Independiente: volverían Tula y Parra

BUENOS AIRES -- La renuncia de Javier Cantero se llevó todos los focos de atención. Y en medio de esto, la realidad futbolística de Independiente, ubicado en la 5° posición del Torneo B Nacional que lo mantiene fuera de los puestos de ascenso, obliga al técnico Omar De Felippe y a los jugadores a pensar en el próximo compromiso frente a Sportivo Belgrano.

Tras el día libre del martes posterior a la derrota ante Crucero del Norte, el plantel regresó al trabajo el miércoles por la mañana en el predio de Villa Domínico. Tanto Cristian Tula como Facundo Parra, ausentes el lunes en Misiones, realizaron los trabajos físicos y con pelota junto al resto y estarían a disposición del entrenador.

El defensor está mejor de la fractura en el tabique nasal, aunque jugaría con una máscara protectora ante Sportivo Belgrano, reemplazando probablemente a Samuel Cáceres, quien llegó a la cinco amarillas. Por su parte, el goleador se mostró recuperado de la contractura en su pierna izquierda y volvería en lugar de Sebastián Penco.

Teniendo en cuenta que el partido ante el conjunto cordobés será el próximo lunes, a las 20.30, en el Libertadores de América, recién el jueves De Felippe comenzaría a dar indicios de una probable alineación titular.

Lejos de Banfield y de Defensa y Justicia, puntero y escolta del campeonato, respectivamente, Independiente quedó a dos unidades de Crucero del Norte e Instituto, ambos con 52 puntos. En este 2014, el Rojo sólo cosechó dos victorias en 13 encuentros disputados y restan 8 fechas para la definición.

Copa Libertadores Wrap: Lanus advance

Lanus eased into the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals as three home teams claimed 1-0 wins on Wednesday.

Argentine outfit Lanus took a 2-1 lead to Mexico and completed a 4-1 aggregate victory over Santos Laguna with a 2-0 second-leg win.

Ismael Blanco and Paolo Goltz were on the scoresheet either side of half-time, while the hosts had Andres Renteria sent off during the second half.

Lanus were always on track to progress after Blanco put them ahead on 28 minutes.

The experienced attacker was on hand to capitalise on a defensive blunder and scramble in the opener for the visitors.

Progression was sealed just six minutes after the break as Goltz stepped up to fire home a powerful penalty.

Santos Laguna attacker Renteria was shown a straight red card with 16 minutes remaining, ending any small hope the hosts had of a comeback win.

While Lanus advanced, three teams – Atletico Nacional, Nacional Asuncion and San Lorenzo – claimed first-leg wins in the round of 16.

Atletico Mineiro, the 2013 champions, conceded a late goal in a 1-0 loss at Colombia´s Atletico Nacional.

Sherman Cardenas struck a stunning 91st-minute winner for the hosts at the Estadio Atanasio Girardot.

The attacker cut inside from the right and his powerful 30-yard effort found the top corner of Victor´s net.

Julian Benitez put away a Fredy Bareiro cross at the back post and the goal was ruled to have crossed the line after goalkeeper Sebastian Sosa´s attempted clearance.

Riquelme participó de un ensayo formal

BUENOS AIRES -- Boca tiene un objetivo: sumar los 12 puntos restantes para mantener intactas las chances de luchar por el título y asegurarse un lugar en la próxima Copa Sudamericana.

Por eso, durante la mañana del jueves, las tareas en el entrenamiento desarrollado en Casa Amarilla se basó en un ensayo formal de fútbol, en el cual el equipo titular se impuso por 5 a 1, con los goles de Emmanuel Gigliotti y Juan Manuel Martínez en dos oportunidades y Juan Sánchez Miño.

Los once que Carlos Bianchi puso en cancha en el equipo titular fueron: Agustín Orion; Hernán Grana, Claudio Pérez, Juan Forlín, Nicolás Fernández; Cristian Erbes, Pablo Ledesma, Juan Sánchez Miño; Juan Román Riquelme; Juan Manuel Martínez, Emmanuel Gigliotti.

Los ausentes en dicho ensayo fueron Daniel Díaz, Emanuel Insúa y Federico Bravo, quienes trabajaron de manera diferenciada junto al Preparador Físico Juan Manuel Alfano. Igualmente, los tres llegarían en condiciones al partido del domingo.

En sus lugares, jugaron Claudio Pérez, Nicolás Fernández y Pablo Ledesma. Fernández es un lateral zurdo juvenil nacido en 1995 que aún no debutó en primera división.

