Brazil Serie A Wrap: Cruzeiro close the gap

Defending champions Cruzeiro closed the gap atop the Brazil Serie A table after defeating Coritiba in a five-goal thriller.

Attacking midfielder Ricardo Goulart was the hero, bagging a double as Cruzeiro edged Coritiba 3-2 at the Estadio Governador Magalhaes Pinto on Saturday.

Cruzeiro have collected 10 points from five games, one point shy of unbeaten leaders Internacional, who played out a goalless draw with lowly Criciuma on Sunday.

Marcelo Oliveira´s Cruzeiro went into the match on the back of a three-game winless streak, having bowed out of the Copa Libertadores at the hands of San Lorenzo and lost to league rivals Atletico Mineiro last weekend.

But Cruzeiro got themselves on track for a morale-boosting win when Goulart opened the scoring in the 11th minute, rising highest to head home Egidio´s cross.

Coritiba were back on level terms within 12 minutes after Alex guided his header past goalkeeper Fabio.

Goulart was at it again, however, restoring Cruzeiro´s lead on the stroke of half time with a neat volley following a well-timed run into the penalty area.

The home side were pegged back yet again just 10 minutes after the break as Norberto Neto looped his header into the far right corner.

Cruzeiro hit the front for the third time through Borges in the 69th minute, which proved to be the match winner.

Meanwhile, Gremio and Goias both recorded wins to move level on points with Cruzeiro.

Rodriguinho´s 37th-minute goal was the difference as Gremio downed 10-man Fluminense 1-0, while second-half strikes from Ramon and Danilo lifted Goias to a 2-0 victory over Botafogo.

In other results, Corinthians´ first official game in their new stadium ended in disappointment as they slipped to a 1-0 defeat against struggling Figueirense on Sunday.

Giovanni Augusto grabbed the only goal three minutes after the restart - the visitors´ first strike of the season.

A brace from Ganso inspired unbeaten Sao Paulo to a 2-0 triumph at Flamengo.

Two goals in the final 15 minutes from Andre saw Atletico Mineiro come from behind to beat Santos 2-1.

Elsewhere, Palmeiras accounted for Vitoria 1-0, while Atletico PR and cellar-dwellers Chapecoense played out a 1-1 draw.

Paraguay Division Profesional Wrap: Capiata hold Libertad

Libertad were held to a scoreless draw by lowly Deportivo Capiata, to see their lead in Paraguay´s Division Profesional cut to nine points.

Pedro Sarabia´s side entered the fixture at their Estadio Dr Nicolas Leoz home having scored 35 goals in 14 matches this season, but were held goalless for the second time in the campaign as Capiata earned a valuable point.

Libertad are still well clear at the helm of Paraguay´s top flight on 36 points, with Guarani (27) their closest challenger.

Guarani beat Sportivo Luqueno 1-0 courtesy of Jorge Benitez´s 34th-minute goal, as they held onto second spot despite wins to Olimpia (third, 26) and Nacional Asuncion (fourth, 23).

Olimpia trounced Rubio Nu 3-0 at home, despite playing most of the second half with 10 men.

Neri Cardozo struck either side of Derlis Gonzalez´s goal, to cap a nine-minute bonanza in the first half from Olimpia.

Nacional Asuncion were 2-1 winners at home to Cerro Porteno, to move into the top four.

Sol de America fell to fifth, after being held to a 1-1 draw at home to cellar-dwellers 12 de Octubre.

General Diaz twice pegged back 3 de Febrero, but the latter emerged with a 3-2 road win for just their second success of the campaign.

Uruguay Primera Division Wrap: Wanderers eye Torneo history

Wanderers secured the Uruguay Primera Division Clausura title courtesy of a 1-0 win over El Tanque Sisley on Sunday.

Maximiliano Olivera grabbed the all-important goal in the 54th minute to send Wanderers to their first Torneo Final since 1985.

Wanderers have not been crowned Uruguayan champions since 1931 when the top flight remained an amateur competition.

However, a seven-game winning run has propelled them to the top and they will now face Apertura winners Danubio for the championship.

