Honduras Announces 23-Man Roster for Brazil World Cup

There was no real surprises for the Honduran National Team as they made their 23-man World Cup list official. After some long-winded speeches from federation members, as well as some dignitaries, Luis Fernando Suárez gave his list of players that will be wearing "La H" in Brazil.

The big surprise will be that of Rony Martínez, one of the 10-domestic based players called up by Colombian coach Luis Fernando Suárez. The Real Sociedad player was one of the leading goalscorers in the league this past season.

Another addition of note is that of Carlo Costly. He returns to the World Cup list after having missed out on the 2010 edition due to an Achilles tendon tear weeks before the tournament.

Unfortunately, Real Jaen player Jonathan Mejía was not selected for the squad. Many expected him to be on that list after his performance this past season with the Spanish side.

Honduras will now head to Ft. Lauderdale to begin their training camp and will end it with a friendly match against England on June 7th at Sun Life Stadium. After that they will head to Brazil, where they will debut against France at the Estadio Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre on June 15th. They will then take on Ecuador in Curitiba five days later and then finish off the group stage against Switzerland in Manaus on June 25th.

River: Balanta y Teo, a la par de grupo

BUENOS AIRES -- River venció a Racing y es uno de los punteros del Torneo Final. Sin embargo, en la mente de Ramón Díaz está rearmar el equipo ya pensando en el partido del próximo domingo ante Argentinos Juniors.

En el regreso al trabajo, durante la mañana del martes, las tareas del entrenamiento se basaron en ejercicios regenerativos y con pelota y la gran novedad fue que participaron Teófilo Gutiérrez y Éder Álvarez Balanta, ya recuperados de las lesiones que los mantuvieron al margen en los últimos dos partidos.

Otro que formó parte de los trabajos "normales" fue Gabriel Mercado quien mostró una gran evolución del esguince de rodilla que lo obligó a dejar el campo de juego en el partido con Racing.

Pensando en Argentinos, Ramón Díaz no podrá contar con Jonatan Maidana y Ariel Rojas. El defensor deberá cumplir una fecha de suspensión por haber sido expulsado, mientras que el volante llegó a la quinta tarjeta amarilla en la temporada.

Mientras tanto, la gran incógnita es qué pasará en el arco. Con Marcelo Barovero recuperado de un desgarro y a disposición de Ramón Díaz, la disyuntiva principal pasará por si le mantiene la titularidad al exarquero de Vélez o si aprovecha el gran rendimiento mostrado por el juvenil Leandro Chichizola.

River visitará a Argentinos Juniors, desde las 21:30 hs. del domingo. Un dato a tener en cuenta es que el "Millonario" sólo ganó una vez visitando a Argentinos Juniors desde la remodelación del Diego Armando Maradona, en 2003.

Arsenal: un cambio para jugar en Paraguay

BUENOS AIRES -- Dos de las sorpresas que tiene esta Copa Libertadores es el hecho de que una de las llaves de cuartos de final esté compuesta por Arsenal de Sarandí y Nacional de Paraguay, quienes se enfrentarán el miércoles en el partido de ida.

El conjunto dirigido por Martin Palermo visitará a la gran revelación de los octavos de final que eliminó nada más ni nada menos que a Vélez, quien había clasificado como mejor primero de la fase de grupos.

De cara a dicho partido, el entrenador realizará sólo una variante ya que ingresará al equipo Julián Cardozo, en lugar de Federico Freire.

De esta manera, los once titulares serán: Cristian Campestrini; Leandro González Pírez, Hugo Nervo, Diego Braghieri, Damián Pérez; Mauricio Sperduti, Matías Sánchez, Iván Marcone, Julián Cardozo; Julio Furch y Milton Caraglio.

Mientras tanto, completarán la delegación: Alejandro Limia, Gastón Esmerado, Franco Zuculini, Matías Sánchez, Nicolás Aguirre, Martín Rolle, Matías Zaldivia, Federico Freire y Emilio Zelaya.

Cabe recordar que está inhabilitado para jugar Matías Echeverría ya que debe cumplir la segunda de las dos fechas de suspensión que recibió por haber sido expulsado en el partido de ida ante Unión Española.

Arsenal visitará a Nacional de Paraguay en el estadio Defensores del Cacho a partir de las 19.45 hs del miércoles y con el arbitraje del colombiano Wilmar Roldán. El ganador de esta llave enfrentará en las semifinales, que se jugarán después del Mundial de Brasil, al vencedor de la serie entre Atlético Nacional de Medellín y Defensor Sporting de Uruguay.