En definitiva, de no mediar inconvenientes, serán tres las variantes que introducirá Carlos Bianchi el próximo domingo, con respecto a los once que superaron a Tigre. Ingresarán Sánchez Miño, Martínez y Gigliotti y saldrán del once Colazo, Luciano Acosta y Riaño.

Boca recibirá a Arsenal desde las 18:15 hs, con el arbitraje de Diego Ceballos. El "Xeneize" suma 20 puntos en el Torneo Final y, a falta de cuatro fechas para la finalización del campeonato, buscará descontarles puntos a los líderes, River y Gimnasia, que tiene 27 puntos.

Rosario Central: cambios en la delantera

BUENOS AIRES -- Tras asegurarse la permanencia en la máxima categoría, Rosario Central tiene como objetivo mantenerse con vida en la lucha por el título. Por eso, durante la mañana del jueves, Miguel Ángel Russo programó un ensayo de fútbol para probar el probable once para visitar a Vélez, el sábado.

Las dos grandes ausencias en la alineación titular estuvieron en el sector ofensivo ya que Franco Niell y Sebastián Abreu no pudieron entrenar junto al grupo y se ausentarán en Liniers. El exdelantero de Gimnasia presenta una contractura en el posterior, mientras que el uruguayo padece una tendinosis crónica en el cuádriceps de la rodilla izquierda.

Por eso, en sus lugares, volvieron a la alineación titular dos jugadores que en varios partidos del actual campeonato jugaron desde el inicio: Walter Acuña y Carlos Luna.

Además, la otra modificación estuvo en la defensa, ya que Lucas Lazo reemplazó al suspendido Rafael Delgado, quien llegó a la quinta amarilla. La novedad con dicho ingreso es que Paulo Ferrari cambió de lateral y se posicionó en el sector izquierdo.

En definitiva, los once que paró Russo y que jugarían ante Vélez son: Mauricio Caranta; Lucas Lazo, Tomás Berra, Alejandro Donatti, Paulo Ferrari; Hernán Encina, Nery Domínguez, Jesús Méndez, Federico Carrizo; Walter Acuña, Carlos Luna.

Rosario Central visitará a Vélez desde las 19:20 hs. del sábado y con el arbitraje de Juan Pablo Pompei. Cabe recordar que el "Canalla" se llevó los tres puntos en su última visita al José Amaltani en el Torneo Apertura 2009 (2-1 con goles de Gonzalo Castillejos y Emilio Zelaya).

Newell´s: Heinze volverá a la titularidad

BUENOS AIRES -- El final de la carrera de Gabriel Heinze se acerca y, por eso, trabajó en los últimos días con gran esfuerzo para llegar a lo que serán sus últimos cuatro partidos en Newell´s como futbolista profesional.

El defensor zurdo, desgarrado en el aductor derecho en el clásico con Rosario Central, se recuperó de su lesión y será titular en el partido que la "Lepra" disputará ante Tigre, en la tarde-noche del viernes.

Quién saldría del equipo es Guillermo Ortiz. Además, Enzo Beloso, recuperado de un esguince de tobillo, ingresará por Marcos Cacerés, ausente por una sobrecarga en el isquiotibial.

Mientras tanto, quedó descartado el regreso de Maximiliano Rodríguez, ya que aún muestra síntomas de una distensión y no se arriesgará teniendo en cuenta la cercanía de la Copa del Mundo.

De esta manera, los once para recibir a Tigre serían: Nahuel Guzmán; Enzo Beloso, Víctor López, Gabriel Heinze, Milton Casco; Éver Banega, Hernán Villalba u Horacio Orzán, Lucas Bernardi o Martín Tonso; Alexis Castro, Fabián Muñoz y Víctor Figueroa.

Las dos dudas en el mediocampo pasan por la incógnita sobre las sanciones de Villalba y Bernardi, expulsados en la fecha 14, ante Colón. En caso de recibir sólo una fecha de suspensión jugarán ante Tigre debido a que ya cumplieron una fecha al ausentarse ante San Lorenzo.

Newell´s recibirá a Tigre desde las 19:10 hs. del viernes con el arbitraje de Andrés Merlos. El equipo, ahora dirigido por Ricardo Lunari, buscará volver a ganar en Rosario, algo que no consigue desde el 16 de marzo, cuando venció 2 a 0 a Racing, por la fecha 8 del Torneo Final.