The duo´s presence in the showpiece means Uruguay will have a champion other than the giant pairing of Nacional and Penarol for the first time since 2008-09.

Penarol stumbled last week against Liverpool to hand Wanderers the initiative and the favour they needed to top the table did not arrive, despite doing their bit with a 3-1 win over Cerro Largo.

Defeat for Cerro Largo was their ninth in 10 games and leaves them at the bottom with just nine points to their name.

One place and one point above them finished Miramar Misiones - who drew 2-2 with Juventud.

Six defeats in the Clausura campaign wrecked Nacional´s hopes of the title, but they ended the season on a high with a 4-1 win at Fenix.

Danubio´s Joao Alves finished up the Clausura´s equal top corer with nine goals, but heroics came from elsewhere as his team-mates came from three goals down to draw 3-3 at home to Sud America.

Racing, River Plate and Cerro each rounded off their campaigns with wins over Rentistas, Defensor Sporting and Liverpool.

Argentina Primera Division Wrap: River Plate crowned champions

River Plate have been crowned champions of Argentina, winning the Torneo Final with a 5-0 thrashing of Quilmes on Sunday.

The country´s most successful club clinched their 36th title and first since 2008, finishing five points clear at the top.

It completes a remarkable turnaround for River, who were relegated for the first time in their history in 2011.

Fernando Cavenaghi scored a brace in their win over Quilmes, while Gabriel Mercado, Cristian Ledesma and Teofilo Gutierrez were also on the scoresheet.

Cavenaghi poked in the opener from close range after Quilmes goalkeeper Walter Benitez could only parry a shot.

Mercado nodded in a Jonathan Maidana corner in the 25th minute and the points were sealed just after the hour-mark.

It was in style, too, as Ledesma picked up a pass from Cavenaghi before a tremendous 30-yard effort gave Benitez no chance.

Cavenaghi was rewarded for his hard work in the 71st minute as Gutierrez played him through and he finished neatly from an angle.

Gutierrez was slipped in behind in the dying stages by Manuel Lanzini and he also finished to complete the rout.

Boca Juniors finished second on a five-match winning run as Luciano Acosta´s goal saw them to a 1-0 victory at Gimnasia La Plata.

Colon and Atletico Rafaela will feature in a relegation play-off match and they claimed 2-1 wins over Olimpo and Arsenal respectively.

Relegated All Boys drew 0-0 at home to Belgrano and Argentinos Juniors, who are also going down, lost 3-2 at Rosario Central.

Godoy Cruz were 2-1 winners at home to Racing Club, Tigre edged Estudiantes 2-1 and Newell´s Old Boys drew 1-1 at Lanus.

"A disfrutarlo.

San Jose crushed The Strongest 7-2 on Sunday to climb above their opponents in the Liga del Futbol Profesional Boliviano table.

https://www.youtube.com/…JZW74I76v8w

The Estadio Jesus Bermudez hosts got off to the ideal start, as Juan Zampiery´s run down the right side of the pitch resulted in his strike going in off the left upright after just one minute.

Adan Bravo doubled San Jose´s lead in Oruro with a stunning effort, curling a right-footed shot into the top corner from outside the area on 14 minutes.

The Strongest pulled one back six minutes prior to half-time, as Luis Melgar tucked away into an empty net after San Jose´s goalkeeper made a save off the crossbar.

However, Carlos Neumann reinstated San Jose´s two-goal buffer before the interval, heading home at the back post much to the home fans´ joy.

Neumann doubled his match tally and made it 4-1, when he tucked away a low shot after some brilliant team play in the build-up.

Roly Sejas dealt The Strongest more pain, as he finished a dazzling run from outside the area with a neat finish.

Alejandro Chumacero gave the visitors something to cheer about on 66 minutes, smashing home a left-footed strike, however, San Jose would not halt their rampage.

Bravo chipped his second of the game past the onrushing The Strongest goalkeeper, before Neumann wrapped up his hat-trick with a long-range header that dribbled through to round off the scoring.

Leaders Club Universitario have a three-point gap at the top, after their narrow 1-0 win at home to Real Potosi.
