Venezuela Primera Division Wrap: Zamora into final

Zamora clinched the Venezuela Primera Division´s Clausura title to book a spot in the league decider on Sunday.

Last season´s champions edged to a 3-2 win at home to Zulia, finishing two points clear of Apertura winners Mineros de Guayana – who they will face the final.

Juan Falcon scored a dramatic 90th-minute winner for Zamora, whose superior goal difference meant they only needed a draw.

But the hosts made a dreadful start on the final day of the regular season as Atahualpa Gonzalez gave Zulia the lead in the fourth minute.

Awful defending and two poor attempted clearances gave Gonzalez his chance to scramble in an unlikely opener.

By the seventh minute, Zamora were ahead as they responded superbly.

Luis Vargas and Ricardo Clarke struck in a two-minute period for Noel Sanvicente´s men.

Herlin Cuica tapped in a cutback for Zulia just four minutes before half-time to make it 2-2 at the break.

Falcon sent the home fans wild in the second minute of additional time at the Estadio Rafael Agustin Tovar with the winning goal.

Mineros, who could have claimed the outright title by finishing top, recorded a 1-0 win at Deportivo Lara thanks to Louis Pena´s 79th-minute goal.

Deportivo Tachira finished the campaign with seven straight wins after overcoming Aragua 2-1 at home.

Relegated Atletico El Vigia ended the season on a high after beating Carabobo 3-1 while Yaracuyanos, bottom of the aggregate table, suffered a 2-0 loss at home to Deportivo La Guaira.

Deportivo Anzoategui and Caracas played out a 0-0 draw, Atletico Venezuela edged Llaneros de Guanare 1-0 and Tucanes beat Trujillanos 1-0.

Deportivo Petare registered a 1-0 victory at home to Estudiantes de Merida.

Brazil Serie A Wrap: Internacional win to go clear at summit

Internacional opened a one-point buffer atop the Brazil Serie A table after edging Atletico PR in a hard-fought encounter.

Abel Braga´s Internacional came from behind to beat Atletico PR 2-1 at the Estadio Jose Pinheiro Borba on Saturday.

Internacional had trailed with 38 minutes remaining but Andres D´Alessandro and Alan Patrick scored in the space of 13 minutes to send the club clear at the summit.

The three-time champions sit ahead of Fluminense, who returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over strugglers Flamengo to occupy second spot.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes, Atletico PR broke the deadlock seven minutes into the second half, albeit with some help from Internacional.

An attempted interception from an Internacional defender fell to the feet of Marcos Guilherme, who made no mistake from close range.

Internacional quickly responded, however, with former Argentina international D´Alessandro carefully side-footing his shot from outside the area just two minutes later.

The home side completed their comeback in the 67th minute after Patrick, on loan from Ukrainian giants Shakhtar Donetsk, unleashed a powerful long-range shot past Atletico PR goalkeeper Weverton.

Internacional´s win moved them clear of Corinthians, Cruzeiro and Goias, who all slipped up over the weekend.

Corinthians, unbeaten thus far, remain third in the standings after drawing 1-1 at Sao Paulo, who were held to their third consecutive stalemate.

Defending champions and fifth-placed Cruzeiro lost 2-1 as Atletico Mineiro claimed their first win of the season against a team that finished with nine men.

As for eighth-placed Goias, they were beaten 2-0 by Palmeiras.

In other results over the weekend, Daniel netted a hat-trick as Botafogo routed Criciuma 6-0.

The 20-year-old Brazilian midfielder scored three goals in the space of 18 minutes in the second half to inspire the home team.

Bahia climbed up to fourth in the standings after playing out a 1-1 draw at home to Vitoria.

Uruguay Primera Division Wrap: Wanderers move clear as Penarol stumble

Wanderers moved a step closer to claiming the Uruguay Primera Division title after rivals Penarol slipped up over the weekend.

