Mauricio Pellegrino: "Teníamos que ganar y lo hicimos"

SANTA FE -- El entrenador de Estudiantes de La Plata, Mauricio Pellegrino, afirmó el sábado que su equipo "tenía la obligación" de derrotar a Colón, en Santa Fe, algo que hizo por 2 a 0, para seguir con chances de consagrarse campeón del torneo Final de fútbol, en un partido por la 17ma. fecha.

"Hay muchos equipos en la lucha, habrá que esperar hasta la última fecha para saber quien será el campeón", finalizó.

Almirón: "No lo supimos ganar"

MENDOZA -- El director técnico de Godoy Cruz, Jorge Almirón, reconoció este sábado tras la igualdad 1-1 ante Vélez Sarsfield que "si bien el punto es importante para seguir sumando, no supimos ganarlo y por eso quedó esa sensación de bronca".

El entrenador del Tomba sostuvo que "el resultado final deja mucha bronca. Tuvimos más claridad cuando estamos once contra once, creamos algunas situaciones de gol, pero no lo supimos definir".

Agregó al respecto que "en el segundo tiempo también tuvimos oportunidades para cerrar el partido, pero no las supimos aprovechar. Quizás ese compromiso que tiene el equipo de cerrar un partido, pero si no la podés meter, no te tienen que empatar. por ahí­ hace que nos equivoquemos".

En ese sentido, dijo Almirón que "llegó esa jugada de ellos, la aprovecharon y nos empataron el partido, pero da mucha bronca, porque era para ganarlo por como como se dio. Marcamos claras diferencias en el primer tiempo y en el segundo tuvimos más chances para convertir con un hombre de más".

"Al final terminamos jugando muy desordenados -agregó- para tratar de ganar como sea, tuvimos un par de chances más al final del partido, pero hay que seguir. Tampoco ganando nos asegurábamos nada, tenemos que esperar que hacen los rivales nuestros por el descenso".

El técnico del equipo mendocino señaló que "nosotros pudimos resolver el partido. Estábamos más cerca del segundo, que ellos de empatar, pero reitero que no supimos ganarlo".

Finalmente, Almirón explicó que "si uno lo ve en positivo, este punto lo podríamos haber sacado de visitante ante Estudiantes y hoy haber ganado de local, pero se dio al revés. La sensación es que ganamos un punto, que es importante, para sumar en el promedio, pero por como se dio el partido era para resolverlo a nuestro favor".

Walter Perazzo: "Todavía no estamos salvados"

ROSARIO -- El entrenador de Olimpo, Walter Perazzo, advirtió el sábado que deben evitar relajarse, porque "todavía los números" no garantizan la continuidad en la categoría, más allá de que están muy cerca de consumar el objetivo, puesto que precisan un punto más o dos.
"Todavía los números no nos dicen que estamos salvados, nos falta uno o dos puntos, depende de lo que hagan los rivales. Estamos bien, no tenemos que relajarnos y en este semestre el equipo ha demostrado una gran personalidad para estar cerca del objetivo que es mantener la categoría", precisó Perazzo.

Esa evaluación la hizo el director técnico de los bahienses tras el empate 0-0 ante Rosario Central, en el Gigante de Arroyito, por la antepenúltima fecha del Torneo Final.

"Esto fue una prueba de madurez y personalidad del equipo en una cancha difícil, porque la gente te empuja y por momentos los ayudó eso", remarcó Perazzo.

"Ellos tenían la obligación de ir a buscar el resultado. Atacaron mucho por los costados, especialmente en los últimos quiince minutos. Igual no tuvieron situaciones muy claras sobre nuestro arco", redondeó el conductor de los sureños.

Miguel Ángel Russo: "Nosotros no encontramos el nivel"

ROSARIO -- El entrenador de Rosario Central, Miguel Angel Russo, remarcó el sábado que si se falla en la definición "se hace difício ganar".

"Nosotros no encontramos el nivel y la regularidad para superar al rival. Fuimos más verticales e intensos, pero si no convertimos las situaciones se hace difícil ganar", admitió Russo en conferencia de prensa, tras el 0-0 ante Olimpo en el Gigante de Arroyito, por la antepenúltima fecha del Torneo Final.

Y siguió el director técnico con su comentario de lo ocurrido ante los bahienses: "Fue un partido trabado, difícil. El primer tiempo nos costó bastante, en el segundo tiempo nos serenamos y tuvimos las situaciones más claras, pero este tipo de partidos se abren con goles".

Para Russo, les costó el rol de anfitriones: "En el fútbol argentino todo cuesta mucho y más, de local. Siempre intentamos ganar, tenemos la iniciativa y cometemos errores. Igual ellos no nos llegaron salvo la que sacó (Tomás) Berra".

Con relación al futuro, Russo subrayó que pretende para la próxima temporada un rendimiento muy superior: "Lo importante es que seguimos sumando para el futuro, Central tiene siempre la obligación de superarse. Este año se logró la permanencia, pero para el año próximo hay que aspirar a más. Por eso hay que seguir trabajando y mejorando en todos los aspectos".

Santos Overturn Deficit at Home Against Club America to Reach Liga MX Semis

Santos Laguna advance to the Clausura 2014 semifinals after a 3-1 win at home over Club America which saw the aggregate score level to 6-6 following a first leg 5-3 loss. The away goal rule allows the Laguneros to advance to the final four over the Mexico City side.

After the two goal loss Santos knew they had to come out and attack from the opening whistle, and they did just that. The opening 45 minutes were completely dominated by the home side who looked for the goals needed to come fro behind.

