Universidad de Chile Announces Own Stadium

SANTIAGO — The football club Universidad de Chile announced, the club is going to have their very own stadium in Pudahuel by the end of 2016. The construction works are supposed to start in about a year and should last 18 months.

This was explained by Carlos Heller, president of the “Azul Azul” club U de Chile on Friday, 25th of April. “Today is a historic day, a day-dream in the minds of the fans of the Universidad de Chile for many years,” said Heller in a press conference.

The stadium is going to be built on a 34 hectare area in the Eastern sector of the Metropolitan park Laguna Carén in the Pudahuel commune in the West of Santiago de Chile. The stadium will have the capacity to accommodate between 30 and 35 thousand people. Even though the name of the stadium is not defined yet, it is clear already that the construction is going to cost more than 50 million US Dollars.

Universidad de Chile’s investment also includes other projects such as reforestation of the Cerro Amapola to create a park for public use of 28 hectares with sports fields, running, cycling and trekking circuits.

Meanwhile, Universidad de Chile is also going to build a country club for the university community. This was the main announcement by Heller few days ago, when he became President of the sports club.

The rector of the House of Studies, which will lease the land to Blue-Blue, Víctor Peréz, said this “is a very important start to realize our university project in Laguna Carén. We’ve achieved a very good agreement with the leaders of the Universidad football club, which will be further refined to provide a sporting, social and recreational infrastructure.”

KSAFA outfit August Town relegated while Portmore United in dire straits

August Town have been relegated from the Red Stripe Premier League after succumbing 1-2 to Montego Bay United at the Wespow Park in St James.

Only this 2013/14 season, they gained promotion along with Rivoli United but are back down after a dismal campaign in which they won just five games from 31 matches while losing 14 times. In 2009/10 season, August Town won the Corporate Area Jackie Bell Knockout trophy and was relegated and had to wait three years for a return to top flight football. But that stay was not long and they will be playing parish football once again.

Rohan Williams had given them a 17th minute lead and it looked as though their survival hopes were alive but goals from Winston Wilkinson and Kemiro James in the 68th and 87th minutes respectively gave Montego Bay victory and broke the hearts of the August Town faithful. For Montego Bay United, it meant that they sealed their playoff spot and they moved into third spot with 51 points.

Meanwhile the unusual thought of former Premier League champion Portmore United being relegated took a step closer to reality after they crashed 1-2 to Rivoli United at the Bramwell Clark Sports Complex in Ewarton, St Catherine.

Portmore United the winners in 2012, are currently in 11th spot on 33 points following their latest defeat which is their 14th from 31 games and with only two games remaining, the St Catherine team is in real danger of being relegated.

Kemar Bennett gave Spanish Town-based team Rivoli United an 18th minute lead before National Under-20 midfielder Paul Wilson pulled Portmore levelled three minutes later. But the stage was set for none other than Devon Hodges to find the winner for Rivoli in the 84th minute from the penalty spot.

While the promoted Rivoli United climbed into fifth spot on 41 points, their St Catherine neighbours are left battling in the relegation zone and are favourites to join August Town in parish football next season.

Arnett Gardens secured the fourth and final semi-final playoff spot after playing out a 0-0 stalemate with Sporting Central Academy at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

Arnett Gardens inched to 49 points and slipped a spot to fourth but enough to push them into the playoffs while Sporting Central stayed in seventh spot on 38 points and although five points clear of the relegation zone, they are still not safe with two games remaining.

Humble Lion scored an impressive 3-0 win over Tivoli Gardens at Effortville Community Centre and moved away from relegation zone jumping two spots to eighth on 37 points while Tivoli Gardens playoff hopes were dashed and they slipped a spot to sixth on 39 points.

Omondo McLeod netted twice in the fourth and 74th minutes and was ably supported by Roberto Fletcher in the 78th minutes gave Humble Lion a well needed victory as they now sit four points above the relegation zone with two games remaining.

At Drewsland, leaders Waterhouse showed that they are title favourites with a comfortable 2-1 beating of champions Harbour View and moved seven points clear on 59 points. Harbour View remained second on 52 points.

