Xolos Still Haunted By Road Woes as Toluca Advances in Liguilla

Toluca defeated Tijuana 3-1 at Nemesio Diez on Sunday afternoon, earning themselves a place in the semi finals of the Liguilla.

Historically, Tijuana have outplayed Toluca, and even beat them in both legs of the 2012 Apertura final, but this is a very different Xolos team from two years ago, and their road woes from the regular season came back to haunt them in the second leg.

After a 0-0 draw at Estadio Caliente, Xolos needed a win or a 1-1 draw, at the very least, to advance to the next stage. In a match with four goals between both teams, Tijuana was able to find the back of the net by way of Dario Benedetto, who found himself often playing a deep role to feed Fidel Martinez and Richard Ruiz on the wings. The result was only temporary as Toluca responded with two second half goals.

Toluca opened the scoring in the 31st minute when Antonio Rios blasted a right footed shot into the top right corner of the net off a Wilson Thiago ball.

Xolos then responded and brought the scoreline level in the 49th minute, when Benedetto headed a cross from Fernando Arce into the back of the net. Arce was forced into more of a defensive role in this match, but worked well to control the ball and get it forward for Benedetto to finish.

The away side continued to push forward in an attempt to get an insurance goal, even though a 1-1 result would see them through. Xolos piled on the pressure more in this game than in Tijuana, and even Edgar Castillo attacked more than usual. The speedy left back had a couple good attempts, but they were saved by Alfredo Talavera or went just wide of goal.

However, in the 60th minute Toluca left back Miguel Ponce sent a cross from Edgar Benitez into the bottom right corner past Cirilo Saucedo. The power from the shot was unstoppable for Saucedo, who managed to get a touch on the ball in a diving attempt to make the save.

Tijuana found themselves in a difficult situation after Hernan Pellerano was sent off in the 81st minute as a second yellow resulted in a subsequent red card for the defender. With Tijuana down to 10 men, Toluca looked to apply pressure on a now weakened Xolos´ back line.

Pablo Velazquez came on for Raul Nava in the 68th minute, which proved to be a smart sub just before the final whistle, The Paraguayan fed a through ball to Benitez for Toluca´s third goal in the 88th minute, which would be the final nail in the coffin for Tijuana.

Toluca advance to face current champion Leon in the semi finals. The winner of Pumas-Pachuca will face Santos Laguna in the other semi final match.

Pumas came into the return leg with the a slight "away goal-rule" advantage following the 1-1 draw in the first leg. A win or 0-0/1-1 draw would have advance the Mexico City side to the semifinals to face fourth seed Santos Laguna.

It was Pachuca who would advance to the semifinals, defeating Pumas 2-4 at the Estadio Olimpico Universitario (5-3 on aggregate). Pachuca will be the ones to take on fourth place Santos Laguna in the semifinals. The result also meant that no team from Mexico City or Guadalajara, and only one of the six most popular teams in Liga MX, would be represented in the semifinals.

Enner Valencia opened the scoring for Pachuca in the 11th minute on a shot in which he evaded Luis Fernando Quintana and fired past Miguel Alejandro Palacios. Pumas equalized a few minutes later on a long curling shot from Efrain Velarde. Enner Valencia would restore Pachuca´s lead in the 25th minute after a long 1v1 run from Hirving Lozano undressed Luis Fernando Quintana (and left Valencia unmarked). Pumas equalized in the 33rd minute on a goal by Pumas´ other outside back--Jose Carlos Van Rankin.

Enner Valencia completed his hat trick just two minutes from the start of the second half (47th minute) to give the Tuzos a 3-2 lead. Hugo Rodriguez added a corner kick goal in the 55th minute to seal the tie for Pachuca.

All was not rosy for Pachuca, as Enner Valencia had to be stretchered off of the pitch due to a potential injury. Valencia was seen clutching his face right when he was stretchered off.

The Clausura´s leading scorer returned to form in a big way, scoring a hat trick that sent the sixth-seeded Tuzos into the semifinals. The Ecuadorean benefited from Enrique Meza´s decision to move him up to the front line in a 4-3-3, rather than have him play behind Dario Carreno. The additional space gave Valencia more freedom to run at defenders and finish shots. It caused problems for Pumas defenders all match, especially Luis Fernando Quintana, whom he undressed on two of those goals.

The Pumas central defender was not prepared for Enner Valencia to be on the front line, but he was caught on three of Pachuca´s four goals. On the first goal, he allowed Valencia to beat him with no additional help coming. On the second goal, Quintana was beat by Hirving Lozano 1v1 to leave Valencia uncovered on the far post. On the third goal, Quintana kept Valencia onside. Once Quintana was subbed off after the fourth Pumas goal, the bleeding seemed to stop. But unfortunately, it was not enough to allow Pumas to come back in the tie.

En una final muy sufrida, Olimpia logró coronarse campeón de Honduras al derrotar en la tanda de penales 4-2 a Marathón, después que en los 90 minutos reglamentarios y tiempo extra, terminaron empatados 0-0.

El conjunto merengue sumó su título número 28 en el fútbol hondureño y para ello debió sudar mucho ante un aguerrido Marathón que le dio la batalla hasta en los lanzamientos de once pasos.

Donis Escober se convirtió en una de las principales figuras de este título albo al detenerle un penal a Mauricio Sabillón que significó el final de la tanda y que hizo enloquecer de la felicidad a los aficionados del Olimpia.
Después de un torneo sin estar en el trono, ya que Real España ganó el Torneo Apertura, Olimpia vuelve a reinar en Honduras, esta vez de la mano del argentino Héctor Vargas, quien ha logrado su primer título como entrenador.