San Lorenzo: equipo suplente vs. Belgrano

BUENOS AIRES -- La Copa Libertadores es la obsesión de San Lorenzo en el primer semestre de 2014. Con el triunfo en el partido de ida de los octavos de final consumado, Edgardo Bauza definió visitar a Belgrano con un equipo completamente alternativo y preservar a los titulares para el partido de vuelta ante Gremio.

Romagnoli, suspendido en la Copa, no jugará por un golpe en la rodilla
Durante la mañana del jueves, aquellos que jugaron ante el conjunto brasilero hicieron tareas regenerativas, mientras que los que no tuvieron rodaje participaron de una práctica de fútbol en la cual el entrenador definió el equipo que jugará ante Belgrano.

El mismo tendrá a: Cristián Álvarez; Gonzalo Prósperi, Fabricio Fontanini, Walter Kanemann, Germán Voboril; Juan Ignacio Cavalaro, Enzo Kalinski, Facundo Quignon, Gabriel Esparza; Fernando Elizari, Emanuel Torres.

El gran ausente en dicho equipo es Leandro Romagnoli, quien no puede jugar en Copa Libertadores por una suspensión e iba a ser titular. Sucede que el experimentado enganche padece una molestia en la rodilla derecha y no será arriesgado.

Mientras tanto, tendrá su oportunidad Gabriel Esparza, mediocampista categoría 1993 que aún no debutó en primera. Además, jugarán Quignon y Emanuel Torres, quienes se presentaron y sumaron minutos ante Newell´s y Godoy Cruz, respectivamente.

San Lorenzo visitará a Belgrano desde las 15:00 hs. del sábado, con el arbitraje de Fernando Rapallini. El "Ciclón" no pudo ganar en sus últimos tres partidos del Torneo Final y suma 23 puntos, por lo que, a pesar de tener chances, Bauza deja en claro cuál es el objetivo del semestre.

It was confirmed on Thursday that Atlético Nacional defender and Colombian international Stefan Medina would be unavailable for José Pekerman in Brazil come June. Nacional team doctor Hernan Luna confirmed that the former Colombian U-20 international would be sidelined for "at least" two months.
Dr. Luna stated that Medina tore ligaments in his ankle and would have to undergo surgery to repair them. The procedure and rehabilitation process would have him out of action way past the June 2nd deadline for National Teams to have their final rosters read.

Medina suffered the injury in last week´s Liga Postobon match against Itagüí but the severity of the injury was not diagnosed until earlier this week. The option to undergo surgery was not made until yesterday and that procedure will be done on Friday.

In addition to the World Cup, Medina will also miss the final stage of the Colombian league tournament as the playoffs begin this coming weekend. Nacional will look to become the first to win three consecutive league titles since the implementation of the short tournaments when they beat Envigado FC at the Polideportivo Sur. 4

Medina could be ready for the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores, should Nacional get to that stage of the tournament. They currently find themselves with a slight advantage in their round of 16 tie against defending Copa Libertadores champs Atletico-MG. A goal by Sherman Cárdenas in injury time gave the Verdolaga a 1-0 win and will face O Galo at the Estadio Independencia in Belo Horizonte in two weeks.

The Return of Suazo and the Resurgence of Rayados

A question many fans of Monterrey have been asking themselves this week is how different could Rayados’ season have been if Chilean star Humberto "Chupete" Suazo had not picked up his should injury in mid-January.

Requiring immediate surgery, the injury was originally thought to threaten his participation in this summer’s World Cup, but the striker made a swift recovery and has been instrumental in Monterrey´s recent resurgence.

With three wins and two draws, his side have now picked up eleven points from the last fifteen available. Despite the recent fine form there is still a question of what might have been, with the aforementioned two draws against Santos and Chiapas only happening due to a late goal conceded in both games.

After losing four consecutive games and lying in last place in the table it is no coincidence that Suazo´s returned in the second match of the current five game streak (the first game coming against lowly Atlante).
His importance was underlined in his man of the match performance in last weekend’s 4-1 demolition of Veracruz. Suazo scored excellent goals and also grabbed himself an assist – adding a directness and menacing threat that Monterrey have lacked all season.

While is it certainly not healthy to be considered a one-man team, Monterrey are arguably more reliant on one individual than any other Liga MX side at present. Having made just three starts in 2014 Suazo is already the club’s joint third highest goal-scorer, just behind Cesar Delgado (14 games, 4 goals) and Lucas Silva de Oliveira (16 games, 3 goals).

