with four games remaining. A win for the Baris Johnson-coached August Town will go a far way in giving them some renewed hope of survival while a defeat would mean almost certain relegation.

Sporting Central Academy are just one point and two places above the relegation zone and they know the implications of losing this game could see them fall right into that dreaded drop zone.

Only a few weeks, Humble Lion was fighting for a top four spot, now they are fighting for their premier league’s life in 11th spot on 33 points and this match against Harbour View will be a most crucial one.

With just three points separating fifth-placed Tivoli Gardens from 11th-placed Humble Lion, a number of teams are nervous with just four games remaining. But so close is the mid table that a defeat for Humble Lion would not be the end but three points would be of immense value. This game starts at 6:30 pm at the Compound and Harbour View having already qualified for the playoffs, will be using this game to fine tune their preparations and should rotate several players.

Tenth-placed Portmore United on 33 points travel to fifth placed Tivoli Gardens on a mission to move away from the relegation zone. Portmore will be boosted by the fact that Tivoli Gardens have not won in their last five games and have seen their playoff chances dashed. But despite their low placing, Portmore United remains one of the most talented teams and will make it very hard for the host at the Edward Seaga Stadium at 4:00pm.

For the first time since returning to the top flight football in 2006 where they finished second twice in 2011 and 2012, Boys’ Town are in grave danger of being relegated and must get a positive result against leaders Waterhouse. The Red Brigades are eighth with 34 points and a win plus other favourable results, could take them fifth. But it won’t be easy against in form Waterhouse out front on 53 points and winner of three of their last five games and ready for the playoffs.

Cavalier SC saw their chances of advancing to the semi-final hampered last week when they lost to Arnett Gardens but will be hoping to rebound against a Rivoli United still fighting for survival. The game will start at 4:00pm at Stadium East field with Cavalier in sixth spot on 36 points with Rivoli just behind with 35 points.

On Monday, it will be a battle for third spot as Montego Bay United on 48 points host Arnett Gardens on 45 points as both team knows a win would seal playoff football. The Jerome Waite-coached Arnett Gardens have been the hottest team of late and are on the hunt for their fourth consecutive victory. Montego Bay are not showing the kind of form necessary to carry to the semi-final and this game both teams will want to make a psychological statement having basically secured their playoff spots. The game is scheduled for Catherine Hall Sports Complex at 8:30 pm.

Kvalitetsfaldet i den argentinske liga kom til udtryk i nattens tre kampe, men hvad man ikke leverer på banen, kompenseres til gengæld på lægterne mere end nogen anden liga - meget imponeret over kulissen på ølbryggernes ellers ret åbne Estadio Centenario.

Liverpool Football Club has gained three million new supporters in Uruguay, and this is not a common thing. All over South America, football fans generally become attached to a player and not his club in Europe. In Uruguay, things are different. And it’s something I’ve never seen happen before. The first thing I noticed that fans took positively about Liverpool FC (when Luis first joined) was the striking similarities between both football cultures. You see, Uruguay’s football culture is a bit different in that it treats its national team more like a club than the usual manifestation of nationalism seen around the world. Fans and players fight for the shirt (+ its history), and the culture very inclusive to any fan, regardless of nationality.

When Luis first went to Liverpool, Sky-Blue fans from all corners were thrilled to have discovered (maybe for the first time) a club that shared the same devotion to tradition and history in football. But what further set Liverpool FC apart was the humanity they displayed towards Luis and his small family.

Liverpool FC players and supporters are famous for the devotion they show in honouring their iconic club history.

Flash forward to the summer of 2013, and Sky-Blue fans all over the world were legitimately furious at Luis Suarez for even considering leaving Liverpool. Beyond the titles and the glamorous history, they saw a level of compassion that is rarely seen in a professional football establishment. A legend like Kenny Dalglish put his reputations on the line for what in his heart he believed was right. Friends like Glen Johnson and Steven Gerrard publicly supported him in the face of a hysterical and calculating media. You know your true friends are the ones who stand by you when a mob-like majority has ostracized you. And the fans, as well as his international teammates knew that Liverpool FC had become friends in the truest sense of the word.

These people knew that Luis would never find another club on earth as perfect as Liverpool. At the time, Liverpool FC and their supporters were understandably disappointed. But instead they continued on the same way they had always done: with class, empathy and kindness. The club and its supporters continuously offered their support (emotional and psychological), and made him feel at moer than ever. This helped him turn the page from an agonizing period in his life, and he went on to have his best ever year with Liverpool.

So, all I can say is: thank you. I wish the language barrier wasn’t historically a factor in keeping these two football cultures from interacting. Because, your hairs would stand up at seeing how this entire tiny nation has taken to Liverpool’s cause. I wish all the best to our friends on Merseyside.
