Chile Primera Division Wrap: Relegation battle continues

Huachipato continued their fine form in the Chile Primera Division while dealing Union La Calera´s survival chances a huge blow.

Mario Salas´ Huachipato extended their unbeaten league run to six matches with a resounding 6-0 win over Union La Calera at the Estadio Municipal Nicolas Chahuan Nazar.

The run has lifted Huachipato, who had a dreadful Apertura campaign, clear of the relegation zone and into sixth in the Clausura.

Union La Calera are only outside the bottom two in the aggregate table on goal difference, despite the six-goal hammering, ahead of the final matchday of the season.

David Llanos headed in a fifth-minute opener for visiting Huachipato before their lead was doubled soon after.

Felipe Reynero netted a scrappy second before Jose Contreras´ smart header looped over goalkeeper Juan Ojeda to make it 3-0.

Llanos tapped in a cutback moments before the break to make it 4-0 at half-time.

The fifth goal, on 71 minutes, came via Francisco Arrue from the penalty spot before Llanos completed his hat-trick.

Rangers´ relegation was confirmed after a 2-0 loss to fellow strugglers Audax Italiano.

Audax Italiano are a point clear of second bottom Everton, who came from behind to take a point in a 1-1 draw at home to Nublense.

Sebastian Varas opened the scoring early in the second half before Carlos Ponce levelled on the hour-mark.

Santiago Wanderers are safe after overcoming Cobresal 2-0 thanks to two late goals.

Clausura champions Colo Colo gave up two leads as they were held to a 2-2 draw by second-placed Universidad Catolica and O´Higgins were 3-1 winners at Union Espanola.

Elsewhere, Deportes Iquique claimed a 1-0 win at Palestino, Universidad Concepcion overcame a Universidad Chile side that finished with eight men 1-0 and Antofagasta edged Cobreloa 1-0.

Paraguay Division Profesional Wrap: Libertad stay top with big win

League leaders Libertad were big winners in a round of crushing results in Paraguay´s Division Profesional over the weekend.

Libertad blitzed ninth-placed General Diaz 5-0 rout at the Estadio Dr Nicolas Leoz on Sunday, while Cerro Porteno humiliated Deportivo Capiata 7-0 and Guarani routed Sol de America 4-0.

Pedro Sarabia´s Libertad (+20 goal difference) move to 26 points after 10 games, six clear of nearest rivals Guarani (+10).

Libertad were unbeaten in 10 games prior to kick-off and set off to extending that run in the 43rd minute, when Rodrigo Lopez converted a penalty.

The home side lifted a gear after the half-time interval, scoring two goals in five minutes to seemingly put the result beyond.

Jorge Moreira and Nelson Romero were on target during that period before Claudio Vargas made it 4-0 with 19 minutes remaining.

The demolition was complete during injury-time thanks to Gustavo Gomez´s late goal - the defender´s second in as many games.

Second-placed Guarani also enjoyed a resounding victory thanks to a three-goal second-half blitz at the Estadio Luis Alfonso Giagni on Sunday

Guarani opened the scoring on 18 minutes courtesy of Sergio Mendoza before Jorge Benitez, Ivan Gonzalez and Fernando Fernandez struck after the break in a masterclass from the visiting team.

At the Estadio General Pablo Rojas on Monday, striker Guillermo Beltran scored four goals as Cerro Porteno ran riot at home to 10th-placed Deportivo Capiata.

Angel Romero also bagged a brace in the one-sided affair, while Oscar Romero scored a goal of his own.

In other results, Olimpia leapfrogged Nacional Asuncion into third position in the standings after running out 2-0 winners.

Jorge Ortega scored twice as Rubio Nu accounted for second-bottom 12 de Octubre 3-0, while cellar dwellers 3 de Febrero lost 2-0 at home to Sportivo Luqueno.

Uruguay Primera Division Wrap: Penarol stay top

Defending champions Penarol retained top spot in Uruguay´s Primera Division with a narrow win over rivals Fenix on Monday.

Penarol saw off Fenix thanks to Luis Aguiar´s first-half strike at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo.

Jorge Orosman da Silva´s men (23 points) remain one point clear in the standings after 11 games, while Fenix (18 points) drop to fourth after back-to-back defeats.

Only two points separated the teams before kick-off but the visitors extended that buffer after taking the lead on the stroke of half time.

Aguiar found the back of the net in the second minute of added time for his second goal in as many games, which was enough for victory.

Wanderers, however, are still hot on Penarol´s tail after claiming a routine 3-1 win at eighth-placed Rentistas on Sunday.

