Det bliver i øvrigt interessant at se hvad Gary Medel skal efter sommerferien.
Der vel ikke mange der forestiller sig at han skal spille i den næstbedste engelske række. Han skulle efter sigende have en klausul i sin kontrakt der gør at han kan få lov til at skifte i tilfælde af nedrykning og mon ikke der er rigeligt med klubber der kunne se værdien i at have ham på holdet.

Det er muligt at Demichelis har "rutine". Han har til gengæld været pænt ringe for Manchester City de gange de har været nødt til at bruge ham. Han er formentlig den spiller som Manchester City tilhængerne allerhelst ser ude af vagten.

Demichelis er med pga. hvad han tidligere har præsteret i trøjen, ikke fordi han er bedre end, eller for den sags skyld overhovedet i nærheden af samme niveau som mange af dem der er siet fra, eller slet ikke har været i betragtning.

Demichelis spiller vel objektivt set i en hårdere liga, på et bedre hold end end Rodriguez, Fazio og Musacchio (som jo iøvrigt var en joke i den sidste kamp mod Barca) - en liga hvor han (Demichelis) bliver udfordret kompetencemæssigt i hver kamp, mon ikke Sabella også har været i kontakt med Pellegrini omkring Demichelis´ niveau løbende ...det kan man sagtens forestille sig.

Sabella har vel ligesom alle andre trænere sine favoritspillere, som han stoler på og er loyal overfor. og Argentina har brug for noget rutine dernede i den bagerste kæde til at opveje de manglende spillemæssige kvaliteter.

Men det er typisk de sydamerikanske trænere.. "Jeg kender "Jose" fra min tid i Sporting Universitario, og der var han en god spiller for mig, så han skal med, for jeg kender ikke "Juan" så god

Åh jo - men det er jo ikke kun sydamerikanske trænere der gør det - det gør de europæiske trænere da også...DK´s Morten Olsen er jo af samme skuffe.

Pelligrini vinder EPL, Martino og Simeone ligger til at vinde La liga, Simeone med mulighed for at vinde hampions League, Pochettino har gjort det fint i Southampton , Gustavo Poyet i Sunderland, Pizzi rimeligt i Valencia , jeg syntes da de sydamerikanske træner i såfald har succes med den tilgang du fremhæver.

Sabella som Scolari går jo efter at stille det bedste hold, som ikke nødvendigvis består af de bedste spillere - at de begge derfor fravælger kendte spillere set med europæiske øjne til fordel for mindre kendte er der vel intet odiøst i. Der ved både du og jeg jo godt, det er yderst begrænset hvad europæere egentligt ved om sydamerikansk fodbold past and present

At Sabella ikke nødvendigvis giver Serie A (Gonzalo, det mest af Catania, Rncaglia, Iturbe, det halve af Milano, Tevez etc), La Liga (Fazio, Musacchio), Russiske Premier League (Ansaldi) et blåstempel ved at udtage disse spillere, handler vel også han er i tvivl om kvaliteten af både spillere og ligaer - Det at spille for middelgode hold i eksempelvis Italien og Spanien - er ikke nødvendigvis et kvalitets stempel for de store landshold i disse år.

Yeps, får han og Chile succes - hvilket de bør gøre, slå Holland og de har tidligere spillet lige op med Spanien. Problemet for Medel kan opstår/bestå i at SAmpaoli hiver ham ned midterforsvaret , hvilket han har gjort tidligere - der er han ikke vanvittig god - virker som et forsøg på at frigøre plads på mitbanen til Aranguiz, Diaz, Vidal etc...ganske sublim midtbane de holder sig.

Demichelis: "Estoy muy contento y sorprendido por la convocatoria"

BUENOS AIRES -- El defensor del Manchester City Martín Demichelis dijo el martes estar "contento y sorprendido" por la citación de Alejandro Sabella en la lista preliminar para el Mundial de Brasil 2014.

"Estoy muy contento y sorprendido por la convocatoria. Si bien uno siempre es optimista, de la Selección sentí que me estaba quedando afuera", aseguró el jugador por Radio América, tras haberse coronado campeón el último domingo con su equipo de la Premier League.

