Liga MX Wrap: Top two beaten

Cruz Azul maintained their two-point lead atop the Liga MX despite a crushing 5-1 loss at Morelia on matchday 16.

With one eye on their CONCACAF Champions League final second leg against Toluca on Thursday, a weakened Cruz Azul were well beaten at the Estadio Generalisimo Jose Maria Morelos y Pavon.

A three-goal first half set up sixth-placed Morelia´s win, but Luis Tena´s Cruz Azul side went unpunished.

Toluca were unable to take advantage, missing their chance to go top after suffering a 1-0 loss at Atlas.

They, too, put out a weaker side, with the Champions League tie locked at 0-0 after the first leg at Cruz Azul.

At Morelia, the hosts took a 17th-minute lead against the league leaders as Aldo Ramirez´s 25-yard shot went in off the underside of the crossbar.

Hector Mancilla´s goal from an angle nine minutes later made it 2-0, but Cruz Azul pulled a goal back shortly before the break.

Achille Emana finished neatly into the bottom corner in a one-on-one, only for Mancilla to restore the hosts´ two-goal lead from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time.

Duvier Riascos and Oscar Fernandez completed the rout with goals in the final 15 minutes.

At Atlas´ Estadio Jalisco, Rodrigo Millar´s 70th-minute header saw the hosts past Toluca.

Pumas UNAM closed the gap on the top two as Roberto Ramirez struck a 55th-minute winner in their 1-0 victory at home to Guadalajara.

Costa Rica Primera Division Wrap: Saprissa rout Belen Siglo XXI

Deportivo Saprissa´s domination of the Costa Rica Primera Division continued after their drubbing of Belen Siglo XXI on Sunday.

A second-half brace from Carlos Saucedo was the catalyst behind Saprissa´s crushing 4-0 victory at the Estadio Ricardo Saprissa Ayma.

https://www.youtube.com/…fGaRXPnTi7g

Saprissa, who have not lost since the opening day of the season, are five points clear at the summit having collected 46 points from 21 games, while sixth-placed Belen Siglo XXI were condemned to back-to-back losses.

After a tense opening, Saprissa eventually hit the front courtesy of Daniel Colindres, seven minutes before the half-time break.

Ronald Gonzalez Brenes´ men did not have to wait long for a second goal, with veteran striker Saucedo doubling their advantage seven minutes into the second half.

Youngster David Ramirez got in on the action, netting Saprissa´s third on 83 minutes before Saucedo capped a dominant performance with an injury-time penalty.

Second-placed Alajuelense are hot on the heels of Saprissa following their narrow win 1-0 over UCR.

https://www.youtube.com/…P-yHbJ4mEx8

Ariel Rodriguez´s 33rd-minute penalty was all that separated the two teams at the Estadio Eladio Rosabal Cordero.

A three-game winning streak has Alajuelense five points adrift of Saprissa on 41 points.

In other results, Herediano maintained their stranglehold on third spot with a routine 2-0 win at Limon.

Venezuela Primera Division Wrap: Three and easy for Zamora

Zamora moved three points clear atop of the Venezuela Primera Division table with a comprehensive win over Deportivo La Guaira on Sunday.

John Murillo bagged a brace and Ricardo Clarke netted a goal of his own as Zamora beat 13th-placed La Guaira at the Estadio Nacional Brigido Iriarte.

Zamora have collected 32 points after 14 rounds, giving them a three-point buffer ahead of rivals Trujillanos.

As for La Guaira, they are winless in three games since edging cellar dwellers Atletico El Vigia at the end of March.

Zamora were frustrated by Deportivo Anzoategui midweek, forced to share the spoils after playing out a 1-1 draw, but Noel Sanvicente´s men returned to winning ways thanks to a dominant first half away from home.

With scores level after 30 minutes, Murillo finally made the breakthrough with his first goal since Zamora´s drubbing of Trujillanos on April 5.

And the visitors doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time when Panama attacker Clarke found the back of the net.

The result was put beyond doubt on the hour-mark courtesy of Murillo, who has now scored three league goals in as many games.

Meanwhile, an injury-time strike from Giancarlo Maldonado handed Deportivo Tachira a thrilling 2-1 victory at home to Anzoategui.

Rolando Escobar had levelled proceedings for Anzoategui in the 90th minute after Gelmin Rivas´ first-half opener.

But Maldonado popped up in the fourth minute of injury time to lift the hosts to their third consecutive win.

The result sees sixth-placed Tachira close to within four points of second spot in the standings.

It is back to the drawing board for Anzoategui, who have gone five matches without a league win to drop to eighth, though they have one game in hand on most teams.

Colombia Primera A Wrap: Envigado seal top-eight place

Envigado moved into the Colombia Primera A final stages as La Equidad and Itagui snuck in on the final matchday.

A late Michael Rangel brace helped Envigado to a 2-0 win at Alianza Petrolera and into sixth in the table, with the top eight going into the quarter-finals.

Rangel opened the scoring on 82 minutes and added another soon after to seal the result for Juan Sanchez´s men.

Finishing behind Envigado were Itagui and La Equidad despite the duo failing to win on matchday 18.

Itagui came from behind twice to draw 2-2 at home to Once Caldas, with the sides finishing seventh and fifth respectively.

La Equidad suffered a shock 1-0 loss at Deportivo Cali, but their nearest rivals failed to take advantage.

Alianza Petrolera were one of those teams, while Boyaca Chico ended up 10th after their 2-1 loss at Medellin.

Atletico Nacional finished top of the table despite suffering a 2-1 loss at Patriotas Boyaca, who climbed off the bottom.

The league leaders had looked the more likely to open the scoring away from home.

But after missing several chances, they were made to pay as Carlos Renteria tucked away a neat finish from a corner.