The visiting side went ahead in the sixth minute courtesy of Mauricio Gomez´s thunderous free-kick on the edge of the box at the Complejo Deportivo.

Wanderers doubled their lead just seconds later after Sergio Blanco headed the ball over Rentistas´ goalkeeper from close range.

The veteran attacker put the result beyond doubt on 77 minutes via the penalty spot, though Erick Cabaco netted a consolation goal for the home side with one minute of regulation time remaining.

Alfredo Arias´ Wanderers have collected 22 points from 11 rounds, one more than third-placed Danubio, who overcame Racing 2-1 in a thrilling match.

As for Rentistas, they drop one position in the table after Defensor Sporting came from two goals down to earn a 3-3 draw at third-bottom El Tanque Sisley.

In other results, former Uruguay international Alvaro Recoba was on the scoresheet as in-form Nacional eased past lowly Cerro Largo 3-0.

Two goals in the final nine minutes from Nestor Silva and Rodrigo Viega lifted Juventud to a 2-0 triumph at home to Liverpool.

Sud America returned to winning ways against River Plate, winning 2-1 at the Estadio Municipal Casto Martinez Laguarda.

Meanwhile, basement club Miramar Misiones slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Cerro.

Gremio with one or two Copa Libertadores injury concerns

Gremio have a couple of injury doubts ahead of their Copa Libertadores second round fixtures with Argentine champions San Lorenzo, the first leg of which is on Wednesday in their opponent´s home fixture.

The Brazilian sde are set to be without the services of Rhodolfo and Wendell, the former´s thigh injury not expected to keep him out for an extended period of time. Indeed, defender Rhodolfo has become a vital player for the team from Porto Alegre after they finished as runnners up to Cruzeiro in last season´s Brasileirao.

Goalkeeper Marcelo Grohe is expected to be fit after passing a medical test on his left thigh, as Gremio look for a first Libertadores title since 1995, and a third in their history.

In between the San Lorenzo games, they must try to bounce back from an opening day league defeat to Atletico Paranaense whwn hosting Atletico Mineiro on Sunday evening.

Olimpo venderá entradas para hinchas "neutrales" ante River

BUENOS AIRES -- El presidente de Olimpo, Alfredo Dagna, afirmó el martes que en el partido del domingo ante River habrá unos cuatro mil hinchas "neutrales" porque tienen la necesidad de "recaudar unos manguitos más".

Consciente de que en el fútbol argentino está vedado el ingreso de los hinchas visitantes, relativizó el hecho de que infringirán esa norma al comentar que "los no socios de Olimpo" que irán a la cancha son "gente común que quiere ver un espectáculo".

Según dijo Dagna, el sábado se pondrán a la venta "entre 3.500 y 4.000 populares y 300 plateas" para los "neutrales".

El titular del club bahiense remarcó que para los clubes argentinos "es un perjuicio económico" que no puedan ir los hinchas visitantes y dijo que "cada vez" que abre la cancha para un partido, Olimpo pierde "ochenta mil pesos".

"Tenemos la posibilidad de poder recaudar unos manguitos más para paliar la delicada situación financiera de los clubes, es una cosa absolutamente lógica", añadió Dagna al hablar por televisión.

A su vez, dio por descontado que "no va a haber ningún tipo de problema" en cuanto a la seguridad.

Pedro Troglio, DT de Gimnasia líder: "La ilusión está y lo intentaremos"

LA PLATA -- De repente Gimnasia y Esgrima quedó a las puertas del título de liga que se le negó en todo el profesionalismo y ante ello el técnico Pedro Troglio avisó que irá por el logro que les quita el sueño a los hinchas del Lobo.

"La ilusión está y lo intentaremos. Como siempre lo hicimos, vamos por todo en un torneo difícil donde no hay un rival sino ocho equipos en pocos puntos", sostuvo Troglio tras el entrenamiento matutino en Estancia Chica, el bunker de Gimnasia.

El Lobo fue campeón en 1929, en el amateurismo, y en el 94 ganó la Copa Centenario, pero los hinchas tienen la espina clavada por la derrota en el último partido del Clausura 95 ante Independiente, perdiendo el título a manos de San Lorenzo.

"Cuando Gimnasia sea campeón ojalá el técnico sea yo", jugó Troglio en un reportaje por en un canal deportivo.

El entrenador les dio todo el crédito a los futbolistas, a quienes les pidió tranquilidad para afrontar las difíciles cuatro fechas que se le vienen encima.

"Este equipo se formó en la necesidad cuando Gimnasia se estaba por ir a la B Metropolitana", recordó el técnico, quien lo devolvió a Primera División un año atrás.

