Chile Lose Matias Fernandez for World Cup Due to Injury
Chilean midfielder Matias Fernandez found out that his ankle will be the reason why he will miss out on the World Cup just 24 days away from La Roja´s debut against Australia. After undergoing some physical tests it was discovered that he had partially torn ligaments in his right ankle and would require him to undergo surgery.
"It was difficult," said Fernández in the press conference he gave on Tuesday at Chile´s training ground at Juan Pinto Duran facilities. "I found out on Monday that I would have to go on surgery." This came as a shock to Fernandez because he was undergoing rehabilitation for his ankle. Fernandez did not expect surgery as an option for his recovery.
The former South American Player of the Year decided to remove himself from the call-up after he got the prognosis."I never thought that (the injury) was that serious," said the former Colo Colo and Sporting Lisbon man. "I am sad but it would be irresponsible for me to go to the World Cup knowing that I am not 100 percent".
After the news broke, his teammates offered their support on social media. One of the first players that did was Juventus star Arturo Vidal, who is also recovering from an injury, posting a tweet where he wrote that the team will be thinking of him throughout the World Cup.
For Jorge Sampaoli, the decisions become more difficult as he still needs to make three cuts to complete his 23-man roster for Brazil. There was also a chance that Sampaoli would call back one of the three players he released from camp this past weekend.