Alfredo Arias´ Wanderers came from behind to beat Defensor Sporting 2-1 in the penultimate round of Clausura action on Sunday.

Wanderers (31, +17) are now one point clear at the summit with one match remaining following Penarol´s (30, +17) 1-1 draw at lowly Liverpool.

The race for the title and a berth in the championship play-off, that pits the winners of the Apertura and Clausura, will certainly go down to the final round of games next week.

Wanderers are on the road against third-bottom El Tanque Sisley, while Penarol are at home to cellar-dwellers Cerro Largo.

Wanderers went into Sunday´s clash at the Estadio Luis Franzini on the back of five consecutive wins but that run threatened to end when Matias Jones opened the scoring for Defensor Sporting in the sixth minute.

That goal seemed to spur the visiting team in action, with Martin Diaz levelling proceedings just 11 minutes later.

Wanderers had to wait but they finally completed their comeback after Nicolas Albarracin found the back of the net seven minutes from time.

At the Estadio Centenario, Penarol failed to claim maximum points against 13th-placed Liverpool on Sunday.

Paulo Pezzolano put Liverpool ahead courtesy of a 13th-minute penalty, only for ex-Uruguay international Fabian Estoyanoff to restore parity with nine minutes remaining.

In other results over the weekend, Matias Abisab netted a second-half brace as Cerro upstaged third-placed Fenix 3-1.

With San Jose suffering their second straight loss, it meant Villegas´ side moved a point clear at the top of the table with three matches remaining.

Guimer Justiniano gave Guabira a shock lead away from home when he finished a neat team move in the 57th minute.

A quick free-kick set up the equaliser as Reinoso nodded in a cross from close range before he put The Strongest ahead with a neat finish at the near post.

Chile Primera Division: Palestino 2 Cobresal 1 (2-3 agg)

Cobresal will play in the 2014 Copa Sudamericana despite losing to Palestino in the second leg of the Chilean Clausura final on Sunday.

Palestino, who ended the match with nine men, were 2-1 winners over Cobresal in the return leg at the Estadio Municipal de La Cisterna.

However, Cobresal´s solitary goal in the second half was enough for Jose Cantillana´s men to triumph 3-2 on aggregate after Wednesday´s 2-0 win in the opening leg in front of their home fans.

Palestino always faced an uphill task after falling two goals behind at the end of the first leg and the odds were stacked against them even more when Argentinian midfielder Sergio Lopez saw red in the 36th minute.

Argentina Primera Division Wrap: River Plate move top as Gimnasia falter

River Plate moved into pole position to win Argentina´s Torneo Final with a 2-0 win over Argentinos Juniors, as Gimnasia La Plata lost.

Quilmes defeated Gimnasia 2-0 on Sunday to hand the former leaders their first defeat in seven games and both Estudiantes and River Plate took advantage to leapfrog the La Plata-based club.

Estudiantes, who are also from La Plata, had moved into first position in the standings when they cruised past San Lorenzo 3-0 on Saturday and held onto top spot after their arch-rivals lost, but River´s victory in Sunday´s late match saw the Buenos Aires-based giants edge ahead by two points with just one round to play in the second half of the Primera Division season.

Gabriel Mercado and Teofilo Gutierrez scored in the second half for River, as they rose to 34 points, ahead of Estudiantes (32) and Gimnasia (31), while Boca Juniors (29) trumped Lanus 3-1 to claim fourth in the table ahead of Godoy Cruz on goal difference.

The winner of the Torneo Final will play Torneo Inicial champions San Lorenzo in a one-off Super Final at a neutral venue.

At Argentinos Juniors´ Estadio Diego Armando Maradona, River had to wait until after the break to open the scoring with Mercado poking the ball home in the 69th minute after the hosts failed to clear a free-kick from their penalty area.

Gutierrez capped off the vital win for the visitors in the 78th minute, taking advantage of a turnover caused by Fernando Cavenaghi, and shooting between the goalkeeper´s legs to score.

