Uruguay Primera Division Wrap: Wanderers maintain pressure, Penarol stay top

Wanderers defeated eight-man Sud America 3-1 to keep up the pressure on Uruguay Primera Division leaders Penarol on Sunday.

After Sud America had moved ahead through Nicolas Royon, Emanuel Centurion became the first man to see red for the visitors shortly after the half-hour mark.

Subsitute Nicolas Albarracin had an instant impact as he found the net a minute after the break for Wanderers, before Sergio Blanco put the hosts in front 20 minutes later.

Sud America´s ill-discipline continued as they saw both Maximiliano Pereiro and Adrian Argacha given their marching orders for second bookable offences, and Albarracin affirmed his status as an inspired substitution by scoring Wanderers´ third four minutes from time.

Penarol remain a point clear of Wanderers at the summit following their 5-0 demolition of Nacional, who were hampered by the dismissal of Darwin Torres early in the second half.

Marcelo Zalayeta put the league leaders in front in the 12th minute, before Damian Macaluso headed home a second from a corner.

Jorge Marcelo made it three shortly after the break, before Luis Aguiar got in on the act with two goals of his own - the first a free header amid some questionable Nacional defending.

Fenix bounced back from a run of three games without a win to triumph 2-0 at Liverpool and move up to third.

Dropping a place to fourth are Danubio, who are now just a point clear of River Plate, the side they lost 2-1 to on Saturday.

At the other end of the league, Miramar Misiones pulled off an important 1-0 win at fellow strugglers Cerro Largo.

Defeat would have seen them cut nine points adrift at the bottom, but Matias Appelt´s 24th-minute effort secured a precious triumph.

Elsewhere, Juventud triumphed 3-2 in an entertaining encounter at Cerro, Racing pipped El Tanque Sisley to a 2-1 win, and Rentistas came from behind to hold Defensor Sporting to a 1-1 draw

Ramón Díaz: "Vamos a seguir peleando hasta el final del Torneo"

BAHIA BLANCA -- El entrenador de River Plate, Ramón Díaz, resaltó esta noche que tratarán de ganar los tres partidos que les quedan en el Torneo Final en procura de conseguir el título.

"Vamos a tratar de ganar los tres (partidos). Está abierto (el campeonato), ¿o no? ¿Gimnasia ya ganó los tres? Ahora se metió Lanús también", argumentó el director técnico de los Millonarios tras el empate 1-1 ante Olimpo en Bahía Blanca, resultado que dejó la cima en manos exclusivamente de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, a tres capítulos del cierre de la temporada.

Es que los dos puntos que dejó River en el Estadio Roberto Natalio Carminatti le pueden llegar a costar el campeonato, dado que ahora lo separan dos unidades del Lobo platense. Además, a los de Núñez en esta fecha los alcanzó Godoy Cruz y también podrá hacerlo Lanús si es que el miércoles el Granate se impone a Tigre en un cotejo que en su momento quedó postergado.

"Estamos contentos porque estamos peleando. Vamos a pelear hasta el final", insistió el riojano, en procura de ofrecerle su mejor mirada a la situación actual en la tabla de posiciones.

Carlos Bianchi aseguró que le "dio placer ver jugar a Boca"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Boca Juniors, Carlos Bianchi, afirmó que sintió placer al ver el rendimiento de su equipo en la victoria por 4-2 ante Arsenal, en La Bombonera.

"Me dio placer verlos jugar hoy, yo creo que una actuación como ésta ante un equipo tan difícil, con tanto oficio, a uno le da un signo de esperanza, que es lo más importante" valoró Bianchi en conferencia de prensa, luego del triunfo obtenido en el marco de la decimosexta fecha del Torneo Final.

"Pienso que fue uno de los mejores partidos. También lo fue ante Godoy Cruz, teniendo en cuenta en la situación en la que se encuentran al haberle ganado a Estudiantes", comparó el Virrey en referencia a la victoria de Boca ante el cuadro mendocino, también como local en el partido que se desarrolló por la fecha doce.

Esa alusión al éxito ante los cuyanos Bianchi la hizo porque este domingo el Tomba batió a Estudiantes 1-0 en La Plata y se colocó a dos unidades de la cima en esta competencia doméstica.

