Waterhouse, Arnett Gardens in pulsating semifinal 3-3 draw

Waterhouse and Arnett Gardens battled to a pulsating 3-3 draw in their Red Stripe Premier League semi-final first leg encounter at Drewsland.

The stage is set for an epic return leg on Monday at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.

Former Waterhouse striker Kirk Ramsey netted twice for Arnett Gardens in the fourth and 22nd minute. While Romario Campbell scored twice for Waterhouse in the 45 and 50th minutes.

Hughan Gray with a seventh minute penalty was on the scoresheet for Waterhouse while Renae Lloyd found the equaliser in the 73rd minute.

Fans were treated to an humdinger of a game which came a day after Harbour View and Montego Bay United thrilled spectators do a 2-2 draw in the first semifinal in Wednesday.

In front of decent sized crowd at the Waterhouse Mini-Stadium, the visitors Arnett Gardens drew first blood with Ramsey firing home in the fourth minute. But their celebrations didn´t last long as Hughan Gray pulled Waterhouse levelled from the penalty spot in the seventh minute.

Ramsey would restore Arnett´s advantage heading home in the 22nd minute before Romario Campbell once again pulled the host levelled. The former National Under 20 midfielder then gave Waterhouse their first lead in the 50th minute with what looked like the winner.

But the game was far from over and former Boys´ Town player Renae Lloyd equalised for Arnett Gardens in the 73rd minute.

So it´s all square heading into the return leg in Monday but by then, the first finalist would have been known by Sunday when Harbour View travel to St James to play Montego Bay United.

Kenny Dalglish had scouted the young star at Bordeaux, and requested the chairman Jack Walker to begin discussions with the player’s club. He refused, and famously said, “Why do you want to sign Zinedine Zidane when we have Tim Sherwood?”

Leon’s World Cup Quartet Aim for the Perfect Summer

Leon travel to one of Mexico’s most historic stadiums on Sunday afternoon for the Second Leg of the Liguilla Semifinal. Toluca and La Bombonera lie in wait, and with so much at stake it promises to be an enthralling encounter.

Six of Miguel Herrera’s World Cup squad will be on show – Marquez, Pena, Montes and Vazquez for Leon, Talavera and Brizuela for Toluca – with all except Talavera harbouring hopes of being in the starting eleven against Cameroon. For Leon’s World Cup quartet, winning a Clausura Championship would be the perfect tonic before they head off into the Brazilian wilderness in search of further glories.

Just two weeks ago few believed that Leon could still reach the Liguilla, yet after a Montes-inspired 1-0 win on Wednesday they are ninety minutes from the final; Leon have found their form at the right time. With the El Tri foursome so vital for both club and country, Leon are fast becoming the neutral’s candidate for victory.

The midfield trio have had a long twelve months – yet have performed admirably throughout two Liguillas, a Copa Libertadores campaign and a regular flow of international matches. Since the season kicked off last Autumn Montes has nine goals and eight assists in all competitions, while his teammate Pena has thirteen goals and six assists. Aided by Marquez and Vazquez, who between them organise the second-best defensive unit in the country, it is easy to see why Leon have been such a formidable opponent all year.

This season much has been made of certain sides’ vastly differing home and away records. Toluca themselves won six and drew two of their eight home games – but lost five on the road. Leon are the antithesis of such teams, taking eleven points from eight games at home and twelve from nine on their travels. It can be argued that such a record is commendable or naïve, depending on your perspective.

Matosas will be telling his players that all their records are in the past. Leon need to focus on the present by taking advantage of their good form and turning in another composed performance in the partisan environment of La Bombonera. If his side can control the midfield and dictate the game they will cause Toluca problems. The hosts have to score, and at some point that will leave space for Pena, Montes and Boselli to exploit.

When Marquez leads the team out on Sunday he knows he will be taking the first steps towards a defining stage of his career. This summer will mark his last World Cup, possibly his last appearances in a Mexico shirt – he and his Leon teammates have given themselves the opportunity to make it a perfect summer.

LOOK OUT FOR:

Carlos Pena: Debates around his place in Herrera’s eleven continue. Expect him to show the public what he’s capable of.

William Yarbrough: Often one of Leon’s unsung heroes, Yarbrough turned in a great performance to deny Toluca an away goal on Thursday night. Needs to be at his best on Sunday.

Luis Montes: Montes has scored in each of his last two outings, netting vital goals against both Cruz Azul and Toluca. His exploits have put Leon on the brink – can he continue his form and push them over the edge?