De cara a lo que viene, Troglio dijo que ante Argentinos Juniors, que está al borde del descenso, "será un partido dificilísimo" por lo que se juega.

"Tiene un equipo muy rápido y un gran entrenador", sostuvo sobre el adversario y lamentó que Argentinos atraviese tan difícil momento.

Lanús: Goltz jugará ante Santos Laguna

BUENOS AIRES -- Refuerzo de lujo para el Lanús de Guillermo Barros Schelotto. Para el partido de vuelta de los octavos de final de la Copa Libertadores, estará a disposición Paolo Goltz, ya recuperado de un desgarro.

El zaguero central volverá al equipo titular, luego de dos semanas de inactividad y ocupará la zaga central junto a Carlos Izquierdoz, ausente también en el partido de ida por estar suspendido.

El plantel partió hacia México en la noche del lunes, luego de una serie de entrenamientos que ultimaron detalles de cara al partido a disputarse en la madrugada argentina del día jueves.

Cabe recordar que aún está suspendido Santiago Silva, expulsado en el partido ante O´Higgins. Además, no formaron parte de la delegación Lucas Melano y Jorge Ortiz (lesionados) y Jorge Pereyra Díaz (con posibilidades de ser transferido).

El probable equipo para enfrentar a Santos Laguna es: Agustín Marchesín; Carlos Araujo, Paolo Goltz, Carlos Izquierdoz, Maxi Velázquez; Diego González, Leandro Somoza, Víctor Ayala; Marcos Astina, Ismael Blanco y Lautaro Acosta.

Además, completaron la delegación: Esteban Andrada; Matías Martínez, Lucas Monteseirín, Alejandro Sila, Fernando Barrientos, Jorge Valdez Chamorro, Oscar Benítez e Ignacio Baillone.

Lanús visitará a Santos Laguna desde las 00:10 hs. del jueves, con el arbitraje del uruguayo Darío Ubrianco. Cabe recordar que el "Granate" sólo ganó uno de sus cuatro partidos jugados como visitante en la actual Copa Libertadores (ante Caracas por el repechaje).

El plantel de Independiente salió de aeroparque custodiado por la policía

BUENOS AIRES -- El plantel de Independiente dejó en la mañana del martes el aeroparque metropolitano Jorge Newbery desde la pista y con custodia policial.

La delegación del club de Avellaneda llegó este martes a Buenos Aires procedente de Misiones, donde anoche perdió ante Crucero del Norte 3-1 y quedó a dos puntos de la última plaza de ascenso a Primera División.

Cuando los jugadores eran esperados por periodistas en el hall central de la aeroestación, se informó que los futbolistas y el cuerpo técnico no tendrían contacto con la prensa tras lo cual se vio al ómnibus, custodiado por policía, salir del lugar.

El plantel de Independiente volverá a entrenarse el miércoles en Villa Domínico, a puertas cerradas, de cara al partido del lunes próximo ante Sportivo Belgrano de San Francisco, en el estadio Libertadores de América.

En medio de este escenario renunció Luis Felice, tesorero del club, siendo el 15to. dirigente en abandonar su cargo en la Comisión Directiva.

Felice había presentado su carta de dimisión la semana pasada, pero producto de los feriados de Semana Santa, recién llegó y se hizo efectiva este martes.

Consultado por los motivos de su renuncia, el extesorero argumentó su disconformidad con el acuerdo entre la Comisión Directiva y la Agrupación Independiente.

"He tirado dos años de mi vida a la basura. Este acuerdo, si se firma, no soluciona los problemas de Independiente, no alcanza", sostuvo en declaraciones a Más Rojo, uno de los sitios web que sigue la campaña del club de Avellaneda.

De esta manera, Felice siguió el mismo procedimiento que Rubén Vazquez, ex vice presidente primero, haciendo uso de una carta documento para que la moción sea legalmente efectiva.

El Tri Tracker: Dos Santos on the outs?

Welcome to the first, and hopefully not last, edition of El Tri tracker, where I discuss some of the noteworthy stories leading up to the World Cup for the Mexican national team. It will more than likely be very biased.

Late last week, Fox Deportes´ La Ultima Palabra released a report that listed 19 players who are shoe-ins for Mexico head coach Miguel Herrera´s final 23-man roster. I didn´t get a chance to see the episode, but I´m quite sure that Herrera had no real input on their "report." Perhaps he contacted the staff telepathically and gave them hints. Either way, the report has made its rounds around the media and has snowballed from "La Ultima Palabra´s prediction" to "Herrera´s partial and somehow definite list."