De nuevo acerca de lo ocurrido ante Arsenal, el conductor xeneize comentó que sus dirigidos generaron "tres o cuatro situaciones de gol" en el primer tiempo y que al no poder concretar le dieron "vida al adversario", aunque remarcó que al haber marcado el segundo gol sobre el final de la primera etapa, pudieron "salir a buscar ese tercero que nos dio la tranquilidad".

Si bien matemáticamente Boca aún tiene chances de alcanzar el título, al estar a siete unidades de la cima con nueve puntos por jugar, Bianchi reconoció que "no era el lugar que pretendíamos tener".

Y argumentó: "Hubo resultados muy cerrados que nos fueron desfavorables. No tuvimos la eficacia para definir los partidos a favor de uno. Con Colón en Santa Fe, con Rosario Central cuando íbamos ganándolo, el de Argentinos Juniors acá. Dejamos puntos en la ruta y lamentarse no sirve de nada".

Consultado sobre la continuidad de Juan Román Riquelme a partir de junio próximo, el adiestrador fue contundente: "Creo que hace un mes que están haciendo la misma pregunta, pero es una pregunta que yo no voy a responder. Es un tema que no toco y tengo mis razones para no tocarlos".

El director técnico de Boca consideró que el problema más acuciante por resolver de cara al futuro es el de la eficacia.

"Si hoy teníamos la eficacia lógica el partido se terminaba en el primer tiempo. Tendríamos que haber terminado tres o cuatro a cero. El día que ganemos en eficacia creo que vamos a ganar mucha tranquilidad en todas las líneas, ya que los defensores van a poder decir nos podemos equivocar porque arriba hacemos goles", subrayó.

Por otra parte, negó que haya brindado a los dirigentes una lista de refuerzos y otra de prescindibles, al advertirle a los periodistas: "Tengan mucho cuidado cuando hablan, porque yo no pedí ningún jugador ni saque a ninguno de los que están en el plantel".

Riquelme evitó hablar de su futuro y destacó la victoria ante Arsenal

BUENOS AIRES -- El emblema de Boca Juniors, Juan Román Riquelme, destacó esta noche la importancia de haber conseguido los tres puntos al imponerse a Arsenal 4-2, pero evitó referirse a su futuro en la institución.

"Ganamos, estamos contentos. Es importante sumar de a tres, ahora hay que descansar y pensar en el partido que viene", destacó Riquelme inmediatamente finalizado el partido en La Bombonera que culminó con la mejor producción de los dirigidos por Carlos Bianchi en este Torneo Final.

El enlace Xeneize fue ovacionado en reiteradas oportunidades por el público de Boca, teniendo en cuenta que su contrato vence en junio próximo y su continuidad está en duda. De hecho, Riquelme fue reemplazado a los 34 minutos del segundo tiempo por Luciano Acosta y de todos los sectores de la bombonera se escuchó un mensaje enfático: "Riquelme es de Boca y de Boca no se va".

Sobre su continuidad, el ex jugador del Barcelona y el Villareal esquivó el tema y sentenció que lo importante fue haber ganado consiguiendo cuatro goles y que esperarán obtener buenos resultados en los tres encuentros que restan, aunque el objetivo a mano parece consistir en consumar la clasificación para la Copa Sudamericana 2014.

UNA JORNADA ESPECIAL
En la victoria de esta tarde los hinchas vivieron una jornada especial, ya que ovacionaron permanentemente a Juan Román Riquelme y reconocieron al cuerpo técnico de Arsenal, compuesto por Martín Palermo, Roberto Abbondanzieri y Rolando Schiavi.

Riquelme fue colmado de atenciones, pero sobre todo a lo largo del segundo tiempo generó repetidos aplausos y ovaciones hasta ser reemplazado a los 34 minutos de la segunda etapa por Luciano Acosta.

El público entonó el tradicional "Riquelme Riquelme", además de corear "Riquelme no se va" y finalizar con el "ole le le ola la, Riquelme es de Boca, de Boca no se va".

También hubo ovaciones para Martín Palermo, Roberto Abbondanzieri y Rolando Schiavi, quienes integran el cuerpo técnico de Arsenal.

Palermo: "Me voy con bronca por el resultado, pero hay revancha"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Arsenal Martín Palermo aseguró hoy que se retiró de La Bombonera con "bronca" por el 4-2 en contra, aunque aclaró que en "tres días" tendrán revancha cuando se midan ante la Unión Española en Chile por los octavos de final de la Copa Libertadores de América.