LA TANDA DE LOS PENALES

El primero en abrir la ruta del campeonato en los penales fue el colombiano Omar Guerra, luego emparejó el uruguayo Luis Maldonado para Marathón. La segunda ronda la siguió Roger Rojas y no falló, pero sí lo hizo Sergio Bica.
Después le tocó el turno a Rommel Quioto y Oscar "El Pescado" Bonilla, ambos anotaron. Y el cuarto penal se vino el mal momento para los verdolagas.

David Meza ponía otro penal perfecto para los albos, sin embargo, llegó el momento para Mauricio Sabillón a quien Donis le adivinó el disparo y le daba la corona al equipo capitalino.

FUE UNA FINAL CON POCO ESPECTÁCULO

Antes de los penales, la final fue de poco espectáculo, sin tantas emociones, por muchos momentos aburrida y solo unos chispazos lograron levantar a los aficionados de las gradas.

Marathón no se llegó a encerrar, no especuló y buscó en todo momento llevarse la copa, pero no fueron certeros, como la jugada clarísima que falló Luis "El Bombero" Ramírez.

Al final Olimpia pone una copa más en sus vitrinas y junto a Real España nos representarán en la Liga de Campeones de Concacaf.

Venezuela Primera Division Wrap: Zamora edge closer to final

Zamora moved a step closer to the Venezuela Primera Division Serie Final as Mineros de Guayana kept the pressure on.

Noel Sanvicente´s Zamora outfit struck late to draw 2-2 at Caracas as their lead at the top was trimmed to two points.

Apertura champions Mineros de Guayana could claim the title if they win on the final matchday and Zamora fail to do so.

Otherwise, the two teams will meet in the Serie Final.

Jonathan Espana put Zamora ahead on nine minutes at Caracas, who drew level through Romulo Otero´s 35th-minute strike.

Rubert Quijada gave the hosts the lead early in the second half but Zamora secured a point thanks to Pierre Pluchino.

Pluchino capitalised on a defensive error to find the bottom corner in a one-on-one in the 89th minute.

Mineros de Guayana set up their 5-1 thrashing of Tucanes with three goals in the opening half-hour.

Brazil Serie A Wrap: Quartet win, move level at summit

Cruzeiro, Corinthians, Internacional and Goias all recorded wins over the weekend to move level at the top of Brazil´s Serie A table.

Defending champions Cruzeiro staged a second-half comeback to beat 10-man Atletico PR 3-2 and Corinthians left it late as they accounted for Chapecoense 1-0.

An impressive first-half display saw Internacional run out 2-1 winners at home to Sport Recife, while Goias edged Atletico Mineiro 1-0.

The unbeaten quartet are all level on seven points after three rounds of the campaign, though Corinthians (+3) occupy top spot due to their superior goal difference.

Marcelo de Oliveira Santos´ Cruzeiro went into Saturday´s clash on the back of a successful outing in the Copa Libertadores midweek.

But they found themselves trailing inside the opening 24 minutes after Ederson rose highest to guide his header into the far corner at the Estadio Nacional de Brasilia.

Nilton restored parity 12 minutes later having headed home from a corner, however, the home side regained the lead five minutes before the break courtesy of Marcelo.

Cruzeiro were handed a lifeline in the 47th minute when Atletico PR defender Drauzio received his marching orders, which triggered a collapse as Souza and Marcelo Moreno both scored in the space of eight minutes to lift the visitors to victory.

Uruguay Primera Division Wrap: Penarol, Wanderers both win

Penarol and Wanderers remain neck-and-neck in the Uruguay Primera Division after big wins over the weekend.

With two rounds remaining in the Primera Division, Penarol lead Wanderers by a point as they chase the Clausura title after they won 4-0 and 3-1 respectively on Saturday.

Penarol thrashed Juventud 4-0 thanks to braces from Jonathan Rodriguez and Carlos Nunez, with the latter scoring twice in two stoppage-time minutes.

Rodriguez put Jorge Fossati´s team in front in the 19th minute, thrashing a half-volley home, following a cut-back from Marcelo Zalayeta.

Just before half-time, Rodriguez tapped in at the back post after Luis Aguiar had chipped Juventud goalkeeper Leonardo Burian.

Juventud held out for most of the second half before a late flurry from Penarol.

In the 94th minute, Nunez, who had started on the bench, spun away from two visiting defenders and beat Burian in a one-on-one and the 21-year-old capped off a rapid double a minute later with a fine finish inside the box, weaving past his marker before placing a shot inside the right post.

Penarol´s Montevideo rivals Wanderers triumphed 3-1 over Racing, after going behind in just the second minute.

Antonio Gorocito gave Racing the lead but Wanderers were level four minutes later through Mauricio Gomez and took the lead five minutes after half-time when Maximiliano Olivera struck.

Rodrigo Pastorini capped off Wanderers´ victory in the 72nd minute.

In Uruguay, the league champion is decided in a two-legged play-off between the leading aggregate team and the winner of a one-off match between the Apertura and Clausura champions.

With two rounds remaining, Wanderers are top of the aggregate table with 55 points, a point ahead of River Plate, while Danubio, who won the Apertura, are third on 53.

If the tables remain the same, Danubio will face Penarol in a one-off match for the right to play Wanderers in the championship play-off.

Danubio lost to Rentistas 1-0 on Sunday in a blow to their hopes of finishing top of the aggregate table, which would have given them a distinct advantage in the championship race.

If a team wins either the Apertura or Clausura title and has the best overall record, they need to only win a one-off match against the winner of the other half of the campaign to be crowned champion.

By contrast, the remaining Apertura or Clausura winner need to win the one-off match and then a two-legged final to lift the championship trophy.

Fenix demolished Cerro Largo 5-1 to remain third in the Clausura on 24 points, while River Plate defeated El Tanque Sisley 1-0 to sit a point further back.
