Copa America 2016 to be Held in USA

The 2016 Centenary of the Copa America will be played in the United States.

A Miami press conference held by the Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) revealed the long anticipated announcement today.

It began at 11.06 am Eastern time with opening remarks by CONMEBOL president Eugenio Figueredo Aguerre and CONCACAF President Jeffrey Webb.

The Copa America competition will be in its Centenary year in 2016 and will include all ten South American sides including the likes of Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina.

Additionally the United States, Mexico, and four other teams from the CONCACAF region (North and Central America and the Caribbean) are expected to participate. The other seven South American teams will be Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela. The US and Mexico will appear from CONCACAF.

The remaining four places in the sixteen team tournament are allocated to CONCACAF countries and will be decided over matches still to be played with at least one Caribbean team entering and Gold Cup performances mattering.

Aguerre spoke first about expanding CONMEBOL to join with CONCACAF and uniting the continent. A short video outlining the history of the tournament followed which revealed that the tournament is coming to the USA.

Webb spoke next and outlined the history of the tournament. He said it will be the biggest sports tournament since the 2002 Winter Olympics.

A journalists Q & A followed with questions about host cities and the calendar, none of which unveiled concrete answers.

A question was posed about this being the harbinger of a merger between the two federations. Aguerre did not deny it but waffled about the future and generations in an answer that the English interpreter struggled to make sense of but seemed to indicate that young people will make this happen after his time.

Webb revealed it had been the subject of his first meeting after being elected.

The Cup will run June 3 to June 26 and not compete with the Olympics according to Webb. Finally a group of players including Cobi Jones and Shaka Hislop were introduced.

Copa Libertadores: Atletico Mineiro 1 Atletico Nacional 1 (1-2 agg)

Champions Atletico Mineiro saw the title defence ended in dramatic fashion, as Atletico Nacional progressed in the Copa Libertadores.

Colombian outfit Atletico Nacional scored late in the second leg at the Estadio Raimundo Sampaio, to seal a 2-1 aggregate win and a 1-1 draw on the night in Belo Horizonte - sending them into the quarter-finals of the continental competition.

Jefferson Duque tapped home Edwin Cardona´s well-weighted cross in the 88th minute, although replays suggested the second-half substitute may have been in an offside position.

Regardless, Cardona´s cross - utilising the outside of his right boot - was brilliantly weighted, with Mineiro goalkeeper Victor drawn off his line as it crossed the goalface, leaving Duque to slide in and tap in the winner into the unguarded net.

Earlier, the Brazilian hosts had squared the tie when Fernandinho lashing home a brilliant goal to put Mineiro ahead on the night.

In a brilliant foray forward from Mineiro, Diego Tardelli was denied by the right post, and Nacional´s attempted clearance went only as far as Emerson Conceicao.

The left-back prodded the ball into the direction of Fernandinho, who got onto his right boot, before drilling his strike into the bottom right corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Atletico Nacional advance to the last eight, where they will meet Uruguayan outfit Defensor Sporting.

Cortes´ Late Goal Gives Pumas Away Advantage


Pachuca and Pumas UNAM came into the match looking to take advantage of the opening leg. Los Tuzos wanted to build an advantage in front of their fans, while Pumas looked to seize control of the series with a few decisive away goals.

Dario Carreño scored what many thought would be the only goal of the match in the 71st minute to give Pachuca a 1-0 lead against Pumas, who brought along a significant number of traveling fans. Carreño now has 3 of Pachuca´s last five goals, including a brace against Queretaro. However, a late equalizer in the third minute of added time by Javier Cortes forced the match into a 1-1 draw.

Pumas rarely looked threatening throughout the match, and looked like a side that missed Martin Bravo´s movement and finishing ability. Daniel Ludueña entering the match seemed to be the turning point of the proceedings. Cortes´ goal gives the Mexico city side the advantage on away goals, heading back to the capital.

Pachuca scored their goal in the 37th minute, when Carreño won his side a penalty kick. But Enner Valencia´s penalty would be saved by Miguel Palacios. That missed chance would turn out to be crucial in the match.

Both sides will head to the Estadio Olimpico Universitario to play the return leg on Sunday, May 4 at 6:00 PM Eastern time.

Darrio Carreno was the obvious choice for this award. The Pachuca forward´s movement, touch, and technical ability on the pitch was on full display this match. It drew the 37th minute penalty kick for Pachuca, and got Pachuca its goal. On a night when Pumas defended Enner Valencia well, and the Ecuadorian midfielder/striker was out of form, Carreno came through. It is unfortunate that Carreno´s goal would not give Pachuca in the series.