The star striker’s value has certainly not been lost on his teammates. Defender Severo Meza is quoted as saying “Probably [the tournament] would be different if we had Suazo, he is a player that helps us a lot and he’s an important player in the group. He could have helped the team work better."

Now players and fans alike will hope he can help push them over the line and into the Liguilla. Monterrey close out their regular season with a difficult trip to Guadalajara to face Chivas in what is being billed as a Liguilla playoff. In truth, a win might not be enough for either side, with both teams reliant on results elsewhere going in their favor.

Speaking in advance of this weekend’s game, forward Omar Arellano accepts their fate is out of their own hands, saying “It doesn´t depend on us, but regardless of the other we want to close out season in the best way possible.” He too gave a nod to the return of Suazo, adding “The team has improved a lot, we now have an attacking strength that we lacked in the first part of the season. Our lack of goals has cost us this tournament.”

Queretaro Puts Season On the Line Against Pachuca

Queretaro and Pachuca arrive into the match with opportunities to clinch a spot in the Clausura 2014 playoffs known as the ´Liguilla´.

The match is set to take place Friday, April 25 at 8:30 PM Eastern Time. It can be seen in the United States on Azteca America and ESPN Deportes.

Both teams come into this match streaking. Queretaro is currently on a five game unbeaten streak, winning three of those games. Many of those wins and draws have come from goals by winter signings Camilo Sanvezzo and Ricardo Jesus.

The five-game average of 1.5 goals scored per match will not be enough to beat sides, like Pachuca´s that can score more freely, but they also only conceded 2 goals during the same period (0.4 goals per game on average). Their possession statistic (with a maximum possession of 41%) over those five matches suggests that Queretaro have done well by maintaining defensive organization and discipline, while hoping for a break on the counterattack. It is a philosophy that has seen the Gallos Blancos rise to tenth position in the Liga MX table, only out of a playoff spot because of goal difference (-3 after Week 16) to Atlas (Even), Pachuca (+1), and Morelia (+3).

Queretaro players received a bit of good news on Wednesday as, according to multiple reports, they are finally receiving some of the paychecks owed to them since the beginning of the year.

For Queretaro to complete their miracle run, even now with a little money in the players´ bank accounts, they would need to get the three points at home against Los Tuzos without conceding a goal. If they do not, they would have to hope for shock wins by last-place Puebla against Morelia, and by fifteenth place Tigres UANL against a resurgent Atlas, at a minimum, and many other permutations of results to go their way.

Queretaro need to display something magical at La Corregidora Friday night. But, given the good news, the Gallos Blancos may have a shot to do just that.

Los Tuzos come into La Corregidora on a four match winless streak that has frustrated captain Oscar ´El Conejo´ Perez.

When asked about the winless streak, ´El Conejo´ told El Sol de Hidalgo,"We are beaten, hurt by the results and we have a short week to find the result. We played to win or be set aside . So now we train and try to win. This is winning or be eliminated."

The team was clearly frustrated and the tone from Perez´s presser stated the urgency of getting three points in Queretaro. Few others have tried to take away the goal-scoring from Liga MX leading scorer Enner Valencia who has 12 goals, or prevented defenders from taking space away from Dieter Villalpando.

When asked if the team still believes in manager Enrique Meza´s methods, Rodolfo Pizarro added exclusively to Soccerly (via translation by Miguel Balderas of VAVEL Mexico), "We know about the capacity and experience of Enrique Meza and of course there is optimism in the group."

Pachuca´s goal-scoring record and the talent they field on the pitch, as well as their possession-based play, can give Pizarro and others that optimism.

Without additional leadership on the pitch besides Perez and Ayovi, Meza´s men have become lost and predictable. Tuzos could also have to fill in the void left by Colombian center back Efrain Cortes due to injury (confirmed during training tomorrow), and striker Enrique Esqueda, who Meza has relegated to playing with the U-20 side as punishment for a fight during training.

The question is whether Pachuca can put the previous on-field drama behind them, and solve a match against a very difficult to beat Queretaro side.

Gallos Blancos have stormed back into the playoff chase on the backs of good organization, support, and positioning in defense, and a counter-attack based offense. It is a perfect formula that would frustrate Pachuca.

If Pizarro and company really have retained the faith in what Pachuca are trying to do, perhaps their struggles might very well bring out something special. At the very least, it might bring the Tuzos back into the Liguilla.