In Quilmes, an own goal from Gimnasia´s Fernando Monetti five minutes into the second half and Lucas Perez Godoy´s stoppage-time strike saw the home side triumph.

River will wrap up the Torneo Final title with a win against Quilmes on the final day of the regular season next Sunday, while Estudiantes, Gimnasia, Boca and Godoy Cruz will need other results to go their way if they are to reel in the leaders.

Franco Jara was the hero for Estudiantes on Saturday, scoring a brace against San Lorenzo, who conceded twice in the opening 13 minutes.

Godoy Cruz lost 3-1 to Olimpo on Friday to leave them rank outsiders to claim the title.

Colon lost 2-0 at Velez Sarsfield as they strive to avoid relegation.

In the Primera Division, the bottom team across the Inicial and Final campaigns are relegated, as are the two clubs with the worst points average over the past three seasons.

Argentinos Juniors and All Boys have already been relegated this season and Colon, with a points-per-game average of 1.23, dropped into the third relegation spot on Saturday behind Atletico de Rafaela, who drew 1-1 with Tigre, but have the same average as Colon.

Colon host Olimpo on the final day of the Torneo Final campaign, while Atletico de Rafaela travel to Arsenal.

Caruso Lombardi: "Tenía una deuda con la gente de Quilmes"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Quilmes, Ricardo Caruso Lombardi, afirmó este domingo que "tenía una deuda con la gente" del conjunto cervecero, luego de asegurar la permanencia en Primera División tras vencer 2-0 a Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata.

"Es una alegría enorme, tenía una deuda con la gente de Quilmes y por suerte se nos dio", valoró Caruso, emocionado, apenas finalizó el encuentro en el Estadio Centenario, correspondiente a la penúltima fecha del Torneo Final.

Caruso Lombardi fue director técnico de Quilmes en 2011, pero en esa oportunidad recibió al equipo en una situación excesivamente comprometida y pese a la muy buena campaña que desarrolló en al recta final del torneo no logró dejarlo en Primera.

Además, sobre el desempeño de sus jugadores, que ganaron tres partidos de manera consecutiva, destacó: "El orgullo de este equipo es impagable".

Troglio: "Todavía no estamos muertos"

BUENOS AIRES -- El entrenador de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, Pedro Troglio, lamentó este domingo haber tenido "una mala noche" ante Quilmes aunque aseguró que su equipo aún tiene chances de pelear el título.

"Todavía no estamos muertos, llegamos con posibilidades a la última fecha", sostuvo Troglio, casi dándose ánimo tras admitir que fue "una mala noche" por haber jugado "un mal partido".

El técnico fue tomando temperatura con el correr de sus declaraciones mientras se escuchaban cargadas de hinchas que estaban en el sector por donde salían los futbolistas de Gimnasia.

Troglio abrigó del desamparo al arquero Fernando Monetti, por el error que cometió con su gol en contra al tiempo que agradeció al equipo la clasificación a la Sudamericano y mantener al club en primera.

"Yo no tengo nada que recriminarle a nadie, el fútbol tiene estas desgracias y justo a uno del os mejores jugadores del campeonato le toca pasar por esto", sostuvo respecto del arquero.

Luego, y mientras se escuchaban cargadas de hinchas que la dirigencia de Quilmes hizo poco y nada para que estén allí, Troglio salió a cuestionar a los medios y al juego de Quilmes.

"Se decía que este era el equipo de Cristina, de la chota... Que los mellizos nos iban a dar los puntos y nadie dice que San Lorenzo jugó con los suplentes cuando todavía tenia chances", se quejó el técnico.

Y como para que escuchen los locales dijo que Quilmes "se salvó hoy, no es el Bayern Munich. Hoy hizo el partido que le convenía, tuvo demasiado premio porque si jugamos así en el Bosque no íbamos a salir aplaudidos".