Missed Chances by Tijuana Result in Stalemate Against Toluca

Club Tijuana looked to continue its reign over Toluca in the first leg of the quarterfinals in the Clausura 2014 tournament, but despite a majority of possession and an overwhelming amount of offensive opportunities, Xolos´ inability to finish plays resulted in a 0-0 draw at Estadio Caliente.

Dario Benedetto set the tone with a perfectly flicked ball sent over the crossbar of Alfredo Talavera´s goal in the second minute of the match, which was followed by some back and forth before a loose ball was pursued by Richard Ruiz, whose attempt on goal went left and well off target just shy of 10 minutes in.

Five minutes later, Ruiz took a shot inside the box; Talavera stopped it but the ball fell loose by the goal line. Benedetto raced to tap it in but was unable to finish the clear chance.

In the 16th minute, Edgar Castillo took his first of several chances throughout the game at feeding Benedetto in the box, but once again, the Argentine´s shot went wide off target.

Cristian Pellerano was active in midfield and won a ball in the 24th minute, feeding Fidel Martinez, who experienced some versatility in a role where he played both wide and down the middle. His shot rolled inches left of Toluca´s goal in another clear opportunity.

Ruiz led a trio of plays over the course of 15 minutes, including a through ball to Martinez and a shot on goal of his own which was blocked by Talavera. Ruiz was another one active on the wings and up top; his service went tried but unfinished.

One of the best chances of the game came in the 70th minute, when Castillo was fed a ball from Pellerano, and shot from the left, feeding what could have been an easy ball had Martinez or Benedetto instinctively moved forward to tap it in.

Toluca´s opportunities on goal could have been counted on one hand, and even then, they were far short of anything Tijuana created over 90 minutes.

The final 20 minutes of the match saw three subs for Tijuana- one in midfield and two up top, including Herculez Gomez for Benedetto but despite the effort, Tijuana was unable to muster even one goal to take a lead into Estadio Nemesio Diez on Sunday.

The draw is favorable for Toluca, who are well aware of Tijuana´s vulnerability on the road. The second leg is set for 1:00pm EST on Sunday, May 4 on Univision.

Chivas´ La Volpe Crisis Could be the Final Straw in Vergara´s Tenure

After only been given the job on April 2nd, new manager Ricardo La Volpe survived less than a month before being unceremoniously dismissed by club owner Jorge Vergara. In a bizarre press conference on Wednesday La Volpe was accused of inappropriate conduct with a female member of staff, thus giving the club little choice but to remove him from his position. Very little further information was offered by Chivas.

Things got stranger - La Volpe conducted his own press conference on Thursday, with the Argentine using the opportunity to highlight some of the poor management techniques and borderline-illegal business conduct that occurs within the Guadalajara club. Needless to say, he also gave a scathing rebuttal to the accusations against him.

For fans of Chivas this is a worrying time. Just as the team were slowly starting to solve their on-field issues they have once again been hit by off-field problems that are entirely of their own making. Vergara’s twelve-year ownership has lurched from crisis to crisis. Although he delivered a new stadium, ill-fated endeavors such as Chivas USA combined with a non-stop conveyor belt of new managers has seen fans turn against him.

Chivas are now seriously threatened with relegation for the first time in their history - and Vergara is entirely to blame. Whoever replaces La Volpe will be the fifth manager since the middle of August 2013 - a phenomenal level of turnover that is certain to end in failure.

The whole La Volpe episode calls Vergara’s continued ownership into serious question. It has long been suspected that Chivas make some suspect business deals - but public accusations of breach of contract, falsifying a crime and compensation avoidance could make the situation unsustainable for Vergara.

If La Volpe is proved correct, Vergara could face strong repercussions from lawyers, the police, and most importantly - the fans. They have already used social media to accuse the owner of yet again bringing extreme embarrassment to the club, saying that under his stewardship the club is entirely dysfunctional and is urgent need of an overhaul from top to bottom. We even saw the rare occurrence of fans from other sides offer their sympathy to Chivas followers, with most expressing disgust and dismay at Vergara’s attitude.

It is apparent that today’s events are just the start of the drama. It appears we have not yet received the full story from either side, and as more facts emerge over the coming days the situation is likely become much worse before it gets better.

La Volpe said he regretted joining Chivas - but it could yet be Chivas and Vergara who end up regretting La Volpe. With relegation looming and fans furious, now could be the time that the self-made millionaire is finally forced to sell his stake in the historic team.