Y agregó: "Ayer ni se pensaba que podía estar hablando de una convocatoria. Fue un gran cierre justo con haber ganado la Premier".

Demichelis, quien participó con Argentina del Mundial de Sudáfrica 2010, elogió además al técnico chileno del Manchester City, el ingeniero Manuel Pellegrini.

"Pellegrini es uno de los más grandes técnicos que tuve en mi carrera. Tenemos visiones similares de compartir el fútbol. Decidí irme del Atlético Madrid por la confianza que me tenía el cuerpo técnico del City", comentó el ex jugador de River Plate.

Luego, Demichelis admitió que estuvo "muy cerca" de regresar al club de Núñez, pero informó que "hizo un análisis global de la situación" cuando apareció el Atlético Madrid y terminó yéndose al club Colchonero.

En la previa del Mundial de Alemania 2006, Demichelis se quedó fuera de lista de 23 jugadores, cuando estaba en un gran momento en el Bayern Munich.

"En el Mundial 2006 me quedé afuera cuando me veía adentro, hoy me pasó al revés", afirmó el defensor.

Por último, Demichelis resaltó su deseo de estar en la nómina final de 23 jugadores que viajará a Brasil.

"Trataré de sacar lo mejor de mi para quedar entre los 23", concluyó el futbolista del Manchester City.

Analyzing Uruguay´s World Cup Squad

Uruguay´s World Cup preliminary squad was leaked on Twitter on Monday night because, why not? This is the ¨gotcha¨ era of journalism and everyone has to get the ¨scoop¨, but hopefully respected players and established veterans who saw their dreams shattered and hearts broken like Sebastián Abreu got the call from Oscar Tabarez and didn´t have to find out via a RT by @TastyAlfajor2014.

Tabarez was praised by the Uruguayan press in general for gambling on continuity and including 18 players who were part of a 2010 World Cup that saw them finish with a historic 4th place for the first time since 1970, when none of the players on that roster had even been born, in his 28-man preliminary squad.

Of those 28, three of them (Alvaro Fernández, Andres Scotti and Gonzalo Castro) are reserves, and then only 23 of the 25 hopefuls that will be part of the Uruguayan training camp will get to be part of the final World Cup roster, which could be announced as late as June 2nd.

The “Charruas" will start things off against Costa Rica in the Estadio Castelao of Fortaleza on June 14. However, before that moment comes Tabarez will count on a friendly against Northern Ireland on May 30 to help him decide what his squad is going to look like once it faces Slovenia on June 4 and then lands on Belo Horizonte to let their World Cup dreams begin to be realized in earnest.

In the meantime, let’s take a position-by-position look at Uruguay’s preliminary roster, not counting the reserves.

GOALKEEPERS: FERNANDO MUSLERA, RODRIGO MUÑOZ, MARTÍN SILVA

There is no intrigue here, because these are the three goalies that already have their passports stamped for Brazil, barring injury or some kind of catastrophic event.

Of those three, Muslera is the undisputed starter with plenty of experience to share having been a part of the 2010 World Cup, 2011 Copa America and 2014 World Cup rosters. He is only 27 years old (turns 28 on June 16), meaning that he is just now entering his prime. That is a scary proposition for opposing forwards and a reassuring one for Uruguayans everywhere.

Besides, Muslera is riding a wave of momentum after playing for a Galatasaray squad that reached the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 this season and has been linked to a possible move to the Barclays Premier League in England after the World Cup is over.

DEFENSE: DIEGO LUGANO, DIEGO GODIN, JOSE MARIA GIMENEZ, MARTIN CACERES, MAXI PEREIRA, JORGE FUCILE, SEBASTIAN COATES.

This is one of the strongest defenses of the World Cup, at least on paper, and it will be led by Diego Lugano, Uruguay’s stalwart and guardian.

Lugano will be sporting the captain’s armband for the second straight World Cup, an honor that only Obdulio Varela and Horacio Troche previously had in 1950 and 1954 and 1962 and 1966 respectively.

Keep an eye on Jorge Fucile, who was vital during Uruguay’s run in the 2010 World Cup. The 29-year-old full back will want to redeem himself after having to watch the 3-2 loss to the Netherlands in the semifinals from the sidelines.