There isn´t anything from the list that is too surprising, and I would imagine that if I sat around with my friends discussing the final roster, it would look fairly similar. Enough chitchat, though, I´m sure you´re already becoming impatient about the list. Here are the apparent 19 who are supposedly guaranteed a spot:

Jesus Corona, Alfredo Talavera, Diego Reyes, Rafael Marquez, Hector Moreno, Francisco Rodriguez, Miguel Layun, Paul Aguilar, Andres Guardado, Juan Carlos Medina, Carlos Pena, Jose Juan Vazquez, Luis Montes, Hector Herrera, Isaac Brizuela, Oribe Peralta, Javier Hernandez, Raul Jimenez, Alan Pulido.

This would likely leave four spots open for the following: Moises Munoz, Guillermo Ochoa, Juan Carlos Valenzuela, Enrique Perez, Miguel Ponce, Javier Aquino, Giovani dos Santos, Marco Fabian.

What if the report is true? Is there a chance that I might not see Ochoa, dos Santos, or Fabian in the World Cup? I hope not.

Speaking of 19, Mexico is now ranked at 19 in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World rankings. I imagine that a country´s performance has no correlation with the amount of Coca-Cola that their squad indulges in.

So, what does this mean for the national team? Not much, to be honest. It hasn´t been too significant in the past if you think about it. Mexico were ranked fourth right before the 1998 World Cup, seventh before the 2002 World Cup and fourth again leading up to the 2006 World Cup. The results from Mexico during those tournaments didn´t exactly signify their rankings. The FIFA rankings are undoubtedly fun to look at, but it´s good to remember to take them with a grain of salt.

Andres Guardado is also in the news after stating that his priorities are currently with Bayer Leverkusen and not the national team. Guardado stated that he hasn´t been thinking about the World Cup, and that he would prefer to focus on his career. It´s an understandable feeling from midfielder/defensive winger, but I´m not entirely sure if those are the type of things that a player should be saying just a few weeks before the final roster is selected.

On a final note, Sport Club do Recife, a professional squad from Brazil, has announced that it will use jerseys inspired from the Mexican, Japanese and German national teams. Through a deal with Adidas, the squad will be paying tribute to the three squads who will be playing in Recife during the World Cup. Although the deal was probably made more for financial reasons than "tribute" reasons, I still think it´s very cool.

Quilmes: Ricardo Caruso Lombardi cargó contra Luis Andreuchi

BUENOS AIRES -- El verborrágico entrenador de Quilmes, Ricardo Caruso Lombardi, sumó el martes un nuevo nombre a la lista de ´enemigos dialécticos´, el exgoleador y símbolo de la entidad, Luis Andreuchi, a quien acusó de "dejar tirados" a los juveniles de divisiones inferiores que tiene a su cargo.

Con el Cervecero en zona de descenso, el DT apuntó al hoy representante de jugadores, de quien dijo: "Que se lave la boca antes de hablar de mí".

"Que no venga a hablar de mí este pelotudo. No me banco que diga que soy un chanta y robo la plata. Si aparece lo cago a trompadas", anunció, desencajado, Caruso Lombardi, en declaraciones a la radio FM Sur.

La polémica entre ambos personajes estalló a raíz de una declaración anterior que emitió Andreuchi (goleador del equipo cervecero campeón en el Metropolitano de 1978), en virtud de que su representado, el volante Arnaldo Pitu González, no tiene mucho rodaje en el equipo principal que hoy interviene en el Torneo Final.

Andreuchi había manifestado al programa ´Deportes en FM´ que Caruso Lombardi "es una pantomima del fútbol argentino. Le gusta mucho la plata".

El actual técnico de Quilmes recogió el guante y descargó toda la artillería contra el exjugador del club: "Que (Luis) Andreuchi atienda a los pibes que tiene tirados. Y que no le haga juicios a Quilmes", reclamó.

Sin mencionarlo, Caruso Lombardi acusó a Andreuchi de recomendar las contrataciones de refuerzos en el comienzo de la temporada: "Los clubes son muy tontos para armar los equipos. Yo no armo los equipos, yo me acomodo a lo que tengo", advirtió.

El técnico quilmeño defendió la titularidad que le entrega habitualmente a Miguel Caneo, de quien señaló: "Es un tipo leal. Nos decimos las cosas en la cara", resumió.

"Por ahí no le da para tirar una pared, pero antes que todo está la parte humana", lo defendió el DT al exenganche de Boca.

"No vamos a creer que Andreuchi es Papá Noel. Cómo va a salir a decir lo que ganan los jugadores ¿Eso está bien?", se quejó el entrenador cervecero.