Suspect Arrested for Killing Fan with Thrown Toilet Bowl

Two days after the Pernambuco Football Federation and the state police announced a financial reward for any information that could lead to the people who threw toilet bowls from the top of Arruda stadium, their pleas have resulted in one arrest.

A man named Éverton Felipe Santiago Santana, 23, also known as ´Ronaldinho´, was taken to a police station in Olinda, a city in the northeast part of Brazil. Santana is a service assistant at a private school and was found yesterday at work.

At first he said he had not committed the crime that killed Paulo Ricardo Gomes da Silva, 26, and injured other three fans. But later Santana confessed he took part in the action. His lawyer told Estadao that Santana was helped by other two men who have not been arrested yet.

In a report from Jornal Nacional, the anonymous caller talked about what motivated the call.

The body of Gomes da Silva was buried on Sunday with close to 500 people attending his funeral.

Yesterday the Attorney General of Sports Justice denounced Santa Cruz, owner of the Arruda venue, for the death of Gomes da Silva. The team can lose the right to play at its stadium for up to 10 games and receive a fine up to $44.5K

Daniel Villalva: "Falta mucho, tenemos que estar tranquilos"

BUENOS AIRES -- Ajeno al triunfalismo que viven muchos hinchas de River, el delantero Daniel Villalva afirmó el martes que "dos partidos es mucho" y pidió "estar tranquilos" de cara a la definición del torneo Final que lideran junto a Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata.

Villalva dijo que durante la semana va "a trabajar para tratar de estar" entre los once el domingo ante Argentinos Juniors, algo que no parece sencillo al estar recuperado Teófilo Gutiérrez, y agregó que "el que decide es el técnico".

"Si me toca jugar, trataré de aportar mi granito de arena", dijo el delantero de 21 años y 1,55 de altura en una conferencia de prensa que dio luego del entrenamiento en el predio de Ezeiza.

Feliz porque ya se afianzó como un suplente confiable, agradeció las muestras de afecto que le brindan los hinchas al comentar que "el cariño que me da la gente de River en este tiempo es algo muy lindo".

"Me siento muy contento. Cuando volví, quería tratar de ganarme un lugar y por suerte las cosas en lo personal me están saliendo bien", comentó Villalva, quien regresó a River para este torneo luego de su paso a préstamo por Argentinos, precisamente el rival del próximo domingo en La Paternal.

Ya pensando en la definición del torneo, en el que River alcanzó nuevamente en la punta a Gimnasia, advirtió que "dos partidos es mucho" y agregó: "Falta mucho, tenemos que estar tranquilos".

En ese sentido, advirtió que "Argentinos es un rival muy duro" pese a que ya perdió la categoría, aunque remarcó que si hacen "las cosas bien como en el resto del campeonato, nos va a ir bien".

Por otro lado, confesó que cuando Ariel Rojas cometió el penal en tiempo de descuento ante Racing se quiso "morir" y celebró que "después (Leandro) Chichizola lo pudo atajar y esa atajada sirvió para ganar".

Chichizola: "En River hay que responder domingo a domingo"

BUENOS AIRES -- El arquero Leandro Chichizola, héroe de River en la victoria sobre Racing, propuso dar vuelta la página al asegurar que "lo que pasó el fin de semana ya es historia" y, acaso confiado en que volverá a ser titular contra Argentinos Juniors, afirmó que en el club de Núñez "hay que responder domingo a domingo".

Chichizola confió que tiene una muy buena relación con Marcelo Barovero, quien está recuperado de un desgarro que lo dejó afuera de las últimas cuatro fechas pero el domingo iría al banco de suplentes, y contó que el ex-Vélez "está contento" por el penal que le tapó a Sebastián Saja en el tiempo de descuento del clásico que River le ganó 3-2 a Racing.

"Tenemos una relación muy especial (con Barovero), también con Nico Rodríguez y Augusto Batalla (los otros arqueros del plantel). Yo me puse contento cuando a él (por Barovero) le tocó salvar miles de partidos y el está contento conmigo. Somos un equipo", explicó Chichizola en diálogo con el canal de cable Todo Noticias.