However, Fucile hasn’t played for Porto this year. The Portuguese squad stashed him on their “B “ team and then let him go after this season, something that has raised questions about his form before the World Cup.

Don’t expect any defenders to be taken off the list, even though Fucile and Coates, who is coming off a knee injury, could be the ones closest to be shown the door out of the seven in question.

MIDFIELDERS: AREVALO RIOS, WALTER GARGANO, DIEGO PEREZ, SEBASTIÁN EGUREN, ALVARO "TATA" GONZALEZ, ALEJANDRO SILVA, ALVARO PEREIRA, CRISTIAN RODRÍGUEZ, GASTON RAMIREZ, NICOLAS LODEIRO.

Uruguay doesn’t have an Andrea Pirlo or Frank Lampard to shed some light on the team when things get muddy and ugly, but it does have players that will leave their heart on the pitch like Gargano and Eguren to recover each and every ball.

Keep an eye on Ramírez, who plays for Southampton in the Premier League, is just 23 years old and will play in his first World Cup this year. This attacking midfielder could give defenders fits if they focus too much on Cavani and Suárez and give him room to roam.

Eguren, Álvaro Gonzalez and Silva could be the ones most at risk out of this group.

FORWARDS: EDINSON CAVANI, LUIS SUAREZ, DIEGO FORLAN, ABEL HERNANDEZ, CRISTIAN STUANI.

Not much needs to be said about Suarez, the Barclays Premier League’s top scorer with 31 in 33 matches this season, 10 more than his Liverpool teammate and second leading scorer Daniel Sturridge, who will be his rival in Brazil.

Cavani also had a stellar season at PSG with 16 goals in 30 matches, and then there is Forlán, who is not exactly in his best form nowadays but won the Golden Ball as the MVP of the 2010 World Cup.

Stuani could be the breakout player of this team, since the 27-year-old could prove useful as a weapon with his potent header.

Argentina´s 30-man World Cup Squad

Alejandro Sabella has announced the names of the 30 players that have been included in his preliminary World Cup Squad. As expected it is not exactly full of surprises and Sabella has proved that he will not be swayed by outside opinion. So there is no place for Carlos Tevez (obviously) and there is a place for former Wigan striker, Franco Di Santo (anyway he won’t be in the final 23 so calm down!).

Perhaps the mildest of surprises were the inclusions of Martín Demichelis, River Plate’s, Gabriel Mercado and midfielder, Fabián Rinaudo. Anyway, it is a preliminary squad and Sabella is most likely more than aware of his 23 so any surprise names here will not be in Brazil.

Argentina´s Preliminary Roster: Surprise, Surprise

It couldn’t be any other way, Argentina’s preliminary roster for the World Cup compensated in shock value for the delay and last-minute nature of the announcement by Argentinean manager Alejandro Sabella, who left some pretty heavy, world-class players off of the list composed by a total of 30 players, some of which are marginal and/or injured members off the “Nobody Saw ‘Em Coming” club. The roster is composed as follows (the club each player belongs to is in in parenthesis).

Goalkeepers: Sergio Romero (Monaco); Mariano Andújar (Catania); Agustín Orion (Boca Juniors).

Defense: Ezequiel Garay (Benfica) ; Federico Fernández (Napoli) ; Pablo Zabaleta (Manchester City) ; Marcos Rojo (Sporting Lisbon) ; José Basanta (Monterrey) ; Hugo Campagnaro (Inter Milan) ; Nicolás Otamendi (CA Mineiro) ; Lisandro López (Getafe) ; Gabriel Mercado (River Plate) ; Martín Demichelis (Manchester City).

It cannot be emphasized enough that this isn’t the final list of the 23 players that will travel to Brazil for the World Cup, that list can be given as late as June 2. Anyone can be called upon or left off the team until then. However, the fact remains that these are the players Sabella prefers and that there were names included that even hardcore fans, much less the casual ones, thought were even in consideration to play for the national team like Rinaudo, Demichelis and Mercado.

There also are four currently injured players on this list, with varying degrees of recovery time: Gago, Di María, Augusto Fernández and Banega.
Players like Messi, Agüero, Di María and Higuaín are shoo-ins, but as much as the stars sell tickets, it is the team as a whole that wins the World Cup, so let’s take a look at the most controversial names on the roster and compare them to who Sabella left out.