Marvin Morgan opened the scoring in the 40th minute before Jevaunie Benjamin doubled the advantage in the 77th minute as Waterhouse won the psychological war as both teams prepare for the playoffs. John Ross-Edwards scored a consolation goal in the 90+2 minute.

On Monday night at the Stadium East field, another crucial relegation battle will be on hand when ninth placed Cavalier on 36 points host 10th-place Boys Town with 34 points.

Pachuca vs Pumas UNAM: The ´´Under the Radar´´ Battle

When the final whistle blew to end the Chivas-Monterrey match, Pachuca was set to be the sixth seed, set to take on third-seeded Pumas UNAM. The opening leg at the Estadio Hidalgo will begin a rematch of the Clausura 2009 Championship in which Pumas defeated Pachuca 3-2 over the two-legs of the final, and will take place on Thursday May 1, 9:00 PM ET on ESPN Deportes.

While the series has produced plenty of draws recently, Pachuca have dominated the fixture since 2004, going 6-4-2 against Pumas in regular season play. Both matches in 2013-14 have resulted in two of those draws. If this trend were to continue, there would be a chance that it would head to "higher seed advances territory," where Pumas would advance due to being the higher seed.

The match will pit the Clausura´s two front runners in the Golden Boot race against each other in Pachuca´s Enner Valencia (12 goals) and Pumas´s Martin Bravo (9 goals). Despite their goal-scoring output, both strikers´ have seen their scoring form dip and secondary scorers like Enrique Esqueda and Daniel Ramirez pick up the goal scoring load.

Pachuca come into the playoffs won only the one game against Queretaro in their last six, while the third-seeded Pumas come into the Liguilla winning just two out of their final six.

COMPLETE AND HEALTHY SQUAD FOR PACHUCA HEADING INTO PLAYOFFS

The Tuzos emphatically clinched their playoff berth, and a chance to win their sixth Liga MX trophy (and first since the 2007 Clausura) with a dramatic late match push that saw them score four goals in the last fifteen minutes of the match. Pending official word from FMF, Pachuca were spared an Esqueda ban for an obscene gesture he made to Queretaro fans celebrating one of those goals. But few could blame Pachuca´s players for emphatically celebrating a stunning comeback.

Manager Enrique Meza, for the first time in a few weeks, will have a fully healthy squad from which he can select. He confirmed to Record that defenders Efrain Cortes and Jorge Hernandez have a chance to return from injury, and that he was wary of more than just Martin Bravo. He added that the Tuzos´ back line must worry about Daniel Ludueña and Daniel Ramirez.

Meza also seemed excited by the prospects that his side will finally play Pumas in the cooler evening temperatures. The Toluca manager had previously complained about the referee not allowing both Pachuca and Pumas to re-hydrate during their Clausura match because of the sweltering heat.

Meza also noted that he never lost patience with his side despite being down 3-0 in the second half to Queretaro, and hoped that his side would retain that belief, and that rhythm that carried them to the Liguilla would be there to make an emphatic opening leg statement against Pumas.

PUMAS UNAM WILL HAVE TO DO WITHOUT BRAVO

Pumas UNAM, like their first round opponents, had a very up and down season. However, they managed to string enough positive results together, including the playoffs-clinching 1-0 victory against Chivas, to grab the third seed. Pumas hope to use their series with Pachuca to build a campaign that would secure them their eighth Liga MX crown, and first since 2011.

Pumas might not get the services of Martin Bravo and Dario Veron back from injury in time for the opening leg, according to manager Jose Luis Trejo. They will continue to miss Bravo´s speed, and finishing ability to get goals on a Pachuca defense that had become used to conceding wherever they were--including an average of 2.6 goals in each of its last five matches (and at least two goals in each of those matches). However there is good news on the injury front for the Mexico City giants, they´ll get attacking midfielder Daniel Ludueña and Paraguayan forward Dante Lopez back from injury, according to team doctor Jose Antonio Garcia.

One player that will certainly be motivated will be forward [Roberto] Daniel Martinez, who recently claimed to ESPN that [Pachuca director of player trials] Angel ´Coca´ Gonzalez tried to extort him and his family while Ramirez was playing in Pachcua´s youth system. While Ramirez has since clarified his remarks, the incident at Pachuca may provide extra motivation for his side to attack the Tuzos´ defense to build up a convincing away advantage.