Tras expresar que "es muy gratificante que sesenta mil personas coreen tu nombre", buscó salir del centro de la escena al indicar: "Muchos compañeros me han salvado a mi en otros partidos y ahora me tocó a mi. Pero lo que pasó el domingo ya es historia y en River hay que responder domingo a domingo".

Señaló que para un arquero suplente "lo primordial es tener paciencia" y subrayó que él está "aprovechando la oportunidad" que se le abrió por el desgarro del que Barovero ya se recuperó. Chichizola comentó que "algunos jugadores salieron con lágrimas en los ojos" a jugar el domingo contra Racing por el video que armó el cuerpo técnico con saludos y pedidos de que salgan campeones por parte de los familiares.

Santos Ready to Tame Enner Valencia and Pachuca in Semifinal Clash

An intense semi final awaits between two offensively strong teams.

Santos managed to escape the Liguilla quarterfinals with six goals over two legs against America, with a 5-3 loss in Mexico City giving them an away goal advantage heading into the second leg.

They were able to win 3-1 in Torreon with help from an own goal by Juan Carlos Valenzuela, and two goals in rapid succession by Ribair Rodriguez and Andres Renteria in the final 10 minutes. Rubens Sambueza was able to get one on the board for America in the 90th minute but it wasn´t enough.

Santos would play the winner of Pumas-Pachuca, where the first leg in Pachuca ended in a 1-1 draw. Pumas had the away goal advantage heading back to Mexico City, but keeping Ecuadorian international Enner Valencia at bay proved to be a daunting task if ever there was one -- the league´s leading goal scorer bagged a hat trick before Hugo Rodriguez sealed the deal with a goal in the 55th minute. Pachuca won that game 4-2 and advanced to host the first leg at home against Santos.

PACHUCA´S EXPLOSIVE ATTACK IS THE BIGGEST THREAT

TheTuzos finished the 2014 Clausura in sixth place, only a point behind Santos in fourth. While the Guerreros led the league in goals scored with 33, Valencia led the league individually in goals scored with 12, and now has three in the Liguilla from one game against a team whose defense is slightly better than the one Santos has fielded all tournament.

Aside from the threat Valencia poses, Walter Ayovi (another Ecuadorian), Jürgen Damm, and Enrique Esqueda are explosive and could cause some headaches for Jonathan Lasera and Oswaldo Alanis. Diego de Buen´s long distance shot is a killer, and Irving Lozano did a number on Santos´ defense in their regular season clash.

Jorge "Burrito" Hernandez plays similarly in center midfield to Santos´ Juan Pablo Rodriguez (also known affectionately as"Chato"). They both match up well in terms of style, space covered, and quickness.

The Tuzos´ defense is more effective than anything Santos has at the moment, but credit both Ayovi and Hernandez for being quick in ball recovery and building an attack from the back, helping to get the ball out of their own half quicker. There are areas of weakness where Santos could really take advantage, including Pachuca´s reliance on outside defenders while the mids attack. Darwin Quintero, Andres Renteria, and Oribe Peralta could easily slip through the middle on a counter attacking play and score on ´keeper Rodolfo Cota.

Overall, Tuzos are at less of a disadvantage because of Santos´ faulty back line, but they´ll still want to buff up the coverage in central defense if they don´t want to allow easy goals from one of Santos´ many goal scoring threats.

SANTOS´ OFFENSE SHOULD SCORE EARLY AND OFTEN, DEFENSE NEEDS TO BE TIGHT IN TORREON

Los Guerreros could be a favorite thanks to their offensive depth. They clearly have players who can score besides Peralta, Javier Orozco, and Quintero. Ribair Rodriguez and Renteria have been solid for Santos, feeding off plays from Quintero and getting into difficult spots. In midfield, Chato has matched Quintero´s work rate when it comes to setting up plays and feeding balls through. He does a graceful job at controlling the ball under pressure, connecting nicely with Rodriguez, Alonso Escoboza, and Rodolfo Salinas to get forward.

Santos will want to do everything it can to score early and often, which might be tough considering a majority of goals scored come later into its games. Head Coach Pedro Caixinha is known to sometimes sit back and wait to open up, which could work more to Santos´ disadvantage in this series with Tuzos´ attackers lurking.

Defense has been its biggest weakness all season long, and it´s the reason they´re second worst in the league in goals allowed. They´ve exhibited vulnerability in every spot in back which has led to easy goals and giveaways, even during clearance attempts - something they´ll want to be mindful of with this Pachuca team, especially in Torreon.