Agustín Orión (IN)/Willy Caballero (OUT): Orión is a very good goalie, but he had a so-so semester and is not better than Caballero, who is playing at a superlative level right now and was the sole person responsible for spoiling Atletico Madrid’s title hopes last Sunday night.

In fact, Caballero is arguably better than Romero, the starter, and Andujar, the backup, as well and many believe that the number 1 jersey should be rightfully his. However, barring injury, all Caballero will be able to do is watch the World Cup on TV. Orión, meanwhile, will be a solid locker room presence as the third goalie on the roster.
Orión’s chances of making Final 23: 100% 0

Martín Demichelis (IN): Demichelis hasn’t played for Argentina since 2011, when he cost his team a 1-1 tie against Bolivia at home and was then promptly ignored for almost three years.

However, a solid season and a championship with Manchester City revived his World Cup chances, making Sabella forget the fear Demichelis instilled in everyone whenever he played for Argentina. Keep in mind that Demichelis himself was pleasantly surprised by being on the list, that should tell you everything you need to know. Selective memory is a funny thing.
Demichelis’ chances of making Final 23: 50%

Fabian Rinaudo (IN)/Esteban Cambiasso (OUT): Let’s call this the “Gago/Banega” corollary, because Gago is the starting defensive midfielder alongside Mascherano and Banega is his backup, but they are both injured and had been playing at a less than convincing level before suffering said injuries.

That creates a need for an extra midfielder, but instead of counting on Cambiasso’s veteran presence and the possible controversy over who should start, Sabella opted for Rinaudo, a lower profile player that could be a “break in case of emergency” backup that could not play a single minute and still be happy.

To be fair, Cambiasso may be a better player and possess World Cup experience, but he didn’t play a single minute with Argentina since Sabella took over as coach in 2011, while Rinaudo played in the first two World Cup Qualifying matches against Chile and Venezuela in 2011 and in friendlies both in 2012 and 2013.

Rinaudo’s chances to go to the World Cup could increase if Augusto Fernández, Gago and/or Banega don’t fully recover from their injury or if Lucas Biglia, who was a slightly steadier presence through the years, somehow disappoints.
Rinaudo’s chances of making Final 23: 25%

Franco Di Santo (IN)/Carlos Tévez (OUT):

This is THE BIG ONE. Di Santo, a striker that scored all of four goals in 21 matches this season for Werder Bremen, took the spot of Carlos Tevéz, the Serie A champion with Juventus, third top scorer in the Italian League with 19 goals in 33 matches, and an Argentinean fan favorite, widely considered to be ¨The People´s Forward¨.

You can try to explain things away with all the conspiracy theories you want, or say that Sabella was just being considerate by not wasting Tévez´s time if he wasn´t going to be in the World Cup roster, but there is absolutely no point in deluding ourselves and thinking that Di Santo is even remotely close in terms of talent compared to the Apache.

Odds are that Di Santo will be unceremoniously cut come June 2, since the other five forwards are untouchable and odds are that Sabella has more pressing holes to fill and won´t want to carry a sixth forward, the roster equivalent of a third goalkeeper.
Di Santo´s chances of making Final 23: 5%

It is what it is. These are the 30 players that carry the hopes of 40 million Argentineans with them. The World Cup hasn´t even begun, but the controversy has already started and won´t end until the wins that may, or have to, come eventually silence the critics.

Three Reasons Why Club America Signed Oribe Peralta

Mexico City giants Club America are used to making high profile signings, and this Tuesday they did it again. Both Club America and Club Santos Laguna directors offered a joint press conference in which they announced that Mexican National Team forward Oribe Peralta would join America for the Apertura 2014 season of LIGA Bancomer MX.

Peralta, who is currently in Mexico City with the National Team also spoke via tele conference in which he said his goodbyes to his hometown team.

Both sets of club directors refused to give any details on the amount of money that it took for this transaction to happen, but it is rumored that America paid Santos between $5 - $10 million USD and that Peralta was signing a three to four year contract.