Club America would end up paying a high price for Francisco Javier "Maza" Rodriguez´s red card at the end of the first leg. Taking over the suspended Rodriguez was Juan Carlos "Topo" Valenzuela, who couldn´t manage to finish the first half after a poor display. Valenzuela was replaced in the 34th minute but not before scoring an own goal that cut the America lead in half at the 27th minute mark.

The dominance that the home side enjoyed during the opening 45 minutes was not repeated in the second half. The visitors understood that sitting back would allow Santos the ease to come back into the game.

Argentine midfielder Rubens Sambueza was the one to take control of the game. His runs and passes allowed America to push forward looking for a cushion goal, but most importantly it did not allow Santos the opportunity to attack.

First half sub Luis Angel "Quick" Mendoza also had several dangerous runs up the right wing but missed on the final approaches on goal.

Santos kept looking for the goal that would push them to the semifinals with counterattacks. On a counter attack in the 82nd minute Santos won a corner kick; off of that corner kick, Ribair Rodriguez, would take advantage of the fact that goalkeeper Moises Muñoz dropped the ball after a close range header.

Minutes later Andres Renteria put the ball in the top corner of the goal to make it 3-0 and 6-5 in the aggregate score. The visitors found hope in a Rubens Sambueza goal in the 91st minute. The goal added late drama, but the Aguilas did not have enough time to mount another historic comeback.

League Leaders Cruz Azul dumped out of Playoffs By Leon

The curse of the Superlider (league leaders) struck again as Leon fought back from two goals behind to draw 2-2 with Cruz Azul in a rain-drenched Estadio Azul. The result saw the tie end 3-3 on aggregate and therefore meant Leon progressed to the semifinals on away goals.

Cruz Azul named an unchanged starting eleven from Wednesday night’s game, while Leon made one change with Matias Britos coming back into the side at Franco Arizala’s expense.

Pre-match both managers had spoken of their desire to play a free-flowing and attacking game, and when Mauro Formica sent a dipping volley just over the cross-bar inside the first minute it looked as though the tone had been set.

Cruz Azul continued to build on their bright start and grabbed the game’s opening goal after twelve minutes. Mariano Pavone was the scorer, reacting fastest after Yarbrough could only parry Formica’s shot straight into his path.

Corona made an excellent instinctive save from Boselli’s header, but Leon were struggling to deal with the surging intent of Cruz Azul’s attacks and it came as no surprise when the hosts doubled their lead. Joao Rojas showed good skill to beat his marker before picking out the increasingly impressive Formica, with the Argentine lashing home from twelve yards.

Leon, who had been pedestrian so far, gave themselves a glimmer of hope just before the break when Boselli turned in Edwin Hernandez’s low cross to make it 2-1. Just as Leon were celebrating the goal a torrential downpour started, and both sides seemed happy when the referee blew for half-time.

It was still raining hard when the sides re-emerged for the second half. Leon knew that one goal would send them through on the away goals rule, and they should have got that goal within two minutes of the restart when Luis Montes headed over from close range.

Not long after Montes’ miss Yarbrough produced a spectacular save to keep out Marco Fabian’s long range effort, and seconds later the importance of the save was emphasised when Montes redeemed himself by dancing through the Cruz Azul defence and slotting past Corona. The goal brought the game level at 2-2 and meant for the first time in the tie Leon held the advantage.

Cruz Azul knew If the score remained the same then the Superlider would be heading for an undignified early exit, and Tena immediately responded by throwing on the attacking-minded Christian Gimenez in place of Alejandro Castro.

The veteran’s introduction made little difference until the final five minutes, when a dramatic twenty seconds saw him crash a shot off the bar only for Marco Fabian to hit the post with the rebound.

The hosts threw everyone forward in the four added-on minutes, but unmarked second-half substitute Achille Emana missed their best chance when he volleyed over from eight yards. Moments later his anguish at the poor miss got the better of him, as he was shown a straight red for a unnecessary lunge on Montes.

Aside from the late flourish Cruz Azul never looked like getting the third goal they so desperately needed, though to their credit, Leon continued to play a reasonably expansive game until the final few minutes.

Cruz Azul fans will feel disappointed to be eliminated in the quarter-finals after being so dominant in the regular season. They beat Leon by thirteen points and their elimination on the away goals rule will undoubtedly once again call into question the FMF’s decision to scrap the former rule where the higher-ranked league side would progress in the event of a draw.

Ireland to Face Costa Rica at PPL Park

Relevent Sports and the Philadelphia Union today announced that the national teams of Ireland and Costa Rica will face off on June 6 at PPL Park in Chester, Pennsylvania at 8 p.m., ET.

Costa Rica is in Group D of the World Cup this summer and will open up against Uruguay in Fortaleza on June 14 before facing Italy in Recife on June 20. Four days later the Ticos will close out the first round against England in Belo Horizonte. Costa Rica is coached by the Colombian Jorge Pinto and led by Bryan Ruiz (PSV, Holland), Joel Campbell (Olympiacos, Greece) and Keylor Navas (Levante, Spain).

Ireland comes to the United States after missing out on the upcoming World Cup by finishing fourth in Group C in European qualifying. The Irish are now coached by former Aston Villa and Celtic manager Martin O’Neil and are led by LA Galaxy striker Robbie Keane as well as the Everton trio of Aiden McGeady, Seamus Coleman, and James McCarthy. Ireland will also face Portugal four days later at MetLIfe Stadium in New Jersey.