"Me voy con la bronca lógica del resultado, pero a tres días tienen la revancha. Apuntaremos todo a la vuelta con el partido ante Unión Española", aseguró el director técnico del conjunto de Sarandí.

Y analizó: "Les dimos las facilidades. Nos golpearon en los momentos justos, marcaron al minuto de empezado el partido, pudimos empatarlo, pero nos marcaron en tiempo de descuento. Más tarde encontraron el tercer gol en menos de diez minutos del segundo tiempo".

El adiestrador reconoció que tras el tercer gol xeneize "Román (Riquelme) tuvo sus espacios, con (Nicolás) Colazo, con (Crisitan) Erbes y (Juan Manuel) Martínez. Si a Boca le das espacios, se complica".

Por otro lado, Palermo agradeció el recibimiento que tuvo por parte de los hinchas de Boca.

"Siempre el reconocimiento es mutuo. El hinchas es agradecido y nosotros también somos agradecidos por el lugar que ocupamos. Me tocó ser lo que soy es gracias a Boca", resaltó.

Además, el ex entrenador de Godoy Cruz prefirió no opinar sobre las continuidades de Carlos Bianchi y Juan Román Riquelme en el elenco xeneize.

Sobre su regreso a la institución de La Ribera, afirmó: "El tiempo dirá cuándo. Hoy nuestro presente es Arsenal y en Boca el técnico es Bianchi, con el lugar que tiene en la historia. El tiempo dirá cuándo volveremos".

Copa Libertadores Preview: Struggling Mineiro eye comeback win

Defending Copa Libertadores champions Atletico Mineiro must overturn a one-goal deficit if they are to reach the quarter-finals.

The Brazilian giants suffered a 1-0 loss at Atletico Nacional in the first leg of their round-of-16 tie, and they will welcome a return to their Estadio Governador Magalhaes Pinto home.

A three-match winless run in all competitions led to the sacking of coach Paulo Autuori, who was dismissed just hours after the loss in Colombia.

Levir Culpi signed a contract until the end of the year for his fourth stint at the club, but his latest spell started with a 2-1 loss at Gremio in Brazil´s Serie A.

Gimnasia lead the table but condemn Argentinos, Quilmes beat Racing to cling to Primera and Zárate stars in Vélez win

Gimnasia‘s incredible run of form continued yesterday afternoon in La Paternal but sadly their sixth consecutive victory sent Claudio Borghi’s, Argentinos Juniors side out of the Primera División. Perhaps the writing was on the wall some weeks ago but certainly Maxi Meza’s 35-yard scorcher after just 3 minutes didn’t help. Facundo Pereyra’s excellent individual goal, 5 minutes after the break ensured that Gimnasia would be clear at the top with just 3 rounds left and finally extinguished any hope for Argentinos.

While it may be too late for Argentinos, Quilmes continue to fight and the latest 1-0 victory over hapless, Racing in Avellaneda closed the gap to safety. A pretty dreadful match was decided 15 minutes from time when Gonzalo Ríos tapped in a rebound but Quilmes remain in the drop zone for now.

Unpredictably, Vélez Sarsfield turned in one of their best performances and thrashed Rosario Central in Liniers. Fielding the youngest side in the Torneo Final, coming off a 4-game losing streak and sandwiched between a crucial Libertadores tie against Nacional, expectation was low. However, it took less than a minute for Vélez to lead, Mauro Zárate spectacularly back among the goals with a perfect bicycle kick before adding a more simple finish after 22 minutes after Central had already seen Hernán Encina sent off. Leonardo Rolón blasted in an excellent third before Jairo Vélez tapped in the fourth. There was time for Antonio Medina to score an injury time consolation but Vélez must now focus on Tuesday’s Libertadores meeting with Nacional.

Colón missed the chance to close the gap on the leaders with a 1-1 draw against Atletico Rafaela. Rodrigo Depetris put Rafaela in front and although Gabriel Graciani equalised, Colón were left to rue, Jacobo Mansilla’s first half penalty miss.

Earlier, San Lorenzo were involved in another goalless draw as their Torneo Final peters out amid their Libertadores involvement. The latest, away to Belgrano, is the third in their last 4 matches but with a trip to Brazil to face Gremio on Wednesday, who cares?