Here are the three reason why the 11 time Mexican league champions were willing to spend that kind of money:

1- ANOTHER TOP QUALITY STRIKER WAS NEEDED

Club America has yet to fill the huge void left by the late Christian "Chucho" Benitez. Youth product Raul Jimenez had formed a strong partnership with Benitez and when the Ecuadorian left for the Middle East, Jimenez stepped up and became the target man for America.

Luis Gabriel Rey and Andres Rios were also brought in to help Jimenez as well as youth product Antonio "Tony" Lopez.

A dark reality is that Lopez has not been able to show high enough quality to play in Club America´s first team; or first division, and Argentine Rios has had a difficult time adjusting to Mexican football and has not been effective at all. Only Luis Gabriel Rey and Raul Jimenez are performing to the required level at the moment.

2- RAUL JIMENEZ COULD BE ON HIS WAY TO EUROPE

Club America has four strikers and only two of them are putting in decent performances, and now the Mexico City side risk losing one of the two forwards on form.

Jimenez will be part of the Mexican National Team competing in Brazil during the FIFA World Cup, and with his young age he is a prime target for top European clubs. Rumors of a European transfer fly around Jimenez every transfer season since he won the Olympic Gold Medal with Mexico in 2012. A strong showing in Brazil could finally seal the deal for this young striker.

3- TO ´ONE UP´ BITTER RIVALS CHIVAS OF GUADALAJARA

Life long rivals of Club America, Chivas of Guadalajara will be in a particular situation that they have never been in before; fighting out the relegation race. In order to avoid an embarrassing drop into the second division of Mexican soccer, Chivas owner Jorge Vergara was looking into a list of 25 possible players to sign from which he said he would sign at least six new players.

No doubt that one of the first names on his list was the former Santos Laguna striker Oribe Peralta. The number one issue that Chivas had throughout the Clausura 2014 season was the inability to score goals despite the vast number of forwards; Omar Bravo, Aldo de Nigris, Rafael Marquez Lugo, Carlos Fierro.

Since Chivas have their infamous "Mexicans Only" policy, the options for a new striker are slim. Club America could have gone out into the transfer market and signed a high quality international striker, but instead they went and took away what looked like the only real Chivas option.

Alexis Sanchez: From Washing Cars to Leading Chile Into the World Cup

Barcelona´s Alexis Sanchez has come a long way from washing cars in his native Chile just to make enough money to feed himself.

At 25, Sanchez is preparing for his second World Cup in the prime of his career. It could have been so different. Money was tight in his home city of Tocopilla where he cleaned cars to earn money and the local mayor gave him his first pair of football boots.

"If it weren´t for football I would still be washing cars and pushing carts" he said in an interview with newspaper El Pais.

Italian side Udinese signed Sanchez as a teenager and his raw talent was on show in South Africa in 2010. An exciting Chile dazzled before being dumped out by defeats to eventual champions Spain and then Brazil in the last 16.

"At the World Cup I was liberated and matured about 80 percent," Sanchez told El Pais.

Following the World Cup, he went onto become Serie A´s Player of the Year in the 2010/11 season - no small feat as Udinese are not one of Italian football´s traditional powers. His performances attracted the attention of Barcelona who spent 26 million euros ($36 million) to make him the first Chilean to play for the Catalan giants.

The past three years have proved a struggle, though, as Sanchez has failed to live up to the hype that surrounded his transfer. He was widely mocked in the Spanish media after describing himself as being a "great player" in an interview last year.

This season has at least produced his best goal return, but even then he has often been a peripheral figure when it comes to the biggest games. However, with Chile he appears like a different player. The extra responsibility of not being surrounded by a host of superstars brings the best out of his abilities.

"To start with, I feel more liberated with Chile because it is a different way of playing," he explains. "The work is less demanding at Barca. In the national team I work three times as hard because the game goes back and forward all the time. Barca is unique, no other team in the world plays like that. There will not be another team in history that has so much talent and plays as well."

A meeting with many of his Barca teammates lies in wait for Sanchez as the World Cup draw set out a path for Jorge Sampaoli´s side as demanding as the one they faced four years ago. As well as being paired with both the reigning champions Spain and 2010 finalists the Netherlands in Group B, Chile could also face Brazil once more in the last 16.