Renteria doubled the lead on 72 minutes when he got on the end of an Antonio Otero goal-kick and delightfully chipped goalkeeper Christian Vargas from 25 yards.

Jairo Palomino headed in a set-piece for Atletico Nacional three minutes later, but they were unable to find an equaliser.

Millonarios and Junior finished second and third respectively – a point behind – after claiming wins.

Junior edged fourth-placed Santa Fe 2-1 and Millonarios clinched a come-from-behind 3-1 win over bottom club Deportes Tolima.

Ecuador Primera A Wrap: Emelec extend lead, Independiente lose again

Primera A leaders Emelec extended the gap at the top of the table to five points after they recorded a 3-1 win over LDU Loja.

https://www.youtube.com/…ciSAxW_WEyY

A goal in the opening minute from Fernando Gimenez put Emelec in control immediately, with Marcos Mondaini and Luis Escalada putting them 3-0 up with six minutes to play.

John Garcia pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 88th minute, but it was merely a consolation as the leaders made it three league games unbeaten.

Independiente del Valle allowed Emelec to pull five points clear after slipping to a second successive defeat.

After taking an early lead against El Nacional, Independiente soon found themselves behind as Edwin Hurtado and Carlos Tenorio struck for the visitors.

With 10 minutes to play, Independiente, who had Luis Leon sent off, were level before Marvin Pita´s strike two minutes later sent them to defeat.

Universidad Catolica moved into third and a point behind Independiente after their 3-1 win over 10-man LDU Quito, with Armando Wila netting twice.

The bottom two, Deportivo Cuenca and Mushuc Runa, both fell to their ninth defeats of the Primera A season as they start to become cut adrift.

Liga del Futbol Profesional Boliviano Wrap: The Strongest eye top spot

The Strongest closed in on San Jose after the Liga del Futbol Profesional Boliviano leaders suffered a rare loss.

Eduardo Villegas´ The Strongest left it late to win 1-0 at Bolivar, and that was enough to draw level on points with San Jose, who lost 2-1 at Aurora.

https://www.youtube.com/…VgFqo0K8wbc

San Jose (29 points, +11 goal difference) remain top ahead of The Strongest (29, +8) and Club Universitario (28, +7).

In Saturday´s only game, Jair Reinoso´s cheeky flick from inside the area was enough for The Strongest.

San Jose looked set to maintain their three-point lead at the top when Marcelo Gomes gave them a 31st-minute lead at Aurora.

But second-half goals from Roberto Gamarra and Eduardo Vallecillo saw eighth-placed Aurora to the upset win.

Club Universitario also closed in on top spot after Federico Silvestre´s goal on the half-hour mark saw them past Nacional Potosi 1-0.

Real Potosi ended a three-game losing run as they held on for a 1-0 win at Guabira after Nicolas Bubas put them ahead on nine minutes.

Daniel Manjon and Anderson Gonzaga struck in the opening 10 minutes before Leandro Ferreira added a brace to make it 4-0 at the break.

Sergio Almiron netted a consolation goal on the hour-mark for the visitors, scoring from the penalty spot.

Oriente Petrolero and Wilstermann played out a 0-0 draw.

CONCACAF Champions League Preview: Toluca v Cruz Azul

Toluca are in the box seat to be crowned winners of the CONCACAF Champions League ahead of this week´s second leg.

Jose Cardozo´s Toluca came away from their trip to Mexican rivals Cruz Azul with honours even after playing out a goalless draw at the Estadio Azul.

Though both teams failed to find the back of the net, the result suited Toluca with away goals the determining factors if the second leg ends all-square at the end of normal time.

The 10-time Liga MX champions are now well placed to win their first annual North American continental club competition since 2003, when they edged fellow Mexicans Monarcas 5-4 on aggregate.

Cardozo played in that triumphant team and the 43-year-old is quietly confident ahead of the return leg at Estadio Nemesio Diez on Wednesday.

"In the 90 minutes that remain, we have to be very intelligent to try to keep on as champions," said Cardozo.

"Playing at home we will put forth from the outset."

Toluca´s most recent clash at home to Cruz Azul resulted in a resounding 3-0 win in November last year.

However, Cruz Azul had won four consecutive matches at Toluca prior to that defeat, which has coach Luis Fernando Tena relatively confident.

"We are going with all of the determination to win the final," Tena said.

"We have the personality and the unity and we are a team with goalscoring capability."

One thing that can be for certain on Wednesday is the fitness of both sets of players.

Toluca and Cruz Azul opted to field weakened line-ups in the Liga MX with eyes on the Champions League final return leg.

Rotation did not work well for either team, with Toluca suffering a 1-0 defeat to Atlas and missing the chance to go top after Cruz Azul were on the receiving end of a 5-1 drubbing at Morelia.

Toluca will take heart from the fact that they have not lost at home in all competitions since October last year, when they coincidently lost 2-1 to Cruz Azul in the league.

Marseille reach agreement with Bielsa

Marseille have reached an agreement in principle to appoint Marcelo Bielsa as coach, according to the club´s vice-president Vincent Labrune.

The former Argentina, Chile and Athletic Bilbao coach has been linked to the Ligue 1 club for several weeks.

It appears a contract is close to being finalised after Labrune´s comments following Marseille´s 0-0 draw at home to Lille on Sunday.

"We have a tentative agreement which is now subject to the drafting of contracts," he told reporters.

"Without falling into absolute euphoria, we can consider that we are confident that this issue will be finalised ... I can say that we will have a great coach for next season."

Jose Anigo has been in charge of Marseille in a caretaker capacity since December last year, when Elie Baup was sacked.

Marseille are struggling in sixth in the Ligue 1 table and appear unlikely to qualify for European football for next season.