Liga MX Week 17 Best XI: Regular season ends

It came as no surprise when everybody came out scoring. The 17th week of the Liga MX was the last opportunity for squads to make it into the Liguilla and goal differential was a deciding factor for some. Which is why, as mentioned, there were higher scores than usual. In fact, if Chivas had scored during their game against Monterrey, it would have been the first time this season that every team scored at least one goal during a Jornada weekend.

The following is what I considered to be the best eleven from the last weekend of the regular season of the Clausura.

Goalkeeper - William Yarbrough (Leon)
William Yarbrough has always been a key member of the Leon squad but truly showed his worth against Los Xolos. Tijuana had a total of 18 shots with seven on net against Yarbrough, Los Xolos´ 1-2 defeat against Club Leon. Yarbrough was able to block six and helped secure the eighth and final spot of the Liguilla for Leon. Cruz Azul will be a huge test for the goalkeeper and Leon will be relying on more spectacular performances between the posts from the 24 year-old.

Left Defender - Adrian Cortes (Veracruz)
Although Pumas’ Efrain Velarde was a close second for me, Adrian Cortes’ assist against Santos was the difference in a two goal draw against Veracruz. Cortes also did well defensively and provided plenty of coverage through his clearances and recoveries for the Tiburones Rojos’ last game of the season.

Central Defender - Hugo Ayala (Tigres)
Where was this Tigres squad during the rest of the season? Too little too late for the team from Monterrey, that beat Atlas, 2-1. Hugo Ayala had no trouble with the Atlas attack and provided the first goal for Tigres during the 37th minute of the match. It’s a shame he more than likely won’t be included in Miguel Herrera’s final roster for Brazil.

Central Defender - Francisco Javier Rodriguez (America)
I should be giving this to Puebla’s Mario de Luna because of the goal he scored, but Francisco Javier Rodriguez had a better performance overall as a central defender. Rodriguez also had the assist for Daniel Andres Rios’ goal that tied the game for America against Toluca.

Right Defender - Gerardo Flores (Cruz Azul)
Gerardo Flores was an active member of the Cruz Azul attack going forward and was also able to track back and hold the defensive line. Flores was all over the defense with his steals and clearances and helped transition the ball forward for Los Cementeros, in their 2-1 victory over Pumas.

Left Midfield - Luis Montes (Leon)
Leon needed to find a win last Friday in order to have a glimpse of hope for the Liguilla. They had the challenging task of playing in Tijuana, where Los Xolos had only one loss in the season. Montes, who was already having a good game, took a shot from around 20-25 yards away from the net and secured Leon’s win 2-1 with a spectacular goal. Montes has been dangerous with his long-range shots and I hope to see more of those this summer for Mexico.

Central Midfield - Juan Pablo Rodriguez (Santos)
Were it not for Juan Pablo Rodriguez’s two assists, Santos could have possibly lost their home-field advantage in the Liguilla and dropped down to fifth or even sixth place. Rodriguez was perfect with almost all of his passes on Saturday and created plenty of chances for Santos, in a two goal draw against Veracruz.

Central Midfield - Walter Ayovi (Pachuca)
Walter Ayovi and Pachuca were down 3-0 with only twenty minutes left in their match. Ayovi wasn’t at his best during the first half but swelled with confidence as the game progressed. Ayovi ended up taking control of the midfield and was the backbone of the Pachuca attack that scored four goals in the last 16 minutes of the game for an incredible comeback against Queretaro.

Right Midfield - Carlos Sanchez (Puebla)
It has to be Carlos Sanchez. Sanchez, with his goal and assist, surprised a Morelia squad who never seemed to take their last vital game seriously. Sanchez saw little of the ball but was very influential with his opportunities when they were given to him, as Puebla won 3-1.

Striker - Enrique Esqueda (Pachuca)
Six different strikers scored two goals this weekend. Ridiculous. Yet, to me, what makes Enrique Esqueda stand out is the fact that he scored twice with only a total of 22 minutes on the field, as Pachuca scored four goals in less than that span to beat Queretaro, 4-3.

Striker - Abraham Carreño (Pachuca)
Abraham Carreño was the spearhead of the last-minute Pachuca attack. Carreño assisted Pachuca’s first goal during the 74th minute, scored their second in the 79th minute, and then the game-winning fourth goal in the 90th minute. A stunning performance from the striker.