Spain boss Vicente del Bosque insisted before and after the draw that Chile was the one side he did not want to face, following their impressive display in a 2-2 draw between the sides in a friendly last September. Yet, despite Chile´s rise in the FIFA rankings and profile around the world thanks to players like Sanchez and Juventus´ Arturo Vidal, the Barcelona man admitted that he would happily settle for second place in the group behind Spain.

"It is nice that Spain show respect towards us because they are the champions, but we have been put in the hardest group of all and I would sign for finishing second with Spain going through too."

Viola: "Racing tiene que salir a ganar"

BUENOS AIRES -- El juvenil delantero de Racing Club Valentin Viola hizo mención al partido del próximo domingo ante Godoy Cruz de Mendoza, equipo que aún no aseguró su permanencia en Primera, y al respecto afirmó que su equipo "tiene que salir a ganar" y que no le "interesa" si su rival "se juega el descenso".

"Racing tiene que salir a ganar por más que estemos salvados y no juguemos por la tabla de arriba ni la de abajo es Racing. Necesitamos tres puntos para lo que viene", declaró el atacante en conferencia de prensa tras la práctica matutina.

Al respecto de la potencial pérdida de la categoría por parte del Tomba, Viola fue tajante: "No nos interesa para nada si ellos se juegan el descenso. Vamos a salir a ganar".

Por otra parte, el futbolista surgido de la cantera académica, destacó el planteo táctico impuesto por Fabio Radaelli en el empate sin goles ante Rosario Central en la última jornada, el cual fue más ofensivo y claramente opuesto al esquema conservador que solía usar el entrenador saliente, Reinaldo Mostaza Merlo.

"(Fabio) Radaelli llegó y lo que él pidió fue que tratásemos de jugar y de intentar y además es cierto que teníamos menos presión con lo de la tabla de abajo y eso nos hizo liberar", analizó.

En la misma línea, añadió: "Puso jugadores de muy bien pie y con ganas de mostrarse que lo han hecho bien como Guillero Hauche o Roger (Martinez), a quienes no les pasó el entorno".

Por último, el jugador oriundo de la localidad bonaerense de Moreno, habló sobre el rumor que sostiene a Luis Zubeldía como uno de los pobrables técnicos para reemplazar a Mostaza Merlo.

"Hubo muchos técnicos que han tenido dos etapas en un mismo club. Me sorprende que sea con tan poco diferencia de tiempo porque echar a un técnico para volver a llamarlo un año después es un poco raro", sostuvo.

"Luis (Zubeldía) está a la altura de lo que es Racing y su juego y sus ganas de ir para adelante van con lo que es este club", cerró en su análisis.

LA PRÁCTICA
En cuanto a la práctica matutina del martes, desarrollada en la cancha auxiliar del estadio `Juan Domingo Perón`, el DT interino, Fabio Radaelli, sorprendió con una sesión de fútbol táctico en el segundo entrenamiento de la semana, situación que no ocurría en Racing hace tiempo.

En cuanto al trabajo, en el que el grupo estuvo dividido en dos equipos mezclados, el DT hizo hincapié en la salida desde el arco, la presión de volantes y delanteros en la zona ofensiva, la generación de juego y utilizar diferentes alternativas en ataque.

Para ello, Radaelli subdividió los límites de la zona media del campo, donde, en un primer momento, los jugadores debían tocar el balón en tres ocasiones para avanzar rumbo al arco contrario.

Luego, se mantuvo el mismo ejercicio, salvo que se quitó la regla de los tres toques y después, para finalizar la práctica, se jugó un fútbol táctico formal.

Por el lado de los lesionados, el volante Bruno Zuculini, quien se recupera de un esguince traumático en su tobillo derecho, realizó tareas de velocidad y coordinación con pelota, además de una sesión de kinesiología y gimnasio.

En tanto, el mediocampista Diego villar (traumatismo en su rodilla derecha) hizo trabajos en kinesiología y gimnasio, mientras que el delantero Luciano vietto (pequeño desgarro biceps femoral derecho) realizó kinesiología.

El plantel académico volverá a los entrenamientos el miércoles, desde las 9, en el estadio `Juan Domingo Perón, a puertas cerradas y sin atención a la prensa.
